Derrick M.

Naperville, IL

Specializing in teaching beginners. Can also help more advance students prepare for auditions, and work with advanced curriculum.

About Derrick

Derrick began playing the drums at the age of 8 in the elementary school concert band. He started out on just a snare drum but when he was 12, he got his first real drum set, and started a life of music.

Fast forward a few years and Derrick had experience playing in jazz bands, marching bands, concert bands, steel pan calypso band, along with his local garage band. After high school, Derrick moved to California to attend the Musicians Institutes in Hollywood California. There he studied under some of the greatest professionals in the business, and was exposed to a wide variety of music sty
les ranging from, Latin, R&B, Jazz, Funk, Rock, etc.

After graduating from school, Derrick moved back to Chicago where he has been playing weekly gigs, and touring around the country with his bands. Derrick is a young, energetic, but most importantly, patient drummer, who loves to share his craft with the world.

*** Lesson Details ***
Derrick is laid back in his teaching style, but expects all of his students to practice and make weekly progression. He uses time tested and proven books and methods to teach his students the mechanics, theories, and techniques it takes to be a world class drummer. Reading and snare exercises are an important part of the curriculum, but not the main focus. He likes his students to enjoy what they are doing, so he brings other things to the lessons such as fun endurance and rhythm games. A brand new student that is dedicated to practicing could expect to be learning their favorite songs in 3 months time, and be playing in bands shortly afterward.

*** Studio Equipment ***
All pro gear! Ludwig, Dw, Pearl, Mapex, Zildjian, Sabian and more. Multiple drum kits set up in the studio, along with sound system, and mac book pro.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will bring lesson material (books, sheet music, etc.) and iPod with apps such as metronome and the ability to listen to music. Isolation headphones to listen to songs while playing along. Stick, brushes. Anything else I might need.

Students are expected to have drum sticks a music stand and at very minimum a practice pad, all though a drum set is preferable.

*** Specialties ***
Drum set is my specialty. I have experience with all major styles of music, and can teach any style. Other emphasis on playing in a band and percussion.

Great teacher!

Great with my daughter (age 7). She looks forward to her lesson every week, and is learning rapidly. He has great patience and has gotten to know my daughter and listens to her feedback while at the same time offering encouraging instruction.

Great Drum Teacher

My daughter had been taking private drum lesson for years before she started with Derrick. At the first lesson, Derrick told her how important it was to feel the music, other than just working on technique. That was exactly what she needed to work on. Derrick has a broad experience with playing different type of music. He likes to show her how to play, which helps her understand right away. He is very nice and patient. He is flexible and reliable in terms of lesson schedules. He uses lots of references, songs and exercises in his teaching. Now, my daughter enjoys her lessons and practices a lot more.

I've known Mike since he was a teenager. Drumming is, and always was, his passion. You can't find a better instructor. His knowledge, experience and patience with younger children is over the top! My 5 year old grandson is a student and absolutely loves his lessons and his teacher. My rating is 5+

My child and I both share a love of drums. Unfortunately I wasn't very good at it, well at least til Mike came along. Now my son is in a band and I get to jam with them during practice. All thanks to you Mike. The take home DVD's as well really enhanced. This way we could go over what he just learned. Rock on buddy!!

Mike is a BEAST! Just by watching his videos alone I have made huge improvements. I had been playing over 20 yrs at that point, I wish I had known about Mike at an earlier point in my playing, who knows where I would be now.

This allows students to hear themselves and learn from their performance as well as share their passion with family and friends as they create music.

Students are encouraged to pursue whatever moves them and are never restricted to any one type of practicing or playing. The main goal is to allow the student to find his or her own path in music and develop their own abilities in whatever way they see fit.

No matter what age, or skill level, i will give the student what he/she needs to have a solid foundation. I develop a great rapport with all of my students. Drum set work, from beginner to advanced, goes along with snare work, all styles. Mallet percussion, bells, xylophone, marimba. hand percussion, bongos, congas, hand held small percussion.

About john

I have instructed in public, private and charter school systems; class room and privately. Besides performing, instruction (passing it on) is my passion.
I have been performing professionally for over 35 years. I have toured nationally and internationally. I have been a full time self employed musician since 1987.

Not only is John an off-the-charts professional drummer, he's a fantastic human being as well! He loves music and it comes through in the lessons! In 35 years of playing and hanging around wannabees, John is the genuine musician! Anyone really wanting to learn correctly needs John. I recommend him 100%.

Evan R.

I take students from absolute beginners through to an advanced level. I wrote a method that you will have emailed to you as we go that covers everything, from timing to note reading to fills and hi hat splashes. When all the bases are covered, we begin learning music. You choose the bands, I help you apply the knowledge you've learned. In the advanced areas of the course, students have the opportunity to select what they want to learn, Jazz or Metal (double pedal training included)!

About Evan

Hi! My name is Evan and I'm excited to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2010 and have loved helping my students learn about playing drum set, percussion, and marching percussion. I went to Southern Illinois University Carbondale and earned my first degree in Music Business in 2012, and my Master's degree in Music Performance from Jacksonville State University in 2014. I'm easy to get along with and adjust my teaching style to my student's preference (everyone wants to achieve something different, and everyone learns at a different pace). I look forward to helping you reach yo
ur goals!

I first met Evan when attending a band camp in Southern Illinois and from the moment that he started talking I was automatically learning from him. He was incredibly fun and relatable to myself as a teenager, so he made the learning process more interesting. He's very talented and I know that when I left that camp, I left with so much more knowledge of percussion instruments and how they are played. I highly recommend him as a teacher.

While I only had a couple of lessons with Evan, he did an amazing job teaching me the basics of percussion. As a music teacher, I had taken a percussion techniques course in college which really did not teach me much about teaching others in percussion. Evan's fun and pedagogical structure in his lessons allowed me to fill those gaps in understanding and allowed me to be a better teacher as well as a better percussionist and drum set player. Highly recommend for students of any age.
