I went into banjo lessons not knowing if I could master the instrument or not, being nearly 70 years old. While by no means a master (and never going to be), I have learned so much from Sam and he has shown such patience with me. I often leave my lessons wondering how he ever puts up with me - but he does. His encourgement, laid-back style, expertise and knowledge of music (plus theory) and the banjo is impressive. His good nature makes my lessons so much more pleasant. I would say Sam is a a great teacher for both a beginner or an accomplished musician or in between. He likes to talk and demonstrate (nice and slowly if requested) so I would recommend hour-long lessons at first.

My first guitar lesson was great. I had started learning a few things on my own from books & videos. I quickly realized that there was no structure & I was developing bad habits. That all changed with Ross' instruction. He knows his stuff but most importantly he is a good teacher. Not the nightmares you had in school! Ross has qualities that you don't find with many people today. He made me feel comfortable and more confident. Now to pat myself on the back, I made a wise decision.

There are many ways to cultivate your musical skill whether it's visual, kinesthetic, or auditory. Let's find out which way works best for you!

Most schools do not offer the flexibility in learning styles necessary for you to find your ideal way of processing new information, whether it be visual, auditorial, kinesthetic, memetic, right brain/left brain, etc.

That's why I'm here! I pride myself on working with each individual student on the subtle ways that they learn and form healthy habits. If you have any questions about my teaching styles or methods please ask!

A little more about me:

I have over 10 years of guitar experience, studying under Jazz heavyweights Corey Christiansen, Oteil Burbridge, and Dan Miller. I pride myself in putting my students needs and wants above all else. I wish to impart a love for music onto my students that can only be cultivated by the bond a teacher and their student share, let us learn and grow together!

About Grant
Hello!

My name is Grant and I’ve been helping students grow for over 11 years now! How time flies! I started playing music at the age of 9 and have been in love with it ever since, staying active in my local music scene as an instructor, performer, manager, and booking agent.

I pride myself in taking a students learning needs and using that as my basis for their specific lesson plan, always on a case-by-case basis, tailored to each individual student. Everyone is at a different waypoint on their path so why would I use a predetermined formula to try and help them, am I right?

This can mean using a specific song as a goal and learning the specific techniques that we need in order to learn it as our curriculum. This could also mean finding out if a visual approach to teaching is better than an auditory one. I like to think of thes
e things for my students to make their learning as easy and effective as possible.

In addition to freelance work, (weddings, jazz brunch gigs, etc.) I am the lead guitarist for the Funk/R&B band Water Seed and the soul project RetroFit. I attended Indiana University for jazz guitar and have studied under jazz greats Dan Miller, Corey Christiansen, and Oteil Burbridge.

I teach all kinds of stringed instruments from guitar and bass to mandolin and banjo! If you have any questions about my teaching methods, skill level in a certain discipline, or anything you can think of I would be more than happy to answer you!

Musically yours,
Grant

Hi, I've been studying electric mandolin and guitar with Andrew for some time. He is so kind and enthusiastic, and really understands how to teach me at my level. He has been teaching me the deep theory behind improvisation in bluegrass, newgrass, rock, folk...and has an incredible mind full of music, riffs, scales, and chords from all genres. I've gone back and forth from guitar to mando with him, translating the same information onto the different fretboard, building my knowledge and appreciation of music, and I can now improvise confidently while playing out!

I've been playing guitar for the last 15 years and giving lessons for almost as long! I have a degree in music from the University of Miami and am currently touring out of Nashville. I'd like to think I have a fairly wide range of musical tastes (jazz, country, blues, acoustic, gypsy jazz, rockabilly, rock, etc.) and I enjoy the different challenges that each of my students bring to the table. So whether you're just wanting to strum a few old favorites at home, or if you're on your way to being a Nashville pro like me, I'd be happy to help you along your musical journey!

About Matthew
I picked up the guitar (at my father's encouragement) back in 2003 and never quite turned back! Originally from Kansas City, MO, I first got regular exposure playing in my high school's jazz band and in various other jazz groups, and was lucky enough to study extensively with local guitarists Rod Fleeman and Danny Embrey. I still make occasional trips back to my hometown to perform and record, and played on a couple of records with the KC-based group The Matt Cook Collective in 2016 and 2017.

My next stop was the University of Miami, where I attended the Frost School of Music from 2012-2016 and was fortunate enough to study with John Hart, Brian Russell, and Tim Jago I played with my first Grammy winner (multi-instrumentalist guru Charlie McCoy) and released an EP with Big City Folk Band in 2015. In between school semesters, I performe
d with country and jazz groups in Kansas City and gave lessons at KC Music, a local music store.

In 2017, I relocated to Nashville, began touring with country artist Derryl Perry, and recorded and released my first solo album, Aces. In between tour dates, I've been enjoying the task of expanding both my teaching studio and my guitar resume in this growing city.

I have also taken lessons from Gonzalo Bergara, Dan Wilson, Lorne Lofsky, Charlie Hunter, Jim Campilongo, Randy Vincent, Greg Koch, Guthrie Trapp, Brent Mason, and many more!

Update: will be at the Smoky Mountain Opry in Pigeon Forge TN in 2018!

I want students to excel the fastest they can on guitar. I will develop plans and keep track of progress so that students and I can stay organized and make sure the learning is fluent. I will direct lessons based on what the student wants to learn most and what genres of music they are interested in. The basics I want students to learn from my lessons are basic chords, fretboard knowledge and music theory, finger-picking styles, pick and strumming techniques, left-hand techniques, and most importantly I want to teach students how to listen. I will train students ears through ear training exercises and songs. The better the student’s ears can get, the better the musician they can be. Besides just teaching songs, I want students to understand the theory, technique, and meaning behind those songs. I specialize in jazz but am able to teach other styles such as rock, blues, classical, and pop.

About William
I have been playing guitar for seven years. At first, I learned many styles such as rock, classical, and pop, but in high school I fell in love with jazz. Since then, I've striven to become a master of playing tunes by great jazz artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Cole Porter, and Count Basie. I am currently attending California State University, Sacramento, working towards a bachelor's degree in music.

I am a multi-instrumentalist performing singer-songwriter with 20 years of teaching experience. I surround the lesson with a musical context that enriches the simplest of beginner melodies with fun, dynamic accompaniment - and I can
delve into far more advanced material in multiple styles: jazz, classical, improvisational, pop, rock, blues etc. I teach multiple instruments and also
compose with students - a creative process that engages them instrumentally and even lyrically.

These days, for younger students, I even invite parents to sit in on drums
- even if they are inexperienced. The results are fun and often very musical and encourage the family to make music together. My new open mic series brings the music into the community and provides performance opportunities in a relaxed setting at a local all-ages venue.

About Jim
Hello and thanks for considering lessons with me! I have been teaching all ages for over 20 years in Connecticut and I am also a performing singer-songwriter. I teach piano, guitar, voice, mandolin, bass, violin, saxophone, harmonica, songwriting, and more, including coaching students on a variety of instruments such as cello, banjo, accordion, etc.
From my website here is my music bio.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New England singer-songwriter Jim Allyn is known for his freewheeling improvisations on mandolin, guitar, piano and harmonica. “He plays a lot of good bluegrass too,” according to the legendary Bill Monroe.*

With a musical compass forged in roots, rock, country, blues, and gospel Allyn writes songs that cut a path straight to the heart and keep moving
.

This summer marks the release of his first full length album Backyards of the Brave, featuring all original works: true stories from train yards, backroads, battlefields and coal mines (see review below). Recent years have included multiple tour dates with folk legend Jonathan Edwards as a member of Edwards' band. Allyn has also performed extensively with Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul, and Mary) and at venues and festivals over the years including onstage jamming with Bela Fleck, Livingston Taylor, Dar Williams, Tom Chapin, Guy Davis, Christine Lavin, Vaneese Thomas, Chris Hillman of the Byrds, Newgrass Revival, Vassar Clements, legendary fiddler Kenny Baker, and many others. Allyn's multi-instrumental work and vocals are also heard on recordings by numerous regional artists.

As Music Director and co-creator of the Flagpole Radio Cafe in Connecticut (2008-2014) Jim and the house band/ensemble garnered rave reviews: a "hit" show, according to the New York Times. The band, featuring Francine Wheeler, continues to do concerts each year and the show itself is likely to resume this year.

Pianist Tom Snow offered this recent praise for Backyards of the Brave:

"This album is a treasure. The amount of sonic and compositional variety is really quite incredible. One of the many wonderful attributes of this creation is that it stands up to multiple listenings. There is so much richness on many levels that I find myself hearing new things on successive listenings. Priority Gal and Lindytown and This Old Guitar and Jazzbo are real stand-outs for me. I love the compositional subtleties that inform the songs, especially chord choices! "

Learn to play like your favorite musicians! From hard rock to jazz and everything in-between. I have been playing, teaching and performing for over 20 years and am currently a professional touring musician. I learned from some of the best instructors while at Berklee and have developed a very unique way of teaching. Instead of learning right out of a book, I teach you real world applications that you can take directly from your lesson to the stage (or your practice room). We will focus on your strengths and tastes and develop a style that fits what you love about music. Hope to hear from you soon!

About Mario
I've been playing guitar for 31 years and been a professional musician and recording/mix engineer for over 23 years.

After attending Berklee College of Music for jazz guitar and composition, I moved to San Diego and opened a recording studio, where I recorded and produced over 200 different artists.

Throughout my career I have taught private guitar and bass lessons to students of all ages and skill levels. Seeing people develop their own style and grow as musicians, is one of the things that brings me the most joy.

I am now in a nationally known touring band and travel about 5 months out of the year performing across the US and Europe.
