About Nathan
I have been teaching private lessons for close to 10 years and have been an active performer for even longer, playing in all different types of groups, from rock bands and jazz groups to orchestras and brass bands. I studied music at Frostburg State University (Bachelors) and the Peabody Conservatory (Masters). I can teach just about any age and skill level and cover anything you are interested in learning; whether its a certain style, genre, technique or song.

My lessons are laid back, with a focus on perfecting the basics. Most students work out of a method book appropriate to their skill level. Aside from that we'll also spend time learning songs and pieces of the students choice. With the right amount of effort, you'll know your way around your instrument in no time at all

*** Travel Equipment ***
Will provide sheet music and exercises. My students should have a working instrument as well as any method book or sheet music we are working on.

The trumpet is one of the most demanding yet rewarding instruments. As a dominant voice in classical and jazz; the trumpet can be a section or solo instrument.

As his primary instrument, Vince began playing trumpet in 1998. He took lessons provided by his elementary school. Vince advanced rapidly, quickly winning principle chair in school ensembles and later with select county and state wide bands. He participated in many solo competitions performing classical and jazz trumpet throughout middle and high school.

In 2003, Vince began studying classical trumpet privately with Mark Klose then later with John Maguda. Vince studied many of the classic methods including Arban's Complete Conservatory Method, Schlossberg's Daily Drills and Technical Studies, Clarke's Technical Studies, and Stamp's Warm-Ups & Studies. Vince also studied solo repertoire by Hindemith, Haydn, and Kennan among others.

While cultivating the classical foundation, Vince focused on jazz trumpet by listening,

About Vince
“Basically he’s the go-to cross-genre horn-blowing utility man of the Philly scene” (John Vettese). Vince Tampio is a professional trumpeter, arranger, composer, and multi-instrumentalist based in Philadelphia, PA. Although firmly rooted in jazz, he is comfortable with a wide variety of genres including rock, soul, funk, folk, classical, and electronic.

Vince’s most recent solo album Live at PafA (2017) “is a contemporary instance of fusion done right,” and whose “nontraditional instrumentation maintains a spacious environment that proves ideal for a set brimming with imaginative, drawn-out improvisation” (Matthew Aquiline). This project was recorded as part of HotHouse at PafA After Dark: a concert series of the Philadelphia Jazz Project. Live at PafA was preceded by Syzygy (2014) and Syzygy: Remix (2014). Vince is currently self prod
ucing four more solo albums. One unreleased composition was recently featured in The Philadelphia Real Book Volume 1.

Vince has appeared as a side man on more than 25 albums. He is the trumpeter and arranger with the York Street Hustle, the John Byrne Band, the Cat’s Pajamas, and You Do You. He is a founding member of the Philly Phatness horn section, which has recorded with regional, national, and international artists, and on film soundtracks. Vince also writes and arranges for the Uptown String Band, a member of the Philadelphia Mummers String Band Association.

Vince earned the Masters of Music degree in Jazz Performance from the University of the Arts; and earned the Bachelor of Science in Music degree concentrating in Jazz Studies and Theory & Composition from the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz. He studied trumpet through undergraduate and graduate school with Rebecca Coupe Franks, Dennis Wasko, and John Swana. Vince has also attended master classes held by Matt Gallagher, Craig Morris, Claudio Roditi, Malcolm McNab, Scott Holbert, Jeffrey Curnow, and Alison Balsom.

Vince first began teaching music in 2006 as the trumpet instructor at Silver Creek Central School. He directed trumpet master classes for high school students. Vince later took on various private students teaching trumpet, guitar, electric bass, improvisation, and arrangement and composition. While earning his Master of Music at the University of the Arts, he served as the trumpet department intern and was responsible for teaching private trumpet lessons, preparing transcriptions for class materials and live performances, and proctoring music theory exams.

Also at UArts, Vince was a teaching assistant for the Freshman Jazz Improvisation class for which he conducted sectionals, administered exams, and offered critiques regarding inventiveness of improvisations. He currently teaches a number of electric bass students at Philadelphia's Rock to the Future. Vince privately teaches trumpet, electric bass guitar, ear training, music theory, improvisation, arrangement, and composition to students of all ages and levels.

Since each student approaches music differently; I tailor my teaching to fit their approach. I ask each student, "What are you aiming to accomplish?" Together, we set short and long term goals. I believe a strong technical foundation leads to freer ease of artistic expression. My students receive a holistic approach to music applicable to whatever instrument of their choice.

Fast becoming a sought after trumpeter and arranger, Vince continually pursues work performing, arranging, composing, teaching and recording original music.

Quotes:

"Vince Tampio proves himself a very creative composer. I look forward to hearing more from this upcoming composer & instrumentalist." (Fred "Rock Steady Freddie" Reiter)

"Vince plays his horn with creative passion and soul, his tone is very open and full these two combined make him one of the leading up and coming young jazz trumpet players of today." (Rebecca Coupe Franks)

"I've had the great pleasure of working with Vince as an arranger and writer. His music explores many styles and directions, and is always well crafted. He has an original and distinctive voice as a player, an arranger, and a writer. Such dedicated talent deserves to be heard, and I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot from Vince in the future." I can help beginners get started or coach advanced students who are preparing for auditions.

About Thomas
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

My son was very nervous about his first online lesson. His instructor had him start right in on the lesson, which helped my son quickly get over his nerves. By the end of the lesson, he was all smiles and feeling very confident about his ability to play a very hard piece for his solo contest. He is looking forward to his next lesson.

Playing a brass instrument is a physically demanding, high concentration activity that can lead to immense joy and fulfillment when approached correctly. I offer all my students practical and musical ways to master the trumpet that will lead to life long enjoyment. I will equip you with fundamentals for healthy practicing and can offer lessons in several styles, including jazz, classical, and salsa. Additionally, I have helped students prepare for school, district, and regional auditions.

About Ethan
Whether I am playing salsa, solo classical piano, in a jazz ensemble, or a concert band, I am ALWAYS having fun doing what I love, and I want you to have the same experience. After moving to Philadelphia ten years ago to study at Temple University, where I received my Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance, I have had many great opportunities to play all types of music with all types of people. While my passions are in jazz music, composing, and arranging, my varied experience helps me pass on the fundamentals necessary to becoming a great musician while also adapting to your goals, needs, and musical preferences.

*** Lesson Details ***
I want you to have a fun, loving relationship with music. I aim for students to leave each lesson eager to practice and explore, and to come back with questions and stories of their progress. In each
lesson, I balance technical skills, ear training, and music theory to assure that each student walks away a complete musician, all structured around your musical goals.

I look forward to helping you on your musical journey.

*** Travel Equipment ***
The student must provide their own instrument and assigned method books. I will provide a music stand if necessary, and other useful instructional tools (metronome, tuner, etc.)

*** Home Studio ***
I offer lessons in my home located just off of Broad Street in South Philadelphia near the Tasker-Morris subway stop. I am equipped with a well-playing upright piano and plenty of space for musical activities. There is ample street parking in the area during the afternoon and early evening, and our living room is available to parents while students take their lesson. Students who travel to me for lessons gain all the benefits of performing on a piano, rather than an electric keyboard, and have access to many more resources that I am able to offer from my home, such as recordings and method books.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize teaching younger students fundamentals in music in a fun and exciting way, as well as teaching the importance of learning music to exceed personal and educational goals.

We (me and my 6 year old daughter) have taken piano lessons for more than 1 year now, and it has been amazing experience for both of us. He is very knowledgeable, patient and enthusiastic music teacher. We had no experience to start with, but now both of us are comfortable with the instrument and the music notes. He is very flexible with his teaching style to accomodate personal preferences and levels.
I would certainly recommend him to anyone who wants to learn piano.

Both me and my daughter have been taking piano lessons from Ethan since last 8 months. He is an amazing teacher and has proved beyond doubt, that he can teach music to a person of any age. He is very adaptable to our specific goals and works alongside, as per our capacity to help us achieve what we intend to. I had no experience with music or piano whatsoever before this and started the lessons to learn a new skill. Over the months, I have not only developed interest in piano but also been able to play with confidence. I had experience with couple of more teachers before we got him, and he is certainly the best. Would highly recommend him.

A graduate of the famous Curtis Institute of Music, Lori A has played all over the world. She has played with greats such as Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, Pavarotti, and Leonard Bernstein. After being invited to the White House, she performed for President Reagan.

About Lori
Hello! Thank you for your interest in my profile.
I teach piano, horn, trumpet, theory & ear training, and coach ensembles, performance class as well as music and movement class for ages 0-6, and drum circle and cultural literacy for adults.

I am a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, and I've played all over the world. I've played with soloists from Frank Sinatra to Diana Ross, Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons to Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo. I still perform and consider this important to my teaching as well.

Some major accomplishments include an invitation to the White House, over 50 solo performances with orchestras starting with The Philadelphia Orchestra at age 15, a performance for the Princess of Thailand, and early television performances starting at age 7. In order to accomplish these things, I had great teach
ers, a regimen of discipline and practice, an expectation I have of my students, and all the rewards that have lasted a lifetime. Properly taught music lessons are life lessons and are never a waste. I incorporate fun into the lessons as discipline and fun must be combined for success and enjoyment at all levels.

My teachers included Eleanor Sokoloff, Susan Starr, and Dale Clevenger.

I've taught for 29 years, and have a proven track record of success. I've taught at Universities including The University of Notre Dame, The University of Tennessee, The Chinese University and the Academy of Performing Arts in Hong Kong. I adore my students. Each one needs to be assessed and taught differently. Something you cannot learn in school, only through years of experience!

I teach in Avondale-Kennet Square-Chaddsford, Bryn Mawr-Villanova, PA, Hockessin-Wilmington,, DE, Newark, DE, and Cherry Hill, NJ with possibility of travel 10 minutes away. Please note: If you want in home piano lessons, you need a reasonably high quality instrument, and must maintain the tuning. I have perfect pitch and it will be crucial to me.

While I had previous experience playing an instrument MANY years ago, I never played the piano and started taking lessons with Lori as an adult. In almost no time I was able to read the bass clef (left hand) notes and within the year I had learned all the scales (majors and relative minors - both harmonic and melodic) and arpeggios (root and inversions). I was also playing "real" pieces of music.

Lori stresses good technique and good practice habits and can suggest more than one way to master a concept. She also makes learning the piano fun.

I love teaching. I go into every lesson with the belief that the student is there to learn; if they weren't interested in learning, they wouldn't be there. Because I have always had diverse musical interests, I create a stress-free atmosphere for my students by allowing them to pursue whatever avenues of music interest them. My degrees may be in Jazz Studies and Performance, but I have extensive experience with Classical and Popular music; I provide a unique perspective and enthusiasm to every student.

About Michael
I am a professional trumpet player, singer, arranger and educator based in Manayunk within Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Born into a musical family in Peoria, IL, I began playing cello at thde age of two, but eventually was drawn to jazz trumpet and voice, while having a keen sense of music theory and piano. I studied music at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and Northwestern University. While at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, I was awarded a FIPSE grant to travel to Brazil and study traditional samba music. While there, I worked as a clinician at Faculdade Cantareira in Brasilia. After CCM, I received my Masters in Jazz Studies from Northwestern University under the tutelage of Victor Goines (tenor saxophonist for Jazz at Lincoln Center) and Brad Mason (Current Musical Director for Blood, Sweat and Tears), during which, I was selected t
o perform as the “jazz trumpet” chair in part of Disney’s highly selective All American College Band.

After graduate school in Evanston, IL, I moved into the heart of the city of Chicago. For 3 years, I played trumpet and sang jazz standards most Thursday evenings at the famous Green Mill Cocktail Lounge, one of Chicago’s oldest jazz clubs. In addition to that, I helped start The Syndicate, my hip-hop brass band that offers a blend of funk, R&B and jazz. I also played with other groups such as Four Star Brass Band, and J-Livi and the Party, which released an album in July of 2016 called “Come and Share My Life," whom I still play with.

In addition to playing trumpet, I also am an accomplished classical singer, presently predominantly performing with the Crossing, a Grammy Nominated professional chamber choir conducted by Donald Nally. This 17-18 season, I'm singing with Conspirare, Apollo’s Fire, The Crossing, Vocal Arts Ensemble (Cincinnati), Variant 6, Madison Choral Project, ekmeles (NYC), and Choral Arts Philadelphia. Recently, I made my debut as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra performing Chris Deviney’s “Pat Metheney Concerto.”

I am a passionate teacher and I work to understand each individual and help achieve the goals we set together. I love working with special needs and accommodations.

About Sandra
Hi, I'm Sandra and I have been teaching in the Bay Area since 2006. I have a passion for working with young students, especially those with special needs, in a fun and encouraging environment. I design individualized lesson plans and your child will have clear direction of weekly goals. I expect my students to work towards mastery and passion for themselves through their talents with the trumpet, and music in general.

I have backgrounds in music performance and psychology, and I use both to understand your child's needs and working styles engaging them to find the most progress out of lessons. I have a holistic approach combining music with students specific interests to form discipline to learning the trumpet.

How does your service stand out?
My studio requires students to practice a minimum of 30 minutes every day with wee
kly progress reports, weekly listening to music for their instrument with evaluations, semester auditions, and recitals. I require students to video record each practice session so I can verify practice time as well as provide suggestions to maximize efficiency. I encourage involvement with outside music ensembles and we take field trips to watch professional musicians. Any student with enthusiasm is welcome in my studio!!

What do you enjoy about the work you do?
I love getting to know all different students and seeing them grow. I look long term for satisfaction with my job, it barely feels like work. I get to make music daily with really cool kids, what could be better than that?!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I start wherever the student is. We work on fundamentals regardless of ability, and I assess what level the student plays to make a decision on what materials we use.

How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching when I was in high school to help my band director out. I always wanted to be the type of teacher that was similar to my mentors; compassionate, hard working, enthusiastic, and patient. I began teaching professionally when I was in music college and continued to enjoy working with all types of students.

What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students as young as 6 and as old as 70. I work with special needs in any form. I work with students that practice really hard to attain a specific goal and others who are only trying to get better for band music.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone who can thoroughly answer your questions and will also be flexible to meet your needs. Make sure the teacher still takes enrichment classes to keep current with research, their instrument, and to help develop better and newer ways of teaching.

I offer in-person and online lessons ranging from 45-90 minutes.

Ms. Laverty has been my son’s private trumpet teacher since the summer of 2012. She is patient, kind and very supportive of his efforts in playing the trumpet. In large part, she is the reason that my son enjoys playing trumpet and continues to thrive as a musician.

From the beginning she tailored her lessons to include the music that my son was interested in and also added increasingly more complex music to work on and master.

Sandra has taped him playing during lessons to show him how and where he can improve in body position, quality of sound and other nuances. She regularly uses her laptop computer to show videos of performances that support the lesson and also assigns various Internet sites to view for exposure to other musicians and styles.

Sandra regularly provides opportunities for my son to perform in public. He has performed at the annual CMEA event at San Jose State University, and other smaller events where he played solo on stage. They have both joined in at a local café for practice in improvisation, as my son loves to play jazz. This has really helped in his jazz solo opportunities at school. She has also organized a quartet of student trumpet players to work together on various music pieces and then they all performed together for family and friends. This was a unique experience for the children to practice and play together and perform as a group.

My son is also interested in basketball and baseball, and Sandra has been very flexible in scheduling lessons to accommodate my son’s athletic and school schedules. After about 6 months of lessons, she offered twice a week lessons to capitalize on my son’s enthusiasm and increase the speed of musical advancement so his confidence soared and he wanted to play more because he liked doing something he felt he was good at. He kept this schedule for about a year and then back to once a week to allow for more time for other interests.

During middle school, my son played trumpet in both the Advanced Band and also Jazz Band classes. This past summer, Sandra again offered twice weekly lessons to get ready for his high school debut. As a result, he was chosen to play first chair in the high school jazz band. He was also one of only two freshmen that were accepted into the most advanced band class (also known at Wind Ensemble) at Lincoln High School.

I recommend Sandra Laverty, without reservation, for any trumpet teaching opportunity.
