*** Lesson Details ***
Every lesson is about you.
The first lesson you tell me about yourself and what you would like to learn. I will hear you and tell you some feedback. We go at your pace, but you will only progress as much as you put time into learning.

A typical voice lesson will include warm-ups, explanation of vocal physiology, any corrections, and perfecting any songs we've been working on. Later, we will work on diction and interpretation. We develop goals together.

A piano lesson is a little different. The first lesson I do an evaluation of how much you as a pianist already know. After we determine your level, lessons will include games, art, music history, and of course lots of piano playing!

For younger children 5 and under, I offer a "musical readiness" class. This class includes rhythm, movement, singing, piano, instruments, and aural skills. I use a curriculum designed for children 6 months to 5 years called Music Together. I'm a trained MYC Piano teacher and can teacher piano to ages 3 and up.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lesson: upright piano, keyboards, seating for parents

4 other rooms: Separate room for parents with younger children. Toys and open space to relax while waiting for the student to finish lessons.

*** Specialties ***
I am familiar with the Harmony Road Curriculum, Alfred's Basic, MYC, and Music Together and several other various techniques, lessons, and theory books. I also designed my own voice class curriculum. If you want to learn a different instrument such as guitar, bass, ukulele, or something else, please let me know!

My specialty is in operatic singing, but I've studied musical theater and pop voice as well. I've also had a lot of ensemble experience, including musicals, operas, and choirs.

I'm excellent at helping people prepare for auditions. I will also tell you whether or not its a good idea to audition for something. If you are not ready, I don't think it is ethical of me to waste your time.

Michael J.

Visalia, CA

About Michael

I have been involved in music all of my life. As a child I played trumpet in band and sang in school and church choirs. My favorite movies were musicals and they still are my favorite. Music was my ma
jor in college, which included singing, dancing, acting and playing musical instruments. I like all types of music. As a school teacher, I taught 3rd. grade through high school, everything from band and choir to musical theater. I also taught private students, of all ages, piano, guitar, voice and most of the wind instruments.

*** Lesson Details ***
My students can expect to learn the basics of music theory, such as melody, harmony, key signature and rhythm. I want my students to have fun by learning the kind of music they like best while learning to appreciate the kind of music that will develop their musical skills. Piano books like John Schaum and guitar books like Mel Bay's Guitar Method are good books to learn to read music and learn the proper way to play your instrument. Scale exercises are important for instrumental, as well as, vocal students. I use a practice log and CD-DVD recordings of my students so they can see and hear their progress. At the end of 6 months I want my students to play their favorite songs in 3 different keys. C, G and F Major.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Designated music room: Two keyboards, guitars, sound equipment, PA system, computers, seating for parents (he encourages it!)

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students need their own inst. I have one of every inst. to demo. except piano and guitar which I have 2 of each.

*** Specialties ***
Open-minded to all music. I specialize in performance. I help my students with their look, as well as, their sound. I know how to bring out the best in my students.

It’s one thing to have the gift of teaching music, which Michael does. It’s another, entirely, to be able to relate to young students in a way that fires them up and keeps them excited.

We couldn't be happier with Michael. His passion and expertise are what you'd want from a teacher (clarinet + guitar), but beyond this, he's a kind, patient man who really took the effort to reach my son outside of just the lesson. This made a huge difference when it comes to keeping my son engaged.

Diane B.

Fresno, CA

About Diane

My degrees are in psychology (BA) and law (JD). Studying psychology, I learned that children have learning styles related to their personalities. For instance, children with high levels of energy seem
to learn better when actively engaged as they learn, and more introverted children don't like to be put on the spot, but they do want their teacher's attention and they enjoy interaction with one person at a time. I also learned that categorizing concepts helps with memorization, which is how I scored at the 94th percentile on the Verbal section of the GRE, plus I've learned some tricks for performing complex calculations quickly. I've taught Reading and Math to students in kindergarten through 5th grade in Oakland, California. I've also tutored college students for an undergraduate psychology class, and later law students for their criminal law class. I taught the 4 and 5 year old Sunday School class at my church throughout my teen years, so I'm quite familiar with this age group.

Paul G.

Fresno, CA

About Paul

Music is a universal language and it is this language that I have been speaking since my middle school years when I began playing saxophone in band. It was during these years that I began playing guit
ar as well. At first I began by teaching myself and during high school I began taking lessons. It was these lessons over years that have served me well as a guitarist and a musician. It is these skills that I would like to impart to those who are my students.

I hired Paul on as C'est La Vie Arts' guitar teacher after having him play a local gig. I was thoroughly impressed with his skill, work ethic, and pursuit of musical excellence. Not only is Paul concerned with musical integrity, but also personal integrity. He is an all-around good person and has been an absolute pleasure to work with. He has a great way with people and genuinely cares about his students and work. I look forward to seeing his students in performance and recitals to come!

Music Criticism: How To Handle a Critical Audience
Years ago, I heard my first band would be featured in the local paper and I was so excited to read the article. I hurried home to read it and found that the short blurb was far from complimentary.
