About Valyncia
I believe everyone has the ability to sing … some better than others, of course, -- but regardless, I believe every voice can make a beautiful sound. I believe learning to sing requires team work: with the proper instruction and learning tools from me, the instructor, and with the dedication (practice, practice, practice) from you, the student, a well-rounded singer can emerge. If you can hear the proper note, I can help your vocal instrument play to its fullest abilities.

I began singing when I was five years old in church. I continued singing exclusively inspirational music until I was a teenager. At that time, in addition to the second soprano part I sang in a five-part harmony a Capella (without instrumental accompaniment) Gospel group, I also sang in a few bands (Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, and Rock). My undergraduate studies we
re completed at the American University, where I majored in Communications (B.A.), and minored in Music, voice being my instrument. During my undergraduate studies, I was recruited and performed as the lead female vocalist for a Rock band that a few fellow music students had formed. While in college, I was trained in classical voice, piano, music theory, musical theater performance, and vocal pedagogy (vocal training). My vocal pedagogy studies credentialed me to become a professional vocal instructor. I began teaching voice after I earned my degree, and have been teaching private voice lessons for over ten years.

Most of my present expertise in teaching voice grew from my vocal pedagogy studies, my teaching experience which has developed over time, my own personal vocal dedication, and my training and understanding of various genres of vocal performance. My present singing career is as an inspirational singer; my vocal students encompass various genres in which I have experience, including: Inspirational, Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Rock, Classical, as well as various degrees of popular music.

*** Audition Preparation ***
I have coached many of my students to prepare for auditions: auditions to be accepted into performing arts schools, parts in musicals and plays, joining a band or vocal ensemble, as well as auditions for televised singing shows, such as "The Voice," "Sunday's Best," "American Idol" and "The X Factor."

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students by using the tried and true techniques I have found to be successful, and allow the student to be my guide as to which direction to take with his or her vocal training. Whether the student is a novice, a professional, or somewhere in between, each student, after obtaining the basic singing knowledge and techniques, will have a vocal training schedule geared to his or her individual needs and development. Lessons are for the most part very casual in nature, and the student’s dedication (practice, practice, practice) will dictate whether or not the lessons become stricter. A few months into the vocal instruction, students will be given the opportunity to learn more about reading music and sight singing, if he or she so chooses, as well as vocal performance techniques for singing in front of an audience. Within one year, dedicated students may also have the opportunity to show off what they have learned, and perform in front of an audience at a recital with other vocal students. Please note that my preference is to work with teens age 13 through adults of any age. I believe that younger voices need more time to develop and stand to be damaged if too much stress is put on them too soon. However, exceptions for children under 13 may be made for gifted young singers.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home studio- entry room of home, baby grand piano, seating area, dry erase board, mirrors
Music Studio- one recording studio, seating area, classroom

*** Travel Equipment ***
If needed, I provide a portable piano keyboard, microphone with amplifier, paper handouts of lessons, etc. The student needs to have paper to take notes and a writing instrument.

*** Specialties ***
Most of my voice lesson experience has been with adults, and contemporary popular and inspirational music.

About John
I started playing guitar from the time I was 11 years old and started getting paid for my first gigs with a band when I was 16. Shortly after that, I started teaching my first students when I was 17 years old. I was constantly busy, driving from school to peoples houses on weekdays while studying jazz guitar with an instructor, as well as with the paul green school of rock. On weekends I performed with paying gigs in live bands.

I have studied music and guitar at the Berklee College of Music in Boston Massachusets, and Music Therapy, Jazz Guitar, and Psychology at Montclair State University/Cali School of Music. I currently continue to further my education, and am learning every day.

From my education background, I have a certification in Master Luthiery from the Summit School of Guitar Building and repair.

Besides working as
a guitar teacher, technician, and performer, I have also worked as an open mic host.

I am currently 26 years old and still performing, teaching, and working as a technician and Luthier on a regular day to day basis.

When teaching, I like to tailor each lesson to that particular student. I take great care in planning and expanding each encounter for both the student's short term and long term development in both life and music. I aim to offer: Music theory and the application of such to the guitar. While most teachers either focus on theory, or learning and playing songs on an instrument, I find it important to be able to use, as an example, applicable theories such as scales and key signatures along with a foundation to the songs we will be learning. These songs can either be of my own or the student's choosing. Essentially, by approaching lessons with a rational knowledge of music along with a hands on experience of playing an instrument, I can create a fun and successful experience for any student.

About Matthew
Hello!
My name is Matthew Foss and I am a student at Belmont University studying everything that has to do with Bass. I am 20 years old and have extensive experience teaching people of all ages both music and sports! I am very relaxed and understand the desire to learn songs and things you enjoy hearing on the radio over scales and arpeggios. Through what you enjoy listening to and playing we can incorporate everything else, such as scales and arpeggios, to help you gain an understanding for the reason music sounds the way it does and how the bass influences that! Look forward to hearing from you all and helping you become the best bass player that you can be!

I am a practicing music therapist, using my musical skills as a teacher to enhance the lives of other individuals by teaching them how to approach, play and learn an instrument. I graduate from Marywood University with an undergraduate degree in music therapy with a focus in percussion as well as minors in piano and guitar.

Music therapy is an evidence-based approach facilitated by a board-certified music therapist who uses music interventions to help individuals reach various goals. As a music therapist, I have used guitar and piano in my approaches with individuals. I use a wide range of songs and styles while working with individuals that have included but are not limited to folk, jazz, rock, religious and pop. I have taught individuals beginner guitar and piano as a means to benefit their overall health, develop leisure skill
s or just simply to give them something fun to do!

Currently, I serve as a volunteer musician for my local church as their drum set player. Primarily, the songs played are within the genre of rock/pop. I play with a full band including singers, a bassist, guitarists and pianists. Apart from this experience, my college education has trained me in various drum set styles and approaches that include jazz, funk, new age, etc. I also am in perform in an acoustic duo as a guitarist and singer. We have played at local open mics and other venues in the Greater Scranton Area.

I also play acoustic guitar, piano, percussion and sing in an acoustic duo band with my fiancé. We play at various locations throughout the Greater Scranton Area. Our focus is on taking different songs and making them appropriate for an acoustic setting. We have performed at different open mic nights and other events.

My lessons focus on the individual and their current goals, needs and talent. I take into account the personal desire and motivation of all students to ensure that they are successful and are enjoying themselves! I have extensive experience working with individuals with special needs and other disabilities. My approach focuses on the individual in order to plan for success and enjoyment. Feel free to ask a question and let's get things rolling!

About Julie
I am a professional musician, specializing in traditional American and Irish music and song; I can, however, also teach classical guitar and beginning-intermediate violin. My CD, "American Stranger," has received critical acclaim and I have authored two books on DADGAD guitar for Mel Bay Publications.

I taught myself guitar at the age of thirteen, but took three years of lessons at Washington University, where I also studied English and French. As an adult I became interested in fingerstyle guitar in open tunings, especially DADGAD. I am, however, happy to teach in standard tuning--including basic guitar proficiency, classical guitar, and "folk" guitar.

I have played violin since I was eleven, taking lessons until the age of sixteen and playing in both high school orchestra and the local youth symphony. I later learned to sus
pend much of my classical technique in order to play both old-time and traditional Irish fiddle as authentically as possible; but I still retain my initial training and apply good basic violin technique to my fiddle and (of course) her violin teaching, while tailoring it to the musical idioms of each of students.

I have also studied voice, which again, however, I have never allowed to interfere with my performance of traditional songs--largely because I had developed a traditional approach to the singing of both American southern mountain repertory and traditional Irish song many years before receiving any formal instruction. This training, however, has given me greater insight into how to get the most out of your voice for almost any style.

I also taught myself to play lap dulcimer, basing my approach on the Eastern Kentucky styles associated with Jean Ritchie, Barbara Edwards, and Anne MacFie—that is, primarily using a small dowel stick or noter to sound the melody, and playing counter-melodies for song accompaniments.

My clawhammer banjo-playing is influenced by various Appalachian instrumentalists and accompanists (including Dock Boggs, Clarence Ashley, Hobart Smith, and Lily May Ledford), but my style is also influenced by years of playing with midwestern and southern-style fiddlers.

I welcome students ages 10 or above, and have learned to adapt my teaching style to the individual student, helping each one to make the most of his or her talents and enthusiasms, while emphasizing sound technique and good practice habits.
