I can help you with everything from traditional classical repertoire to modern world, folk, jazz, and improvisation. Students of all skill levels are welcome. I tailor the lesson type to the student rather than use a cookie-cutter approach.

About Nicholas
I am a second generation music teacher for piano and violin. I have been teaching for over 15 years as well as playing both instruments for about 30 years. I have an Associates in Music. Making lessons both fun and educational is what make my students successful in their instruments. My lessons are custom made to how the student learns, not cookie-cut. We also do bi-annual recitals in October and April to showcase the students' accomplishments.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are both fun and educational at the same time. I compromise with my students by having us each pick a piece to play on top of the usual learning pieces. My students play anything from Katy Perry to 80s music and rock ballads and in between. I use John Thompson and Fingerpower as well as a notespeller for piano and String Essentials for violin. Many of m
y students can play with both hands after six months. We do recitals each year to showcase the past year's achievements in their pieces.

*** Travel Equipment ***
For either instrument I pick up all books and supplies ahead of the lesson. I have my own violin and music stand that I use to assist in teaching.

*** Specialties ***
John Thompson, Suzuki, popular music, Gospel, New Age, and anything in between

Want to learn violin? My students have unique lessons tailored to their needs and own personal goals. Basic skills and advanced techniques are taught alongside music interpretation and expression, as well as basic music history, music theory, and other tools necessary to make informed performance decisions. What do you want to learn? Tell me and we can discover it together!

About Calvin
As a classical trained violist with orchestral, chamber, and solo performance experience, my teaching style is geared towards performance and expression. I don't adhere to any one book of teaching, adjusting my teaching to the unique needs of each student. My teachers came from different pedagogical backgrounds; as a result, I have a wide array of teaching tools available to pass on to my students. I have taught with the Longy School of Music's El Sistema program and had a Teaching Artist residence with Cambridge Public Schools. I hold a BM in Viola performance from the Lamont School of Music and a MM in Viola Performance from the Longy School of Music.

I have played viola since I first began my musical studies at age 9. As a result, I have seen teachers hold viola students back, simply because they play the "lesser" instrument in the
viola family. I do not hold my students back and I hold them all to the same high level of playing, regardless of which instrument they play.

I've never had any experience with orchestral instruments before. After one lesson with Calvin, I'm learning to read music again. He showed me proper technique as well. I feel that I will be progressing quickly under Calvin's instruction. My first lesson flew by, and I learned so much in a very short amount of time. His attention to smaller details in technique are very helpful as well. I absolutely recommend Calvin as a viola instructor!

First lesson was an excellent experience. I did not have a violin and prior to my first lesson, Nikita took me to several places to select a violin and a bow. This was invaluable to me. I love my violin and Nikita helped me get a very good price, more than 35% less than the listed price and about 40% less than what I had budgeted. He tried the violins at the places we went and people would stop what they were doing and watch and listen to his playing. It was so beautiful. I plan to have Nikita as my teacher for years to come.

A+. He is very professional and takes his time to make sure you understand the lesson. He pays very close attention to the details to make sure you do not learn or continue to use bad habits. His teaching method is very impressive. He makes sure that you know why you are doing something and not just memorizing chords. He puts theory into the lesson so you understand why you are doing something rather than just memorizing chords. I'm on my 6th lesson and I only know 6 chords that I learned on my own. But my wife is an accomplished pianist, my kids plays piano, trombone and saxophone and my.wife and kids teachers says he is teaching the correct way. Anyone can remember a chord and strum strings but once you understand how the guitar works and what it means to move from string to string on different frets than you are way ahead if the game. I highly recommend Nikita.

Learning an instrument is the most effective way to improve yourself. No matter if for a hobby or seeking a career, playing an instrument helps shaping your connections with yourself and others. With over 15 years of experience performing and over 10 years teaching students aging from 5 to 85 years old, I learned the most important surviving skill in our times, how to connect.
During lesson time we will approach technical aspects of the instrument, such as bow hold, sound production, intonation, developing dexterity in the left hand, and so on. Also, the phrasing, music making, repertoire development, and interpretation. Even though our lessons are specific developed for the instrument, music theory and ear training are important subjects to be addressed as well.
If you are looking for a constructive hobby for yourself or your kids, or you would like to put that forgotten instrument in use again, we will work with you to make this one of the most enjoyable experiences possible.

Jaime is currently teaching at the Pease Conservatory in midtown, at her home, and in the homes of her students. She holds a degree in violin performance from the New England Conservatory of Boston and then received a Fulbright to Athens. Alongside her career in Greece as a musician, she taught numerous private students and held individual and group classes in elementary and music schools. Jaime believes that good chemistry between teacher and student is the most important base for learning. Beyond this, she teaches her students the tools to practice on their own, keeps things simple while encouraging progress, to hold the violin and bow correctly while keeping the body relaxed, but most of all, to keep humor and fun in the lessons! About Jaime
Jaime Smith began her formal Classical Violin Performance studies with William Barbini (Concert-master, Sacramento Symphony) at California State University, Sacramento. She then continued her studies with Malcolm Lowe (Concert-master, Boston Symphony) and Eric Rosenblith (String Department Chair, N.E.C.) at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where she graduated with a degree in Violin Performance. In 1999 Jaime was the first musician to be granted a Fulbright Scholarship to Greece to study its traditional music. She attended the National Conservatory and the Athens Conservatory with Kyriakos Gouventas. She spent 17 years performing all over Greece and Cyprus and California with celebrated artists. She has performed countless times on Greek and Cypriot television and radio. In 2007 she formed the music trio Hohlax and since t

Along with her performances and events in California she has held performance seminars at California State University, Sacramento and University of California, Davis. She continues to organize tours for her trio, and she also performs up and down the coast.
Jaime was “Solfege Assistant” for the Solfege Department at N.E.C., and believes in the teaching of solfege to her violin students to be fundamental, empowering and extremely helpful. She has seen progress in those students who chose to add solfege to their lessons in these ways: faster understanding and recognition of musical intervals, a stronger understanding of rhythm and the important ability of the student to hear the melody in their head before playing. Solfege is encouraged but optional.
