I have been teaching this subject for over 16 years. There is no specific curriculum as each student will come to lessons with their own unique skills, needs, and goals. Lessons are tailored to those specifics. It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Music is not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it will be selected from the western classical rep based on the student's learning needs and with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

About Troy
Composer Troy W. graduated from the New England Conservatory, earning his Bachelors, Masters (cum laude) and Graduate Diploma while studying with mentor Malcolm Peyton. After spending a year studying with Lukas Foss in Boston, Mr. W. moved to Houston in 2001 where he continued graduate studies at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.

During his time as a teacher with the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, Troy taught classes in music fundamentals and music theory for pre-college students. He has also served on the faculty of the Summer Institute for Piano teaching courses in Form & Analysis for pre-college students.

Troy also has maintained a private studio, tutoring and teaching private lessons in composition, ear training, voice, piano, literature, and history for over ten
years. Students who have studied with him come from a wide range of backgrounds with different goals. Those who have continued with musical studies in college have consistently placed out of at least the first two semesters of music theory and achieved advanced placement in their chosen fields of study. Those who chose a different path continue to benefit from the education and training they received from taking music lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
There is no "standard formula" to lessons. Each student has their own unique background, needs, and goals. Lessons tend to be somewhat casual but are structured in such a way as to meet the unique requirements of the student.

To accomplish your goals, there are a few requirements and basic expectations that the student and parent must meet.
The first is practice. Students are expected to practice daily for at least the length of their lesson time. This, above all else, is essential to progress. It is also expected that a parent will attend lessons for students who are too young to drive themselves here. It's important for a parent to guide the student's practice time (particularly for younger students) to ensure that the most is gained from it. This is why I ask that a parent observe lessons.
Each student or parent should bring to each lesson a notebook, pencils (with erasers). The notebook will be used to record notes about each lesson, homework, practice advice, etc. Pencils (not pens...nobody's perfect!) are used by composers to record their creations and performers to mark their music. Both of these essential practices are subject to changing thought and must be open to change. So no ink, please!

Performers: It is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson for beginners. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons and will be a large focus for all non-readers. Lessons are not learned "by ear." A certain amount of theory will be a part of every lesson just as technique and repertoire. Concerning repertoire, it will be selected based on the student's learning needs but also with their input. The main emphasis on performance lessons, however, will be technique and reading. Students should come to the first lesson prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.
Note: Voice students must be at least 16 years of age.

Composers: Just as with performers, it is not necessary to know how to read music at the first lesson. However, learning to read is required for subsequent lessons. Many young composers have great ideas but can only hear them in their heads or play them on an instrument. Lessons will allow you to obtain the skills to write them down with greater speed, accuracy, and clarity. More advance students will also include exploring a wider range of harmonic languages, advanced notation, instrumentation, orchestration, and aural skills. Students should come to the first lesson with examples of their work, either written, notated, or recorded in a digital format. They should be prepared to discuss their background & goals and the plan of their course of study.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
• To reschedule a lesson, more than one day notice is required.

• Make up lessons must be scheduled before the next regular lesson.

• A make up lesson cannot be scheduled in place of a regular lesson.

• If, for any reason, two 30-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 30-minute lessons, not one 60 minute lesson which is a different rate.

• If, for any reason, two 45-minute lessons are scheduled one right after the other, they will be charged as two 45-minute lessons, not one 90 minute lesson which is a different rate.

• the studio space is also inhabited by two lovely cats. Do consider this when signing up for lessons.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Yamaha DGX-650 weighted 88 keys full sized keyboard
area for parents to sit and observe lessons.

*** Specialties ***
Main area is in classical music and media scoring with secondary focus on musical theatre vocal performance and composing/arranging.

I have been teaching for the past 7 years and am passionate about healthy, comfortable singing. My lessons are structured to include vocal warmups/technique exercises, sight singing to strengthen musicianship and then the working of repertoire. I will have suggestions for repertoire, but also am happy to work on anything the student may be interested in.

About Charlea Lyn
Hello! My name is Charlea Lyn, and I want to begin by thanking you for taking a look at my profile. It has always been one of my firm beliefs that anyone can sing as singing can be defined by “uttering words or sounds in succession with musical modulations of the voice.” Therefore, with this mentality in mind I feel as though it is not a job, but more a privilege to be able to teach people to sing.

My parents say I started singing before I could talk, however, I seriously started taking lessons when I was 14. Over the course of my lessons, I fell in love with opera, and decided that was what I wanted to pursue as a career path. That decision led me to SUNY Fredonia, where I received my BM in Music Education and Vocal Performance, and later to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where I received my MM in Vocal Performance in May
'13 under the tutelage of Catherine Cook.

One of the most important things that I have learned thus far, is that singing is a truly expressive art form that requires hard work, diligence, and commitment. It is my goal to bring each of my students the farthest I can in healthily developing their technique as well as work on the emotional portrayal and fundamental building blocks of music. Although I teach each student specific to his or her individual needs and desires, my lessons usually consist of three parts - technique exercises, sight singing, and repertoire. Furthermore, other things that stay consistent are a comfortable and safe environment for the student, my undivided attention, all the information that I have to share with others, and most importantly FUN!

Although it is my personal decision to pursue opera and classical music, I have experience in musical theatre and am comfortable teaching a variety of genres. I truly believe that although each genre is different, the foundation and principles of healthy singing are the same.

Not every teacher is right for every student. However, I do my best to give all my students lessons in a comfortable and productive learning environment. I hope that you will take the next step of your path towards healthy and beautiful vocal production with me. Thank you for your time and consideration and I hope to hear from you soon!

I would recommend Charlea to anyone. I hadn’t sung since leaving elementary school 16 years ago and was really nervous about starting again. Charlea was welcoming and encouraging from the start. Each lesson is always fun which helps if you don’t have much confidence to begin with, afterwards Charlea sends an email with a reminder of how you did and what to work on for next time. 10/10.

Charlea is OUTSTANDING. Cant say enough about her professionalism and personality. She makes you feel comfortable and confident - no matter what level of singing you are at. I leave each session feeling so empowered. Shes a joy to work with - she’s someone who knows alot about singing and shes very humble. Feels like being in session with your close friend. I’d recommend her if you’re looking for an instructor who truly meets you wherever you are, makes your lessons consistenly meaningful, and most important makes you feel CAPABLE of achieving your goals. A+++

I love teaching. I go into every lesson with the belief that the student is there to learn; if they weren't interested in learning, they wouldn't be there. Because I have always had diverse musical interests, I create a stress-free atmosphere for my students by allowing them to pursue whatever avenues of music interest them. My degrees may be in Jazz Studies and Performance, but I have extensive experience with Classical and Popular music; I provide a unique perspective and enthusiasm to every student.

About Michael
I am a professional trumpet player, singer, arranger and educator based in Manayunk within Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Born into a musical family in Peoria, IL, I began playing cello at thde age of two, but eventually was drawn to jazz trumpet and voice, while having a keen sense of music theory and piano. I studied music at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and Northwestern University. While at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, I was awarded a FIPSE grant to travel to Brazil and study traditional samba music. While there, I worked as a clinician at Faculdade Cantareira in Brasilia. After CCM, I received my Masters in Jazz Studies from Northwestern University under the tutelage of Victor Goines (tenor saxophonist for Jazz at Lincoln Center) and Brad Mason (Current Musical Director for Blood, Sweat and Tears), during which, I was selected t
o perform as the “jazz trumpet” chair in part of Disney’s highly selective All American College Band.

After graduate school in Evanston, IL, I moved into the heart of the city of Chicago. For 3 years, I played trumpet and sang jazz standards most Thursday evenings at the famous Green Mill Cocktail Lounge, one of Chicago’s oldest jazz clubs. In addition to that, I helped start The Syndicate, my hip-hop brass band that offers a blend of funk, R&B and jazz. I also played with other groups such as Four Star Brass Band, and J-Livi and the Party, which released an album in July of 2016 called “Come and Share My Life," whom I still play with.

In addition to playing trumpet, I also am an accomplished classical singer, presently predominantly performing with the Crossing, a Grammy Nominated professional chamber choir conducted by Donald Nally. This 17-18 season, I'm singing with Conspirare, Apollo’s Fire, The Crossing, Vocal Arts Ensemble (Cincinnati), Variant 6, Madison Choral Project, ekmeles (NYC), and Choral Arts Philadelphia. Recently, I made my debut as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra performing Chris Deviney’s “Pat Metheney Concerto.”

I’ve always was a musician but only discovered my voice 10 years ago. I have gone through so many struggles to find my voice and I can help you find yours quicker than I did. I have gone through the wrong path and have had amazing teachers get me out of traps and dead ends and in return I’ve been able to help my students do the same. I’ve been teaching for 6 years now and it has been another passion of mine to see my students grow and achieve their dreams.

About Norman
I am a profesional operatic Bass from San Jose California and now living in Wilmington DE. While I was in California, I sung with many opera companies around the Bay Area. Now I am pursuing my performance passion on the East Coast.
Singing has been my number one passion but teaching comes in at a close second. I love seeing my students grow and watching the transformation they make while studying with me. I been teaching since 2012 and all my students have gone off to do amazing things. I hope you choose me to be your voice/piano teacher and I look forward to meeting you!

As a bass opera singer and professional voice over artist, I am dedicated to creating a healthy and beautiful sound with my own voice and the voices of my students. I will not come into our lessons saying there is a single way to sing. In fact, many genres require a great deal of varying vocal techniques and stylized voices. What I will do is help to lay a foundation in healthy singing so that you feel comfortable singing any genre. We will start by ensuring that your breath and vowel placement feels comfortable and from there move into repertoire of your choosing or some that I recommend based upon your interests. You will leave your tenure with me empowered to continue your passion and career for singing long after your lessons end. Music is meant to be shared. Together, we will help you to share the music and passion that you hold so dear.

About Matthew
Hello, my name is Matthew Fleisher and I am a professional opera singer based out of Philadelphia. As a current roster musician with Philadelphia Opera, I know what it means to perform at some of the highest levels houses in the country. My travels have taken me across the country, singing in over 20 productions in the last three years. Now, I am returning back to Philadelphia to teach full time as I once had. Previously a student teacher at the Masterman School, I have had a true passion for music education for as long as I have been a musician. My students have grown both personally and musically through our tenure together. This is because I offer lessons that not only grow your singing ability but help to enhance your comfort for performance, public speaking, and general engagement in the production of sound. Through our lesson plans,
you will even begin to see changes in how you speak as our core focus will be on breath control, vowel placement, and healthy vocalizing so that you may feel comfortable singing any genre of music. While we will focus on classical training, I want to work with you on whatever repertoire you’d like! If you’re preparing for your school’s musical, a great karaoke with friends, or just some fun shower singing, I will get you there.

Matthew is simply amazing! It's clear that he has the vocal expertise and experience as he led me through exercises and techniques that allowed me to sing notes I hadn't once thought possible. As someone who has been singing a long time, but hadn't always found the opportunity to learn through one-on-one training, he led me through a process that not only allowed me to sing at my best, but to understand how the voice worked and what experiences I should be having as I sang. Matthew truly wants to help his students learn their best and healthiest sound, so they continue singing for the rest of their lives. My vocal training wasn't just about learning to sing. It was about giving myself the opportunity to invest in myself and to see where my voice could take me. Matthew cultivated me being not just a better singer, but a more confident performer and professional.

I have been teaching for 10 years. I don’t just teach the technique of singing. I build a personal relationship with each student and help them not only to achieve their goals but also to help them grow in their confidence in their abilities. I am so excited to work with you!

About Sydney
Sydney Rose Cheung began studying musical theatre at age 8, and operatic music at age 10. At 14, Sydney began taking private voice lessons under Allison Amidon, a USC Professor of music. She has participated in opera concerts with a live orchestra including performing The Flower Duet, one of the most difficult Aria’s to perform on a technical vocal level, at the age of 13. Her many credits include but are not limited to: Maria in West Side Story, Maria in The Sound of Music, Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof, Christine in Phantom of the Opera, Marian in The Music Man, Cinderella in Into the Woods and many more.

Her passion for the performing arts collided with her love for students in 2010 when Sydney began choreographing and giving vocal lessons. She thrives off igniting the musical spark within children to help them build confidence and fi
nd their voices. Through music as a vessel, she teaches them discipline and hard work that they will carry with them throughout the rest of their lives. Sydney firmly believes that music can empower young people and equip them with the life skills they need to be successful.

I have been taking vocal lessons with Ms. Sydney for three years now and I can confidently say that she has taught me more than any other person. When I first came to her I was shy about my singing and I barely knew anything even though I took countless vocal lessons with other teachers. I knew that she would help me go a long way even after our first vocal lesson. She is special because she doesn’t just teach because she has to wants to help you grow and it’s clear that she cares.
