About Robert
It is my experience that no matter what kind of music you end up playing a solid classical piano background is invaluable. I was privately trained in classical piano from the ages 5 - 17 in Los Angeles, California. My teachers were Mary Brady, Mae Gilbert Reese and Jeane Weiss. I graduated from Ha

I only had the pleasure of taking piano lessons with Robert for two months since I got into Harvard and had to move to the East Coast, but I can confidently attest that he is a phenomenal teacher. To begin with, Robert brings to the table not only his classical training but also an open, creative, out-of-the-box approach. He is extremely knowledgeable and seasons lessons with fantastic facts about composers and pieces which makes everything a lot more interesting and memorable. lessons are versatile and designed to develop several key skills simultaneously. I never really played the piano before but after only two months with Robert I could read notes, develop my technique and actually play two beautiful pieces! If you are looking for a well-rounded, brilliant, cool teacher - search no more.

He currently teaches piano to my 12 year old daughter. Beyond the technical skills, what makes Jeff different than most teachers is his complete customized / personalized approach. In the world of education, a hot topic is how every student is different and the trend towards personalized learning plans. Jeff actually lives this philosophy. During his first meeting, he spent 30 minutes with me (the parent and person who is paying) understanding my desires, and he spent another 30 minutes with my daughter, understanding her goals and motivations. He then developed an approach that keeps my daughter engaged and motivated, no easy task for a 12 year old with ADD/ADHD.
He mixes teaching traditional piano theory with using modern technology (GarageBand) to create music, as well as focusing on he learning songs that she enjoys (pop music.) The curriculum that my daughter is following is 100% tailored to her.... there is no set music book that she is working her way through. Her practice time usually involves her making recordings of new pieces she is trying to create, as well as working on playing songs she likes. He is positive and builds her up during lessons, while also managing to be honest with her when she hasn't lived up to expectations (not so much about her skills, but about her following through on practice time commitments.)
Jeff's personality is great - easy for both parent and daughter to get along. I listen to my daughter during the lesson and she is engaged, which is the #1 goal. From my end, Jeff is priced appropriately for an in-home teacher, he is flexible when scheduling issues arise, and he communicates with me very well (usually texting for simple issues, and phone calls for more in-depth talks.)
Note: if your goal is a straightforward, traditional "skill and drill" teacher - where your child will learn the scales but be bored and hate piano - then Jeff is NOT your teacher. If your goal is to have your child engaged and enjoying the process of learning, and perhaps fall in love with music/piano along the way, and progress at his/her own pace, then you should definitely give Jeff a try!
Jeff is the fifth piano teacher my daughter has had in the past three years and he is by far the best, as measured by my daughter's engagement and enjoyment. We have had a variety of different styles (including skill & drill, rock n' roll, traditional, etc) and we finally found the right fit for my daughter. Last year she had a traditional teacher -- she learned a lot, she progressed a lot, and she hated every minute of it....begging me not to make her continue. This year with Jeff, the process is entirely different, the lessons and practice time is entirely different, the pace is entirely different (not quicker or slower....just different) and the love of music has returned to my daughter!
Will she become a professional piano player? I have no idea. Does she run to the door when Jeff arrives (versus hide in her closet which she did last year)? Yes, she does. For us, that is success and that is directly tied to Jeff being a great teacher.
I highly recommend him."
