At the recommendation of my professors during my undergraduate program, I worked at the university as a music theory tutor. I currently give music theory lessons to my students at the Settlement School, as well as to my private cello students.

About Rachel

I have a BFA in Cello Performance from UW-Milwaukee. As a student, I worked for the university as a tutor in Music Theory, at the recommendation of my professors. Since relocating to Philadelphia, I have established myself as an educator all over the city. I am the cello instructor at the Baldwin

It's no surprise that it's hard to learn an instrument as an adult. Apart from a semester of guitar lessons in college, I had no musical training and no understanding of music theory. All I knew was that I loved the sound of a cello, and I was graciously gifted one on my 28th birthday.

I am proud to say that I have been Rachel's cello student for over three years now. Since the beginning, Rachel has made sure that I felt comfortable during our lessons, and she remains reassuring even when I get discouraged with my bow hold or tight fingers.

Rachel has taught me a lot about music theory, but she's mostly taught me how to love my instrument. It has been amazing to see and hear the progress I've made, and she continues to give me more exciting challenges to practice each week. She's been attentive to my learning style and my ever-evolving cello goals, and I've been consistently impressed with how she's been able to keep our lessons interesting and fun over the years.

Rachel and I meet for an hour once a week and I look forward to every lesson! She has been the best instructor, and I look forward to many more lessons to come.

I’m an adult student and Rachael has been my instructor for almost two years now. She’s very knowledgeable and PATIENT! Ive grown so much in the past two years and I’m looking forward to more.

Jan is a wonderful teacher and we recommend him highly to students of any age. My son really likes Jan's teaching method and appreciates that he is so musically current and kind -- high praise from a teenager! Jan is easygoing but is also innovative and thorough in his approach, and it's been a pleasure for the rest of us to get to know him too. I haven't always been successful in the past at getting my son to focus on lessons but Jan has a way of encouraging that progress along. As a result, my son has learned a lot in a short time and really enjoys the piano now.

To whom It may concern,

This is a letter of recommendation for Jan Jurchak as a teacher of piano instruction for young children. He is a man of high technical skill and ability, yet he can still make the basic movements fun and entertaining for kids of all ages. My 8 and 10 year old children took to his kind manner and positive teaching techniques immediately, he was their instructor for two years. Their aptitude for the instrument grew as their desire to perform better for their
teacher amplified with each session. They gladly did their practices on their own, in hopes of excelling and impressing their new mentor every lesson. They were
encouraged to think about the instrument in their own way; to bring in pieces of music that they liked and wanted to learn. In short time, both children began to
read and write music. Long after Jan has left our lives, the girls love of piano has continued to expand and develop; truly the gift that keeps giving. I could not more highly recommend this man as a music instructor for children. You would be lucky to have him!

To Whom It May Concern:
This letter is to attest to the character and proficiency of our former keyboard instructor Jan Jurchak who instructed our twin, 12 year old girls for 2 years from the ages of 9 through 11. Our girls were able to progress from having no proficiency on the piano up to a middle intermediate level through the instruction of Jan whom we received once weekly 30-45 minute lessons Jan has demonstrated integrity in his work and dedication to teaching our young children and as a result has earned our trust and respect as an outstanding example
We have observed Jan work with others in his initial as an instructor for Spotlight Arts Center in Saugus, California and later as our private instructor. Throughout our working relationship Jan freely assisted us in providing useful feedback to enhance learning between lessons and build confidence in their ability to play the instrument. Jan demonstrated a consistently high level of professionalism and expertise in his craft. As such my wife and I are highly recommending Jan for the position of Music/Keyboard instructor that he is pursuing.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions, clarifications or concerns regarding this statement of recommendation.
Sincerely,
Vincent Kondo and Sri Utami

Talented teachers are rare. Like a great coach i sports... the coach doesn’t need to be the top athlete in his field to know how to teach each team member to hone their best abilities, he just has to know and see how to teach you how to get there. Being an outstanding teacher is a great talent all in itself... and that is Jesse. He has that quality and ability to lead, focus and take you where you want to go.

Jesse has given directions on how to successfully become a better musician. His approach and explanation on musical theories was much more understandable than what I was previously reading. Overall, I found the lessons to be very usefull.

I have been taking guitar lessons with Nick Russo since February 2018. In my opinion, Nick Russo is a terrific musician and an outstanding teacher. He is an active gigging musician with an encyclopedic knowledge of music theory and music history and is well-versed in various types of music including, but not limited to classical, jazz, metal, folk, world music, etc., etc. Nick comes from a musical family and is very passionate about music, and this comes accross loud and clear in his lessons. He lives and breathes music.

I came to Nick after taking lessons for several years with another teacher. I liked this teacher very much, and the lessons only ended because the teacher moved to another geographic location. Although I did like this teacher, the lessons were starting to get stale and repetitious. When I started working with Nick that feeling was turned around. Lessons with Nick are very stimulating and interesting. Although Nick knows sight reading and theory well, he places a great emphasis on aural (ear) training. I have worked with him learning intervals, scales and songs, using my ears instead of my head. It’s a little hard to explain, but it’s a very organic kind of way to learn music. You learn the instrument more intuitively and I have had a number of’ “aha” moments when some pattern or connection or aspect of theory makes sense in a deep way. In the time that I’ve worked with Nick, my knowledge of the fretboard, and my ability to figure things out by ear has improved tremendously although I still have a long way to go.

Nick is also an incredibly kind and compassionate person, and he has shown a great deal of patience when working with me. If I don’t understand something he will try to break it down or present it in such a way that it finally makes sense to me. He has also worked a lot with me on my technique, and has tried to help me play more efficiently and ergonomically. Earlier in my guitar playing career, I developed

tendonitis in my left hand from playing. In addition, I have chronic lower back problems. Nick has made numerous helpful suggestions so that I don’t exacerbate these problems or injure myself again. One suggestion that was particularly helpful was to use a bass guitar strap for my electric guitar. Because the bass strap is much wider than a regular guitar strap, the weight is more evenly distributed across my back, resulting in less back strain.

I began my lessons with Nick face-to-face, but this changed to video due to the coronavirus pandemic. We utilize Skype and it seems to work pretty well, although there’s no substitute for meeting in person. Nick seems very adept at working in this modality. For example, he will have me position the camera so he can see how I am playing something. He will also provide close-ups of his own fingering to show me how he is playing something. In addition, Nick sends his students notes regarding the most salient points of each session. This is something he did even prior to the pandemic. Nick allows me to audio tape the sessions, and when I am able to go through the tape I gain an even deeper understanding of whatever was covered.

In short I feel that Nick is great person and a terrific teacher and that I was very lucky to have found him. I would recommend him to anyone with no reservation.
Brian
He is fanstastic! A very patient teacher who was always willing to go the extra step to help me learn and improve. I miss our lessons. However I still follow much of the advice and tricks he taught me!
J.E.P.
My son, who is 10 and has been playing guitar for two years, has been taking Nick’s band class for the last 9 months and we are very happy with it. Nick is not only a great musician, but as a father himself knows well how to teach kids and make them engage in whatever they are playing.

He has taught my son not only how to play with well with other musicians, but also how to find his “voice” within a band both in the rhythmic and solo sections of the songs.

He was accommodating when we had to reschedule a class due to personal reasons, and is always willing to make the class a little bit longer if necessary to finish what they were practicing.

When the Covid-19 pandemic forced us to have the lessons remotely, he started to use ZOOM and, while things remotely cannot be the same, he did a great job at making sure that they stayed as close to true form as possible.

I studied music theory at the Rhode Island School of Modern Music, at the Mannes Conservatory of Music in Manhattan, and at the Reuben Conservatory, in Jerusalem, Israel.
My background in theory is primarily in jazz, which uses some slightly different terminology than classical theory, but mostly applies to all styles, especially as pertains to beginning theory.
