I spent years working in New York City with acclaimed Metropolitan Opera bass baritone Mark Oswald. Prior to my work with Mark I received a bachelors degree in Music Performance with an emphasis on opera from Portland State University.

My teaching is rooted in body awareness and emotional connectivity. I use techniques I learned and developed over years teaching movement (barre3). I also use techniques I learned from taking music lessons and coaching sessions from some of the most reputable artists in the opera world.

I write my own music and I also reinterpret classical pieces to make them more accessible to modern audiences; I have a unique ability to cut to the essence of a song.

I currently play shows at The Dandy Warhols’ wine bar The Old Portland and have a music project with Zia McCabe of The Dandy Warhols.

Throughout each lesson, I learned something new about myself. She was very patient, informative, and always had good things to say about you and your acting/voice skills. She helped awaken my creative theatre mind again and I’m thankful for that. I highly recommend taking her if you want a good experience in learning or enhancing your acting/voice skills!

Phil Norris has been teaching trumpet since 1983. He teaches the physical side of the trumpet as well as the musical side. The trumpet, being one of the most physically grueling instruments, demands this. He gives a customized routine for the student to do at home and he also helps with those who are having embouchure problems, whether they’ve developed a bad habit or have had to deal with braces.
On the musical side, Phil teaches jazz improv, big band lead, how to play in a rock horn section, and even classical style. Of course reading music and helping with the student’s school material is also focused on.

About Phil

*** Specialties *** I specialize in embouchure development and the physical side of playing a trumpet first. Of course I teach music too and help with a students' school band music, etc.

My son has been a trumpet student with Phil Norris for the past 3 years. I am very pleased with the instruction. Phil continues to work with Alex to improve his embouchure through various lip exercises and slurs. Also, works on diaphragm strength through various exercise. Alex is one of the top trumpet players at his school as a freshman. His range and tone has dramatically improved since working with Phil. Phil is fun and engaging as well. I highly recommend Phil to anyone looking for a competent and skilled music instructor.
Greg
I took lessons from Phil for 3 years
and played alongside him on a few gigs. Phil is the real deal. He can scream high notes, low notes, and everything in between. He can help you get results.
Gary
I have been taking lessons from Phil for almost two years. He is very patient making the student feel comfortable. He is not harshly critical. Just gives good feedback. He is a master of appropriately challenging the student. At times he will play along with me which I find helpful. If I miss a lesson he gives me make up lessons. His rates are more than fair. I highly recommend Phil for trumpet instruction.

Hear me out- The piano may be the easiest instrument to play physically and one of the hardest to play mentally.

Easy to play physically:
With the piano, just hit a key to make a sound come out. Thats it. No fighting with the reed on a saxophone, killin' your cheeks on a trumpet, or building calluses on the guitar.

Hard to play mentally:
Almost all other instruments require both hands to create sound. Strings require one hand to choose a note on a string while the other hand plucks or bows it and all wind instruments require both hands to pick a note while your breath plays it. We already know to play the piano you just hit a button... this means each hand can hit a button. You can now make two sounds at once, independently from each other. It's like playing two instruments at once.

This lets us start simple because its easy to play, but allows us to grow in so many topics because of the pianos "harmonic depth." Try learning chords and theory on a horn instrument which ...

"Shannon is not just an amazing and talented singer but instructor as well. She knows how to assess and guide me when it comes to my voice. I love how she makes me feel comfortable and creates a safe place for me to be able to explore my voice without feeling self conscious. She will break down the warm up or song you’re working on to ensure you’re nailing it. Shannon will find different approaches in warm ups to cater to your own voice in order for you to grow. Any question that I have she will thoroughly explain and will even put it into the warm ups for practice. I started noticing a difference in my voice after the first lesson. Shannon will go above and beyond for her students. Reaching out to her for voice lessons was the best decision I ever made!"
