I am a full-time pedagogue/performer with ten years' experience teaching private lessons in voice, piano, and acting to a range of ages and levels of students. Although the majority of my students are young adults, I have worked successfully with children, teenagers, and adult students (twenties to senior citizens) of both genders; I tailor my approach specifically to the goals and interests of each student; no two people learn the same way.
I hold a Bachelor's of Music in vocal performance from West Virginia University (summa cum laude, WVU Outstanding Senior, Honors College J. and C. Nath Outstanding Senior, Rhodes and Marshall Scholarships candidate) and a Masters' degree in Sacred Music (organ emphasis) from Duquesne University. I regularly perform as a soloist in opera, oratorio, concerts, and recitals and completed training throu
gh the Ezio Pinza Concil for American Singers of Opera in Italy, the American Singers' Opera Project of North Carolina, and the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria.
As a teacher, I completed a year-long vocal pedagogy course with Cynthia Bess which provided me with a thorough understanding of the anatomy and psychology of singing, as well as a systematic approach to the correction of vocal faults. One of my students, a teen-aged boy, was selected to attend Eastman's summer program for high school students, and another student received a full college scholarship in music. Several of my students have performed leading roles in school, community, and university musical productions.
I hold a full voting membership in the National Association of Teachers of Singing, am a Licensed Kindermusik Educator, am employed as Director of Music Ministry for a fairly large church, and am a chapter officer for the American Guild of Organists. I was also a teaching artist at Propel East Charter School for Greensburg American Opera and directed the Old Economy Singers (a twenty-voice historical choir) for six years.

*** Lesson Details ***
I provide professional, knowledgeable, and individualized instruction in a supportive and encouraging environment. During the course of study with me, I expect voice students will improve vocal technique and sound quality, alleviate physical tension which may be interfering with phonation, expand their range, learn new repertoire, increase confidence, and grow as performing artists.
My vocal teaching method focuses on correct breathing and resonance; I also incorporate some activities from Barry Green's "Inner Game of Music" technique. Although my teaching is grounded in a scientific approach to the process of phonation, I also believe singing should be a fun experience for the student. We sing to communicate! I believe that a thorough technical foundation is necessary for free and healthy singing in any genre of music. I am willing to work with students in the vocal styles that interest them most; although my professional performance experience is in opera and musical theatre, I have also successfully worked with students whose interests included jazz, pop, rock, folk music, contemporary Christian music, and choral singing.
My piano pedagogical method matches each student with the right curriculum-- Alfred, Schaum, or Piano Adventures-- plus supplemental technical exercises such as scales, arpeggios, and Czerny and Hanon exercises. All students are exposed to theory through worksheets, games, and other applied activities. As soon as possible, I introduce "real" repertoire from master composers.

What I DIDN'T Know

Emily is an awesome coach and instructor. Yes I said coach! A coach actually encourages you, and that is what she did for me. Anyway, as for the title, "What I DIDN'T Know", there were things in film auditions that I didn't know that would were actually sabotaging my chances for auditions. Emily worked on these real quick and fixed them up.Long story short, I had an audition yesterday, and using Emily's lessons's the casting director said, "Wow, that was actually really good"

Alexandra has been teaching harp and piano around the country for eighteen years through her personal harp studio and the Salvi Showroom in Southern California. She has also worked as a sectional coach for the Orange County Youth Symphony, Asia America Youth Symphony, and Palos Verdes Regional Symphony Orchestra. Her students are currently attending Eastman School of Music, Columbia University, Barnard College, Harvard University, Boston College, University of Pennslyvania, Princeton University, Northwestern University, University of Notre Dame, Yale University and Purdue University among others. Her students have also appeared on National television as well as playing for the Grammy Awards.

A strong supporter of the American Harp Society, she is Vice President of the American Harp Society Foundation. Alexandra is also co-chairman of
the distinguished Anne Adams Awards Harp Competition where she has been a main Director for fifteen years. She has served as the President of the Orange County Harp Society Chapter as well as a board member of the Bay Area Harp Society Chapter.

Alexandra received her Bachelor's Degree from DePauw University, majoring in Music and Anthropology. She also completed premedical studies at DePauw after spending her Junior year studying harp at the University of Oregon. She received her Master's Degree from Roosevelt University in Orchestral Studies, and did post graduate work at the University of Southern California in Harp Performance and Anthropology.

Alexandra's harp teachers have included: Sarah Bullen, Sally Maxwell, Edward Druzinsky, JoAnn Turovsky, Harriet Thompson Moore, Kara Bershad, Faye Seeman, Joy Andreasen, and Neva Lydiard. She has also had many mentors who have guided her life and career including: Kathleen Bride, Victor Salvi, Sally Maxwell, Patricia Masri- Fletcher, Robin Gordon- Cartier, Carrie Kourkoumelis, Dr. Craig Pare, and Karen Thielen.

Alexandra has performed in many master classes given by such internationally known harpists as Skaila Kanga, Jana Bouskova, Marie Pierre Langlamet, and Bryn Lewis. Alexandra has performed extensively throughout North America and Europe as a soloist, with small ensembles, and as an orchestral harpist. She has appeared in several television shows such as General Hospital. Her playing,"Is filled with care, artistry, and mature interpretation. She is a talented musician, well rounded in her knowledge of music, and has a healthy curiosity in areas beyond music." In addition to playing, Alexandra has also served as the Ambassador for Salvi Harps in North America for the past eleven years. In her role as National Sales Manager, she helped harpists from all over the world find their dream harps, learn to care for them, and has mentored them along the way.

Apart from harp activities, Alexandra also enjoys teaching middle school, teaching piano, coaching rowing, participation in sports activities, and writing articles for various journals including: The American Harp Journal, Chicago Health Magazine, and Atlanta Health Magazine. She also enjoys being a board member on the DePauw University Alumni Board and she enjoys working on music startup companies.

*** Lesson Details ***

As a HARP teacher, all of my
students play scales, arpeggios, and technical exercises in
their lessons. I believe having a strong technical base is the foundation for
every part of playing and you can't learn without it. I will set the repertoire
for students according to their technical progress and although I may
take into consideration a student's desires to learn a certain piece, there has
to be time and they have to be ready for it. I have both short term and long
term goals for each student that involve theory, technical ability, and
repertoire: fun, orchestral and solo. Adult students still have to learn
technique, it makes things much more fun and easy six months later, I promise! Beginning students will learn how to read notes, understand basic theory, and technique in a short amount of time, so don't be scared if you have never had a music lesson before. 

I require all students make
at least half an hour a day commitment to practice. I teach mostly the Grandjany method of harp technique, however, I also use Salzedo and Renie methods
at times to fit a particular students' build and unique physical attributes as well as what the piece requires. I
have studied all techniques throughout my education and I find them all
beneficial for different reasons. I do, however, believe everyone is built
differently and the technique should help the harpist play and not hinder them
from achieving their goals. Everyone learns at a different speed, but as a
brand new musician, after six months practicing regularly, you should be able
to read music fluently, understand basic theory concepts, be able to play with
both hands and four fingers on each hand, play all of the basic scales and
arpeggios musically and be able to play at least one piece memorized.
Curriculum is based on the student's technical ability and issues and is
individually created – if you learn slower than someone else, don’t worry about
your pace. In the end, lessons are about you personally and not someone else.

As a PIANO teacher, I want students to learn about music and not just the piano. Students will learn basic music theory and basic scales as a part of their lessons. They will also occasionally choose a song of their choosing to work on chords. I do promote note reading and theory, so I am not the right teacher for students who don't want to invest time in learning the basics. These basics are the building blocks of all music and can be used for any instrument the student chooses to learn in the future.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have harps and a piano at my studio, so you do not need to bring your harp to lessons. If you don't own a harp, you can rent one for around $45/month from several sources. 

*** Specialties ***
HARP - Grandjany Technique with an incorporation of Salzedo and French school depending on the player's body type and technical difficulties. I make use of the ABRSM as well as local, national, and international competitions depending on the student's level of commitment.

PIANO - I teach basic piano for fun through an Intermediate level. Although some students choose to take CM and ABRSM exams, I do not push them. I want students to enjoy piano and music lessons.

About Jacob
Biography
Jacob was born and raised in Palm Springs; California. Growing up with parents who had very different musical backgrounds, which led him to want to live in world full of music. At the age 10, he picked up his first guitar and began to take his first piano lessons and a year later then picking up the first pair of drumsticks. He developed a self-taught technique for drum set, while being mentored by his older brother, Sean, (endorsed by Aquarian Drumheads, and former student of LA Music Academy and University of Oregon) traditional jazz artist, Allen Goodman. (Goodman has performed with many famous jazz artists in his during his drumming career and was mentored by Buddy Rich. He wrote the intro to the George of the Jungle cartoon series, and is now playing with many jazz artists at Vickys of Santa Fe in Indian Wells, California
, with the Desert Cities Jazz Band) Gregory Whitmore, Band Director at Cathedral City High School, has also been a mentor to Jacob.

In 2009, he performed Ron Nelsons Danza Capriccio with the Cathedral City High School Symphonic Band and world renowned saxophonist Kenneth Tse at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. That event was followed by a performance tour of the United Kingdom with the Cathedral City High School Symphonic Band.

In 2011, he ventured off to France and Germany with the CCHS symphonic band for his second performance tour with the group. Playing at many venues including, Heidelberg Castle in Germany and Chateau Vaux-le-Vicomte, outside of Paris, France. He has been on national television performing at the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl in 2007 and in the Hollywood Christmas parade in 2010 with the CCHS Marching Band. He has performed with various groups within the community throughout the years.

In 2012, began studies at the Art Institute of California Inland Empire studying Audio Engineering and received his Bachelor's of Science in the subject in December of 2015. During the time of his undergraduate studies, Jacob was working with various local artists at local venues around the Inland Empire and Los Angeles. Eventually joining the band, "Eva and the Vagabonds" in 2015 and worked on the recently released EP as a recording and mastering engineer. With the band he has played at Dreamworks, SOKA university, American Parlor Songbook, and DVAC. Now, Jacob attends Cal State San Bernardino studying for a teaching credential in Career and Technical Education. As well, Jacob now works on American Parlor Songbook on NPR as an audio engineer, working with various actors, comedians, and artists from LA and all of over the United States.

Who I am: I am a veteran physics, chemistry, engineering, and tech-ed teacher at the Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy. My Pennsylvania teaching certifications are in chemistry, physics, and technology education. I have been at the school since it opened its doors in 2009. Prior to teaching, I worked as a chemical engineer and a stock trader. I've performed on Broadway (yes THAT one in NYC), and I used to play the bassoon. I love to ski and play with my two children.

Why I am here: I mentioned that I was a chemical engineer by education... but now I'm a teacher?!?? Why would I forsake a much more profitable career for one in education? Because I love teaching :) In the years that I di
dn't teach, I always found some hobby that involved teaching people to do stuff, whether it was being a ski instructor at Seven Springs, teaching tennis lessons, tutoring family friends, or teaching a session on stock markets and trading at CMU. I'm a teacher now, which means that I have most of my summer off. That's where you come in.

Why you should hire me: A book can teach you a lot of stuff, and if you are one of those few individuals who absorbs everything they see or read and become instant masters (think Neo learning Jiu Jitsu in the Matrix), then you don't need me, and really, you don't need anyone here. But if you're like most people, then some of the concepts might be a bit tricky and often a few helpful analogies and rephrasing of material is necessary. That's where I excel. If you struggle with concepts, I work to find ways to get the information into your mind in a way that might be more meaningful to you.

For example, I was teaching students about Newton's Third Law (action and reaction). I asked them if they had ever been driving down a highway and hit a bug. They answered yes, and then I asked them why the bug splattered instead of the windshield. Categorically, they gave me the incorrect answer of "well, the bug hit the windshield with more force, didn't it?" I didn't answer them, but instead I showed them a video clip of a drag race between a Lamborghini Aventador and a Bugatti Veyron. Both cars went 0-60 in under 3 seconds. Pretty impressive. I turned off the video and asked them the question about the bug again, and they seemed confused, so I nudged them a bit more. "How long did it take that Veyron to go from 0-60?" A student shouted out, "about 2.6 seconds!" Then I asked him, "and how long did it take that hovering insect to get from 0 to 60, which is how fast your car was going when you hit him?" Suddenly, light bulbs started to flicker... "that was instant, like milliseconds!" I smiled as others started weighing in. "Yeah, that bug went 0-60 in under a second, so its ACCELERATION was greater!" So I finally answered, "correct, the force of the bug hitting the windshield is EXACTLY the same (but in the other direction) as the force of the windshield hitting the bug. Using Newton's Second Law equation, F=ma, if the forces are equal, but the mass of the car is MUCH MUCH bigger than the mass of the bug, it's easy to see what happens...[huge differences in acceleration]. And that is what ultimately destroys the bug. It's like a phrase I once heard from a skydiver--it's not the fall that hurts. It's the sudden stop at the end that can kill ya."

I hope that example gives you insight into the type of tutor that I am. I hope to hear from you!

PS... you might think that my online rates don't reflect the standard discount that many other tutors here give their students. That is true. While I don't shun technology, I also understand its limitations. Both of my specialties (chemistry and physics) involve a lot of equations and drawings... these are easily conveyed in short time when face to face. But when having to draw on a camera and/or type equations with lots of subscripts and superscripts, a lot of time is wasted. I don't discourage online help outright, but I don't recommend it as an initial session. That is why my prices display only a modest discount.

Hank has easily been one of the best reasons why I was able to comprehend chemistry throughout the year. In a class where the teacher focuses on the student body rather than individual students. Hank taught me more than probably any of the students have learned throughout the year.

Mr. Lancet is my conceptual and AP Physics C teacher in high school at Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy. He is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He makes difficult concepts simple and relatable to everyday life so that his students can understand and practice high level concepts with ease. His unique teaching style makes every class fun, happy, and energetic. His positive attitude radiates into his students making the learning environment much better than the average class. Mr. Lancet does more than just get his students to pass a national exam, he manages to show them how to think creatively and analytically to give them skills they can use for the rest of their lives no matter what field they chose to enter. What he teaches does not just stick in his students' minds for the duration of his class but rather stays with them. He posses the rare skill to make his students interested in learning, allowing them to retain more of the information presented to them. Unlike traditional teachers, Mr. Lancet creates unique and fun experiments that test what knowledge his students have gathered in his courses and provide them with first hand accounts of the conceptual and theoretical topics covered in his classes. After I graduate from high school, if I am ever confused about any topic, related to the physical sciences or otherwise, Mr. Hank Lancet would be my first call. In no circumstance would I ever hesitate to hire Mr. Lancet should I require the aid.

I had Mr. Hank as an engineering teacher at my high school. What you will quickly see is that he has a wealth of knowledge just waiting to be shared with others. He is able to teach nearly every aspect of engineering, whether that be technical instruction or explaining what goes into being a good engineering student.

It seems that his teaching style is leading students to their own conclusions by giving them hints and guidance along the way including physical examples and practice work. Mr. Hank also is an incredibly patient teacher/tutor. He will use as many approaches as necessary to make sure that you will understand a topic.

I would not hesitate to hire Mr. Hank as a tutor. If you need help in science or engineering, I guarantee that you will have a very rewarding experience with Hank.

While attending the University of Southern California, where I received my M.F.A., I worked as a writing tutor in the USC Writing Center and also taught Classical Greek Mythology. After graduation, I taught Verbal, Writing and Literature SAT classes and worked as a private tutor in a variety of subjects.

I later taught for five years at the New York Film Academy in Universal City, CA, where I taught a variety of Critical Studies classes to various levels of students, some in certificate programs and others working towards their M.F.A.

Paul was my favorite teacher at the New York Film Academy.
Unlike most of the teachers, Mr. Paul put a lot of effort and creativity into planning his classes, which made them both stimulating and fun for us.
I also loved the fact that Mr. Paul always respected our opinions, and never made us feel stupid when we didn’t understand something. He was always very encouraging and willing to keep explaining until we got it.

I highly recommend him to anyone interested in extra lessons. He is definitely worth it!

I am a recent graduate of Northwestern University, where I studied theatre and marketing and filled my time with a variety of creative pursuits from musical theatre to makeup design. However, the most important thing I learned at school was that my true passion is sharing my creativity with others through teaching. I have multiple years' experience as a vocal coach, piano accompanist, music director, and audition prep advisor. I also tutor young adults in the ACT and other high school subjects both in person and online, and have seen marked success in my students' test scores. About Victoria
Hey, I have been playing the violin for 24 years and have loved teaching students along the way. I started teaching in high school, and have had several students since. Currently I am teaching a 4 year old and an 8 year old.

I am a licensed Special Education Teacher and have worked with students with various disabilities for the past 7 years. I am trained in applied behavior analysis and have used it in private and group settings.

Teaching music is a fantastic merge of my two passions in life. I perform regularly in my church congregation, and can also play the piano and trombone. I am currently learning how to play the organ. I have participated in several large orchestras and have taken private professional lessons for 20 of my 24 years of playing.

I have a very flexible and casual style of teaching. I get to know the student
and their (if applicable) parents, and then tailor lessons to fit their needs. That means I am willing to teach in my home, at your home, or online. I am also willing to use toys and games for very young students who are wiggly.

Perfect practice makes perfect playing. I believe in starting with form and care of the instrument, and then moving into theory right away. Unless their is a recital or perform coming up, I prefer to spend up to 20-40% of a lesson on music theory. This will ultimately lead to a more well rounded musician and allow for greater creativity as a mature musician.
