Bill G.

Troy, MI

About Bill

I've been playing for 29 years, and teaching for 22. I’m both a professional musician/songwriter; as well as a professional, experienced, and diverse guitar instructor.
I teach all styles; from finger picking classical and flamenco guitar, to all rock(from classic to indie), jazz, world music styles, etc. I also teach bass; as well as Mediterranean instruments such as the Greek Bouzouki. All ages are welcome.
Some insight into my teaching method: I teach sight reading notation, and all general theory; as well as general guitar tab; from the simplest songs for young students, to complex cla
ssical guitar and jazz improvisation.
I started playing at 12 years old, have won numerous awards; locally and nationally; and have written and recorded in a wide variety of styles. I also front Detroit based indie fusion trio The Static Dial; as guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter. We’ve been featured on radio and publications from our hometown to the UK, and we've worked with several national and international touring bands.
Music samples are available here on my profile.

*** Lesson Details ***
As an instructor, I start students with the basics (open chords, major/minor diatonic and blues scales, rhythm/timing, and beginner technique), and like to get at least a basic ability to sight read (music notation).

For younger students, I get them started on a beginner book for sight reading music; and simple/basic songs to start with and build up their ability.

If a student is a little more capable, we start on a more modern/popular song they like. For my more advanced students, we get into music theory (cycle of fifths, harmony, chord language, etc.) and with some students we study specific genres.

My approach is one of building up a student's self confidence; and ultimately making learning fun. I take teaching seriously and value my student's time; so I work to get the most out of them, and to make their lessons worth while. All ages and levels are welcome!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio space in Helen's of Troy. Office is furnished with seating, music stand, and amplifier.
Student must have their own instrument and pick.

*** Specialties ***
I'm a singer/songwriter as well as a guitar player/instructor, so the construction and arranging of a song; from the music to the lyrics; are very much within my experience and teaching.

Karen S.

Waterford, MI

About Karen

I have experience teaching both beginning and intermediate piano and beginning voice. I enjoy working with students of all ages and helping them develop as musicians. I am patient and understanding and believe that students need to feel comfortable with a teacher to optimize the learning experience.

I studied private piano into my high school years and studied organ and voice in college where I was a vocal soloist. I attended Concordia College, Ann Arbor, Mi and received my BA in Music Education from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa

I have accompanied both Middle Scho
ol and High School Choirs and instrumentalists, played organ and directed church choirs. I currently play organ in two churches and direct a Middle School Choir Chime group. I enjoy working with students in large group settings as well as one on one. I have been teaching with Take Lessons for almost two years. Sharing music is a great joy.

I especially love playing keyboard because of its expressive nature, the soft and loud, the sweetly and the contemplative. It brings me pleasure especially when a challenging piece has been mastered.

*** Lesson Details ***
I attempt to adapt lessons so each student can be successful. A variety of curriculum is used based on student's needs and the basic curriculum is supplemented with additional material to reinforce the lessons being taught. Each piano lesson begins with reviewing material from the previous lesson and then learning new pieces, including technique and theory as appropriate to the music. Voice lessons begin with warm-ups and vocalizes including solfege and sight-reading and them moving into learning a piece of music to perform.. Practicing is an essential part of the learning process. Students are given practical ideas on how to make practicing more effective and enjoyable.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Family Room: piano, couches and chair, room for parents to wait for students in lesson area or in living room

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students need to provide a piano or organ in a quiet place free of distractions. I will bring other materials needed, instruction books, pitch pipe for singing, etc.

Very professional and pleasant, but behind in technology

We feel like Karen is a wonderful person, pleasant, and very nice. However, she is rather old fashioned in her teaching, which is fine for some, just not us! Her technology is behind, so learning newer music and practice for newer shows, etc, is very difficult. If we were learning to read music and play the piano, Karen would be great, I am sure.

Very good

Too soon to evaluate as I have had a limited number of lessons.
Everything is going well, however, I do have to drive quite a distance to get there, which is a negative.

This has been a WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE!

Karen is GREAT! She keeps my daughter focused and she is getting better with every lesson. My daughter has a a habit of playing to fast and Karen does not scold her for this but she gives her positive feedback and tells her how she is getting better and it has made a big difference.

Heather P.

Utica, MI

About Heather

I love teaching, simply love teaching! I teach students of all ages. I teach piano, voice, clarinet, and saxophone. I have taught for over 25 years. My students have lots of opportunities for performance, if they choose to. We perform at Nursing Homes, Retirements, Festival of Trees, and Seasonal Recitals. There are at least 2 recitals a year, 1 at Christmas and 1 in the Spring, if enough participation, we often have one in summer with a party afterward. We also participate in the Michigan Music Association competition. I have also had students perform in Disney World in Florida!!! I
have been in many musicals such as Annie, Gypsy, Rock Around the Clock. I have put on solo recitals. I am a member of my church choir. My students and I have fun while we are learning music! It is the best job ever.

*** Lesson Details ***
I use a variety of curriculum, which includes classical, broadway, some pop, new age, and jazz. After 3 to 6 months you will have a basic understanding of your instrument and will be ready to take off! I do ask students to keep track of your practicing so you can see your progress.

For piano:
I use the Alfred Basic Books for beginners and then we move to the Keith Snell books along with other supplemental books. If a student already is using a book, generally we will finish that book up so they won't have to purchase another set of books.

For Saxophone and Clarinet:
I use the Rubank books along with other supplemental books

For Voice:
I use the 24 Italian Songs and Arias, The Young Singer, and various Broadway books. Any pop music must be purchased by student as there is just way too much to chose from for me to have a lot of it.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home Studio: in living room with 2 pianos at entrance of house. Seating is available as well toys and a table for siblings.

*** Specialties ***
Voice - Classical & Broadway
Piano - classical
Clarinet - classical and pop
Saxophone - classical, pop, and some jazz

Jim is not only creative in his own work, but also incredibly inspiring. As a young composer who worked with him for almost two years, I can personally say Jim is as great a teacher as he is a composer. He can work with any type of music and is always energetic in his approach to teaching. He also integrates theory into his lessons and works to help you grow both as a composer and musician. My compositions developed and grew in my time with Jim as I'm sure anyone else's will as well. I would absolutely recommend Jim as a teacher and mentor.

Michelle L.

Rochester, MI

About Michelle

Music:
I'm studying music education at Wayne State University and I've been teaching students for a few years, but started as a paid teacher in June 2013. I teach a 5 year old basic piano and music reading.
I am both a woodwind and brass player; I started as a clarinet/bass clarinet player, then I switched to horn in high school and have played flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium and tuba. I started as a clarinet player back in September of 2006 and as a horn player in January of 2011. Horn is my primary instrument now, but I also played clarinet and saxophone in
pit orchestras.
I am an active player in the Wayne State University Bands and the Rochester College Concert Band.

German:
I graduated high school in 2013 with five years of German studies. My senior year, I took Advanced Placement German, and took the test for college credit. I made a friend/ pen pal in 2006 from Germany who has helped me through my years of study. I would love to be able to help those who either need to fill a graduation requirement or are just trying to learn a language and are struggling. I am now pursuing a minor in German.

Other:
Along with studying full time at Wayne State University, I am a certified caregiver. I currently use this certification to work with children with Autism. Children with special needs give me a challenge to teach, but I love the challenge and love the kids.
