In my lessons I strive to make the maximum progress possible, while also having as much fun as possible. This is accomplished by imparting the most valuable, useful, and beneficial information in a fun and relaxed, low pressure environment, always with the students goals and priorities first and foremost. I also like to keep the student challenged at their current ability level.

For beginning students I stress basic fundamentals, just as you would in sports. It makes progress come at a much faster clip and avoids making time consuming corrections later. The longer you play with bad habits, the harder they are to break.

For more advanced students, I assess their current abilities, determine if any problems need to be addressed, and with their goals in mind, come up with the proper plan of action.

Having been self taught till entering college I understand all ends of the spectrum. In my career I have come across three separate groups of musicians:

1) Those who have good ...

My son has been taking lessons with Ed since he was 5. Ed was very patient dealing with a high energy child who had a limited attention span. Eight years later, we are still seeing Ed weekly for lessons and my son has turned into a well-rounded musician. Ed tailors the lessons to my son's musical interests and takes an interest in what is going on in his life.

We have gone to see Ed perform in several venues and he always takes the time to talk to us during his break. I highly recommend Drum Lessons with Ed for those at any skill level.

I studied with Abel for 3 years as an adult student and had a great experience. He’s a very dedicated drummer and teacher, is patient and smart, and is also a cool guy to hang out with. He became a great mentor, and I wouldn’t be the drummer I am today without him!

"Emerson is an amazing instructor. Besides being a very knowledgeable and gifted musician, he’s patient, kind, and makes learning the drums fun. What I appreciate most about Emerson is that he’s interested in helping me reach my goals. I happen to be interested in learning Latin style drums and lucky for me, Latin is one (of many) of Emerson’s specialties. So many people have told me that Latin is hard to learn, but in four short lessons, I already know how to play a basic Bossa Nova beat. Emerson is a very organized and efficient instructor. We work with handouts, video (I record him as he instructs) and reading exercises from a book. A highlight for me in our sessions is when Emerson accompanies my drum playing with another instrument, the piano for example. I really get the feeling like we’re having a little jam session and it's fun because I can hear that I'm making music and that's an awesome feeling.

Choose Emerson as your music instructor and you will not be disappointed."

"This is the guy!

Well, where to start....As a drummer, he is "virtuoso". I've been a drummer for quite a few year and found out about Keith through a friend. I was looking for a drum instructor/coach/colleague who I could use as a way to tune up, wait for it..............I found so much more in Keith. We spent a session analyzing my technique and Keith was quick to analyze and develop a plan to take me to the next, and next, and next level. As I'm the drummer in a substantial group "DC Stimulus",I often looked forward to meeting with Keith as someone who has been through the trials and tribulations before and was able to offer great advise Like gold this guy is!
Back to the basics. Because of Keith, I (re)discovered the sooooooo important point building a drummers metaphorical castle on a sound foundation. If you're looking for someone to start with on you drummers journey or an experienced drummer who is looking for a coach who is vastly qualified to critique (therefore improve) your technique, Keith is your guy. Keith, I love you man!! I look forward to drumming with you again!!!!!!!!!"

There hasn't been a time when I left the lesson without learning something new or improving on my previous skills. Mike is an excellent teacher and is very familiar with many different genres and styles of music. I always look forward to going to my lessons because every week there's something new and challenging waiting for me. I would highly recommend Mike as a percussion teacher to anyone, as he is incredibly nice and talented at the same time!"

3 Hand-Eye Coordination Exercises for Drummers

Whether you're a beginner or an intermediate drummer, good hand-eye coordination will help you develop accuracy and control. Here are some tips from music teacher Tracy D., to help you improve your hand-eye coordination... When you're learning drums, you need to watch and sense where your hands are in relation to the kit. It's easy to let your hands outrun your field of vision, and this can result in sloppy execution. Pay attention to your hands; make sure they land in the right place, …
