Mrs. Jen has been a violin teacher for our daughter for 3.5 years. She is an extremely qualified and talented musician who deeply cares about her students and is committed to teaching. She is kind and patient, but also effective and motivating. When our 8 year old daughter learned Mrs. Jen was moving she said, "I probably will never have as neat or special of a violin teacher as Mrs. Jen"- and she's right!

First lesson was fine. We took a few minutes to find each other in a cafe setting but as it was also a meet and greet session I wasn't too concerned about time. As it turns out Beth more than made up the time. She's very pleasant and easy to speak with. We went over my goals, simple traveler type words, phrases and questions, and a work schedule to cover the next several weeks. Beth told me how she was going to approach teaching me after listening to my goals. I'm looking forward to the next session where we can focus on learning the language.

My friends and family often call me a professional student. I completed my associate degree within my last two years of high school through dual enrollment. Throughout my school years, I've had many experiences with professional tutors and I paid attention to how they helped me learn. I am a graduate of Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and an emphasis on secondary education. My student teaching was with middle schoolers and I've always enjoyed working with adult learners. While there is something fantastic about every student, I think I am a uniquely perfect fit for the student that is math-phobic or even hates math.

Math did not always come easily for me and I vividly remember being extremely frustrated, especially in high school. One teacher in college, though, had a different presentation style, and everything started to click. After that, I knew that learning math was as much about the instructor as it was about the student. Moreover, I knew I wanted to be the kind of teacher that worked to meet a student where they were at and then teach to their learning style whe
never possible.

So when working with me, either alone or in a small group, I will work to get to know you, your goals, your interests, and your learning style. Then I will do everything I can to make the topics relevant to you. I will never answer a "Why" questions with "Just because". If you don't understand when I explain it one way, I will try a different approach, and keep trying until you understand. I do not see teaching as simply repeating what has been already detailed in text books and lectures. Everyone’s mind is different and thus everyone has a unique perception to understanding one issue or another. Things are better illustrated with an example.

A while back, there was a television show hosted by a T.V. personality named Monty Hall. In the show, Monty presented a contestant with 3 closed doors. Behind one door was a new car. And behind each of the other two doors was a goat. The contestant had the option to choose one door so as to win the new car.

The probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 or door 3 was the same, about 33.33%. Let us say that the contestant picked door 1. Monty would then open one of the other two doors that were not chosen by the contestant. There were 3 terms in the game: 1) Monty knew what w
as behind each door; 2) Monty cannot open the door that was already chosen by the contestant; 3) Monty would only open a door that hides a goat.

Let us say Monty opened door 3 revealing a goat. Monty then asked the contestant if the contestant would like to switch to door 2 or keep his original choice of door 1. Contestants would be bewildered not knowing really what to do. Was it better to keep the originally choice or was it better to switch or it would make no difference whether to keep the original choice or switch?

Meet Marilyn vos Savant. Marilyn wrote a column called “Ask Marilyn” in a newspaper called Parade. Marilyn was known for having one of the highest recorded IQ. A reader sent Marilyn a letter asking her if it was better to switch or not to switch. Marilyn stated in her column that a contestant should switch since switching doubled the contestant’s chances of winning. Many of Marilyn’s readers erupted in protest including readers with Ph.D., mathematicians, and academicians. Most people believed that the probability that a car was behind door 1 or door 2 was the same of 50%.

This became known as The Monty Hall Problem or The Monty Hall Paradox. Articles and books were written over this problem. Actually Marilyn was right and this was proven using computer simulation. Yet until today many people cannot understand that switching doubles the chances of winning.

At first glance this paradox might seem irrelevant to teaching. But I think it does. This paradox tutor the mind in the subject of structured thinking which is very important in learning.

I received my bachelors degree from Ottawa University in 2002, in elementary education. I received my masters degree from Grand Canyon University in 2007. My masters degree is in curriculum and instruction with a focus on reading. I went back to school because I felt I could do more for students with special needs. I am currently teaching in a 4-6 grade self-contained special education classroom.

Many kids and young adults struggle with confidence around math, and having had experience with that myself I use tools that help meet students where they're at and support them in building enthusiasm for math and confidence in themselves. In addition to providing tangible math skills (I have not only been tutoring Algebra, Geometry, SAT prep, elementary and middle school math for 5 years, but have also helped run a math tutoring company in which I built year-long curricula for grades K-12), I help students feel that math is within their grasp and can be approached with curiosity rather than fear and low self-esteem.

My session with Julie was suuuper good for my spirit and clearing up the little stuck places that are keeping my beautiful voice from flowing through. I appreciated the patience and focus she had while bringing awareness to the sound I'm offering and helping to tap into my power and tones.
