Specializing in teaching beginners. Can also help more advance students prepare for auditions, and work with advanced curriculum.
Derrick began playing the drums at the age of 8 in the elementary school concert band. He started out on just a snare drum but when he was 12, he got his first real drum set, and started a life of music.
Fast forward a few years and Derrick had experience playing in jazz bands, marching bands, concert bands, steel pan calypso band, along with his local garage band. After high school, Derrick moved to California to attend the Musicians Institutes in Hollywood California. There he studied under some of the greatest professionals in the business, and was exposed to a wide variety of music sty
les ranging from, Latin, R&B, Jazz, Funk, Rock, etc.
After graduating from school, Derrick moved back to Chicago where he has been playing weekly gigs, and touring around the country with his bands. Derrick is a young, energetic, but most importantly, patient drummer, who loves to share his craft with the world.
*** Lesson Details *** Derrick is laid back in his teaching style, but expects all of his students to practice and make weekly progression. He uses time tested and proven books and methods to teach his students the mechanics, theories, and techniques it takes to be a world class drummer. Reading and snare exercises are an important part of the curriculum, but not the main focus. He likes his students to enjoy what they are doing, so he brings other things to the lessons such as fun endurance and rhythm games. A brand new student that is dedicated to practicing could expect to be learning their favorite songs in 3 months time, and be playing in bands shortly afterward.
*** Studio Equipment *** All pro gear! Ludwig, Dw, Pearl, Mapex, Zildjian, Sabian and more. Multiple drum kits set up in the studio, along with sound system, and mac book pro.
*** Travel Equipment *** I will bring lesson material (books, sheet music, etc.) and iPod with apps such as metronome and the ability to listen to music. Isolation headphones to listen to songs while playing along. Stick, brushes. Anything else I might need.
Students are expected to have drum sticks a music stand and at very minimum a practice pad, all though a drum set is preferable.
*** Specialties *** Drum set is my specialty. I have experience with all major styles of music, and can teach any style. Other emphasis on playing in a band and percussion.

Great Drum Teacher
My daughter had been taking private drum lesson for years before she started with Derrick. At the first lesson, Derrick told her how important it was to feel the music, other than just working on technique. That was exactly what she needed to work on. Derrick has a broad experience with playing different type of music. He likes to show her how to play, which helps her understand right away. He is very nice and patient. He is flexible and reliable in terms of lesson schedules. He uses lots of references, songs and exercises in his teaching. Now, my daughter enjoys her lessons and practices a lot more.

I've known Mike since he was a teenager. Drumming is, and always was, his passion. You can't find a better instructor. His knowledge, experience and patience with younger children is over the top! My 5 year old grandson is a student and absolutely loves his lessons and his teacher. My rating is 5+

My child and I both share a love of drums. Unfortunately I wasn't very good at it, well at least til Mike came along. Now my son is in a band and I get to jam with them during practice. All thanks to you Mike. The take home DVD's as well really enhanced. This way we could go over what he just learned. Rock on buddy!!

Mike is a BEAST! Just by watching his videos alone I have made huge improvements. I had been playing over 20 yrs at that point, I wish I had known about Mike at an earlier point in my playing, who knows where I would be now.
Matthew has studied and taught drums for over 20 years. His specialty lies in drumset of all styles and rudimental snare drumming. You can expect a well rounded lesson covering all of the fundamentals to becoming a good drummer.
Matthew N. has been an educator and performer in the Chicago area and suburbs for over 10 years. Currently holding a studio of nearly 30 students he has become one of the area's many successful private instructors. Teaching piano, drums, and guitar Matthew can accommodate any student's needs and musical ambitions in those areas.
Matthew has studied at the collegiate level at the University of Iowa and holds a Bachelors in Percussion Performance. He has also been performing professionally at many of Chicago's finest venues for many years. Matthew is an audio engineer certified in Pro Tools a
nd Logic Pro, which are industry standard programs. Students are able to record and learn the art of production as they learn their instrument if they so choose. This allows students to hear themselves and learn from their performance as well as share their passion with family and friends as they create music.
Students are encouraged to pursue whatever moves them and are never restricted to any one type of practicing or playing. The main goal is to allow the student to find his or her own path in music and develop their own abilities in whatever way they see fit.

Matt is very thorough boys love him very satisfied
I play, write, record and perform a variety of American popular music forms including rock, folk, blues, funk, bluegrass, country, fingerstyle guitar, and jazz.
I began my musical training learning drums as a 12 year old and a year later began private lessons on guitar as well. In the following years, while playing in rock bands and focusing primarily on guitar and continuing practice on drums, I became interested in learning other instruments: I took harmonica lessons and taught myself how to play bass guitar and keyboards. As a teenager I also began writing my own songs and teaching my
self how to record music. I also play Spanish flamenco guitar and studied with master flamenco players while living in Madrid, Spain.
Today, I play guitar, harmonica, sing and write songs for my own group, while also working on a variety of other recording projects that reflect my various musical personalities. I love everything about music, and there's nothing I enjoy more than sharing music with others, whether that be playing in a group, going to a concert with a friend, or talking about music with one of my students. One of my greatest joys is seeing others get involved in the world of music by learning to play an instrument, so I take great pride and responsibility in teaching my students and I hope to make that experience as positive and rewarding as it can be for everyone I work with.
*** Lesson Details *** I am happy to work with students of any age regardless of prior experience or ability. Music is the universal language. Everyone is welcome.
Check out my new song samples for a taste of what I do. All instruments, vocals and production done by me at my home studio.
My approach: I take a multi-disciplinary, multi-instrumental approach to teaching music. I feel that today's students are very interested in learning more than just one instrument, style or discipline. One of my greatest assets as a teacher is that I can play and teach guitar, bass, drums, harmonica, keyboards, songwriting, and audio production/engineering, or any combination thereof, to a student that is interested in becoming more than just a guitar player.
That being said, my musical experience centers primarily on the guitar, and that's where I prefer to start teaching my students. And if you only want to learn guitar, we'll just stick with guitar. However, if you want to learn other instruments too (guitar and drums; guitar, bass, and harmonica; guitar, keys and drums; etc.) we will work together to create a program that allows you to achieve all of your musical goals in time.
No matter what, the bottom line is this: you determine the direction of your musical education. The first time we meet, we will talk about your musical interests and goals, and from that conversation I will design a curriculum that fits your personality, needs and desires. I work with each of my students to determine and constantly refine his or her path, and as we follow your path I will work to give you all the tools needed to pursue your goals...and if I can't give them to you I'll help you find someone who can. I know my limits as a musician and teacher and I will always be honest with you about those things. For example, if you decide you want to be a jazz guitarist, I can get you started on that path, but once you advance beyond my limits (I love jazz, but it's not my forte), I will help you find a teacher who better fits your needs and goals.
Finally, I have always felt that music should be fun and there's no reason that learning to play an instrument can't be fun too. That doesn't mean it won't be hard work, because, like anything else in life, as you get deeper into music it will not only become more rewarding, but more challenging too. Still, it should always be fun. I understand that each student is unique and what "fun" means for one student may be different for another, and so we will work at your pace and according to your goals and desires to create a program that is ideal for you.
I use a variety of teaching techniques and tools in my lessons and will cater those tools toward the needs of each student. You don't need to read music to learn how to play an instrument, but I do use a number of simple, easy-to-learn written methods in my teaching. More importantly, I encourage my students to learn how to "hear" music so that as they advance they can begin to teach themselves how to play the things that they hear. Therefore, much of my teaching method focuses on seeing, hearing and feeling the music...this is the way almost all popular music has been taught and learned since the beginning of time, and with the right supplement of written methods I think it still comprises the most effective way to become a complete musician.
I can also record every lesson for my students and make the recording available as a CD or mp3 via email so that you can listen to the lesson as you practice on your own at home.
Additionally, if you are interested in songwriting or audio recording, we can incorporate lessons on those subjects into your curriculum as well. Understanding both is an essential part of being a well-rounded musician in any genre these days and both fields can open up wide worlds of expression and artistry to those willing to delve into them. I am passionate and knowledgeable about both songwriting and recording.

I am completely new to playing an instrument and Will taught me an incredible amount... from playing the instrument, to understanding music theory, to listening and understanding some of the great musicians. He takes a holistic approach to his teaching and the 45 minute sessions are done before you know it. He makes it fun and comfortable, which is important when you are just learning. I recommend him if you are at any level.
Experienced drum teacher of 20 + years available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they need to know for participation in any musical environment (i.e. school band, community groups, etc.) and help customize lessons for what they want to learn. I specialize in all drum and percussion styles, typically use the Reed, Riley, and Goldenberg books, and use the following equipment during lessons: Gretsch/Tama drums and Adams percussion.
Hello! Thank you for taking the time to read through my background as your look for a drum teacher. Simply put: I love all things drums and percussion! By studying with me, you will learn how to read music (rhythm and pitch), learn fundamental stick/mallet techniques for the essential areas of drums/percussion, snare and keyboard mallets, and many important patterns and perfomance techniques necessary for success playing drumset and other percussion instruments.
Briefly, I have over 20 years of professional experience with a Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance and a Post-Baccalaurat
e degree for my Illinois K-12 Music Teaching Licensure, both from Northern Illinois University. I have taught every age group of students from all diverse backgrounds. I have written many solos for marimba and snare drum and written drum music for many middle school/high school/college drum lines in Tennessee and Illinois, where I played professionally for over 10 years. These age groups cover everything from elementary students up through adult beginners. I have played with every type of band on small club stages to full-size festival stages. My students use a combination of my experienced teaching materials (curriculum) with other popular method books to help better serve each student's needs based on their strengths and weaknesses. I believe ever new student should be able to read music after studying with me and I make sure they are able to do this and learn the skills necessary to play with any school band or other type of band. I also combine modern technology with all drumming techniques, like Ableton Live and Garageband software, for recording/playback and Roland electronics to help with timing and play-alongs. I teach the two most common percussion grips: matched (most common) and traditional (more common in marching and jazz drumming). The word grip refers to how you hold the sticks and is essential for learning more advanced techniques that will help with learning more difficult music, whether for school- band auditions, state contests, or a different band audition. I have two drum sets and a marimba (keyboard mallets) in the lesson room for their lessons, among other percussion items. I'm an easy-going person and always eager to help each student become better skilled in their percussion studies while studying with me! :)

When my son wanted to take drum lessons, we knew nothing about drums. Ben was very helpful in educating us what kind of drum and accessories to purchase. He went to the store to see what inventory they have and he even came to our house to help us set up the drum set.
Ben is passionate about his music and is a great drum player.
Students are raving about their Drum instructors on TakeLessons.

"To the point...
Matthew is very good at knowing where you should start. Instead of pulling out basic rudiments from the start, Matthew had me play my set
first. It was then he got a good understanding where I needed to start.
Matthew is very laid back, allows you to progress at your own speed, and always makes sure you got your lesson(s) before he leaves...
I would recommend Matthew to any drummer wanting professional instruction."

"Keith is the best! I came in as a beginner and Keith makes everything really easy to follow and understand. With over 40 years of experience, it's clear t
hat Keith really knows what he's talking about. Even as a Grammy-winner, with experience with people like Bob Seger and friends like Eddie and Alex Van Halen, he's still such a down-to-earth guy. I look forward to every one of our lessons! Not only am I learning the dynamics of drumming and starting with techniques that I'll be able to build on forever, but I also learn about the music industry every lesson. His lessons go well beyond just drumming and you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone else in the area who has his kind of experience and skills. Keith goes above and beyond, as an instructor. His love of drumming is infectious and I can't even believe I was able to get lessons with someone of his caliber. Musicians like Keith are usually in LA and NY, we are SO lucky to have him here. Look no further, Keith is your guy. If he has any availability! ;)"

"Alan tutored my youngest for in total I think about 8 months in drums and he's amazing. He's patient with younger kids, he's steady and focused on the cou
rse material and was always able to keep my easily distracted son in the lesson. He was encouraging and flexible and we just loved him. Unfortunately my son got a little over scheduled and needed to pick an activity to drop and one on one tutoring for drums was what he picked. But we expect he'll want to go back one day as he still plays the drums and when he does, we'd love to be able to work with Alan again. He's an exceptional teacher and on the rare occasion that Mr. Alan would play the drums to show my son a beat, wow he's an amazing drummer to listen too as well."

"To learn a cool instrument, you need a cool teacher, and Carmen is the coolest! It's so fun to take her class. I even love it as a parent, hanging out d

Carmen also has a way with kids. She pays enough attention to the kid to figure out their personality and draws them out. Little prizes, lots of praise, and my kid is highly motivated to learn and even practice at home.
Carmen uses a lot of technology to help them practice at home. I wish we had that when I was a kid. And did I mention how cool she is?"
