I am a fun, enthusiastic teacher who cares deeply about her students and their growth as musicians and people. I believe teaching works best when students are relaxed, having fun, and are actively engaged in the learning process. It is also important that you practice what we work on during lessons at home if you wish to see real progress. ***Lesson Details and Recommendations***

Singing voice: I teach classical vocal technique with an emphasis on the body-mind connection. Through the course of my training, I have studied the Alexander Technique, which is a method that has been used by actors, musicians, and athletes to find optimal body-mind coordination to achieve better results. The voice is the only instrument that is literally your body, so we will be using these tools to improve posture, breathing, and resonance. By learning a healthy vocal technique, you can expect improved tone quality, an expanded vocal and dynamic range, greater resonance, increased agility, improved diction, and more. Healthy vocal technique can be applied to any genre, and I teach students who are studying a wide variety of music, but classical and musical theater repertoire is my area of expertise.

Speaking voice: I have had great success helping students who come to me for help with their speaking voices. As the speaking voice and singing voice use the same set of muscles, the same set of functional principles apply. I work with students to improve their posture, breathing, and breath support when speaking, as well as clear diction, better pacing, and conveying emotion and meaning. These tools also lead to increased confidence when speaking.

Piano: I am also an established piano teacher and have had much success teaching beginning and intermediate students from ages 4 to 91 in various styles of music. I believe it is important for students to learn how to read and interpret written music as well as understand the structure behind it, so in addition to learning musical basics, I incorporate music theory into lessons. I encourage my piano students to learn how to read lead sheets and create chord accompaniments as well, which opens the door for comfortably playing in all sorts of styles sooner than would be possible by classical approaches alone. I also work on improvisation and songwriting with my piano students, if desired.

***Lesson Recommendations***
I offer lessons in 30, 45, and 60 minute increments. These are the *minimum* lesson lengths recommended. Longer lessons are more beneficial, except in the case of children with smaller attention spans. A 60 minute lesson is the best choice for serious students (teenagers or adults).

Voice:
Ages <12 years: 30 minutes
Ages 12 and up: 45 minutes

Piano:
Ages <7 years: 30 minutes
Ages 7 and up: 45 minutes

Combination Lesson:
Ages <12 years: 45 minutes
Ages 12 and up: 60 minutes

*Please note: I do not reserve regular lesson times in my schedule for students who cannot commit to weekly lessons. With students who wish to take less frequent lessons, I recommend the flex plan, with lessons to be scheduled as we go at our mutual convenience.

***Educational Background***
Elizabeth holds an M.M. in vocal performance from West Virginia University, where she was featured in numerous WVU Opera Theatre productions and was the soprano soloist with WVU Choirs in Faure's Requiem and Handel's Lord Nelson Mass. While at WVU, Elizabeth resumed taking lessons at the piano, which she had previously studied for many years, and exceeded the piano proficiency level required by the university. She also holds a B.A. in music and international studies from Emory University. Elizabeth has studied and performed internationally, both at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, where she was the recipient of the Lemmonds Scholarship, and at the Bel Canto program in conjunction with L'Arena di Verona opera company in Verona, Italy.

As a graduate assistant at WVU, Elizabeth taught voice lessons to music education and performance majors as well as a course on vocal pedagogy. After graduating, she served as adjunct faculty, in which capacity she taught vocal repertoire and opera theater. She has maintained a private studio since 2005, in which she instructs students in voice and piano. She has also held past teaching positions with the Meridee Winters School of Music and Woodland Country Day School.

Elizabeth was most recently seen as Joanie in The Full Monty at Candlelight Theatre in Delaware. Other recent performances include June in Musical of Musicals: The Musical and Peaches/ Baby Jane in Jerry Springer: The Opera with Bootless Stageworks in Wilmington, DE, solo performances with the New Voices Cabaret at the Society Hill Playhouse in Center City, and Woman 2 in My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra with Mainstage Center for the Arts in Blackwood, NJ. She has performed numerous leading roles with Philadelphia area Gilbert and Sullivan companies, most notably appearing as Angelina in Trial by Jury with The Savoy Company, winning Best American Production at the 2011 International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. Her G &S performance credits include the roles of Patience (Patience), Yum-Yum (The Mikado), Rose Maybud (Ruddigore), Phyllis (Iolanthe), and Fiammetta (Gondoliers). Additionally, she has pioneered roles in new operas, including Gwendolyn in The Crowded House at the 2010 Philly Fringe Festival and Zelda in Black Horses with OperaDelaware at the 2009 Wilmington Fringe Festival.

Elizabeth has been great with my daughter. She makes vocal lessons fun! Elizabeth is always very supportive and give kudos for her efforts which builds up my daughter's confidence. This is a great approach as it often opens up the child's desire to push themselves and solidifies that it is ok to make mistakes. We are very fortunate to have found Elizabeth.

Lessons consist of learning a solid vocal technique, and learning Broadway repertoire. Also, performing skills will be incorporated, so that the singer feels comfortable acting the song as well. I strongly believe that singers must be actors, and that is what makes us different from instrumentalists. It is also a lot of fun! For children or adults who are willing, I also teach sight singing and spend some of the lessons time learning some basic reading skills.

Sandra began her training at the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. She is a two time recipient of the Mario Lanza Award, and holds a B.M. degree in opera from the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts. She studied acting at both the Wilma and Walnut Theaters in Philadelphia. In New York, she studied Shakespeare at the HB Studios, and received on-camera training at the Weisst- Barron Commercial School. Sandra is a member of Actor's Equity.

Sandra was engaged for seven years at Theater des Westens in Berlin, Germany, where she performed extensively in Musicals and Operetta. She also toured throughout Germany with the ensemble "Operetten Express". In the U.S., Sandra has toured nationally with "Man of La Mancha" and "Carousel", and has performed leading roles in many regional theaters. She also performed in the Off-Broadway
Musical "Mamaleh". Sandra has performed in over fifty productions of Musicals, Operetta, and Opera. Some of her favorite roles include: Aldonza (Man of La Mancha), Desiree (A Little Night Music), Marguerite (The Scarlet Pimpernel), Antonia (The Tales of Hoffmann), and Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi).

Sandra is teaching my nine year old grandson. From day one he came back from his lessons thrilled to be singing. In addition, Sandra is teaching him to read music. At nine years old he is like a sponge absorbing all of this and Sandra is doing a great job providing lessons and challenges.

About me!

I am a Westminster Choir College '11 Alum  who graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts in Music, summa cum laude. I also have my master's degree in music therapy from Drexel University. I am also a Member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and a  Board Certified Music Therapist. During my time at school I performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kimmel Center, and did music therapy work with older adults, as well as disadvantaged children and parents.

I also have my own parent/child music class I host every Thursday September-May. It's never to early to start a music education!

I have been teaching for over four years and now have a studio of more than 70 happy students. Teaching music is my passion, and I love seeing students grow!

I often draw upon my experience from my master's degree in music therapy, which taught me that music can have a profound effect on the human brain and upon cognitive development.  My skills as a music therapist allow me to better understand a student's cognitive strengths and areas for improvement, and to develop individualized teaching strategies which utilize student strengths.

Although I teach the same fundamental technique for all kinds of singing, I am well versed in the unique stylistic needs of Broadway singing. As a college student in a women's chorus, I have already learned how to sing chorus-style at school. This summer I took lessons with Emily in order to gain technique and confidence in more contemporary singing. In addition to providing a flexible schedule and an accommodating environment in her home, Emily worked with my specific needs and taught me a lot in a short amount of time. She does a great job of explaining how sound resonates within your mouth and articulating how to "tune your instrument" so that your voice travels freely and sounds strong. Three months ago I had no idea how to belt, and now I have a pretty solid understanding of how it works. If you are practicing a specific song, Emily can communicate the specific techniques used by the artist, as well as help you decide what works well for your own voice. I couldn't imagine a better experience this summer than learning from Emily.

I'd never taken vocal lessons before I met Emily so I had no idea what to expect.
My boyfriend starting working with her on his voice and vocal skills for about a year, and I noticed very significant changes in his voice fairly quickly. He sounded better every week, so I decided to start taking lessons as well.
I've always enjoyed singing, and used to sing socially when I was younger, but my job schedule really didn't allow for that anymore. To invest time and energy into myself, I decided to start singing again, and Emily is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! She is very patient, and teaches a great technique - she explains everything is very tangible terms. She is also very intuitive and knows when you need a little push to move past any insecurities or fears that you may not hit a note. To round the experience out, she is a very fun person! After 7 lessons with her, I can very honestly say that I can sing much more freely and always look forward to my next lesson.
I cannot sing her praises enough, and highly recommend you schedule a lesson with her.

Hello! My name is Charlea Lyn, and I want to begin by thanking you for taking a look at my profile. It has always been one of my firm beliefs that anyone can sing as singing can be defined by “uttering words or sounds in succession with musical modulations of the voice.” Therefore, with this mentality in mind I feel as though it is not a job, but more a privilege to be able to teach people to sing.

My parents say I started singing before I could talk, however, I seriously started taking lessons when I was 14. Over the course of my lessons, I fell in love with opera, and decided that was what I wanted to pursue as a career path. That decision led me to SUNY Fredonia, where I received my BM in Music Education and Vocal Performance, and later to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where I received my MM in Vocal Performance in May
'13 under the tutelage of Catherine Cook.

One of the most important things that I have learned thus far, is that singing is a truly expressive art form that requires hard work, diligence, and commitment. It is my goal to bring each of my students the farthest I can in healthily developing their technique as well as work on the emotional portrayal and fundamental building blocks of music. Although I teach each student specific to his or her individual needs and desires, my lessons usually consist of three parts - technique exercises, sight singing, and repertoire. Furthermore, other things that stay consistent are a comfortable and safe environment for the student, my undivided attention, all the information that I have to share with others, and most importantly FUN!

Although it is my personal decision to pursue opera and classical music, I have experience in musical theatre and am comfortable teaching a variety of genres. I truly believe that although each genre is different, the foundation and principles of healthy singing are the same.

Not every teacher is right for every student. However, I do my best to give all my students lessons in a comfortable and productive learning environment. I had a great first lesson with Charlea. She's an excellent teacher who focuses on her students' particular needs and moves at an appropriate pace. The lesson was all work and no filler, and I already made more progress than I had with hours of prior lessons and self-directed research.

A Grammy award winning singer, Colleen has been teaching voice for over 10 years. She utilizes classical technique to train artists who perform both classical and commercial styles of music, including musical theater, R&B, pop, gospel, rock, alternative, country, musical theater and jazz.

She has been trained in contemporary technique by Seth Riggs, vocal coach to Michael Jackson; as well as Linda Septien, vocal coach to broadway greats like Sutton Foster, Audra McDonald, Andrew Rannells and Norm Lewis. She's taught top pop stars Beyonce, Jessica and Ashlee Simpson, Demi Levato, Ryan Cabrera, Kidz Bop Kids, Miley Cyrus and many many more top stars. Colleen has been trained in classical technique by Sherri Greenawald, director of the Grammy winning San Francisco Opera’s Merola program.

Colleen is a Grammy award winning recording artist and has been teaching music to ages 6 and up for 10 years.. She also performs around the bay area. She currently teaches music in Redwood City for KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program), a national organization of charter schools known for their rigorous high standards. Colleen Teaches out of her home in downtown San Jose as well as online through Skype and FaceTime.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Colleen has taught students of all ages and abilities. While teaching elementary school, she led over 250 singers in school wide performances. While teaching middle school, her four choirs won multiple awards and gained a reputation for giving top quality performances. While teaching high school she led a district wide masterwork performance that featured singers from three high school choirs, accompa
nied by a full orchestra. Her top high school choirs toured California and won best overall at the California Music Educators conference. Her adult students have gone on to great heights, winning recording contracts, lead roles and awards. Her students have won movie rolls, singing competitions and some have even become YouTube viral sensations.

TEACHING METHODS:

Classical technique: Colleen has studied classical technique under Sherri Greenawald, the Grammy winning Artistic Director of the San Francisco Opera.

Contemporary technique: Colleen has studied with some of the top voice teachers in the music industry. She studies directly from Linda Septien, a legend in the music industry. Linda is ranked as one of the top 5 talent coaches in the world. Some of Linda's students include: Beyonce, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Ryan Cabrera and Hunter Parish and more. She is an adviser for American Idol, The Voice and America's Got Talent. Colleen continues to pass on Linda's stellar methods to her students.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Voice lessons consist of a tailored curriculum created specifically for each student, targeting areas that will have the most impact for each individual artist. Learn to expand your range, using your diaphragm properly; learn scatting, breathing techniques, belt, mixed voice and head voice. Learn how to add texture and style to your performance.
Great entertaining is also about presentation, visual energy and staging. Learn how to be an all around entertainer through timed movement, staging and story telling.

She made us feel 100% comfortable taking our daughter to her first lesson . I definitely recommend her if anyone it's looking for someone. I drove almost 1 hr to her spot but well worth it .

My son is 9 and Colleen has been seeing him once a week. She has him on a program where he sings everyday with homework. She has a professional recording studio in her home and records exercises that she sends my son home with. She is a very good teacher. She is clear and kind and always has something new to do.

Excellent instructor for my 8 year old son. Nani is very encouraging and assigns tasks and activities that keeps him engaged and interested in learning and playing more. She is very knowledgeable and will design the appropriate lesson plan based on your or your child's abilities.

I absolutely recommend Nani and will definitely take her lessons again! I was working on a demo for the 2016 Chinese Voice competition so I figured to get some professional help. Nani turned out to be the perfect teacher for this! She is a professional opera singer and very passionate about singing. She is very friendly and has a great sense of humor. Her teaching methodology is very scientific, and she taught me techniques that I can apply immediately, and I was able to solve the two biggest struggles in singing after 2 lessons with her. I'm looking forward to improve my singing by taking more Nani's lessons in the future! =D

I've been teaching lessons for about five years now. I have a bachelor's degree in music. My minor was education studies, which equipped me to teach in non-traditional settings such as private lessons and even work in music ministry leading others.
