About Desiree
I'm excited to be a TakeLessons instructor and to be able to share my experience and knowledge with you. I have been a singer and performer for over 20 years and have taught voice and beginning piano for over 12 years.

I received a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. I continued my studies in New York City in voice, acting and diction.

I continue to be an active performer specializing in musical theater, opera and concert. I began my professional career as an apprentice with the Portland Opera in Oregon. My love for music has taken me across the U.S. and around the world. I come to Pittsburgh via Memphis, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Portland, New York City, ports around the globe through Cunard Cruise L
ines, San José, and Chattanooga.

Currently, I can be seen performing the first Tuesday of each month with Aria412 at Wallace's at Hotel Indigo. I especially enjoy new music and have premiered new works with Pittsburgh Festival Opera, Alia Musica and the New Dischord Festival. The most exciting premiere was the title role in Eve Apart by composer Tim Hinck and my husband, which was produced both in Chattanooga and Pittsburgh. My favorite operatic role is Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute and I have had the pleasure of singing it with Undercroft Opera, Opera San Jose, West Bay Opera, Stockton Opera, Pocket Opera and as a Resident Artist at Portland Opera.

I premiered the role of Flora Dart in A New Kind of Fallout by composer Gilda Lyons and playwright Tammy Ryan with the Pittsburgh Festival Opera. That same season I portrayed Joe Boyd in PFO's gender bending Damn Yankees. Other theatrical performances include Roselinda in Die Fledermaus with Undercroft Opera, Despina in Cosi fan tutte with Mission City Opera, Blonde in Abduction from the Seraglio with Pocket Opera, Cunegonde in Candide with Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., and Rosa Bud in The Mystery of Edwin Drood with Chattanooga Theater Center. I have appeared as Abigail in The Crucible, Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Lucy in Threepenny Opera and Celeste #1 in Sunday in the Park with George.

As a soloist with Pittsburgh's new music ensemble Alia Musica, I premiered Kierkegaard's Pantoum by composer David Lidov, was soprano soloist in Shadow in the Hot Sun by Paris-based composer Nissim Schaul and Al Vacio by composer Federico Garcia, a work she premiered at the inaugural New Dischord Festival in Chattanooga. I created the role of Pamela in the premier of TOOWHOPERA by composer Sorrel Hays in Rome, GA.

I was named a world finalist in the Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition, a regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, a semi-finalist in the Jenny Lind Competition and a regional winner in the MacAllister Competition.

Angela is extremely knowledgeable in all things voice and instrument. She is very talented in both singing and teaching. I took voice lessons from her & I can say I learned so much about technique, breathing, & how to care for my vocals. Angela taught me to embrace my range & love my voice. Extensive experience starring in touring theater productions since age 12.

About Detrece
DeTrece "Dee" Lavender is a native of Miami, Florida. When her family moved to Sarasota, she was afforded the opportunity to study music and the performing arts as a student of the Westcoast School/Henry L. Porter School of Music. It was then that Dee began to understand the power of the creative arts as an effective form of emotional expression and release. By middle school, DeTrece began fine tuning her natural talents by studying classical voice which earned her several starring roles in the Sarasota Youth Opera, The Aslo Theater and the Players Theater. She is also a proud former member of the Westcoast Black Theater Troop in Sarasota, FL. Under the caring leadership of these opportunities, she was able to combine musical and life experiences in order to offer a more well rounded educational and musical experience for her students.

She was awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where she received a dual Bachelor of Music degree in Music Therapy and Vocal Performance (Class of 2003). It was through her service as a music therapist, Millieu (residential) counselor and music teacher in the Boston City Public Schools/Greater Boston Metropolitan Area, that she began to feel the call toward a greater understanding of the gravity and role of the socio-emotional needs of students (and their families/villages) in urban settings. This call brought her to Baltimore, MD where she enrolled in the Pastoral Counseling Masters of Science program at Loyola University. In addition to her studies, she currently teaches Elementary and Middle School choir/ Musicianship teacher in the Baltimore City Public Schools through the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's OrchKids Program. She also serves as Minister Of Music and Arts at two local churches.

About Sally
Greetings! I'm an enthusiastic teacher who makes learning fun, as evidenced by the fact that most of my students stay for years! I have taught over 150 students from six school districts in the South and West Hills of Pittsburgh, along with students from Bishop Canevin, OLSH, and CAPA.

I build on a solid foundation of good technique to help you achieve your vocal goals. I work to instill a love of music and provide compassion for the whole person, while working to bring out the very best that your voice can be!

I offer the study of musical theory as an option for interested students. Music theory is highly recommended for any student who wishes to major in music, or music-related fields of study, such as music therapy.

I have a varied background, musically speaking. I started in community theater at age 12, and entered coll
ege with one of my majors being Theater. I switched to Vocal Performance and studied opera with Claudia Pinza.

I have always used my music in my church. For most of my adult life, this has meant a contemporary Christian music setting, being a worship leader for our church's worship team, directing and fronting a full band. I can help to develop you as an effective worship leader, in addition to being a solid worship vocalist.

My former students include professional actors, opera students, and a Best Actor and Best Actress award winner at the Gene Kelly Awards for High School Musical Theater.

And parents, you can rest easier, knowing that I have my PA Background Clearances. I teach in my in-home studio. The studio has glass doors, so your student is always visible. Parents may sit in on any lesson; they're also welcome to wait in my living room, right outside the studio room. My home is conveniently located 10 minutes from Waterdam Plaza on Route 19, in McMurray, PA.

Do you have a voice? Then you can learn to sing! I'm a professional singer with four records out and one on the way. I enjoy working with singers who are in the process of finding their voice. Perhaps you've been told (falsely) or grew up believing that you "can't" sing. We will work on ear training to learn how to find pitch, and will work on emotional connection with the material to find vocal self-expression that is authentic, compelling, and most of all, unique to YOU! Since I play piano and guitar, I can accompany you while you learn your favorite songs. I look forward to making music with you!

Sara :)

About Sara
I'm a professional musician, singer, songwriter, and recording artist. I have released three records and have been signed to Nettwerk Records and Secret Road Music. My songs have been featured on Grey's Anatomy and in a national Chevy commercial, which ran during the Winter Olympics. My main instruments are piano, guitar, and of course, vocals.

I have been teaching music for almost two decades, having started as an elementary school music teacher. Since that time, between recording and touring with my band, I have developed a thriving teaching career working privately with students of all ages, from as young as 4 years old, to adults, and everything in between.

While I'm currently a pop and folk songwriter, my early training is in classical piano, so I greatly enjoy teaching students to read music and to play classical pieces. How
ever, many students come to me simply wanting to accompany themselves singing contemporary songs or pop and jazz standards -- or even learn to compose their own songs! For this approach, I use a tried and true method of fingering techniques and scales, chord patterns and shapes, and ear training. In this case, reading notes is not necessary, and you will quickly progress over only a few months to playing simple arrangements of popular songs of your choice.

Students who come to my house in the Hollywood Hills will find a welcoming, creative home teaching studio and will enjoy a reduced class rate. Traveling to you will be a bit more. Online classes are always an option. I look forward to guiding you - or your child - on a new and exciting musical adventure that will last a lifetime!

See you soon :),
Sara
