A 'good ear' is very important to any musician. It can help guide a musician through difficult musical passages and support their music reading. Ear training teaches musicians to play in tune which is especially important when playing in ensembles. Ear training is essential to improvised music especially with jazz, rock, Latin, and funk. Ultimately, a good ear is useful for transcribing and learning music otherwise unavailable in written form.

Although Vince is an excellent reader, he has an even stronger ear (which attributes to his aptitude for learning multiple instruments). Through studying and performing jazz, he's developed and tuned his ear. Vince also relies on his ear by transcribing music for the bands' of which he is a member.

Ear training is important for every musician regardless of instrument. Vince will teach how to recognize the elements of music including rhythms, intervals, melody, harmony, scales, and form. He will demonstrate how proper ear training ...

About Vince
“Basically he’s the go-to cross-genre horn-blowing utility man of the Philly scene” (John Vettese, The Key). Vince is a professional trumpeter, arranger, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. Though firmly rooted in jazz, he is comfortable with a wide variety of genres including rock, soul, funk, folk, classical, and electronic.

Vince’s original music has been described as “a contemporary instance of fusion done right” (Matthew Aquilin, All About Jazz). His next album, The Nook, is a full length straight-ahead jazz album featuring John Swana. The music harks back to Miles Davis' first great quintet. The Nook was preceded by Sound Plan (2017), Live at PafA (2017), Syzygy (2014), and Syzygy: Remix (2014). Vince is currently self producing four more solo albums. One unreleased composition was recently featured in the Philadelphia Real Book
Volume 1.

Vince has appeared as a side man on 40+ albums. He is the trumpeter and arranger with the York Street Hustle, the John Byrne Band, and You Do You. Vince founded the Philly Phatness horn section, which has recorded with regional, national, and international artists, and on film soundtracks. He serves as Musical Director and bassist for Phloyd: a Philadelphia Pink Floyd tribute band. "His horn croons and wahs with touches of funk or blues, bridging the futuristic digital age with a snazzy sense of classic cool" (Geno Thackara, All About Jazz).

Vince earned the Masters of Music degree in Jazz Performance from the University of the Arts; and earned the Bachelor of Science in Music degree concentrating in Jazz Studies and Theory & Composition from the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz. He studied trumpet through undergraduate and graduate school with Rebecca Coupe Franks, Dennis Wasko, and John Swana. Vince has also attended master classes held by Randy Brecker, Matt Gallagher, Craig Morris, Claudio Roditi, Malcolm McNab, Scott Holbert, Jeffrey Curnow, and Alison Balsom.

Vince first began teaching music in 2006 as the trumpet instructor at Silver Creek Central School. He directed trumpet master classes for high school students. Vince later took on various private students teaching trumpet, guitar, electric bass, improvisation, arrangement and composition. While earning his Master of Music at the University of the Arts, he served as the trumpet department intern and was responsible for teaching private trumpet lessons, preparing transcriptions for class materials and live performances, and proctoring music theory exams.

Also at UArts, Vince was a teaching assistant for the Freshman Jazz Improvisation class for which he conducted sectionals, administered exams, and offered critiques regarding inventiveness of improvisations. In 2017 he taught a jazz improvisation masterclass at Schenectady County Community College. Vince privately teaches trumpet, electric bass guitar, ear training, music theory, improvisation, arrangement, and composition to students of all ages and levels.

Since each student approaches music differently; I tailor my teaching to fit their approach. I ask each student, "What do you want to accomplish?" Together, we set short and long term goals. I believe a strong technical foundation leads to freer ease of artistic expression. My students receive a wholistic approach to music applicable to whatever instrument they choose.

Vince continually pursues work performing, arranging, composing, teaching and recording original music.

Quotes:

"Vince proves himself a very creative composer. I look forward to hearing more from this upcoming composer & instrumentalist." (Fred "Rock Steady Freddie" Reiter)

"Vince plays his horn with creative passion and soul, his tone is very open and full these two combined make him one of the leading up and coming young jazz trumpet players of today." (Rebecca Coupe Franks)

"I've had the great pleasure of working with Vince as an arranger and writer. His music explores many styles and directions, and is always well crafted. He has an original and distinctive voice as a player, an arranger, and a writer. Such dedicated talent deserves to be heard, and I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot from Vince in the future." About Tim
I earned my master’s degree in jazz studies from The University of the Arts. As adjunct professor of music at Lebanon Valley College, I teach double bass, bass guitar, jazz improvisation, and directs small-group jazz combos. Working with students of all ages, I also teach workshops, clinics, and master classes at high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools in Pennsylvania and Maryland, as well as keeping a private teaching studio out of my Bucks County home.

Lessons are available on upright bass, electric bass, improvisation, music theory, and ear training at all ability levels and all ages, from absolute beginners to high school students preparing for college auditions to adults. Some of my students have been accepted to various regional orchestras and jazz bands, and I'm very proud of their hard work.

While having an outl
ined curriculum to develop my students’ technique, reading, and knowledge of theory, I cater to their interests by showing them how to apply what the are learning to the music that they already know and love.

David is a very skilled drummer and a very enthusiastic teacher. In lessons, he seems to like to split time between practicing rudiments and learning to play different rhythms on the set. He is also exceptionally patient and supportive with my 9-year-old, highly distractible daughter. David is very positive, pointing out things that are going well and interesting rhythms that they discover. I am really glad we found David--he is an excellent teacher and I love watching my daughter learn so much about music!

This is the class where you learn about intervals, singing and hearing pitches, solfeggio, and gain an understanding of music. Ear training goes hand in hand with music theory.

About Lori
Hello! Thank you for your interest in my profile.
I teach piano, horn, trumpet, theory & ear training, and coach ensembles, performance class as well as music and movement class for ages 0-6, and drum circle and cultural literacy for adults.

I am a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, and I've played all over the world. I've played with soloists from Frank Sinatra to Diana Ross, Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons to Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo. I still perform and consider this important to my teaching as well.

Some major accomplishments include an invitation to the White House, over 50 solo performances with orchestras starting with The Philadelphia Orchestra at age 15, a performance for the Princess of Thailand, and early television performances starting at age 7. In order to accomplish these things, I had great teach
ers, a regimen of discipline and practice, an expectation I have of my students, and all the rewards that have lasted a lifetime. Properly taught music lessons are life lessons and are never a waste. I incorporate fun into the lessons as discipline and fun must be combined for success and enjoyment at all levels.

My teachers included Eleanor Sokoloff, Susan Starr, and Dale Clevenger.

I've taught for 29 years, and have a proven track record of success. I've taught at Universities including The University of Notre Dame, The University of Tennessee, The Chinese University and the Academy of Performing Arts in Hong Kong. I adore my students. Each one needs to be assessed and taught differently. Something you cannot learn in school, only through years of experience!

I teach in Avondale-Kennet Square-Chaddsford, Bryn Mawr-Villanova, PA, Hockessin-Wilmington,, DE, Newark, DE, and Cherry Hill, NJ with possibility of travel 10 minutes away. Please note: If you want in home piano lessons, you need a reasonably high quality instrument, and must maintain the tuning. I have perfect pitch and it will be crucial to me.

While I had previous experience playing an instrument MANY years ago, I never played the piano and started taking lessons with Lori as an adult. In almost no time I was able to read the bass clef (left hand) notes and within the year I had learned all the scales (majors and relative minors - both harmonic and melodic) and arpeggios (root and inversions). I was also playing "real" pieces of music.

Lori stresses good technique and good practice habits and can suggest more than one way to master a concept. She also makes learning the piano fun.

Ear Training is a fundamental part of being a musician, and any work done in ear training will help nurture all aspects of our inner musicianship. These lessons will focus on what the student needs most, and can include harmonic and melodic dictation, analysis, and sight singing.

About Erik
Pianist, music director, and vocal coach, Erik was born and raised in Eastern Washington state. As a solo pianist, he has been heard all across the northwest and beyond, in cities including Seattle, Portland, Tacoma, NYC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Philadelphia, and internationally in Prague and Salzburg. Erik has been a guest artist at Whitman College, Portland State University, The Kairos Chamber Music Lyceum, California State University Summer Arts, the West Seattle Symphony, and the Gig-Harbor Peninsula Symphony Orchestra. In addition to performing, Erik’s passion for teaching has led him to be an adjudicator for various festivals including the Washington Sonata-Sonatina Festival and the Washington Regional Solo and Ensemble Festival.

Erik most recently served as the Music Director for the National Tour of Kander and Ebb's tim
eless musical Cabaret. This production was on tour from December 2017 through May 2018 all across North America. Broadway.com's review praised the musicianship of the show, "Musical director Erik Flaten's musicians are impressive in their dexterity: At one moment, they are providing rich interpretations of the memorable John Kander score, while perhaps at the next they are playing denizens of the Kit Kat Klub or neighborhood thugs, wastrels and other folks of questionable repute. Flaten and his band are given their own richly deserved moments in the spotlight at the top of Act Two and the music director himself is given the well-earned final bow at the end of the curtain call."

Erik currently resides in Philadelphia, where he coaches and plays for a diverse range of singers. In addition to coaching and playing, Erik works as Music Director for musical theater, manages a private studio, and serves as Artistic Director of the Media Performing Arts Series. Previous successes include performances with mezzo-soprano, Angela Niederloh and baritone, Matthew Hayward in Portland, and a performance of the Grieg piano concerto with the West Seattle Symphony. Upcoming engagements on the East Coast include collaborative work with with soprano, Leah Golub.

Students of Erik have the opportunities to perform in studio recitals and workshops.

Ellen is awesome. I am a total beginner and perfectionist so I don't tend to do well with learning something new in front of another person. I grow easily frustrated when I don't pick things up quickly and easily and get embarrassed when I make mistakes. Ellen makes the lessons super comfortable for me and I leave having learned something new every time. I have a LONG way to go but I can see where this can lead and plan to stick with it. She knows how to make music and an instrument make sense to someone with no background in music which is very helpful for me. I plan to stick with her for a long time!

I took 10 lessons with a different teach last summer and ended my package not being able to read sheet music or find my finger placement on the strings without second thought.

I have had just 3 lessons with Ellen thus far, and am reading sheet music like a wiz and gaining more and more confidence each lesson with my finger placement and now bowing.

Ellen has a wonderful system of teaching that truly makes everything she exposes you to stick, and has been getting me very excited to continue on knowing that I am in good hands and will progress quickly because of it. I will most definitely continue to see Ellen.

Even if you feel like you're totally tone-deaf, my method of ear training can help you learn how to hear different harmonies, rhythms, and intervals so you can feel more confident about your ear.

About Elijah
I am a professional jazz guitarist and pianist, with years of experience performing and teaching on both instruments. I recently graduated from Temple University in 3 years with a degree in jazz performance, where I studied with jazz legends such as Peter Bernstein and Mike Moreno. However, my lessons aren't just jazz specific! I have a lot of experience performing in other styles - rock, R&B/funk, pop, etc. Whatever your musical goals are, I can help you reach them. Gifted with perfect pitch, I can teach you easy to remember tactics to identify keys, chords, and intervals. It can reach the point after hearing a melody or chorus for the first time, you will be able to play it on any instrument by ear!

About Zack
I am a professional composer for video games and film! I created the company, Moving Dimensions, in 2014 and have been producing and writing music for my own video games ever since.

I've been writing music ever since I was old enough to hold a pencil. After 19 years of perfecting my craft, I want to pass on the information I have learned. I double majored in music composition and music theory from the University of Louisville in 2012.

I began my teaching career right out of high school, I arranged music for, and instructed marching band percussion students. A few years later, I moved onto writing music for, teaching, and directing musical theater. All while giving private lessons in composition and piano on the side. I then spent 6 years in Los Angeles, writing for the big screen and getting my own video game production company off
the ground. I learned a tremendous amount working with film and musical directors out there, and when the company became self-sustaining, I moved close to family in PA.

Because of my enthusiasm for music, by excellent communication skills, and overwhelming amount of patience, I can teach you to become an expert on music composition, arranging, orchestration, music theory, playing things by ear, the piano, any percussion instrument, and even improvisation! I'm very fluent in all styles of music, from R&B and jazz to classical and contemporary. Reach out today and schedule a lesson! Let's play music!
