*Disclaimer*
I'm currently not taking beginner students on voice/singing, guitar, bass, drums, piano, and ukulele. I highly recommend my studio partners Melissa though. Please check out her profile:

My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar cla

sses in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.

Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations. It's really important to know though that everyone makes their own experience. The process of learning music involves you learning as much about your own mind and body as it does any external concepts, so please keep in mind only you can move yourself forward.

I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.

I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.

Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

My studio is equipped with:

*Music Stands

*A P.A. System

*Vocal and instrument microphones

*Guitars, Basses, Ukulele, Banjos, etc

*Two guitar amps and a bass amp

*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set

*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set

*An electric piano console and Yamaha organ

*A MicroKorg Synthesizer

*A Tuba, Trombone, Cornet, Saxophone, and Flute

*An extensive physical and virtual music library

*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to

*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype

Playing a brass instrument is a physically demanding, high concentration activity that can lead to immense joy and fulfillment when approached correctly. I offer all my students practical and musical ways to master the trombone that will lead to life long enjoyment. I will equip you with fundamentals for healthy practicing and can offer lessons in several styles, including jazz, classical, and salsa. Additionally, I have helped students prepare for school, district, and regional auditions.

About Ethan

MUSIC LESSONS: Whether I am playing salsa, solo classical piano, in a jazz ensemble, or a concert band, I am ALWAYS having fun doing what I love, and I want you to have the same experience. After moving to Philadelphia ten years ago to study at Temple University, where I received my Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance, I have had many great opportunities to play all types of music with all types of people. While my passions are in jazz music, composing, and arranging, my varied experience helps me pass on the fundamentals necessary to becoming a great musician while also adapting to your goals, needs, and musical preferences.

*** Lesson Details ***
I aim for students to leave each lesson eager to practice and explore, and to come back with questions and stories of their progress. To that end, I work hard to tailor lessons to every

individuals interests and goals. Sometimes this means arranging, transcribing a recording, or even composing something new for my students. Additionally, in each lesson, I balance technical skills, ear training, and music theory to assure that each student walks away a complete musician, all structured around your musical goals.

*** Travel Equipment ***
The student must provide their own instrument and assigned method books. I will provide a music stand if necessary, and other useful instructional tools (metronome, tuner, etc.)

*** Home Studio ***
I offer lessons in my home located within walking distance of Broad Street in South Philadelphia, near the Tasker-Morris subway stop. I am equipped with a well-playing upright piano and plenty of space for musical activities. There is ample street parking in the area during the afternoon and early evening, and our living room is available to parents while students take their lesson. Students who travel to me for lessons gain all the benefits of performing on a piano, rather than an electric keyboard, and have access to many more resources that I am able to offer from my home, such as recordings and method books.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize teaching "late starters" (teens and adults new to piano) fundamentals in music in a fun and exciting way that will have you playing the music you love quickly.

For brass instruments, I am able to help brand new beginners build up their sound and facility through simple exercises that will have them astounded by their progress.

MATH: I use my years of classroom teaching and Master's degree in math education as experience to help guide you to the success you are seeking. I am able to tailor sessions to your specific needs with a few key points in mind:

- helping you catch-up, while also preparing you for what is ahead
- balancing practice with conceptual knowledge and application
- using research-based techniques to maximize your learning

I am a patient teacher, and well-equipped to explain tough topics in multiple ways. I like to use visuals and objects with simple examples to help my students really understand a concept before we try harder material. Total understanding and confidence is my goal for you.

My personal interests in mathematics are problem solving, puzzles, and combinatorics (think "How many different outfits can I make with all the clothes in my closet?"). If you're looking for an addicting puzzle to try, I suggest KenKen to all my students.

Luther stays where I’m at and then helps me go the next step. That is useful for consistent gradual progress without the frustrations of moving either too slow or too fast (I am a beginning tenor saxophone player). Nice interpersonal style, patient and easy going, while methodical.

I think Luther is great. He works with my 10-year old son on piano, singing and even trumpet and violin as needed. My son has to work hard to progress, and Luther customizes the lesson plan for him and seems to understand him well. I'm really excited about them working together.

My teaching approach will help you make your trombone sing beautiful melodies as well as execute difficult passages. Having studied with amazing trombonists such as Maciej Pietralszko and Michael Dease I have absorbed their methods and added my unique experience as a multi-genre trombonist. My approach is both broad and specific, focusing on developing great musicianship skills that go far beyond the trombone as well as honing in on the specific things that separate the average trombonist to a great one. I also craft my lessons to each student's particular needs to help them realize their full potential. Send me a message to get started!

About Alex

Im a recent graduate from Michigan State University and a current Teaching Assistant at the University of Miami. As a child I began to follow in the footsteps of my athlete parents, but I found music in middle school and fell in love with it during my time at New World School of the Arts, a highly selective performing arts high school in downtown Miami, Florida.
It was there I laid a strong technical foundation playing classical music and began cultivating my musical skills and knowledge under the direction of Jim Gasior. I was the first trombonist in the then 27-year history of New World high school to win the Concerto Competition and perform as a soloist with the orchestra. I was also on the album “Crystal Blue,” released by the New World School of the Arts Combo I in 2012.
During his time in Michigan, I was hired to play i

n the Gathering Orchestra, a residency-based big band in Detroit led by bass legend and mentor Rodney Whitaker, where I played with artists like Dee Dee Bridgewater and Savion Glover. This year I was also part of the MSU Trombone Ensemble that won the International Kai Winding Competition and was a semifinalist in the ITEC Rich Matteson Competition. I most recently traveled to Japan on a big band and educational outreach tour with the MSU Jazz Orchestra I.
Having strong mentors throughout his student life and career, I am committed to providing that same experience of having skilled and personable musicians being invested in their development; as musicians and as human beings.

Sarah
"Rachel is a fantastic teacher and tutor. Her expansive knowledge of music theory and ear training contributes to her vast musical ability. Not only is she
a great performer, but she is able to break down the music and explain it in a variety of ways in order to effectively teach students at any level. Most importantly, Rachel is an advocate for students expressing their own musical voice. She will not tell a student exactly how to play a given piece, but rather she will teach them the necessary tools for the student to play well, and allow them to explore their own musical interpretation from there.

Outside of music, Rachel is a genuine and kind-hearted person. She is understanding and empathetic, and this carries over into her teaching as well. That being said, Rachel holds herself and her students to high standards. Students will hear improvement in their tone, technique, and musicality as they work with Rachel. I give her my highest recommendation for all subjects."

"My skype lesson with Sam was one of the most insightful musical experiences I've had in regards to educating myself about the craft of trombone playing. N
ot only is his remarkable prowess at the instrument itself apparent but his knowledge of musical harmony and overall artistry allows all of his expert advice to come full circle and become even more impactful. His teaching style was incredibly supportive and effective and with clear and concise input I feel like I can very easily implement the information he gave me into my own playing. From the nuances of trombone technique to the intricacies of complex musical harmonies and progressions, Sam is more than capable of instructing students of all ages and skill levels. I would absolutely recommend Sam to anybody who wants to study music/trombone seriously or even is just getting started and wants to build a strong foundation. I can't wait until my next online lesson!"
