Combine subjects for a price break. For example 30 minutes of Math and 45 minutes of English would cost $50 separately, but would cost $45 for 75 minutes of Combined Tutoring. Simply choose ONE subject for the amount of tutoring time desired, and notify me which subjects you'd like to cover.

About Julie
I am passionate about Music and Music Education. It's rewarding for me to watch my students develop in their musical skill and enjoy making music more and more. My students range from the very young (5 years old) to school age children, to teens, and adults. My students benefit from my expertise in teaching Vocal and Piano music, my knowledge of Music Theory, and my encouraging teaching style. I have been involved in making music since I was a young child, and I have been teaching private students since I was a Music major at the University of Florida in 1982 when a fellow college student asked me to teach her voice lessons. I have a Music Education degree from the University of Florida; my major instrument was Voice, my minor was Piano. I taught as a public school music educator in Florida, California, and Tennessee between the years
of 1983 to 1997. I taught private students after school in my classroom while I was a public school teacher, and from my home since 1997. My post-graduate continuing professional education includes Tennessee Arts Academy at Belmont University, Kodaly Pedagogy and Solfege Level 1 (vocal teaching techniques, do-re-mi, ear training), Orff-Schulwerk Music for Children Level 1 certification, Yamaha M.I.E. (Music In Education) Piano Lab certification. My professionalism and expertise are at your service. I will work together with you to insure an enjoyable and informative learning experience.

*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson in my studio would begin with a brief question/answer time with the student to learn how their week has gone, and how their music practice is progressing.

For PIANO LESSONS we begin with Technique including scales and dexterity exercises, then we play from the Lesson book and a Recital selection. I typically let the student play through the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to play the piece again. After that we go over the Theory assignments, and do Ear Training exercises. I am comfortable teaching from a variety of different methods courses. The methods course is chosen according to the student's interest. I never require a piano student to continue using books that are not inspiring. There so many methods courses available, that a student may always be able to have methods books they LOVE.

In my SINGING LESSONS we also begin with a recap of the student's week. Then we continue with Warm Up exercises to prepare the student's voice for the lesson. Then we study Sight Singing and Solfege Singing (do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do) to increase the student's listening skills. After that the student sings their selections. Like I do in Piano lessons, I listen to the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to sing the piece again. I am comfortable teaching many styles of vocal music including classical, Broadway, pop, rock, and Christian.

For MUSIC THEORY lessons, the study material is chosen according to the student's interest and age. Topics include notation, chord structure, chord progression, melodic structure, and harmony. I also incorporate Music Listening in the Music Theory lesson in order to learn from the masters in many styles of music. My Music Theory students will also have the opportunity to develop composition and songwriting skills if they desire.

My teaching style is structured and friendly, keeping the student's goals and interests at the forefront. I enjoy motivating students to reach their highest potential.
After 3 to 6 months in my studio my students will see improvement in their musical technique, ear training, music reading, notation, and knowledge. They will be preparing recital pieces for an upcoming performance. I provide two recital opportunities a year: in December, and in May. Most importantly, the student's love and appreciation of music will be growing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
PIANO lessons in Living Room: piano near front entryway, couch, loveseat, over-sized chair, dining room table, open space, end table with chair, parents may sit in on lesson.

SINGING lessons in Recording Studio: keyboard, recording equipment, desk, 2 chairs, music stand, microphone, private room. Parents may wait in adjacent rec room or sit in on lesson.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide lesson books, the students should provide their instrument.

I do have a mobile keyboard to bring for SINGING lessons.

*** Specialties ***

With a background in teaching and learning with a specialization in special education and behavioral therapies: Monique can determine which method or approach best suits your student's needs and customize lessons to overcome frustration and remove barriers to comprehension and retention.

About Monique
I specialize in teaching students with autism or other similar behavioral/learning challenges. I am a Registered Behavior Tech with a graduate level degree who is currently pursuing a post graduate certificate to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). I am trained in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapies.

I have been sharing the joy of playing guitar with others since 1983. I attended Guitar Institute of Technology from September 1984 to September 1985 and still hold the title as the youngest female graduate at the school to this day. I later earned a Masters degree in teaching and learning to enhance my skills as a teacher in music and in other areas of education; but I learned some very valuable skills in my graduate program that give me an edge over teachers without an advanced degree. I have studied how people learn,
how learning styles vary and how to identify and accommodate various learning styles in order to get the most from each individual student and teach each student in the most effective manner according to their particular learning style.

*** Lesson Details ***
While I may have formal training in teaching, my actual approach is very holistic. I like to get to know my students; I want to know about them- what kind of music they are interested in and how they learn best. Once I determine the type of learner that I am working with and what the student would like to achieve, I then use that to develop an individualized approach for that student. I believe that fundamentals are necessary and good, but I also believe that those fundamentals should be put to use in a manner that accommodates the student and their particular likes and musical goals as quickly as possible. What good are concepts without application? I want to see students playing with skill AND with joy because they are able to play what they love to listen to and even more....I like to see students create their own music with the skills that they acquire.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student needs instrument, writing tools, paper, CD player or MP3 player.

*** Specialties ***
(Autism Spectrum Disorders
ABA trained)
I don't necessarily specialize in any particular method, especially given the fact that I am accustomed to customizing curriculum in the educational realm. I evaluate each student's individual styles, abilities and desires with regard to what they want to learn.

Monique is a great teacher

I am delighted with Monique. She is very professional and is very comfortable teaching. The lessons have just the right pace and she is good at building on fundamentals. As an adult learner, I am glad to have a mature teacher I feel comfortable with. That rapport is an important element for me as a beginning student.

With a bachelors degree in biology, I have studied a large majority of the natural sciences. I taught high school biology at Tippecanoe Valley High School and had the privilege to inspire the next generation of scientific minds. I currently tutor several college students in their more advanced classes, as well as high school students.

About Benjamin
I have extensively studied vocal performance for many years and continue to add to my own technique. I have a Master of Vocal Performance Degree from the Chicago College of Performing Arts. I currently work for a recording studio (Sound Summit Studios in Naperville IL) where I teach voice and help singers record their music in the studio. I have previously taught at The School of Rock in Indianapolis Indiana. I have administered vocal lessons to every voice type at all different levels. Several of my students have recored albums and are currently performing all over the U.S.

I have a bachelors degree in biology with a minor in art. After graduating college, I was a full-time high school biology teacher, volleyball coach, and director of the school musical. As a high school teacher, I learned first hand the kind of pressure and expectat
ions that are placed on students in order for them to succeed. In college, I was the head student researcher on a two-year lab project. I took several upper level science courses including: biochemistry, calculus, organic chemistry, calculus based physics, cell biology, anatomy, and physiology. I studied marine biology in the Virgin Islands and am CPR certified.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice lessons with me are fun and effective. You can expect to hear improved technique from day one, eventually reaching your long term goals. I begin every lesson aligning the students voice through various vocal warm ups and exercises. We then work together to pick repertoire that will suit the singer'€™s voice and they will enjoy singing. During a lesson we will also cover performance presentation, acting, diction, rhythm, musicality, style, and interpretation.

During tutoring you can expect a personalized plan based on your goals and aspirations. Since every student is different you can be assured we will come up with a plan that is designed just for you. I am a laid back tutor but will be sure to get the most out of you after our time together. Most students see at least a one letter grade improvement. My main goal for every tutoring session is student learning and comprehension.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, recording equipment, large collection of sheet music

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in helping students find their true singing voice.

This tutor does not fill the total time paid for. If the student has no more questions, rather than structuring the lesson like other tutors he will simply finish early! I am sure he is very knowledgable, but his accent is very strong, making learning a newer subject harder through trying to understand new words with a strong accent.
A fan was constantly ticking in the background, and he admitted his internet connection was poor.

Yeah, I'm a physical science guy, but I can help you with bio if you really need it, along with any other science you might have prior to graduating high school. I was originally a biomedical engineering major...in fact, our school currently has a program to help our kids prepare for the biology keystone exam... I have those resources at my fingertips. But while I'm strong with bio, it's the physical sciences where I'm best.

About Hank
Stop right there!
You finally found me: your one-stop shop for chemistry, physics, and generally-all-things-physical-science-related help!

Who I am: I am a veteran physics, chemistry, engineering, and tech-ed teacher at the Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy. My Pennsylvania teaching certifications are in chemistry, physics, and technology education. I have been at the school since it opened its doors in 2009. Prior to teaching, I worked as a chemical engineer and a stock trader. I've performed on Broadway (yes THAT one in NYC), and I used to play the bassoon. I love to ski and play with my two children.

Why I am here: I mentioned that I was a chemical engineer by education... but now I'm a teacher?!?? Why would I forsake a much more profitable career for one in education? Because I love teaching :) In the years that I di
dn't teach, I always found some hobby that involved teaching people to do stuff, whether it was being a ski instructor at Seven Springs, teaching tennis lessons, tutoring family friends, or teaching a session on stock markets and trading at CMU. I'm a teacher now, which means that I have most of my summer off. That's where you come in.

Why you should hire me: A book can teach you a lot of stuff, and if you are one of those few individuals who absorbs everything they see or read and become instant masters (think Neo learning Jiu Jitsu in the Matrix), then you don't need me, and really, you don't need anyone here. But if you're like most people, then some of the concepts might be a bit tricky and often a few helpful analogies and rephrasing of material is necessary. That's where I excel. If you struggle with concepts, I work to find ways to get the information into your mind in a way that might be more meaningful to you.

For example, I was teaching students about Newton's Third Law (action and reaction). I asked them if they had ever been driving down a highway and hit a bug. They answered yes, and then I asked them why the bug splattered instead of the windshield. Categorically, they gave me the incorrect answer of "well, the bug hit the windshield with more force, didn't it?" I didn't answer them, but instead I showed them a video clip of a drag race between a Lamborghini Aventador and a Bugatti Veyron. Both cars went 0-60 in under 3 seconds. Pretty impressive. I turned off the video and asked them the question about the bug again, and they seemed confused, so I nudged them a bit more. "How long did it take that Veyron to go from 0-60?" A student shouted out, "about 2.6 seconds!" Then I asked him, "and how long did it take that hovering insect to get from 0 to 60, which is how fast your car was going when you hit him?" Suddenly, light bulbs started to flicker... "that was instant, like milliseconds!" I smiled as others started weighing in. "Yeah, that bug went 0-60 in under a second, so its ACCELERATION was greater!" So I finally answered, "correct, the force of the bug hitting the windshield is EXACTLY the same (but in the other direction) as the force of the windshield hitting the bug. Using Newton's Second Law equation, F=ma, if the forces are equal, but the mass of the car is MUCH MUCH bigger than the mass of the bug, it's easy to see what happens...[huge differences in acceleration]. And that is what ultimately destroys the bug. It's like a phrase I once heard from a skydiver--it's not the fall that hurts. It's the sudden stop at the end that can kill ya."

I hope that example gives you insight into the type of tutor that I am. I hope to hear from you!

PS... you might think that my online rates don't reflect the standard discount that many other tutors here give their students. That is true. While I don't shun technology, I also understand its limitations. Both of my specialties (chemistry and physics) involve a lot of equations and drawings... these are easily conveyed in short time when face to face. But when having to draw on a camera and/or type equations with lots of subscripts and superscripts, a lot of time is wasted. I don't discourage online help outright, but I don't recommend it as an initial session. That is why my prices display only a modest discount.

Mr. Lancet is my conceptual and AP Physics C teacher in high school at Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy. He is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He makes difficult concepts simple and relatable to everyday life so that his students can understand and practice high level concepts with ease. His unique teaching style makes every class fun, happy, and energetic. His positive attitude radiates into his students making the learning environment much better than the average class. Mr. Lancet does more than just get his students to pass a national exam, he manages to show them how to think creatively and analytically to give them skills they can use for the rest of their lives no matter what field they chose to enter. What he teaches does not just stick in his students' minds for the duration of his class but rather stays with them. He posses the rare skill to make his students interested in learning, allowing them to retain more of the information presented to them. Unlike traditional teachers, Mr. Lancet creates unique and fun experiments that test what knowledge his students have gathered in his courses and provide them with first hand accounts of the conceptual and theoretical topics covered in his classes. After I graduate from high school, if I am ever confused about any topic, related to the physical sciences or otherwise, Mr. Hank Lancet would be my first call. In no circumstance would I ever hesitate to hire Mr. Lancet should I require the aid.

I had Mr. Hank as an engineering teacher at my high school. What you will quickly see is that he has a wealth of knowledge just waiting to be shared with others. He is able to teach nearly every aspect of engineering, whether that be technical instruction or explaining what goes into being a good engineering student.

It seems that his teaching style is leading students to their own conclusions by giving them hints and guidance along the way including physical examples and practice work. Mr. Hank also is an incredibly patient teacher/tutor. He will use as many approaches as necessary to make sure that you will understand a topic.

I would not hesitate to hire Mr. Hank as a tutor. If you need help in science or engineering, I guarantee that you will have a very rewarding experience with Hank.

About Ulyana
My name is Ulyana and I'm passionate about teaching and tutoring! I graduated with a B.S. from Rice University (Houston, TX), specializing in earth sciences. During my years there, I traveled quite a bit - including to Antarctica! - and took part in many science outreach activities with young students. While doing a Masters in planetary geoscience at Brown University (Providence, RI), I gained field experience in Iceland and used it as a research analog to past climate conditions on Mars. For my PhD, I trekked over 1500 miles in Nepal, studying glacial lake flooding hazards to Sherpa villages, as well as impacts of pollution on pristine high mountains, including Mt. Everest.

Our most recent was to the top of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa.

When I was in my teens, I participated in many science fairs and symposia at the national and international level. Then I went to college and grad school in science. Pretty much, science has been my life! For any of your science needs, with a special focus on astronomy and geology (earth sciences), I'm here to help. I can also assist with physics, biology and chemistry. The sciences are interrelated and I've used them all in the past and in my current work. The same goes for math.

If you're interested in creative lessons - with a true focus on your learning experience, I'm your tutor! Often times when working out in the field in extreme locations (e.g., Antarctica and Mt. Everest), I have to MacGyver solutions on the fly. I want to teach you how to think. This skill will serve you well, long into the future.

I can help with subjects that you're finding difficulty in for a class in school, prepare for tests, or help strengthen your knowledge for a given subject, helping you find or fulfill the curiosity toward the world around you through science. I studied Neuroscience at UCLA, and during my time there gained a deep knowledge and understanding of not only Neuroscience, but of chemistry, physics, and life sciences, as well as more specific subjects such as astrophysics, that I'd love to share with you, helping you master the subjects that you need help with. Feel free to send me a message and get to know me better, and if we're a good fit, I look forward to tutoring you!

About Sanjay
Music is my passion, and I've been playing drums for about 16 years and guitar for about 9, and have a deep interest for music of all genres, especially rock, jazz, hip-hop, r&b, and alternative. In high school, I played on my school's drumline, and learned immeasurable lessons about technique, and about how to practice in the most effective and efficient ways possible, to meet the strict demands of the marching style of drumming, eventually becoming the captain of my drumline. At the same time, I began playing in bands with my friends, learning how to channel creativity through the instrument while writing songs, and simultaneously learning many of the skills (such as recording, mixing, engineering, playing live) that nicely balanced the theoretical and technical things I learned on the drumline. I attended UCLA, receiving a B.S. in Neur
oscience in 2017, and during my time there, I was able to take a plethora of classes on music theory, music history, music production, and had the opportunity to learn from some of the most well-renowned and well-employed studio musicians in the Los Angeles area. While I have the theoretical and technical background to ensure that you're learning things in a structured, thoughtful, and efficient manner, I won't bog you down with the intellectual side of music if that isn't what you want. Instead, I want to focus on helping you create art, and improving your abilities to the point that they won't hinder your ability to express yourself through music.
