I earned my music degree from Portland State University in 2006, graduating with honors. In 1996 I won two Medals of Distinction for violin performance and music theory and then in 2001 I received a Merit Award from the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music, London, England for viola performance. I've been blessed to be able to perform in a variety of ensembles and genres such as musical theater pit orchestras, string quartets, the Vancouver Symphony, and rock, jazz, tango, Middle Eastern and blue grass/folk bands.

My biggest thrill is to be able to transmit culture to the younger generation through music.

I offer the following for my violin, viola, cello, bass and piano students. Most of all, it is the joy of music making that I want to share with my students.

Private and group lessons
Two recitals a year
Special performance opportunities throughout the year
Classical, jazz, fiddle, rock, tango, sacred, Celtic, folk
Music theory
Customized lesson plans using various methods old and new

I endeavor to provide a fun, non intimidating environment for students while motivating them to achieve their highest potential by providing many performance opportunities throughout the year. Some of my students have appeared as special guests with my band, Mango Nights.

Included with weekly private lessons are once a month group lessons where students can learn essential ensemble skills and have fun meeting other students.

Beginning students learn several simple songs that teach great tone and rhythm using classical, folk, blues, rock, ragtime, bluegrass. Students learn concepts such as syncopation, rhythm, note reading, articulations, dynamics, asymmetrical time meters and and more. Each book comes with a CD with piano accompaniment which makes practicing at home enjoyable.

Students are gradually introduced to scales, arpeggios, music theory, ear training and sight reading. All this works together to produce "the complete musician". The complete musician is a person who has excellent rhythm, pitch, note reading skills and creativity, a person who can enjoy and appreciate music in it's various forms over a lifetime whether it be for personal enjoyment or as a career.

For more serious students who have the goal of auditioning for university scholarships, top youth orchestras or becoming a professional musician, an accelerated intensive course is available in partnership with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. In this program, the student is prepared for a once a year rigorous exam requiring the playing of select pieces, scales and arpeggios, sight reading and ear training. The candidate performs for the visiting Associated Board Examiner from London England and is graded on a point system. Upon passing the student receives a beautiful certificate and additional awards for high scores. Once a year at a separate time, a written exam for music theory is taken. The exams are graded 1 to 8 and can be classical or jazz depending on the candidate's choice.

Before switching to primarily playing viola, I trained and performed as a violinist for ten years and graduated from the Suzuki Violin Method. I now play violin as my secondary instrument.

My teaching style is inspired by my initial training in the Suzuki method, and my studies with violist and pedagogue Karen Ritscher at Oberlin Conservatory. Please note, I have not yet received training as a Suzuki teacher and use the Suzuki method books and the teaching I received as a Suzuki student as a jumping off point for working on each student's individual needs.

About Grace
I studied viola at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and moved to Portland three years ago to pursue performance and teaching opportunities. Since then I have performed with Classical Revolution PDX, Cascadia Composers and ARCO PDX and am a member of Macaulay Balkan.

My initial studies were on violin using the Suzuki method, which has greatly influenced my teaching approach. However, I am dedicated to customizing the lesson time and structure to the needs and priorities of my students.

*** Specialties ***

An experienced and certified Suzuki teacher, my students learn to play the violin starting from a solid foundation with emphasis on posture and producing a beautiful tone. In addition to playing the instrument, students can expect to learn reading music, basic theory, music history, and ear training. Learning violin will teach patience, concentration, the value of hard work, coordination, as well as enhancing memory, aural skills, and fine motor control. It was Dr. Suzuki's belief and mine that learning an instrument not only fosters these skills but also helps to foster the hearts and minds of those learning the craft.

About Sylvia
Sylvia is a violinist based in Cleveland, with an active career as a performer and teacher. She is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music with both a Bachelor’s in Violin Performance and a Master’s degree in Violin Performance and Suzuki Pedagogy. A fully certified teacher through the Suzuki Association of the Americas, she teaches through the Music Settlement, Laurel School, Bard High School, and maintains a private studio of students in Cleveland and Zimbabwe with ages ranging from three year-olds to adults. As a performer, she performs regularly throughout the Cleveland area with the Akron Symphony, and in chamber and solo appearances in a variety of settings from concert halls to hospitals.

During the summers Ms. W has participated in Bowdoin International Music Festival, National Repertory Orchestra, and Music Inspire Af
rica, a life-changing program that allowed her to share her love of performing and teaching music with the people of South Africa and Zimbabwe. Building from this experience, Ms. W founded her own program in 2017, Cleveland Harare Music Exchange, which seeks to bring musical guidance to the children of Harare, Zimbabwe through the Suzuki method and high level performances.

Ms. W believes strongly in music education as a tool for social change, and is excited to study this topic in depth as a member of the 2018 Global Leaders Program. As a participant, Ms. W will have the opportunity to engage a diverse group of students in Chile and Puerto Rico this spring.

I began teaching violin and viola in 2012. I have enjoyed working with students of varying ages, who thus far have ranged from age 3.5 to adult. Each one of my students is unique, and I appreciate that in each lesson, I can focus on the needs and strengths of that individual student. On my own, I particularly enjoy playing with other people. I often play harmony parts with my students when they have mastered their current piece both to help verify their competency and to acclimate them to playing with others. I currently play viola with the San Francisco Civic Symphony and sight-read chamber music with fellow musicians. I have greatly enjoyed both teaching music and learning about music pedagogy through the Suzuki Association of the Americas.

First lesson was fine. We took a few minutes to find each other in a cafe setting but as it was also a meet and greet session I wasn't too concerned about time. As it turns out Beth more than made up the time. She's very pleasant and easy to speak with. We went over my goals, simple traveler type words, phrases and questions, and a work schedule to cover the next several weeks. If you are ready to take on music lessons, your life will never be the same. Music enriches our minds and lives in many ways, including expanding our expectations past what we think is possible for ourselves! I've taught hundreds of students over almost 20 years, and have loved helping my students learn to read and play, discover their own love of music, and conquer their fears of performing. I've been described by students as encouraging and fun, and my teaching style is warm, positive, and relaxed. I have worked with many students, including some with learning disabilities, physical limitations, PTSD, and just plain ol' stage fright! I work with you to set y
our own goals, and I look forward to helping you reach them... It's what I love about what I do.

I began my violin studies at age 9, with my humble public school string program. I continued through high school and into college, playing and singing with auditioned district ensembles, school musicals, and chamber choirs, coming in as runner up in my high school's concerto competition, and performing twice in Carnegie Hall. I studied opera, vocal pedagogy, and passed my piano proficiency exam from the advanced class.

In 2003, I earned my violin performance degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and soon after, joined the Kansas City-based Celtic folk group, Tullamore. I have enjoyed 13 seasons with this lauded regional group, playing countless esteemed Celtic festivals across the country and embarking on five international tours of Ireland and Scotland, as well as a Caribbean cruise hosted for our fans. Our sixth international tour is scheduled for 2019 in Scotland.

In 2014, I relocated to Hampton, Virginia, where I auditioned for the Hampton Roads Philharmonic, and currently play as a first violinist.

In 2015, I began playing with Brackish Water Jamboree, an award-winning Americana band, featured on NPR's Blue Plate Special and Out of the Box series with Paul Shugrue, and host of the NorFOLK Festival.

Throughout this time, I have enjoyed teaching a full and enriching music studio of students: hosting recitals, open mics, and ensemble rehearsals, and watching students achieve goals they didn't know were even possible. I continue to teach online via Skype, Facebook video chat, and Google Hangouts, and I look forward to working with you to accomplish your own musical aspirations!

Hello future students! I've been playing violin for 20 of my 25 years of age and teaching for 8 years. I believe that the most important part of learning the violin is having fun and building a passion for music. In my lessons we will focus on proper violin technique, music theory and fun application. In fun application, the student chooses what he/she would like to work on, whether it be Mozart or The Chainsmokers or the Moana score, and we learn it together!
I am also proficient in music production/engineering which means that my students can professionally record themselves in my home studio! I also make viral violin videos which I want to start including my students in. If this sounds like fun to you, let's get started! :)

About Jacqueline
Hello future students! I've been playing violin for 20 of my 25 years of age and teaching for 8 years. I believe that the most important part of learning the violin is having fun and building a passion for music.

In my lessons we will focus on proper violin technique, music theory and most importantly (and fun!) practical application. In practical application, the student chooses what he/she would like to work on, whether it be Mozart or The Chainsmokers or the Moana score, and we learn it together!

I am also proficient in music production/engineering which means that my students can professionally record themselves in my home studio.

If this sounds like fun to you - let's get started! :)

Teaching method:

I have a three pronged approach to my teaching method: technique, music theory and practical application. However, I
believe the most important part of any teaching plan is molding it to fit the student’s needs, so the following methods are entirely flexible.

TECHNIQUE
For technique, we start with simple scales to work on bowing and intonation. When this becomes easy for the student, we move on to more complex key signatures and minor scales, eventually moving into 2 octaves and learning the left hand positions. For intermediate students who want to excel in classical music, we will work on etudes as well as scales.

MUSIC THEORY
I teach music theory as it applies to what the student is currently playing so as not to cause confusion. For example, if the student is learning to play a new piece with a more complex rhythm, we will go over time signatures, how many beats each note gets and so on. I always make flashcards for students so they can “practice” music theory when I’m not there, especially for students who are just learning to read music.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION
In practical application, the student can apply what they learn about technique and music theory to a fun song. I start with the Suzuki books because I like the way they’re structured in terms of technique, and because I love the repertoire. Suzuki books generally come with a CD containing piano accompaniment tracks, which I’ve found students love to play with. Finally, I let the student pick a song of their choice and we learn it together. If the student isn’t enjoying Suzuki, we focus more on the student’s song of choice.

She has an expansive library of musical exercises and songs that are perfect for making your practicing more efficient and your playing sound better. Over the last two years I’ve started to see her as less of a violin teacher and more of a violin guru. I high recommend her to any new/old violin student.
