My doctorate is in music and I have experience teaching music at multiple universities, as a public schools teacher, and as a private instructor. I've performed electric and acoustic guitar in rock bands, pop bands, and jazz combos. I have experience teaching guitar from age 10 through college level. Dr. Carl Spaeth taught at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical beginning August 2017. His duties included graduate saxophone lessons, graduate music theory review, graduate saxophone pedagogy, and saxophone studio class.
Prior to working at OSU, Spaeth was Instructor of Jazz and Saxophone at South Dakota State University from 2014-2017. His responsibilities included directing the annual SDSU/Brookings Optim
Spaeth completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in saxophone performance at the University of Kansas in 2014, and his Master of Music Pedagogy and Performance from Oklahoma State University in 2011. He graduated from Harrah High School in 2002, earned his Bachelor of Music Education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 2008, and was a 5th-12th grade Head Band Director at Fairview Public schools. He is currently a member of the North American Saxophone Alliance, the Jazz Education Network, Music Teachers National Association, National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, and an Honorary Member of Tau Beta Sigma. He has held previous memberships with Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association.
While at KU, Spaeth was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Spaeth was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Spaeth has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Spaeth went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.
While at OSU, Spaeth was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Spaeth was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Spaeth's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen, Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.
While at SWOSU, Spaeth performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr., Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.
Spaeth's primary saxophone instructors have been Vince Gnojek, Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert, Dr. Ann Bradfield, Dr. Keith Talley, and William Rodney Hull. He has had additional instruction in lessons and masterclasses from Gary Foster, Dr. Joseph Murphy, Dr. Michael Cox, Bob Sheppard, Johnny Salinas, Dr. Kimberly Goddard Loeffert, Dr. Geoffrey Deibel, Dr. Jonathan Nichol, Dr. Griffin Campbell, Dr. James Laughlin, and Dr. David Dees. Spaeth's jazz directors have included Dan Gailey, Bob McCurdy, Dr. Jonathan Martin, Dr. Keith Talley, and Dr. Terry Segress.
Spaeth enjoys recording several instruments in his home studio and composing new music. His compositions that have been performed include his big band arrangement of Cat Battles by Joshua Redman, September in the Refrain (alto saxophone and electronics), Funk-o-matic (jazz combo), Smooth (jazz combo), and The Deadline Arrives at Dawn (alto saxophone and electronics). As an advocate of new music involving the saxophone, he has participated in a commissioning consortium for Alone Together by composer David MacDonald through Kick Starter. In 2013, Spaeth performed the premier of Cuento #3 by Nelson Ramirez Diaz. During summer of 2014, he recorded selections from Dr. John Walker's "The Alto Saxophone in the Attic," published by Carl Fischer. At the 10th Annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival in 2015, Spaeth directed SDSU Jazz Ensemble I's premier of Dog, Tired by David von Kampen.
Dr. Spaeth is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist. He hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 (ND, SD, NE, MN, IA) Conference at South Dakota State University on March 17-18, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Spaeth performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Spaeth performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale. In April 2017, Spaeth performed solo tenor saxophone and orchestral clarinet in Ethan Bortnick's national PBS Special called "Generations of Music," which featured special guest, Peter Yarrow, from Peter, Paul and Mary.

Teaching for over 24 years; owner of my own music store/studio for past 14 years.
Teaching beginner - advanced from age 5 to 70+.
I typically use the 21st Century Guitar method book with audio CD and I supplement the text with write-ins or handouts/worksheets as applied to the student's needs and questions. I try to get students playing chords as soon as possible; usually stating with open position power-chords and one or two finger open position chords.
I do flatpicking and fingerstyle ( with or without picks) and encourage students to try both. I try to get the student to sing and play - don't be bashful...I try to have fun with students.
I will help you learn to create chord progressions and write a chord chart and maybe a melody for your first songwriting experience. Usually we will do this using power -chords for beginners or what ever chords the student can handle.
I can train you how to learn songs by ear from recordings once you have some basic abilities.

She was awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where she received a dual Bachelor of Music degree in Music Therapy and Vocal Performance (Class of 2003). It was through her service as a music therapist, Millieu (residential) counselor and music teacher in the Boston City Public Schools/Greater Boston Metropolitan Area, that she began to feel the call toward a greater understanding of the gravity and role of the socio-emotional needs of students (and their families/villages) in urban settings. This call brought her to Baltimore, MD where she enrolled in the Pastoral Counseling Masters of Science program at Loyola University. In addition to her studies, she currently teaches Elementary and Middle School choir/ Musicianship teacher in the Baltimore City Public Schools through the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's OrchKids Program. She also serves as Minister Of Music and Arts at two local churches.

Playing and teaching the guitar is my life's biggest passion. I began playing guitar in highschool in a rock band, and fell in love with the instrument. Since then I decided to major in music, became obsessed with classical guitar, and now I'm teaching classical guitar at UNLV while pursuing a doctorate of music there.
I teach all styles though, and I aim to help my students reach whatever goals with music they may have. I also have a good knowledge of music theory, something that's helpful in all musical endeavors. I'm also very good for beginners, as I can ensure no technical bad habits are developed.
I aim to give my students the skills to pursue whatever they would like on the guitar. I'm a professional classical guitarist, but I got my start playing rock and roll and am comfortable teaching a variety of genres if the student wants to learn a specific style. I feel I am a great teacher for total beginners as well, I make sure the student has a rounded approach and avoids developing bad habits.

The thing that makes Trevor stand out to me is that he took the time to get to know what I wanted to learn and to figure out how I like to learn. He comes prepared to the lessons with material, answers any questions I have during the week by email and has worked with me to develop a specific education plan to meet my goals.
I suggest taking a trial lesson with this guy to see if you're on the same page. I am definitely not going anywhere else while I live in Austin.

I have been playing and studying music for 30 years and performing for 20 years. I teach a variety of styles including rock/pop, jazz, country, and classical, as well as how to compose and improvise in a variety of settings. I can show you the in's and out's of the equipment used with electric guitars including amplifiers and effects, as well as teaching instrument maintenance and modifications. My teaching approach revolves around getting new students to make music as soon as possible, even with the most basic skills, to build confidence and ensure a continued interest in learning. I emphasize the internalization of the physical aspects of playing through repetition and progressive exercises customized to the individual.

My lessons are always customized towards the individual, but stress the ability to make music even with very little technique. Building on simple riffs, easy chord changes, and practicing slowly to instill confidence and keep students interested. I often incorporate popular Beatles or Taylor Swift songs to teach chord changes and song form. Working on reading music for piano students and tablature for guitar as well as lead sheets for both. I can also show you how to interpret "cheat sheets," those lyrics with the chords above them that you get from the internet, that are always a little bit wrong.
Having finally reached a place where technique is no longer a hurdle to making music is a reward equal to the amount of time and effort that was required to reach this level of proficiency. I find great joy in showing people of all ages that music can be life-enriching, expanding one’s appreciation of the arts, providing opportunities for new friendships, and creating a sense of accomplishment with every new song learned or skill acquired on a musical instrument.

I have been playing and recording professionally for 30+ years, to include 21+ years in the US Navy Music Program/Navy Band where I performed in ~60 countries world wide. I hold a bachelor's and master's degree in Music Theory/Composition and Jazz Studies, and I studied with jazz guitar legend Jimmy Bruno. I have taught guitar privately, at the community college level, and have five years experience teaching guitar, jazz improvisation, jazz combos, contemporary music ensemble (rock/top 40), and big band jazz ensembles at the Armed Forces School of Music and Naval School of Music. I structure lessons based on what your needs are as a student, and continually adjust the pace of instruction and new material to help you progress quickly without becoming overwhelmed. I like to focus on studying and playing songs that you want to learn, in whatever style you choose. I also use a number of books for different exercises that I think will be useful in achieving your goals. When you are ready, you can practice performance by recording songs at my studio.
I will help you find your individual musical style through exploring the things you want to learn, and I always invite you to ask why I am teaching you a specific concept. My lessons will always be pointed toward reaching your specific goals so you can become the musician you want to be.
Music seems like it has always been apart of my life. From an early age in elementary school I tried several instruments, from horns and wind instruments to drums. I finally landed on guitar when I turned 9 years old and never turned back. My first experience teaching was in middle school, where I wanted to be in a band but no one else in the class knew how to play guitar or drums. So I decided to teach 3 of my friends how to play guitar, bass and drums to start my first band. I’ve been playing and teaching
I teach out of my home recording studio, at the student’s home, or online. I use the recording studio for lessons, creating backing tracks for the students to play along to or solo over. I also record some of the exercises and play them back for students so they can hear for themselves when I explain a concept or correct an error.
My goal for lessons: To help my students achieve their musical goals as fast as possible. To develop their own style, identify and eliminate bad habits, and encourage good ones. In less than 6 months the student will be able to play simple songs, know the theory behind the chords, read the chords charts, and begin to read sheet music.
For intermediate lessons, I like to focus on more in depth looks at theory, and the application of theory. I enjoy analyzing songs with students and picking apart what makes them great. I also, when teaching in my studio, like to spend time recording with the students, creating original songs, and recreating popular songs.
A typical lesson: 10-15 minutes of warm up and review, 10-15 minutes of new material, theory, or song study. Longer lessons include more playing time, and more time to explore questions. I encourage my students not to let the learning stop when the lessons stop, but to look up articles and watch as many videos as they can, and bring lots of questions to every lesson.

Over the last few lessons, he's gotten me back into harmonic analysis (a skill that I tucked away after stopping my music theory studies ages ago). Our lessons are a mixture of looking at the structure of existing pieces, as well as working on my own songwriting. He's been immensely helpful in understanding how the structure of piece, as well as its chords and melodies, contribute to its overall sound. This has helped my songwriting immensely, as I feel that I am no longer wandering around aimlessly -- rather, I at least have a rough sense of direction in terms of where I would like a piece of music to go. Fully getting there is another story, but I'm sure that will come with practice.
In addition to being a good instructor, Stephen is a good dude with a great attitude. He's always patient and positive and encourages learning through experimentation. I highly recommend him.

I have been an active performing musician in Pittsburgh for over ten years now. I am extremely versatile and have played in many varying styles of bands. I am not strict on a specific way to learn the different aspects of playing the guitar. There are many ways to approach the proper way to play whatever songs or styles you gravitate towards. I am well versed in blues, rock, metal, jazz, country, and folk styles.
