Hello future viola students -- welcome!!

In addition to playing violin, I've also played viola in duets, trios, and string quartets, and is another beautiful instrument to learn.

My approach includes providing the student with a good foundation of both left and right hand technique using a combination of method books which reinforce note-reading and proper posture for the first year. We then start adding solo pieces from the Classical repertoire and supplement those with modern pieces from Pop, Latin, Jazz, or any other style the student would like to learn.

Students always get a well-rounded education with me on the string instruments I teach AND are prepared to play either alone, or in groups when the opportunity presents itself.

Happy Practicing!

About Nicolas
Hello there, future string players and welcome to my profile!!

I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and raised in Miami, FL. I started my musical career at the age of 8, singing in chorus, playing the recorder, and shortly afterwards moving to the guitar, and the violin.

When I was 15, I was nominated for a James L. Knight Award in Music, and I performed as a violin soloist with the Miami Beach Symphony Orchestra, and the Greater Miami Youth Symphony playing Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major. One of my most memorable experiences when I was a kid! In high school, I formed my own string quartet and we would perform all over the South Florida community especially at hospitals and for the elderly. At 16 years old, I was also given an internship with the New World Symphony, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas, for about 2
years. During this time, I was able to take lessons from master violinists such as Marc Thayer and Glen Cherry. During this time, I was given the opportunity to perform with the New World Symphony at 17 years old for pops concert conducted and performed by Chuck Mangione in El Doral, FL.

I later on accepted a scholarship for violin performance at the University of Miami for my Bachelor of Music, and earned my Master of Music from Florida State University. I also taught string orchestras for 10 years at Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor K-8 Center, South Florida Youth Symphony as conductor (and now composer!), and conductor of the Greater Miami Youth Symphony. I was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Alhambra Orchestra for two seasons under the guidance of my high school orchestra teacher, Mr. Reginald Nicholson (1947-2011). It was here where I was able to work on my compositions, orchestrations, and conduct a fine group of musicians.

I now live in sunny Los Angeles, in the Sherman Oaks area, and I'm loving the new change. I am eager to share my knowledge with new students on various subjects such as learning a string instrument to learning a different language. Please feel free to ask me any questions.

I am looking forward to getting to know you and your goals for learning!

LESSON DETAILS
I have been teaching music as an adult, certified teacher since I was in college, but have done teaching as early as 15 years old.

I will help you create a fantastic technical base so you will be able to play with ease as your skill level develops, all while keeping the lessons fun and engaging.

MUSIC STUDIO
Piano, Violin, Guitar, Music Stand, General Teaching Aids, Recording Equipment.

TRAVEL EQUIPMENT
I can provide a music stand and basic materials but the student is expected to have their own instruments and to buy the music I recommend. I can recommend various vendors/shops where you can buy the ideal instrument for your lessons.

EXPERTISE
I am classically-trained musician that also specializes in Tango performance, Latin/Jazz, Rock, and a variety of other styles. I believe that training in the classical aesthetic will create a firm, solid foundation to crossover into other areas listed above. With a good dose of technical exercises, scales, and a variety of repertoire, my students always turn out well-rounded, ready to tackle almost any kind of music they wish to learn.

Thank you for stopping by and let me know what you would like to learn!

As a 30-something adult beginner, I chose Nick as my teacher for his experience and talent. When we had our first few lessons, I knew he was the real deal. He knows his orchestral string instruments, especially my instrument of choice: the viola. I was even more impressed since he has performed with musicians like Chuck Mangione, Barbara Cook, and Andrea Bocelli. He has made my lessons fun, exciting, and very engaging. I highly recommend Nick to anyone wanting to learn a string instrument!

I teach scales, technique, shifting, vibrato, tonal exercises, solo pieces, and theory. I also teach group ensembles, trios, quartets, etc., in Classical, Religious, Fiddle, Pop. I help students with their school orchestral music and audition pieces also.

About Erin
My name is Erin. I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Music, with a concentration in Violin. I began studying violin at the age of six. I have performed with small chamber ensembles, orchestras, quartets, and trios. I enjoy playing for churches and weddings, and love teaching.

I began teaching beginner to advanced Violin and Viola in April of 2001 in NC. I moved to California in the fall of 2008. Since moving to California I have extended my teaching to beginner Piano and Cello also. I have taught students ages 3 to 87 how to play and enjoy music on a personal level. My experience includes leading sectionals for middle school orchestra, organizing and instructing small ensembles, and organizing student recitals. Student recitals I arranged once or twice a year to showcase the
students' growth and abilities, and to provide an opportunity to give back to family and friends whose sacrifices and support enable the students to succeed.

I teach because I love music and I believe God has given me a gift. Playing and teaching help me to use my talent for His glory. I love working with people and I love how music enables people of all ages to open up and express themselves in a positive way, no matter what life throws their way. I believe music teaches discipline, builds self esteem; helps set and achieve goals; and positively affects and enhances other curricular endeavors.

My teaching philosophy is to always have fun while learning, to set attainable goals for the student, to learn through encouragement and discipline, and to help students come to love music on a personal level. I focus on the character of each student and their goals and desires to see that the student and/or parents are satisfied. Teaching is a privilege for me that I do not take for granted.

*** Lesson Details ***
I offer half hour, forty-five minute, sixty minute lessons, or longer on a weekly basis, but I do Not offer bi-weekly lessons. My lessons begin with the fundamentals of music. I believe a firm foundation in rhythm and reading is important because a student may switch musical instruments one day and the basics are universal and necessary. I have a deep love and appreciation for music which I hope to instill in my students as well. I am strict in the sense that I like students to polish their pieces before moving on. I like to keep them focused on playing well, not just playing.

A typical lesson will begin with scales to warm up, a review of the previous week's material, and a new assignment. Students will memorize pieces, be proficient in scales and rhythms, and all the while laughing and having a great time. I am known with my students for my creative analogies and flexibility to try new things in order to adapt to the students strengths and weaknesses. My students look forward to coming to their lesson, and that is very rewarding as a teacher.

I primarily use the Suzuki method for Violin and Viola, because it offers progressive steps to mastering technique, style, and musicality. My curriculum includes the use of Winning Rhythms, Wohlfahrt studies, All for Strings Theory, Essentials for Strings, and many more beginner and advanced studies; including shifting and double stops.

I love music and I love working with people; teaching is just icing on the cake. I look forward to helping you achieve your goals and discover your talents and I hope we can learn together. I look forward to meeting you!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music Stand and Keyboard

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to have their instrument, and necessary accessories ie: rosin, shoulder rest, strings, books, and music stand.

*** Specialties ***
I teach Music on Violin, Viola, and Piano, as well as beginner cello. I am very creative in my teaching methods, though I use the Suzuki Method primarily for string instruments. I believe learning should be fun. I teach all the fundamentals of music from the beginning: counting rhythm, scales, reading music, theory.

About Rachel
A student of Yumi Hwang-Williams, Sally O'Reilly, Joey Corpus, and Mark Lakirovich, Rachel holds a Diploma in violin from Denver School of the Arts and furthered her studies in violin and viola performance at the University of Denver and the Longy School of Music of Bard College. She has played under the direction of noted conductors David Zinman, Julius Rudel, and Michael Stern at the Aspen Music Festival, James DePriest at the Las Vegas Music Festival, and, most recently, Benjamin Zander of the Boston Philharmonic. She has performed by invitation at Music on the Rhine in Dusseldorf, Germany, Aspen Music Festival, Las Vegas Music Festival, and on tour with members of the Minnesota Orchestra and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.

Currently, Rachel performs with the Prometheus Chamber Orchestra, a self-conducted ensemble based in Philadelphia
, and with the classical and traditional duo Driftwood. Her repertoire also reaches beyond classical music, with recent projects including performances of jazz and traditional fiddle styles throughout the Boston area, and recordings with Ran Blake, the founding chair of New England Conservatory's Department of Contemporary Improvisation, on a CD released in 2015 titlted "Ghost Tones". In addition to her work as a performer, Rachel runs an active studio and specializes in teaching both conventional and Suzuki violin method as well as beginning and intermediate fiddle. Rachel is Suzuki Certified through Book 3.

*** Lesson Details ***
I like to teach students using a combination of Traditional method books as well as Suzuki. I believe that it's equally important for students to be able to play music by ear as it is to be able to sight-read off of a score. In a typical lesson, we will cover scales, exercises in technique, etudes, and a movement of a classical piece. I also like to play duets with students as I believe it helps improve the ear and acclimate a student for playing in group or orchestral settings.
I encourage all students to bring a notebook with them to every lesson and will write down what is being worked on and the areas of improvement. I've found that it's vastly helpful to be able to go back and look at what was covered in a lesson when you're at home practicing!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio is in a private room, neat, organized, with plenty of instruments. She has a music stand, extra equipment, instruments, and seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
If a student lives in a reasonably subway/bus accessible area then I have no problem traveling to them for lessons.

*** Specialties ***
Classical, Fiddle, Violin, Viola

Very good instructor

Rachel is a warm and inviting person, and she made me feel very welcome on my first visit. She definitley does get right down to business in lessons. I am an older student and have never played violin before, so I thought I might struggle to learn. The opposite seems true. Rachel spent the first couple of sessions perfecting my posture and bow holds. We moved on to playing rhythms and reading sheet music, shortly after. I've only been practicing once a week for 2 months, and I can already play simple sheet music! That's huge for me! Rachel's instruction is clear and patient, and she's very easy-going. She also has a good sense of humor and a great way of phrasing things so that it's simple to understand her.

The only thing that can be difficult sometimes is getting a hold of her by phone or email. Sometimes she takes a bit to respond, she always does eventually catch up with me, though. Overall, I'm pleased with my lessons.

Though violin was the first instrument I learned, the viola just might be my favorite to teach! Technique, confidence building and rhythm are my main focuses for viola students. In addition to performance skills, I aim to give all my students musical knowledge about theory, music history and musical terminology.

About Amanda
Hello, I'm excited you're thinking about music lessons! It is my passion to provide high-quality education to young learners. I obtained my B.M. in Violin Performance from West Chester University. I have been furthering my teaching skills as an active American String Teachers Association member, through Suzuki training, and pedagogy study at The Juilliard School during the Starling-Delay Symposium on Violin Studies. I perform locally and love playing for opera and musical theater.

I work to help students create and achieve their musical goals. I pride myself on clearly communicating lesson topics and assignments so every student knows exactly what must be practiced for the upcoming lessons. Teacher clarity helps students practice in a more focused fashion so they can improve as steadily and quickly as possible. I ensure my students get
the most out of each lesson by using a variety of teaching styles and tools. Students with longer lessons (45 minutes or more) can benefit from music theory workbooks and games which I incorporate into the lessons. My goal is to make every lesson fun and challenging for my students!

Hard-working students will prepare for auditions with local youth orchestras.

I offer multiple performance opportunities each year. In the past I organized formal spring recitals where all my students gained the experience of playing with an accompanist in a recital hall. Special opportunities include honors recitals and Duet Day performances. Of course, these opportunities change from year to year, but the emphasis is always on giving a performance to be proud of!

It is my pleasure to recommend Amanda as a violin instructor. On very short notice, she enthusiastically agreed to help my daughter prepare for a middle school orchestra audition, even though we were not on Amanda's roster of clients. In two 30 minute private lessons she was able to acclimate my daughter to the two challenging audition pieces, address questions about technique and also taught her how to tune her instrument. Thanks to Amanda's excellent teaching and flexibility, my daughter had a great experience for her first audition.

I started viola 4 years ago in order to expand opportunities and get to know more about this amazing instrument, but I began teaching about 1 year ago. I am comfortable teaching beginners to advanced students, and incorporate basic music theory, note reading, and any other skills a student may require based on their skill level.

About Ava
A recent Master of Music graduate of University of Colorado Boulder, Ava began her violin studies at the age of six. During her undergraduate degree at Truman State University, Ava was a two-time Gold Medal Concerto Competition finalist and regularly appeared as concertmaster with the Truman State Symphony orchestra, where she has also held the positions of principal second violinist and principal violist.

As an active chamber musician, Ava was the first violinist in Truman State University’s President’s String Quartet, the university’s only highly competitive string chamber ensemble. She toured Italy twice with the President’s String Quartet, performing recitals in 2013 and 2015.

At CU, Ava has served as concert master and principal second violinist of the Eklund Opera Orchestra, principal second violinist of the University of Co
lorado Chamber Orchestra, and as a section violinist with the University of Colorado Symphony Orchestra. During the summer of 2016, she travelled to Italy as part of CU's "Renaissance in the XXI Century" program where she studied with Alberto Bologni and performed a wide variety of chamber music.

Ava is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Music in Violin Performance at the University of Colorado-Boulder under Professors Karoly Schranz and Harumi Rhodes. Her past teachers include Dr. Sam McClure, Julie Lundgren, and Kathy Karpicke.

Viola lessons will focus on technique and fundamentals in the context of the repertoire you are learning! You can expect to receive clear practice goals and I encourage a communicative dynamic among teacher and student.

About Patti
I am a professional violinist and violist based in New York City. I received my Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Violin Performance from New York University (with a minor in mathematics!) in 2010 and 2012, and am currently working on my Ph.D in Violin Performance at NYU.

As a teacher, I have taught students of all ages and levels of experience, ranging from beginner students to professional practitioners. I currently teach violin at Western Connecticut State University and New York University, and also maintain a private studio in the tristate area.

I believe that every student is different in how they progress and have a flexible approach to teaching, but do believe that awareness of technique and fundamentals is the key to progress. While working with me, students can expect clear guidelines regarding practice goals for a week,
and a communicative relationship between student and teacher. In an ideal teacher-student relationship, the student should always feel free to express to me if an approach is not working for them, or if they do not understand a concept explained in lessons! I am also willing to work with students regarding repertoire, and have experience with working with differently abled students.

As a performer, I make a point of engaging with a variety of classical and non-classical genres, including rock, pop, and jazz music. I currently play with an indie rock band called OWEL, and have also performed with contemporary music groups Alarm Will Sound, Argento New Music Project, ensemble mise-en, ETHEL, Hotel Elefant, Newspeak, Signal, The Wordless Music Orchestra, with the avant-rock Burning City Orchestra led by Noam Faingold, metal string quartet seven)suns, and the disco band Escort. I have also played in the company of a variety of artists spanning many genres, including Icelandic singer Björk, avant-jazz-funk band Medeski, Martin and Wood, Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead, the band Goldfrapp, Icelandic electronic artist Valgeir Sigurdsson, John Cale from the Velvet Underground, rock band Deep Purple, and Afro-Peruvian singer Eva Ayllón, in a variety of concert halls, bars, and living rooms, including Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, Melbourne Recital Center, Muziekgebouw a’ant Ij in Amsterdam, the Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi, (Le) Poisson Rouge, Merkin Hall, Roulette, Issue Project Room, Galapagos, Symphony Space, and Death by Audio.

Suzuki method preferred for students under 6.

About Carolyn
Hey, everyone! My name is Carolyn and I’ve been teaching for a little over 8 years now! I’ve taught violin and viola in countless high schools, grade schools, and music schools around the city. I’m classically trained, but also have a wide range of Jazz, Fiddle, and Contemporary knowledge.

If you’re looking into true contemporary violin performance, look no further. I’ve played with some of the best musicians in the Philadelphia area at venues such as: The TLA, Wells Fargo, World Cafe Live... and more, backing an up and coming recording artist from the TV show, The Voice. I also play in some Indie & Irish bands around town. So if you’re not looking to go the classical route, I can help with that!

If the classical training route is what you desire, I have a planned out teaching method which will require (depending on age) certain bo
oks to be ordered/ purchased at your earliest convenience.

Education: Settlement Music School, Gregory Teperman (Walnut Street Theater, Philly Pops), Temple University (Music Ed)
