Though violin was the first instrument I learned, the viola just might be my favorite to teach! Technique, confidence building and rhythm are my main focuses for viola students. In addition to performance skills, I aim to give all my students musical knowledge about theory, music history and musical terminology.

About Amanda
Hello, I'm excited you're thinking about music lessons! It is my passion to provide high-quality education to young learners. I obtained my B.M. in Violin Performance from West Chester University. I have been furthering my teaching skills as an active American String Teachers Association member, through Suzuki training, and pedagogy study at The Juilliard School during the Starling-Delay Symposium on Violin Studies. I also perform locally and love playing for opera and musical theater.

I work to help students create and achieve their musical goals. I pride myself on clearly communicating lesson topics and assignments so every student knows exactly what must be practiced for the upcoming lessons. Teacher clarity helps students practice in a more focused fashion so they can improve as steadily and quickly as possible. I ensure my student
s get the most out of each lesson by using a variety of teaching styles and tools. Students with longer lessons (45 minutes or more) can benefit from music theory workbooks and games which I incorporate into the lessons. My goal is to make every lesson fun and challenging for my students!

Hard-working students will prepare for auditions with local youth orchestras.

I offer multiple performance opportunities each year. In the past I organized formal spring recitals where all my students gained the experience of playing with an accompanist in a recital hall. Special opportunities include honors recitals and Duet Day performances. Of course, these opportunities change from year to year, but the emphasis is always on giving a performance to be proud of!

It is my pleasure to recommend Amanda as a violin instructor. On very short notice, she enthusiastically agreed to help my daughter prepare for a middle school orchestra audition, even though we were not on Amanda's roster of clients. In two 30 minute private lessons she was able to acclimate my daughter to the two challenging audition pieces, address questions about technique and also taught her how to tune her instrument. Thanks to Amanda's excellent teaching and flexibility, my daughter had a great experience for her first audition.

Many teachers who teach viola are primarily violinists, and are not as aware of the extra attention to detail and slightly different techniques that this instrument requires. Since I am primarily a violist, I can teach tone production, posture, and other techniques from the perspective of a player who has spent time learning the idiosyncrasies that make the difference between an excellent violist and a competent one.

My teaching style is inspired by my initial training in the Suzuki method, and my studies with violist and pedagogue Karen Ritscher at Oberlin Conservatory. Please note, I have not yet received training as a Suzuki teacher and use the Suzuki method books and the teaching I received as a Suzuki student as a jumping off point for working on each student's individual needs.

About Grace
I studied viola at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and moved to Portland three years ago to pursue performance and teaching opportunities. Since then I have performed with Classical Revolution PDX, Cascadia Composers and ARCO PDX and am a member of Macaulay Balkan.

My initial studies were on violin using the Suzuki method, which has greatly influenced my teaching approach. However, I am dedicated to customizing the lesson time and structure to the needs and priorities of my students.

*** Specialties ***
Very few "viola teachers" play viola as their primary instrument. As a full-time violist, I can help you learn how to play this idiosyncratic instrument from my own experience.

At the first lesson, Grace took the time to understand my musical goals then made a solid assessment of my current level of playing. She was able to identify small changes in my technique/form and crafted modifications in my warmup to support the change in technique.

I feel Grace is a great teacher for my eight year old daughter. This is my daughters first time playing an instrument. Grace is so patient and respectful to my daughter. Grace is teaching us a little at a time which I believe is a good pace for us. I have had to learn as well so I can assist my daughter in her practice at home. This part I didn't expect but Grace offers guidance. I feel through Graces lessons she not only is learning how to play the violin but learning self discipline and respect.

It was truly a pleasure meeting Concetta for my first ever violin lesson. It is difficult to learn anything at the age 40, specially a musical instrument, but she made it comfortable and easy to understand. She's extremely patient a key quality when teaching a subject such a music to anyone. I would say, give her teaching style a try and you won't regret it. Very knowledgeable indeed.

I’m an adult viola student which is kind of different for me. I started playing again after a couple years and I’m trying to learn ways to play with other musicians. Emily has been really good with helping me focus on what I want to learn. She is patient with me and also plays with me and makes me feel comfortable in my lesson. afterwards I feel good and positive and I want to play more! I suggest her for anyone trying to be creative and wants to improve on tempo, rythm, tone etc. she’s good.

In our first lesson, you will learn about the parts of your instrument, how to care for it, and how to hold it. You will even learn some notes and begin reading music! By the end of your first package of lessons, you will be able to play with lovely tone, using the bow as well as plucking, and will have a handful of simple songs under your belt.

Students describe me as patient, fun, and encouraging! As your teacher, you can expect me to work with you from where you are, and with subjects and curriculum that match what you are interested in learning. I teach traditional classical, using either Suzuki or Essential Elements, depending on your learning and self-motivational needs, and I also teach fiddle music, including Celtic, old-time, bluegrass, and alternative styles. *Please check my availability before signing up, as my time slots are quickly filling up!* I look forward to meeting you! Call Take Lessons today to sign up!

About Rachel
I have played and studied music for 30 years, performing internationally and appearing with groups on local and national radio and television, and have had the good fortune to share the stage and even record with some very talented individuals!

As for teaching, I've taught hundreds of students over almost 20 years, and over that time, I can say I've learned that what can make or break a student's success is whether or not they enjoy their teacher and the work they are doing.

I love helping my students learn to read and play, discover their own love of music, and conquer their fears of performing. I've been described by students as encouraging and fun, and my teaching style is warm, positive, and relaxed. I have worked with many students, including some with learning disabilities, physical limitations, PTSD, and just plain ol' stage
fright! I work with you to play the music you enjoy and set your own goals, and I look forward to helping you reach them... It's what I love about what I do.

I began my violin studies at age 9, with my public school string program. I continued through high school and into college, playing and singing with auditioned district ensembles, school musicals, and chamber choirs, coming in as runner up in my high school's concerto competition, landing a full-tuition scholarship, and performing twice in Carnegie Hall. I studied opera, vocal pedagogy, and passed my piano proficiency exam from the advanced class.

In 2003, I earned my violin performance degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and soon after, joined the Kansas City-based Celtic folk group, Tullamore. I have enjoyed 13 seasons with this lauded regional group, playing countless esteemed Celtic festivals across the country and embarking on five international tours of Ireland and Scotland, as well as a Caribbean cruise hosted for our fans. Our sixth international tour is scheduled for 2019 in Scotland.

In 2014, I relocated to Hampton, Virginia, where I auditioned for the Hampton Roads Philharmonic, and currently play as a first violinist.

From 2015-2018, I had the joy of fiddling and singing with Brackish Water Jamboree, an award-winning Americana band, featured on NPR's Blue Plate Special and Out of the Box series with Paul Shugrue, and host of the NorFOLK Festival.

Throughout this time, I have enjoyed teaching a full and enriching music studio of students: hosting recitals, open mics, and ensemble rehearsals, and watching students achieve goals they didn't know were even possible. I continue to teach online via Skype, Zoom, and TakeLessons Classroom, and I look forward to working with you to accomplish your own musical aspirations!

I usually work with children or teenagers and I can teach someone who has never played an instrument before as well as intermediate players. I use a variety of books that teach theory, rhythm and playing songs such as the Suzuki method, I Can Read Music, the String Builder series and Winning Rhythms by Edward Ayola. For the pieces I focus on a routine to prepare and perform "performance ready" pieces so students gain confidence in their playing and know the level of expectation for what a professional polished piece sounds like.
For complete beginners I focus a lot on the correct positioning because that is the base for playing and it is very hard further down the line to change a bad habit related to positioning.
For more advanced players I focus on the core skills such as intonation and the ability to read notes and rhythms but I also incorporate how to add musicality and flare to a piece so that it is emotional and interesting to listen to.

About Jocelyn
I am a computer science student and musician at Bryn Mawr College. I have been playing music for 12 years and teaching for 4. At college, I am principal viola of the Bryn Mawr-Haverford Orchestra and I also am part of a chamber music group. In high school, I was in the Maryland All-State Orchestra for four years and was in the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestra (MCYO), one of the most prestigious orchestras in Maryland, for four years. During my summers, I attended the Interlochen Center for the Arts high school music program. I have been taught by musicians from the National Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic.
My students improve significantly since when I first meet them. One of my first students whom I now give Skype lessons to successfully got into one of the best orchestras in the DC area and is now principal (1st chair) of
the viola section of that orchestra. I use a comprehensive set of books that teach theory, rhythm and pieces that I use to teach students how to prepare and perform "performance ready" pieces.

As a violist with a Master’s degree in Performance from the prestigious Colburn Conservatory, an experienced teacher mentored by respected Suzuki expert Shelley Bears Schleigh and chosen for a Teaching Fellowship with renowned Robert Duke, and an individual with an insatiable passion for psychology and development at all stages, Rachyl offers the complete package of polished performer, trained teacher, and passionate mentor. She has a particular interest in the development of young children, and, having moved to New York in 2017 from the San Diego Symphony to teach at the Brooklyn Music School, Rachyl is living her dream as a teacher. Her main goal for 2018-19 is to further this dream by expanding her studio. You/your child will receive consistent, dedicated care, individually tailored attention according to needs, abilities, and learning styles, and the inspiration to feed the brain and the soul with musical knowledge.

About Rachyl
Teaching is my passion, and the reason I moved to New York. From a young age I have always been deeply invested in the subjects of Development and Nurturing. I consider it my calling in life to pursue these subjects through teaching. My goal is always first and foremost to form a true connection with each individual student, observing their learning patterns carefully and trying different approaches until the student is thriving. My approach is continually positive, reinforcing excellent habits and achievements, and striving to find tiny goals that make a student feel he or she is constantly succeeding. My students find that their trajectory is continually upwards. You or your child would receive regular performance opportunities, regular specific feedback, consistent attention and high-quality musical training.

I am professional violist
, and a violin and viola instructor from the Philadelphia area. I graduated with my Master of Music in Performance with a Teaching Fellowship from the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles, a selective school which accepts only 125 students total on full scholarship including room and board. I also spent one year in the San Diego Symphony. I have performed in eight states as well as in Canada and Austria. I now teach lessons at the Brooklyn Music School and for such agencies as Thumbtack, Musika, and Music To Your Home. Last year I taught music at the Brooklyn Heights Montessori School. My primary background is in the Suzuki Method; I have taken the official introductory course this past year, and plan to become officially certified this year. I have taught all levels, learning styles, and ages, I have background working with students who need special consideration, such as those on the autism spectrum or with attention disorders.

I began learning the viola when I was five years old, so I understand the need to find fun and passion when playing. That doesn't mean you won't be challenged each week, but we'll make sure you learn more yourself as a student and a violist along the way. I approach each student differently based on their learning style.

About Troy
I have always loved music from an early age. I began playing viola at five years old playing with the Washington DC Youth Orchestra. I continued his career being classically trained in not just viola, but piano as well. Along the way I picked up guitar, drums, and more! I then studied under violist Katherine Murdock at the University of Maryland. I've performed at the White House, the Kennedy Center, and the Spanish Embassy. I now live in Los Angeles recording and producing my own music as well as artists nationally and internationally. My favorite thing about music is the creation of new sounds from a blank slate. My favorite thing about teaching music is making music fun. When taking lessons with me you can expect to have fun but also deeply learn the craft while discovering your own passions along the way. I look forward to getting to
know you as a student and learning about your specific goals, interests, and learning style. Book a lesson now!
