I'm Lucas, a professional drummer and educator in Chicago. I'm passionate about playing music and am so grateful that I get to make a living doing what I love. I played drum set with Blue Man Group, I regularly perform at the top jazz clubs in Chicago, and I've toured the country with indie bands. I'm also a high school percussion ensemble director and college drum set teacher, so I have a broad range of experiences to pull from as I craft a customized plan to help you meet your drumming goals.

I started playing the drums in my hometown of Tucson, AZ at 9 years old, following in my mom’s footsteps, who played drums at my church. It wasn’t long before I started playing in punk bands, jazz groups, and youth orchestras. I moved to the Midwest to study music at Northern Illinois University, and eventually went on to earn a master's degree at DePaul University. I have been working with students of all ages and levels for over 26 years and have learned something meaningful from each and every one them. Nothing makes me happier when I see them getting into great schools and acquiring lucrative jobs that make them happy, My students walk away with tools to not just play a musical instrument but a skill set strong enough to tackle any task.
I am equally versed in performing on and teaching drum-set (Pop, Rock, Jazz, Latin etc...), all the percussion instruments of the orchestra (ask about my state of the art recording studio where all of these instruments live), and hand drums including congas, bongos, Djembe etc... Anything you can strike scrape or shake is available for study either online or at my studios.

Find the voice of any drum and make it sing. Students of every level benefit from rhythmic breath and speaking the words of the rhythms. Beginners will find the sounds of the drum, learn the language used to explain patterns, and quickly memorize rhythms by name. Everybody learns differently, we will write, speak, feel, or clown around until you fully grasp the rhythm. Intermediate and advanced students will benefit from a variety of techniques from around the world to employ to make even familiar patterns sound fresh.

I gig, teach, and tour, full time as a drummer living in NYC. I've played drums for over 13 years and studied with numerous teachers across the country.

I perform rock, gospel, funk, jazz, country, and pop music for audiences all over and can help students identify specific, tailored, course work to help them in whatever genre.

My goal is to help students of all ages and abilities sift through the ocean of content to find the *right* challenges for them so they can play what they want to play.

The drum set is a important instrument for every musician to try out, and it can be a ton of fun! A beginning student can expect to play along to many of their favorite songs in just a few weeks. An intermediate to advanced student can expect to have a skillset that will propel them into auditions with bands in whatever genre most interests them. This would entail an understanding of polyrhythm, feel (swing vs. straight, for example), consistent tempo and the ability to replicate basic drumbeats in any genre on their instrument. Any drum beat can be simplified or made more complex to suit the students ability level, so we can delve in to whatever kind of drum-beats inspire you!
