As a teacher, I completed a year-long vocal pedagogy course with Cynthia Bess which provided me with a thorough understanding of the anatomy and psychology of singing, as well as a systematic approach to the correction of vocal faults. One of my students, a teen-aged boy, was selected to attend Eastman's summer program for high school students, and another student received a full college scholarship in music. Several of my students have performed leading roles in school, community, and university musical productions.
I hold a full voting membership in the National Association of Teachers of Singing, am a Licensed Kindermusik Educator, am employed as Director of Music Ministry for a fairly large church, and am a chapter officer for the American Guild of Organists. I was also a teaching artist at Propel East Charter School for Greensburg American Opera and directed the Old Economy Singers (a twenty-voice historical choir) for six years.

I provide professional, knowledgeable, and individualized instruction in a supportive and encouraging environment. During the course of study with me, I expect voice students will improve vocal technique and sound quality, alleviate physical tension which may be interfering with phonation, expand their range, learn new repertoire, increase confidence, and grow as performing artists.
My vocal teaching method focuses on correct breathing and resonance; I also incorporate some activities from Barry Green's "Inner Game of Music" technique. Although my teaching is grounded in a scientific approach to the process of phonation, I also believe singing should be a fun experience for the student. We sing to communicate! I believe that a thorough technical foundation is necessary for free and healthy singing in any genre of music. I am willing to work with students in the vocal styles that interest them most; although my professional performance experience is in opera and musical theatre, I have also successfully worked with students whose interests included jazz, pop, rock, folk music, contemporary Christian music, and choral singing.
My piano pedagogical method matches each student with the right curriculum-- Alfred, Schaum, or Piano Adventures-- plus supplemental technical exercises such as scales, arpeggios, and Czerny and Hanon exercises. All students are exposed to theory through worksheets, games, and other applied activities. As soon as possible, I introduce "real" repertoire from master composers.

I provide copies of music and exercises. If I am teaching at a student's home, I expect him/her to provide a keyboard instrument.

I believe that a strong technical foundation emphasizing correct breathing and placement will allow voice students to sing in a healthy manner in any style of music. My professional performance credentials are primarily in opera, but I also have musical theatre experience and have successfully worked with students whose interests include opera, musical theatre, jazz, pop, rock, gospel, Irish folk music, and choral singing. In piano lessons, I emphasize technique and musicianship through a balance of exercises, repertoire, and theory activities.

Emily is an awesome coach and instructor. Yes I said coach! A coach actually encourages you, and that is what she did for me. Anyway, as for the title, "What I DIDN'T Know", there were things in film auditions that I didn't know that would were actually sabotaging my chances for auditions. Why you should hire me: A book can teach you a lot of stuff, and if you are one of those few individuals who absorbs everything they see or read and become instant masters (think Neo learning Jiu Jitsu in the Matrix), then you don't need me, and really, you don't need anyone here. But if you're like most people, then some of the concepts might be a bit tricky and often a few helpful analogies and rephrasing of material is necessary. That's where I excel. If you struggle with concepts, I work to find ways to get the information into your mind in a way that might be more meaningful to you.
For example, I was teaching students about Newton's Third Law (action and reaction). I asked them if they had ever been driving down a highway and hit a bug. They answered yes, and then I asked them why the bug splattered instead of the windshield. Categorically, they gave me the incorrect answer of "well, the bug hit the windshield with more force, didn't it?" I didn't answer them, but instead I showed them a video clip of a drag race between a Lamborghini Aventador and a Bugatti Veyron. Both cars went 0-60 in under 3 seconds. Pretty impressive. I turned off the video and asked them the question about the bug again, and they seemed confused, so I nudged them a bit more. "How long did it take that Veyron to go from 0-60?" A student shouted out, "about 2.6 seconds!" Then I asked him, "and how long did it take that hovering insect to get from 0 to 60, which is how fast your car was going when you hit him?" Suddenly, light bulbs started to flicker... "that was instant, like milliseconds!" I smiled as others started weighing in. "Yeah, that bug went 0-60 in under a second, so its ACCELERATION was greater!" So I finally answered, "correct, the force of the bug hitting the windshield is EXACTLY the same (but in the other direction) as the force of the windshield hitting the bug. Using Newton's Second Law equation, F=ma, if the forces are equal, but the mass of the car is MUCH MUCH bigger than the mass of the bug, it's easy to see what happens...[huge differences in acceleration]. And that is what ultimately destroys the bug. It's like a phrase I once heard from a skydiver--it's not the fall that hurts. It's the sudden stop at the end that can kill ya."

PS... you might think that my online rates don't reflect the standard discount that many other tutors here give their students. That is true. While I don't shun technology, I also understand its limitations. Both of my specialties (chemistry and physics) involve a lot of equations and drawings... these are easily conveyed in short time when face to face. But when having to draw on a camera and/or type equations with lots of subscripts and superscripts, a lot of time is wasted. I don't discourage online help outright, but I don't recommend it as an initial session. That is why my prices display only a modest discount.

It seems that his teaching style is leading students to their own conclusions by giving them hints and guidance along the way including physical examples and practice work. My name is Kyla and I am currently a working actress and substitute teacher. I am on a webseries that just won a pilot competition, I just wrapped a play and start rehearsals for another one in June, and I have done a number of other live shows, short films, and webseries. I have taught theater, I substitute teach, currently, and I have babysat and tutored. I am originally from the UK but moved to USA, GA a few years ago.
I started teaching right out of university and initally taught students from 15-19, but as my career progressed I taught all age groups from K-post graduate.
I hold a PhD in social science, an EdD in education, an MBA, MEd. in teaching those with additional needs to read, MSc. in Psychology/Neuropyschology and a BSc. in Psychology.
