I am a Florida native, active doctoral student, teacher and practitioner. My career includes performing and recording as a guitarist and teaching subjects such as music or math. Grade-school academic strengths in mathematics represent my enthusiasm for the subject. The math equivalent in music can be considered music theory, which is another passion of mine. I hope to take these well-rounded characteristics to teach and influence others with what I have learned in my education and career thus far.

Education & Teaching Experience:

I am currently pursuing my Doctorate of Musical Arts from Shenandoah University and hold a Masters of Music from the University of Akron and a Bachelor of Music from Stetson University (all degrees with a guitar performance emphasis). I also have a temporary teaching certificate for Music K-12 fro
m the Florida Department of Education. I have taught in Florida as a preferred substitute for general music classes, K-12. In college, I have given study sessions for music theory levels ranging from 4-part writing to post-serialism.

I am interested in teaching you what you need and want to learn so that you achieve your dreams. Please note that I only take serious students who will practice at least 30 minutes every day or 35 a day 6 days a week at home. I would like you to keep a log of how much you practice. This will enable you to make progress through the curriculum as you will be a beginner for the first 3.3 years, an intermediate for the next 3.3 years, and then an advanced student for 3.3 years. I will give you assignments to do over the week, and the next week we will go over them, learn something new and get new assignments. It takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert!

Hello everyone! Please have a look around my profile and feel free to contact me. I have taught privately since 2009 and joined takelessons.com in 2014.

I strongly feel each student needs lesson goals tailored to what he or she wants to take away from music. Getting ready for a college performance degree, making it to state solo contest, surviving band music, or simply discovering the huge scope of music available to us these days are each worthy goals, but require different preparation. I will work with you to figure out where your interests lie and focus on those, first and foremost!

My education includes bachelor's and master's degrees in trumpet performance from Lawrence University and UW-Milwaukee, respectively. In addition to my private studio, I maintain an active teaching schedule with the Fairfield Jr/Sr High School marchin

Jonathan Roberts is a performing jazz and hip hop musician. He attended Berklee College of Music for Trumpet performance and Composition, and holds a bachelors degree in Jazz Piano Performance from Portland State University.

Jonathan teaches technique and performance skills focused on interaction with other musicians. His lessons focus heavily on listening, discussions about current music artists and trends, understanding key harmonic and theoretical concepts, and playing together to develop improvisation skills.

I have been teaching trumpet, music theory, jazz harmony, jazz piano, and music composition to students of all ages since late 2008. I work very well with young, beginning students as well, and can teach all levels.

I am a touring trumpet player currently working with SAINT MOTEL, and have experiences performing and touring all over the world. In addition to excellent musical education, I apply lessons I have learned from travel that I find truly help as an educational supplement.

Working at UCLA for my degree in music performance has taught me what it takes to be a good teacher, and I am patient, understanding, and believe there's no greater feeling than watching my students flourish. My 9 yr old son has learned so much in only 3 lessons with Zach. We had planned on doing 1 lesson a week but immediately my son wanted more. He is very new to playing an instrument so we were just eager for him to play something that resembled a note but we’ve been super surprised to hear him already playing recognizable beginner songs.

Throughout my time at Berklee, NEC, and now Juilliard, I have studied with many great teachers and musicians from Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Henderson, Kenny Barron, Tiger Okoshi, John McNeil, and Laurie Frink to Jerry Bergonzi, and Miguel Zenon. The diverse subjects we went over in lessons and classes gives me a unique knowledge of certain styles and musical ideas. I try to be as personal and individual as I can when it comes to teaching students. That was the thing that stood out amongst my favorite teachers.

About David
At 29 years old, David is one of the most active and exciting trumpet players in New York City’s jazz scene. A graduate of the prestigious Berklee Global Jazz Institute, David had the privilege to study and perform with some of jazz’s most accomplished and well-known musicians in the world, including Wayne Shorter, Dave Liebman, Danilo Perez, John Patitucci, Joe Lovano, and George Garzone. David then attended the prestigious New England Conservatory where he received his Master’s of Music in Jazz Performance.

A world-class musician, David’s talents have sent him all over the globe to venues such as the Tokyo Jazz Festival, the Fandango Fronterizo Festival in Tijuana, Mexico, the Torino Jazz Festival, the Panama Jazz Festival with Danilo Perez, the Newport Jazz Festival; as well as venues from coast to coast in the US. In February 2014
, David independently released Progress Report, his first full-length album as a leader and composer. This project debuts intriguing, all-original music, and David is joined by some of the finest young musicians in Boston and New York.

Upon moving to New York Ctiy, David attended the Juilliard School where he earned his Artist Diploma in Jazz Studies under the direction of Wynton Marsalis, Greg Gisbert, and Ben Wolfe. Now a member of the Grammy award-winning Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra with Arturo O’Farrill, David can be seen performing around New York City including a weekly residency at the world famous Birdland.

Hi, I am Matt. I am a band director in the Fort Smith, AR area. I am in my 7th year teaching band and love every minute of it. I have recently decided to return to teaching private lessons, and would love to help you with your auditions, festival music, AP music theory exams, or just learn some skills on becoming a better musician. Outside of the audition music, we continually work tone production, range, and confidence on any brass instrument. In college I had a small guitar studio as well. I love teaching music to students.. especially the art of playing trumpet. I try to incorporate fun and enthusiasm in each lesson while accomplishing some short term and long term goals. The student is my ultimate focus during the lesson time. Sometimes my students arrive and have a total different idea of concepts or literature in which they wish to make progress different from what I had planned. We are always able to accommodate these shifts in plans while reaching our lesson goals.

Dr. Mealey was the man who taught me my very first lesson on the tuba oh so many years ago. I have since had the privilege of performing professionally in over 40 states and 30 countries around the world as a soloist and as a member of Boston Brass. The years of private lessons I took with Dr. Mealey gave me the perfect musical foundation to eventually pursue my dreams.

I still remember how much he cared for every single kid in each of his bands. There are people who are put on this earth to teach and he is one of those. I can't imagine how my life would have turned out if it weren't for Dr. Mealey.

I can't recommend studying with him any more highly.

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Mealey for fourteen years, first as a colleague and then as his supervisor. Bob is a very skilled musician and teacher. He has had many years of experience bringing his students' performance levels to new heights. He works hard and expects the same from his students. This winning combination has helped to create some very skilled musicians, with many of them going on to enjoy playing in ensembles for many years.

It was always a pleasure to watch Dr. Mealey and his students perform in concert. The looks of joy were always evident with everyone in the house - members of the ensemble, its director, and the audience.

You can't go wrong with Dr. Mealey.

Dr. Mealey had a tremendous impact on all of my children. He truly instilled in them a love of music and gave them an opportunity to really experiment and express themselves. Because of their solid foundation with Dr. Mealey, they played throughout high school and some even into the college level marching band! Dr. Mealey is a class act and knows how to connect with his students!
