I achieved a chess rating in the 98th percentile of scholastic players. I have had the opportunity to teach chess to many beginners by starting the chess club at my elementary school, and teaching students in junior high and high school chess clubs. I would like to teach beginning chess players (

About Tyler
I received my Bachelors of Science in Cellular Molecular Biology, graduated Summa Cum Laude (GPA > 3.9) and Phi Kappa Phi (Top 10% of class). I scored in the 99th percentile of the MCAT, 100th percentile of the ACS National Organic Chemistry Exam, and 98th percentile in the science section of the ACT. This fall, I will be attending a Top 15 medical school.

I grew up with the learning disabilities dyslexia, dysgraphia, and auditory processing disorder. I believe the challenges of having learning disabilities has given me the experience to help others succeed and enjoy academics.

I began teaching by tutoring at-risk students in chemistry at my high school. I mentored students in problem solving and aimed to excite them towards the assignments.

I continued teaching as a teaching assistant for the upper division cell biology class
by instructing students in immunological laboratory techniques (including flow cytometry and ELISA).

My research on rheumatoid arthritis conducted at my college and Harvard Medical School has resulted in seven presentations, three at national medical conferences.

As a chess player I achieved a rating in the 98th percentile of scholastic players and have taught students from 8 to 27 years old.

About John
Here goes...
I am a chess teacher, tutor, singer, and Shakespearean actor in NYC! I guess you could say I wear a lot of hats.

I graduated with honors in 2009 from New York University with a BFA in Drama. I've been professionally teaching since 2012, but I have always loved sharing the game of chess with anyone who wants to learn (just ask my friends).

Students can expect to face new challenges and to improve each and every week. I am happy to work with students of all different ages and experience levels. I started working with John almost a year ago. I was completely new to chess and was interested in learning to play. John has done a great job teaching me the basics (and now some more advanced material) and has also gotten me really excited about the game. Lessons are a nice mix of tactics, broader strategy, and some chess history. It has been really wonderful taking lessons with John. Beyond providing great lessons, he is a really fun and enthusiastic person. It's hard not to be excited about chess when working with him. He is also a dedicated teacher and regularly follows up by email in between lessons, sending homework and lots of resources for outside work.

I have had the pleasure of being one of John's chess students for almost a year and half now, and I can confidently say I have improved leaps and bounds from where I started. While John always has an interactive and challenging lesson planned, I appreciate that the lesson is fluid and adaptable to my particular needs/interests that week, whether it be because I have questions about a specific tactical exercise or master game we are reviewing, or because I have experienced a particularly memorable success or failure in my chess-play that I would like to review. The lessons logically and effectively build upon themselves so that your basic skills are solidified and bolster you as you move on to more complex theories and exercises. As an adult, with a hectic job, I am immensely appreciative of John's flexibility when it comes to arranging lessons and his ability keep me challenged and developing into a more formidable chess player.

I first met John at an unrelated event, but he really got me interested in Chess, and it has become an activity that I really love and enjoy due to his instruction. John's lessons are engaging, substantive, and honestly fun, and he's helped me improve my game dramatically. John is a great guy and an excellent instructor, and I would encourage anyone with even a passing interest in Chess (no matter the skill level) to give him a try.

I have taught chess at all levels for over 30 years. I have played competitive chess for over 45 years and achieved the national master title. Several of my students have achieved national ranking. Many others have improved their play and learned to love the game.

My approach to teaching chess is to help you think and solve problems over the board. Becoming familiar with tactical and positional themes will help you play better and also give you an appreciation for the beauty of chess and understand why it has endured.

About Lee
I am a semi-retired IT Professional working in the computer storage field. After spending 32 years at IBM I now work for a small software company as a consultant. My wife and I love to travel and we take several long trips every year. I stay active by working out, playing pickle ball and table tennis.

I am on the board of two chess related non-profit organizations. I am a certified chess tournament director and have organized and directed numerous local and national tournaments.

I achieved the National Master title with the US Chess Federation in 1991. These days I only compete infrequently and mostly play chess casually online.

Strong analytical skills.
I've been playing chess for 20 years
I've reached a 2020 elo on lichess
https://lichess.org/@/mog926
I estimate my elo rating in otb (over the board) to be somewhere between 2100-2300 and close to master level or even Grandmaster level for slower games.
I know a lot of cool ways to improve at chess and how to teach to get better at analysis and improving your chess/understanding/reviewing your games.
I would love to work with you and help boost your elo by hundreds of points (especially those under 1800 elo) or beginners/intermediate players.
I'm willing to teach all levels.

About Stephen
Currently looking for new students.
I teach piano, japanese, chess, go(weiqi/baduk), and meditation/self-improvement.
I am very proficient in all of the above subjects and have helped dozens of students reach their long-term goals over the years. I am also very patient and have taught children piano lessons for more than 10 years. As a learner I know how overwhelming new subject-matter could be and I tend to understand the pace that the student needs/wants to go at.
I feel a huge sense of accomplishment when I see my students improving. I also am constantly improving myself as a teacher so the lessons will only get better and the material should be easier to understand with time.
Let's master anything you want to work on, and have a lot of fun too :)
Thanks for reading!
-Stephen
