About Alexander
My name is Alex, and my passion is teaching music. I offer clients a unique learning experience with customized lesson plans and personalized attention to fit your exact goals and needs. These aren’t just words to me…they are a commitment I make to everyone that I have the pleasure of working with.

Here’s who I am…

I earned a Bachelor's of Music from Berklee College of Music where I studied Bass Performance and Composition. I have years of experience playing upright and electric bass in many styles such as rock, jazz, orchestral, and big band. I’ve studied a variety of instruments over the last 20 years including guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, and piano.

Here’s what I can do for you…

I will give you my full attention and unyielding patience with each and every lesson. Together we will explore the principals of music that
will enable you to learn to play in any style you choose to study. Ultimately my job is not to teach you to play, but to show you how to teach yourself. I will arm you with a thorough understanding of technique and theory.

I love working with kids and adults. I love brand new players with no experience as well as seasoned players who just want to fill in some gaps in their knowledge. Whatever your age, and wherever you’re at with your playing, I hope you will give me the chance to help you have more fun and confidence in music.

Every player I work with gets access to a personal online Lesson Journal where you can see my notes from our lessons, do homework from your “Stuff to work on” lists, and access my entire digital library! Every lesson is designed just for you.

Let’s get started…

You can take lessons at my studio, in your home, or online via Skype.

For lessons in my studio, I can provide instruments and amplifiers for both of us.

There is ample seating for parents to sit in on lessons. Parking is available in the driveway.

You’re going to love your lessons!
-Alex

Using your favorite bass lines, we will explore music theory on the bass. Learn to create your own bass part for songs. Be able to demonstrate proper technique and tonal production on the instrument. Learn musical vocabulary and alternate techniques necessary to perform songs on the bass.

About Michael
Michael C. was eleven years old when he began to play the electric bass guitar. He decided to get an electric bass because it was the one instrument needed to start a band among his friends. In addition to playing the electric bass, Michael enjoyed time practicing on the guitar and piano in high school. Transferring the knowledge and finger technique to the guitar came easy because of the similarities between guitar and the bass. And growing up with an upright piano in the house always lead to tinkering and eventually became a proficiency after college. In 1996 Michael enrolled at the the Philadelphia University of the Arts. He was awarded a presidential merit scholarship and a university grant based on his entrance audition. During his studies Michael was recruited for a student ensemble also know as Metagroove. During this time Michael
had shared stages with guitarist John Scofield, Singer Ike Willis (Frank Zappa Band), Medeski Martin and Wood and The Disco Biscuits among countless others.

Michael has completed a Master of Arts in music education as well as Bachelor of Music in bass performance. Michael is qualified to teach on bass, upright bass, guitar, drums, piano, voice and a rare instrument called steel pan (steel drum) among others. Michael performs as a freelance musician. He can be found performing regularly at private parties and events around the greater Philadelphia area. He has performed playing most styles and genres of music. Among these styles are Pop, R & B, Blues, Hip Hop, Jazz, Calypso, Flamenco, Latin, Pop, Musical Theater and Rock & Roll.

Michael is a trained professional and prefers to cater his lessons to the individual need of each student. He believes that each student is unique and will encounter challenges in their own manner. Michael likes to supplement his lessons using musical interests of the student. C. has been known to arrange popular pieces for recital performances for his students. Some of the pieces he has arranged for his students include Something in the Way She Moves (Beetles), Long distance Run Around (The Who), Iron Man (Black Sabbath), That' €™s What Makes You Beautiful (One Direction), Hall of Fame (The Script) among many more. Michael encourages his students to use the music they love to challenge their ability and cognitive processes. Michael has the experience and training required to inspire and motivate you to become successful not only in music but in your daily endeavors.

*** Lesson Details ***
Michael has over twelve years experience teaching music and chooses to cater his lessons to the goals of his clients. He does not follow a set curriculum because different students tend to have different goals and expectations.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Logic Pro X, Reason, Fast Track pro audio, Double Bass, Piano, Rhodes Electric Piano, Acoustic guitar, Electric Guitar, Flute, Sax, Clarinet, trumpet, Electric basses, Steel Pans (drums), etc.

Audio recordings of each lesson are free of charge and available upon request. C. is capable of creating demos and audio recordings as well as audio production of original material.

Explore any and all areas of upright bass performance. Jazz, walking bass lines, orchestral playing (I teach both German bow and French bow). Focus on developing strong technique and good intonation, which is the basis of playing for all styles of music.

About Tim
I earned my master’s degree in jazz studies from The University of the Arts. As adjunct professor of music at Lebanon Valley College, I teach double bass, bass guitar, jazz improvisation, and directs small-group jazz combos. Working with students of all ages, I also teach workshops, clinics, and master classes at high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools in Pennsylvania and Maryland, as well as keeping a private teaching studio out of my Bucks County home.

Lessons are available on upright bass, electric bass, improvisation, music theory, and ear training at all ability levels and all ages, from absolute beginners to high school students preparing for college auditions to adults. Some of my students have been accepted to various regional orchestras and jazz bands, and I'm very proud of their hard work.

While having an outl
ined curriculum to develop my students’ technique, reading, and knowledge of theory, I cater to their interests by showing them how to apply what the are learning to the music that they already know and love.

Students can expect a teacher that addresses every single aspect of learning orchestral upright bass: from honing bow technique, to left-hand formation and fingering choices, to reading musical notation, interpreting music and learning rhythm.

My goal is to help students develop a technical foundation on the bass for playing just about any kind of music that they are interested in, and to support students with practicing tips for areas in their playing where they want to improve. My specialty is symphony orchestra training, so I primarily use the Essential Elements for Strings books at the beginning, and then later as students make progress, I begin to introduce standard orchestral repertoire, sonatas, and concertos written for the bass. I have been teaching since August 2016 and so far I have helped students get into All-States, Districts/Regional festivals, youth orchestra programs, and music degree programs at colleges. I feel that the reason why my students succeed is ...

About Darren
Darren is one of the leading private teachers for double bass lessons in Greater Boston and specializes in audition preparation for music festivals, colleges, and youth orchestra programs.

Darren focuses on improving his students' playing ability by focusing on their technique, phrasing, tone, and by providing insight on the way they approach practicing.

He is currently a substitute bassist for the Boston Lyric Opera. He has also performed in several professional orchestras across Connecticut including the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra, the New Britain Symphony Orchestra, and the Wallingford Symphony Orchestra.

Darren has been invited to coach chamber ensembles at the Northeast Massachusetts Youth Orchestra and the Rivers School Conservatory. While studying with Darren, his students' achievements have included performing in the
MMEA All-States Festival, the MMEA Northeast Senior District Festival, the Northeast Massachusetts Youth Orchestra, and the CJMEA Elementary Honors Orchestra (in New Jersey via online lessons).

Darren studied privately with world-renowned double bass musicians including Lawrence Wolfe, assistant principal bass of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Robert Black, founding member of the New York City-based contemporary ensemble, Bang On A Can.

He writes articles and publishes his own insightful articles related to practicing the double bass.

As an experienced teacher with a Master's Degree in Bass Performance, you can expect instruction in either French or German bow, left hand technique, and musical concepts that apply to many different styles of music. Additionally, I have studied jazz and can help with sound production within that genre.

About Sara
Sara Neilson grew up in Alexandria VA, and began her musical career as a violinist. Though she always wanted to play music for a living, it wasn’t until college that she fell in love with the bass and decided to pursue it professionally. After earning degrees in both Music Education and Music Performance, she received a master's degree in Bass Performance from DePaul University, where she was runner up in the Concerto Competition. Since graduating, she has taught double bass in a variety of settings around Chicago. Her students have performed at the Obama Foundation, the Aspen Music Festival, and Carnegie Hall. She had performed at the Chautauqua Institute, Eastern Music Festival and Brevard Music Festival and has appeared locally with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, the Elgin Symphony Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Sara has a great eye for detail, and has various ways of articulating what she either sees or hears in a person's playing. She does well in meeting the student where they are in order to encourage them along the way, while maintaining the teacher student relationship, something not easily done. Her experience, willingness to help and patience all make her a very excellent instructor in my opinion!

Upright bass is a dangerous instrument to self-teach! I would provide gentle instruction with a guiding hand towards technique, especially the problem of the bow hand. Details regarding instrument care and posture are especially important for this instrument, and I will help you every step of the way!

About Ari
My name is Ari Fiekowsky, I'm 22 years old.

Currently I'm studying at Kean University, for a degree in Music Education K-12 with Teacher Certification.

I am a 3.8 GPA student who has been studying cello since I was 8 and piano since I was 3, and the other strings instruments since I was 15. I have always been good at all subjects, but have had a love for music. Music can benefit the brain in incredible ways, especially for children! Please ask me about these benefits and I can give you supportive academic research.

I have a permissive teaching style that is sensitive to developmental disability and mental illness, but also can be quite harrowing and strict if you have the desire to truly become a great musician. I practice all my instruments daily--I expect my students to do the same. :)

My specialties are strings, music the
ory, and piano. I'm very energetic and expect genuine effort from all my students. I try to make things fun, so I hope you try too!

Maintaining student interest and finding creative ways to inspire students, Gwenyth aims to use culturally relevant pedagogy to inspire her students and center learning on their musical interests. During lessons, Gwenyth designs her lessons to promote creativity while providing the necessary skills and foundation to find success on the student’s chosen instrument and study of music.

About Gwenyth
Growing up in the Hudson Valley of New York, I have been surrounded by a vast amount of music and collections of artifacts from Broadway to Woodstock. After 13 years of training in jazz and classical saxophone, I began teaching strings. I continued to explore music at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University in Montreal. I completed a rigorous two-degree, five-year program in Music and Education. My training includes studies in early childhood music education, Orff, Kodaly, Woodwinds, Brass, Strings, Percussion and Tabla. While completing my academics on schedule, I participated in multiple performing groups, represented the Schulich School of Music in student government for two years and acted as a communication and publicity agent for the I Medici Orchestra di McGill. During my time in Montreal, I was offered a teaching positio
n by the former Quebec Music Educator Association president Theodora Stathopoulos. I am now formally known as one of the founding tutors of the Viva! Sistema program in Montreal. The El Sistema concept, which originated in Venezuela but has proliferated across the world, emphasizes the ensemble, the process of learning, develops a spirit of cooperation and discipline, and focuses on social change through music. I mirror this part of spirit of cooperation and learning through a blend of techniques I leaned at Viva! Sistema with the education I received from McGill and graduate level education at Teachers College, Columbia University.

I worked in New York City public schools as an orchestra and elementary general music teacher while attending Columbia University this past year. I would use culturally relevant pedagogy to inspire students and center their learning on their musical interests and creativity. This would be showcased with concerts and social events. I would also emphasize teaching them the necessary skills to find success in and out of the classroom. They have applied mathematics to music theory, explored music in the context of history and have used music as a creative outlet by using their voice, instruments or movement. I encourage all my students to explore many genres of music and I aim to foster a community in which students help each other grow.
