I can help beginners get started or coach advanced students who are preparing for auditions.

About Thomas
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.

He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.

My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

*** Specialties ***
music, band, orchestra, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, violin, viola, cello, string bass, piano, Percussion

The saxophone is my main instrument. Having played the sax for about 11 years, I specialize in the soprano, alto, tenor and baritone. I can provide lessons in classical and/or jazz saxophone, focusing on technique, standard repertoire and improvisation.

About Maria
At a young age, I found my passion through playing and listening to jazz and classical music and experiencing the interpersonal connections music creates. From performing to teaching, I love to share my passion for music with those around me.

Since graduating from Temple University with a B.M. in Music Education and Jazz Studies, I have played with musical groups in Europe and recently became a K-8 general music teacher in Philadelphia. Playing and teaching around the world and at home has given me great insight into how students need to be taught: with relevancy to their own lives while maintaining artistry and integrity.

My teaching experience ranges from private lessons and jazz workshops to summer music camps and K-12 music classes. I love teaching and will probably never stop!

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe it is impor
tant to solidify the foundations of music, so that the student can grow into a knowledgeable, expressive musician. My lessons are taught with a personal and energetic approach leaving the student excited and eager to further explore music. I always make sure that the student is having fun!

Learning an instrument is all about personal growth as a musician. I will help my students become better musicians week by week as long as they are willing to practice and come prepared for the lesson.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I will provide a metronome, tuner, music stand and some music books/repertoire. Student may need to provide their own lesson books.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical techniques, improvisation, composition and songwriting.

Maria is my first sax teacher and i loveeeed her. She is extremely patient, and knows how to teach (which is so important). She also inspires me for jazz solo pieces. I remember one time she just asked me to improvise and great music was "forced" out of my horn.

She is a great teacher and I would def have kept taking lessons from her if not she moved out of town. I am really hoping that she will return and do lessons with me again.

Strong instrumental playing begins with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of music and the simple act of making a sound from the instrument. Students learn to play music by ear first, and are later introduced to music notation. More advanced lessons emphasize sight-reading, expression, and improvisation.

A woodwind player since age 10, Thomas has experience as a performer and teacher. His previous education has included methodology classes on teaching specific instruments, and he is available to teach intermediate and beginning saxophone lessons.

About Thomas
No one ever regrets learning an instrument… yet many grow old wishing they had taken music lessons! A talent they’ll be able to develop their entire life, your children will thank you for giving them the chance to learn music. And bonus points for you: after just a couple years, you’ll have free entertainment every Christmas!

Or maybe YOU’RE the one that wishes to learn! It is never too late to begin learning an instrument. Yes, I'm trying to get you to sign up for lessons, and yes I sincerely mean that. Everybody has the ability, and if you’re determined and interested, there’s nothing stopping us from achieving this very special goal. (Interested in learning to compose? Scroll to the bottom to learn more.)

Everybody learns differently, and everybody likes different things. Whether it’s improvising or singing alongside a song you
love or reading through a classical concerto, I’ll help prepare you or your child to tackle a wide variety of styles, without missing out on any of the basics that turn good players into phenomenal musicians. We all know it’s not about being the best. It’s about having fun, and playing music well is definitely fun.

Practice makes perfect! Learning an instrument helps build self-confidence and discipline. If your child’s bored, distracted, or just needs a constructive hobby, music is a great place to get them interested in something that will help them feel better about themselves, and the effects will be felt across everything else they do, through better studying habits to a more patient, diligent work ethic.

It’s also relaxing! Stressed about work? Need an escape? Maybe you want to sound like [insert piano player here]. Everybody has the power to learn an instrument. Seriously, there’s no such thing as “talent.” Just start lessons and get practicing! It really is that simple, and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.

I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. We’ll learn how to read music just as easily as you read words; improvise and compose music of our own; and feel good playing any style: classical, jazz, rock, and all. My experience as a working musician in films, musical theater, and pop music, as well as classical concert music, allows me to appreciate and teach styles that many other instructors overlook, and I know full well that learning an instrument is not about becoming a professional; it’s about being able to connect to others or oneself through music… and also to just have fun! There’s no need to learn music we don’t like! It’s not about stuffing Beethoven into your kids’ ears… we just want to make music, be that Beethoven or Billy Joel.

Music lasts a lifetime. I know that’s a terrible cliché, but it’s true, and few other skills can claim that. I don’t want to sugarcoat it: it takes time to learn an instrument. It takes practice, and sometimes it’s frustrating. But the results are well worth it, and like a snowball rolling down a hill, the longer you do it, the faster you get… or something like that. There’s a legitimate analogy in there somewhere.

Now get out there and make some music! But start by signing up for lessons. I can’t wait to get started!

---

“What’s that chord?” “Why does all my music sound the same?” “How do I fix this voicing?” “I just can’t get it out of my head!” …sound familiar? You’ve probably hit a rut. Or maybe you’re just starting out. Either way, you want your music to sound new, exciting, and to come out exactly how you hear it in your head. Yes… you CAN learn to compose music, you CAN learn to be more creative, and you CAN learn to share your sound with the world.

Film music, classical, jazz… whatever your interest, all music comes from the same place, and by learning a handful of basic concepts, you can apply these to whatever style you’re trying to write. Learning to emulate another musician involves knowing what they’re doing. Learning to create a groundbreaking sound requires that you know what’s already been done, and how to achieve it. Step by step, we’ll work our way there.

We’ll learn how to write cool, interesting chord progressions, how to write beautiful melodies, and how to voice chords. We’ll learn how to control the mood of our music, from making it sound relaxed to adding tension wherever we want. Maybe you’re trying to write for an orchestra, or just a small band. By learning the basics, you can then easily break away from what’s been done and come up with something truly new… the goal of any aspiring composer!

My goal in teaching is to make my students better musicians in every aspect. I like to discuss the music with students, get them to think about the music in new and interesting ways, teach how to practice and philosophies for approaching musical styles. I like to teach theory and play piano with the students so that they understand what is going on in the music. Students can expect all of this and more while having fun and being able to express themselves through the music they want to play.

About Eddie
My name is Eduardo, but I like to go by Eddie. Music, since the first time I picked up the saxophone, has been the passion of my life. I almost always have an instrument in my hands or have music coming out of my speakers. I earned my degree in performance from the University of Miami in 2012 and have 1 year of experience teaching. Since I first started as a musician, besides becoming proficient on soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, I have also taught myself to play the piano, guitar, flute, and clarinet. Music is my passion and I want to bring this same passion to any student I teach.

I want lessons to be fun but also challenging and disciplined. I am very adamant about starting with a set of warm up exercises every day followed by scale work. But I also want the student to play what they want to play, so I will either ask them to find a piece to be approved by me or I will find a piece for them based on what they like and are looking for. Every student is different so I will treat them as such! I teach Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bari saxophones.

About Joseph
Hi there! I just recently finished my Masters in Clarinet Performance from the University of Maryland and I would love to teach your student! I teach both clarinet and saxophone and have 5 years of teaching experience. I have worked for the Richardson School of Music, FAME, and the SHARP program at William Wirt Middle School in Maryland as well as Cedar Shoals, East Jackson, Decatur, and other high schools in Georgia. I am also an avid learner and I believe that no two students should be treated or approached in the same way. I have been very fortunate to have so many great teachers in my life and I do my best to use everything they have taught me to help my students!

I received my Bachelor's of Music in Clarinet Performance from the University of Georgia and my Masters from the University of Maryland. I currently play clarinet and bas
s clarinet in The Florida Orchestra. Please feel free to visit my website at www.josephbeverly.com for recordings and more information about me!

One of the duties I have as an elementary and middle school band director was starting new students on various woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments.

About Art
I have been teaching music in some form for over 32 years. As a public school music teacher, I have taught at almost every level K-12. My primary duties have been as a band director, choral director, general classroom music teacher, and handbell choir director. As a general classroom music teacher, I have over 10 years of experience teaching guitar to between 15 to 25 students at one time! My professional performing experience has been primarily in popular music on both drums and bass guitar (both of which I have instructed privately).

One of my greatest enjoyments throughout the years has been starting students on their chosen instrument. I have extensive experience in teaching beginning guitar, bass guitar, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, and tuba. In addition, I have extensive experienced in taking a
student from the beginner level to the intermediate level in percussion/drum set (my primary instrument in high school and college).

As I begin to wind down my career as a public school teacher, I very much would love to build a solid career as a private music instructor. I believe that I have much to offer in this field, from my experiences spanning over three decades!

I currently teach students on the Eb Alto Saxophone, and am accepting more! I have been playing the saxophone since I was in middle school, and have continued to enjoy the instrument into adulthood! Apart from teaching, I also perform alto saxophone with a local community band that plays charity events throughout New Jersey where I am located. I love to play rock and roll along with jazz on the sax! Let's start playing together!

About Levon
Hey Everyone!

My name is Levon Syers and I have been a lifelong guitar player. I'm very passionate about music, and have performed hundreds of shows over the past 15 years. This included working with original bands and cover acts up and down the East Coast of the United States. Apart from the guitar, I also play the alto saxophone and clarinet as well! I typically play in community bands on these instruments, which will play at schools, charities and community homes in New Jersey where I'm from.

Regarding my education, I have a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Rowan University. I'm also 30 credits into earning my MA in English from Montclair State University. Apart from taking theory courses in high school and some during my undergraduate degree, most of my studying has come from my personal passion and desire to perform. A
fter getting into to teaching a while back, I realized that I really enjoy it! It is highly rewarding, and a great chance to share the joy of music with others. I currently teach at three different locations for two different businesses in NJ, and I've set up my profile on Take Lessons so that I can continue expanding my student base, which consists of students ranging from 8-70 years of age.

I am always studying music, even to this day, and constantly trying to understand new styles that are outside of my wheelhouse. My approach to teaching is simple: connect with the student, help find common ground in musical tastes and set up an engaging foundation with which the student can reach their goals while having fun in the process!

When students take lessons with me, they learn both how to play their instruments and how to have fun doing it! Music is food for the soul, and learning how to make it can and should be an uplifting experience.

For beginners, we will work out of a method book to establish basic foundational skills such as developing an embouchure, rudimentary saxophone technique, reading music, and more. From there, we can delve deeper into the worlds of classical saxophone, jazz saxophone, or any other style that we want.

About Daniel
Hi! I am a saxophonist, flautist, clarinetist, pianist, and, most importantly, a lover of music. I began taking piano lessons when I was five years old; ever since then, music has been a huge part of my life. I've played in concert bands, marching bands, jazz bands, rock bands, wedding bands, pit bands, etc!. I moved to New Jersey to study at William Paterson University's jazz program and to immerse myself in the fertile musical environment that this area provides. I am always looking forward to working with new students and helping others along on their own musical journeys. Can't wait to do the same with you!
