My teaching style puts a focus on realizing musicality and expression through proper playing technique. Playing for hours shouldn't be hard on your body! I work to make my students comfortable at their instruments so that their musical intentions can shine. I am a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher, and I look forward to meeting some new cellists!

About Rachel

I have a BFA in Cello Performance from UW-Milwaukee. As a student, I worked for the university as a tutor in Music Theory, at the recommendation of my professors. Since relocating to Philadelphia, I have established myself as an educator all over the city. I am the cello instructor at the Baldwin

It's no surprise that it's hard to learn an instrument as an adult. Apart from a semester of guitar lessons in college, I had no musical training and no understanding of music theory. All I knew was that I loved the sound of a cello, and I was graciously gifted one on my 28th birthday.

I am proud to say that I have been Rachel's cello student for over three years now. Since the beginning, Rachel has made sure that I felt comfortable during our lessons, and she remains reassuring even when I get discouraged with my bow hold or tight fingers.

Rachel has taught me a lot about music theory, but she's mostly taught me how to love my instrument. It has been amazing to see and hear the progress I've made, and she continues to give me more exciting challenges to practice each week. She's been attentive to my learning style and my ever-evolving cello goals, and I've been consistently impressed with how she's been able to keep our lessons interesting and fun over the years.

Rachel and I meet for an hour once a week and I look forward to every lesson! She has been the best instructor, and I look forward to many more lessons to come.
Jennifer
I’m an adult student and Rachael has been my instructor for almost two years now. She’s very knowledgeable and PATIENT! Ive grown so much in the past two years and I’m looking forward to more.

Outstanding start.

While I had previous experience playing an instrument MANY years ago, I never played the piano and started taking lessons with Lori as an adult. In almost no time I was able to read the bass clef (left hand) notes and within the year I had learned all the scales (majors and relative minors - both harmonic and melodic) and arpeggios (root and inversions). I was also playing "real" pieces of music.

Lori stresses good technique and good practice habits and can suggest more than one way to master a concept. She also makes learning the piano fun.

Excellent teacher, really good with teaching

Stephen does an excellent job of instructing and encouraging. I've always wanted to learn how to play an instrument but was a little intimidated due to my lack of experience. Stephen put my anxiety to rest and made me feel comfortable learning something new. Did I mention I am 52? Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Stephen shows it just takes the right teacher.

"After having been a student of Ahmad's for over a year now, I can earnestly say he is a quality instructor unlike any I've had before. He shapes each individual class specifically to what your guitar goals are, creating incredibly detailed and thorough handouts and exercises to help you get there. I am the type of student who learns best with a well-defined regime laid out clearly in front of me. His handouts are a perfect match for my learning style and you can tell the years of experience and knowledge that has gone into creating each one. He is also a very adaptive teacher helping me surpass some rhythm barriers in unique and creative ways. He had helped me gain a new appreciation and understanding for music theory and most importantly he helps keep it fun."

"Matt is AWESOME. He has been a great musical role model for me since day one. The knowledge that Matt has passed down to me has completely reallocated my purpose as a musician and challenged me to question my role as a drummer in an ensemble situation. What insight! I have absolutely no doubt that I will be prepared to confidently attend college university music ensembles in the next couple of months, because of Matt's mentorship and how it has inspired me (and of course, taught me how) to achieve my best. Matt has exposed me to styles of music I didn't even know existed. His talent is beyond the capacity of any other teacher I've had, and my family and I respect him very much. Very personable, easy-going, and intelligent. Thank you Matt, for everything. :)"

Dueling Piano Bars 101: Popular Songs for Piano to Request

Some of the best piano bar songs are requested at dueling piano bars. Haven't heard of dueling piano songs yet? Keep reading! The “dueling pianos” style of entertainment (which traces back as far as the 1890s) has experienced a recent resurgence in popularity in many big cities. Dueling piano bars are typically characterized by having two grand (or baby grand) pianos placed opposite each other, and two talented musicians performing and accepting audience requests for songs.
