Specializing in teaching beginners. Can also help more advance students prepare for auditions, and work with advanced curriculum.
Derrick began playing the drums at the age of 8 in the elementary school concert band. He started out on just a snare drum but when he was 12, he got his first real drum set, and started a life of music.
Fast forward a few years and Derrick had experience playing in jazz bands, marching bands, concert bands, steel pan calypso band, along with his local garage band. After high school, Derrick moved to California to attend the Musicians Institutes in Hollywood California. There he studied under some of the greatest professionals in the business, and was exposed to a wide variety of music sty
les ranging from, Latin, R&B, Jazz, Funk, Rock, etc.
After graduating from school, Derrick moved back to Chicago where he has been playing weekly gigs, and touring around the country with his bands. Derrick is a young, energetic, but most importantly, patient drummer, who loves to share his craft with the world.
*** Lesson Details *** Derrick is laid back in his teaching style, but expects all of his students to practice and make weekly progression. He uses time tested and proven books and methods to teach his students the mechanics, theories, and techniques it takes to be a world class drummer. Reading and snare exercises are an important part of the curriculum, but not the main focus. He likes his students to enjoy what they are doing, so he brings other things to the lessons such as fun endurance and rhythm games. A brand new student that is dedicated to practicing could expect to be learning their favorite songs in 3 months time, and be playing in bands shortly afterward.
*** Studio Equipment *** All pro gear! Ludwig, Dw, Pearl, Mapex, Zildjian, Sabian and more. Multiple drum kits set up in the studio, along with sound system, and mac book pro.
*** Travel Equipment *** I will bring lesson material (books, sheet music, etc.) and iPod with apps such as metronome and the ability to listen to music. Isolation headphones to listen to songs while playing along. Stick, brushes. Anything else I might need.
Students are expected to have drum sticks a music stand and at very minimum a practice pad, all though a drum set is preferable.
*** Specialties *** Drum set is my specialty. I have experience with all major styles of music, and can teach any style. Other emphasis on playing in a band and percussion.

Great Drum Teacher
My daughter had been taking private drum lesson for years before she started with Derrick. At the first lesson, Derrick told her how important it was to feel the music, other than just working on technique. That was exactly what she needed to work on. Derrick has a broad experience with playing different type of music. He likes to show her how to play, which helps her understand right away. He is very nice and patient. He is flexible and reliable in terms of lesson schedules. He uses lots of references, songs and exercises in his teaching. Now, my daughter enjoys her lessons and practices a lot more.
Matthew has studied and taught drums for over 20 years. His specialty lies in drumset of all styles and rudimental snare drumming. You can expect a well rounded lesson covering all of the fundamentals to becoming a good drummer.
Matthew N. has been an educator and performer in the Chicago area and suburbs for over 10 years. Currently holding a studio of nearly 40 students he has become one of the area's many successful private instructors. Teaching piano, drums, and guitar Matthew can accommodate any student's needs and musical ambitions in those areas.
Matthew has studied at the collegiate level at the University of Iowa and holds a Bachelors in Percussion Performance. He has also been performing professionally at many of Chicago's finest venues for many years. Matthew is an audio engineer certified in Pro Tools a
nd Logic Pro, which are industry standard programs. Students are able to record and learn the art of production as they learn their instrument if they so choose. This allows students to hear themselves and learn from their performance as well as share their passion with family and friends as they create music.
Students are encouraged to pursue whatever moves them and are never restricted to any one type of practicing or playing. The main goal is to allow the student to find his or her own path in music and develop their own abilities in whatever way they see fit.

Great lesson - very knowledgeable
KarenW October 10, 2006
He is a perfect match for us! He is very knowledgeable and has a very warm and open personality.
I play, write, record and perform a variety of American popular music forms including rock, folk, blues, funk, bluegrass, country, fingerstyle guitar, and jazz.
I began my musical training learning drums as a 12 year old and a year later began private lessons on guitar as well. In the following years, while playing in rock bands and focusing primarily on guitar and continuing practice on drums, I became interested in learning other instruments: I took harmonica lessons and taught myself how to play bass guitar and keyboards. As a teenager I also began writing my own songs and teaching my
self how to record music. I also play Spanish flamenco guitar and studied with master flamenco players while living in Madrid, Spain.
Today, I play guitar, harmonica, sing and write songs for my own group, while also working on a variety of other recording projects that reflect my various musical personalities. I love everything about music, and there's nothing I enjoy more than sharing music with others, whether that be playing in a group, going to a concert with a friend, or talking about music with one of my students. One of my greatest joys is seeing others get involved in the world of music by learning to play an instrument, so I take great pride and responsibility in teaching my students and I hope to make that experience as positive and rewarding as it can be for everyone I work with.
*** Lesson Details *** I am happy to work with students of any age regardless of prior experience or ability. Music is the universal language. Everyone is welcome.
Check out my new song samples for a taste of what I do. All instruments, vocals and production done by me at my home studio.
My approach: I take a multi-disciplinary, multi-instrumental approach to teaching music. I feel that today's students are very interested in learning more than just one instrument, style or discipline. One of my greatest assets as a teacher is that I can play and teach guitar, bass, drums, harmonica, keyboards, songwriting, and audio production/engineering, or any combination thereof, to a student that is interested in becoming more than just a guitar player.
That being said, my musical experience centers primarily on the guitar, and that's where I prefer to start teaching my students. And if you only want to learn guitar, we'll just stick with guitar. However, if you want to learn other instruments too (guitar and drums; guitar, bass, and harmonica; guitar, keys and drums; etc.) we will work together to create a program that allows you to achieve all of your musical goals in time.
No matter what, the bottom line is this: you determine the direction of your musical education. The first time we meet, we will talk about your musical interests and goals, and from that conversation I will design a curriculum that fits your personality, needs and desires. I work with each of my students to determine and constantly refine his or her path, and as we follow your path I will work to give you all the tools needed to pursue your goals...and if I can't give them to you I'll help you find someone who can. I know my limits as a musician and teacher and I will always be honest with you about those things. For example, if you decide you want to be a jazz guitarist, I can get you started on that path, but once you advance beyond my limits (I love jazz, but it's not my forte), I will help you find a teacher who better fits your needs and goals.
Finally, I have always felt that music should be fun and there's no reason that learning to play an instrument can't be fun too. That doesn't mean it won't be hard work, because, like anything else in life, as you get deeper into music it will not only become more rewarding, but more challenging too. Still, it should always be fun. I understand that each student is unique and what "fun" means for one student may be different for another, and so we will work at your pace and according to your goals and desires to create a program that is ideal for you.
I use a variety of teaching techniques and tools in my lessons and will cater those tools toward the needs of each student. You don't need to read music to learn how to play an instrument, but I do use a number of simple, easy-to-learn written methods in my teaching. More importantly, I encourage my students to learn how to "hear" music so that as they advance they can begin to teach themselves how to play the things that they hear. Therefore, much of my teaching method focuses on seeing, hearing and feeling the music...this is the way almost all popular music has been taught and learned since the beginning of time, and with the right supplement of written methods I think it still comprises the most effective way to become a complete musician.
I can also record every lesson for my students and make the recording available as a CD or mp3 via email so that you can listen to the lesson as you practice on your own at home.
Additionally, if you are interested in songwriting or audio recording, we can incorporate lessons on those subjects into your curriculum as well. Understanding both is an essential part of being a well-rounded musician in any genre these days and both fields can open up wide worlds of expression and artistry to those willing to delve into them. I am passionate and knowledgeable about both songwriting and recording.

I am completely new to playing an instrument and Will taught me an incredible amount... from playing the instrument, to understanding music theory, to listening and understanding some of the great musicians. He takes a holistic approach to his teaching and the 45 minute sessions are done before you know it. He makes it fun and comfortable, which is important when you are just learning. I recommend him if you are at any level.
JasonK April 6, 2011
I've had a few lessons with Will, and it's going great. He's tailoring the lessons to my skill level and my goals unlike any class could. Thanks.
I have been teaching beginner to professional of all ages for eighteen years. My students all have positive experiences and have given me great feedback!
I have been working as a freelance musician and private instructor in Chicago for fifteen years. During this time I have been hired to perform Jazz, Rock, R/B, and world music. As an instructor I have maintained a studio of five to twenty students on a weekly basis. I hold a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Percussion Performance, and a Master of Music degree from De Paul University in Jazz Studies.
*** Lesson Details *** With committed weekly practice there are no limits to a student's potential. I like to use the term guide to describe my teaching
style. In a relaxed atmosphere, the student and I are working together to advance their musical goals. Sometimes goals are reached quickly, more often we need more time and repetition to advance. The mind learns quicker than the body, so focused practice will help train the body and bring it to the mind's level.
*** Studio Equipment *** Finished Basement studio: drum set, snare drum, small mallet, xylophone and electric piano, room for parents to sit in on lesson
*** Travel Equipment *** Student should provide sticks and mallets and purchase a book that we will work out of weekly.
*** Specialties *** I feel comfortable teaching all levels of percussion. I have experience teaching a variety of styles Jazz, rock, classical, and world.

**Excellent** drum instructor, highly recommended
Jeff is everything you'd want in a drum instructor: he is highly skilled, has thorough knowledge of drumming styles and technique, and he is an excellent communicator. On top of that he is thoughtful, polite and listens carefully. This is all a very, very rare combination.
I had to play a couple of slow gospel tunes for a church service this summer; Jeff very quickly found suitable and tasteful grooves for me that were within my capability to play. He also worked with me on some rudiments and provided invaluable feedback. I can't recommend him highly enough.
CarmenB3 April 10, 2012
Jeff is a very good teacher, he's very kind and takes everything step by step. I love the way he works with me and im doing great progress because of him.
I have been teaching drum lessons full time for 11 years. My main goal as a teacher has always been to give every student a solid foundation in the fundamentals of drumming. This includes both the mental and physical aspects. Mental includes both reading music and playing by ear, and physical includes proper technique and coordination for both the hands and feet. Once you become proficient in the raw materials of drumming you will be able to learn any style of music you want.
My approach to teaching is very focused on giving students a strong foundation in the fundamentals of music. For drums this would be reading and understanding rhythms, proper technique which includes both hands and feet for drum kit, snare drum which I believe is the foundation for everything, and practicing with a metronome. Having a good solid foundation in these things will give you the tools necessary to learn any style of music you choose with much more ease and confidence. I know this from my own personal 26 years of experience and also from the success of my former and current students
who have this foundation.

You can count on Andrew to always give you his all. He is actually the only drum teacher that I endorse. Not only is he immensely talented in all areas of percussion, but he has the communication skills and personality critical for an effective teacher. He truly cares about his students and he will go the extra mile if there is something in particular you want to focus on. If you are passionate about learning the drums or simply want to get better, he will take you in the right direction.
On numerous occasions after shows, people have asked me who my drum teacher is, they tell me I have very good form and look relaxed while playing. I learned everything I know from Andrew and I am so thankful for his guidance because he is responsible for all of my progress.

Andrew is excellent. He has a gift for relating to our 16 year old son, complementing his interest and gift in music. The result? our son has not only has improved skill, but also the understanding and passion that drive commitment and excellence. Andrew is always professional. He communicates well with both parents and students. Our son has various social challenges and Andrew seems to effortlessly create communication and progress. The result? We see benefits from Andrew's coaching both on and off the drums:)

Andrew is simply the best. Our 11 year old son has been taking drum lessons for a couple of years now; has a great experience at every lesson; and looks forward to Andrew's knock on the door every week. I cannot say enough about Andrew's enthusiasm, ability to relate, and knowledge of his craft. As a past professional opera singer I've been coached by some of the best in the business. Andrew is right up there and he is especially talented in his ability to work with younger people. My son took to him like glue to wood. If you employ Andrew as an instructor you will absolutely not be disappointed.

"Fanstastic teacher for my 7-year-old little drummer!
We originally chose Jesse because we found out he could teach just about any instrument and my 7-yea
r-old son wasn't sure about what he wanted to play. On the first class he tried the drums, and he never wanted to let it go. My son is a particularly challenging student because he is highly distractible, and Jesse was extremely patient and very organized/methodic with him, and therefore able to keep him on track. My husband plays in a band, and we both think Jesse is a super talented teacher who offers lessons with a great balance between fun and actual learning of good musical habits. In less that a month my son was feeling confident enough to play in front of the camera and send family members video samples of his new drummer self! We couldn't be happier."
