I've been taking online lessons with Wei for the past couple of months, and I quite enjoy them. As an adult piano player, I don’t have specific goals. I just play for fun most of the time. Wei, nevertheless, made specific teaching plans for me. He learns my strength and weaknesses, and chooses pieces that are both enjoyable to play and technically challenging for me, so that I’m able to tackle my weaknesses. His expertise helps me improve in many ways, like piano techniques and overall understanding of music. After a few lessons with him, I gained confidence in playing. I’m able to improve my performance of the pieces I love. Besides, Wei is an easy-going person. It’s fun to work with him. I strongly recommend his lessons if you are looking for a teacher with patience, expertise and passion for music.

"Fantastic all around. Deep knowledge and excellent teaching skills. He is also a truly kind and caring person too. He made it easy for me to understand concepts that were always lost on me in the past. It was the best money I have ever spent to get my skills and knowledge where I need them to be. I highly recommend Shon as both a theory and instrument (guitar/piano) instructor. Definitely the best option if you want to take you or your child's playing to the next level."

He challenges me regularly. I only wish I had found him sooner as previous instructors never had the flexibility or patience that Jimmy has.

"As Jim states on his bio, he teaches from age 8 and up. I'm one of his "up" students who's been playing guitar for a few years, but never took time to learn theory because I thought it was too confusing or difficult to learn. After being stuck in a rut for the past 30 years, I finally realized that I could be a guitar player, instead of just playing guitar, by understanding WHY I'm playing what I playing. I planned to take a few lessons to see how it would go. That was 4 months ago. Now when I pick up my guitar, I have a plan and am excited to learn more each week. Jim's approach to teaching theory makes it clear for anyone of any age or expertise. If you're young and want to learn the right way, Jim will teach you the right way. For us older folks, I found out you CAN teach an old dog new tricks... I highly recommend Jimmy!"

"I had never written music before IN MY LIFE! And I was so nervous! But Taylor was so AMAZING!! She explained the basics of music theory and harmony in a way that was easy for me to understand! And with her help, I was able to write some beautiful piano solos!! She also helped me figure out how to record them so I could record them with my friends and post my solos online. They are so good!!! :D And I am so proud of myself!!!! I highly recommend Taylor!! She was so helpful and nice and sooooo funny!! I'm so glad I got to work with her and I will definitely come back again! Thanks TayTay!!!!!"

Music Student Face-Off: Memorizers vs. Readers | Which is Better?

As you learn songs and work through your music books, do you memorize the notes? Or do you read along every time you play? In this post, music teacher Vanessa G. discusses the pros and cons to the approaches...   Imagine your teacher gives you a piece of music to study. What's your process? Do you listen to a recording, memorizing the melody and the stylistic aspects before you begin, and then as you play? Or would you sit down and sight read the notes, and perfect it from that star …

Why You Should Learn (At Least a Little) Music Theory

One of the most common weaknesses for amateur musicians is a lack of music theory knowledge. Many people assume that learning theory is difficult (it isn’t) that it has no practical purpose (it does), or even that it will actively make them worse at making music (quite the opposite). I’m here to convince you that learning a little about how music works is one of the most important skills you can develop and should absolutely be part of your daily practice routine. Here are five reasons w …

Understanding Music Theory Through Colors

Struggling to understand a music theory concept? Sometimes, all it takes is a tweak to the way material is taught for a student to really grasp it. Here, Pittsburgh voice teacher Jennifer V. reveals her unique ROYGBIV method...   Has your child ever come home in tears because they just couldn’t master a skill they learned in school? You listen, wipe their tears and tell them “Tomorrow is a new day,” and “I know you can do it!” But the next day he or she comes home upset about th …
