Do you write songs but keep getting stuck? Or maybe you've always wanted to write but don't know where to start? I've been writing songs for over a decade with 5+ albums on iTunes, Pandora, Spotify, and retail stores. From developing lyric ideas to song forms, I can help you craft your ideal song!

About Joshua
Hi! I'm Josh, a passionate music educator in Boston, MA. I have taught over 1000 lessons over the past three years to piano, voice, and theory students of all ages. From preparing for rock-vocal style auditions at Berklee College of Music to helping re-discovering the fun of classical piano lessons, there is nothing I enjoy more than working with students on achieving their goals. As a gigging musician and a lifetime student myself, I know what it takes to improve, master, and most importantly ENJOY your time at your instrument. Looking forward to helping you reach all your music goals!

About me:
I eat/breathe/sleep music. From writing and conducting my first A Capella piece in high school to playing in bands that have toured around the world, music is my passion and my life! I value nothing more than finding that passion in others an
d working together to turn musical fantasies into realities.

From grade school to high school I took rigorous classical piano lessons. In 2006-07 I attended two summer programs at Berklee College of Music where I studied jazz/rock performance, and continued to study jazz piano at Washington University.

At Boston University, I studied classical music composition/theory, and was accepted to for a dual degree in Music Composition, Psychology, but decided to pursue music as a minor in order to allow more time for gigging. Since relocating to Boston, I have performed 250+ shows in various ensembles around the greater Boston area.

I have much studies in pop and jazz and classical theory, including form and analysis, song structure, and music theory. I have an extensive library of music that I have written and performed.

About Scott
Scott D. was born in Arlington Heights, Illinois in 1967. He expressed a keen interest in music at an early age, and subsequently, began his studies with the clarinet, and percussion while performing in the school band. A short time after that, he decided guitar was going to be his instrument of choice, and began formal studies with blues man, Don Brown. After that, Scott moved on to study with session ace, Gary Blume. By the time we was 18, he began studies for what would be the first of his two degrees, at William Rainey Harper College. There he was mentored in both classical and jazz guitar under well known session player, and composer, Steven Suvada, and later continued with David Sussman, of the Lyric Opera in Chicago.

That year Scott went to Northern Illinois University to continue his studies for a second degree in Music
. There he studied under Fareed Haque, of Pangaea records, again obtaining both jazz and classical training. While at NIU, Scott took part in numerous jazz combos who performed extensively in the area. He has also had solo and mixed recitals at Harper, NIU and various other Chicagoland locations where he performed such pieces as: Heitor Villa Lobos’ Preludes # 1, 3 and 4, Mauro Giuliani's Grand Sonata Op. 25 for violin and guitar, and Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto in D Major for 2 violin Liuto e Basso Continuo, Allegro Giusto, Largo, Allegretto.

On the more contemporary side he turned his attention to virtuoso guitar innovators, performing the works: Trademark, by Eric Johnson, Always With Me, Always With You, by Joe Satriani, Over My Head, by Douglas T. Pinnick, Ty Tabor, and Terry W Gaskill, Variations on a Theme of Van Halen, arranged by Scott and Tom Hapeman, as well as Scott’s original compositions, Nowhere Fast and Flight of The Monkey!

Scott played in many important master classes including the popular duo The Assad Brothers, and The Washington Guitar Quintet. He was also a member of the guitar ensemble from Harper College that was featured on cable television on numerous occasions.

Scott has been writing, recording, and performing in every genre imaginable for more than 20 years. He began in his teens performing in cover bands, then in college he founded a self titled fusion based instrumental trio. Later he joined the groups Equinox, The Bulletproof Babies and The Liberty Hounds. He is now writing, recording, and producing original compositions in his home studio, as well as actively performing classical guitar recitals and private events.

Scott has been teaching guitar, bass, drums, piano, and vocals for over 20 years at his private studio, Strings and Things, as well as at such locations as: Northern Illinois University, Village Music in Buffalo Grove, Beautiful Music, Music and Arts Center in Naperville, and Austin Music. He has taught classes from 2 students up to as many as 17 students at the Elk Grove Village, Palatine, Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect, Lisle and Prospect Heights Park Districts. He has developed innovative methods for learning sight reading, chord structure, harmony, voice leading, key signatures, scales and modes, aural skills, theory/composition and technique through learning the music you like to listen to, right from the CD in the actual lesson! His preferred techniques include Mel Bay methods for guitar, and chord diagram books, Segovia's diatonic major and minor scales, Segovia/Ricordi editions of Carcassi Op. 6 No. 25, and Fernando Sors 20 studies, Giuliani’s 120 right hand studies and Christopher Parkening methods. In addition, he prefers to use the Batersby drum methods, Mel Bay bass methods, and Alfred’s piano library.

Scott is available immediately for instruction in guitar, bass, drums, vocals and piano, Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays. Other days of the week can be arranged if needed.

If you are a poet, and wish to put your words to song, sign up for some lessons! If you've got a song in your heart, but no words to put to it, sign up for lessons! I approach song-writing from both angles!

About Stephanie
I am a career musician, and conservatory trained violin, piano and vocal instructor with over 25 years teaching experience, and a resume spanning many pages. I also am a well endorsed composer. Furthermore, I LOVE teaching! I am a competition judge, member of National Music Teachers Association, and Suzuki Association of the Americas. I have proven results, as documented on my students YouTube channel. With my instruction, you will learn quickly and most importantly, correctly, saving you time and resources as you reach your musical goals. Fact: One of the only activities that activates, stimulates, and uses the entire brain is music, so let's get started!

Some people have difficulty reaching a teachers' studio. For this reason, I have perfected my ability to teach via Skype or FaceTime. It is an advantage for my students to b
e instructed by a quality teacher. It's worth a try, isn't it?

Please note: I only accept weekly lesson students. Also, due to my performances, I'm not always able to this calendar up to date....so when you request a lesson time, allow me to communicate with you, if we need to adjust it a bit. It almost always works out if you don't mind doing that.

*** Lesson Details ***
All the students on my Student YouTube channel who have studied under three years, are practicing 2 hours a week, and you will have a similar result. That's 20 minutes a day, 6 days a week. Students under 5 practice about 10-15 minutes a day.

Please have an assignment book that lies flat, and keep it next to your music books as you practice between lessons. My instructions are very detailed to insure your best progress.

*** Studio Equipment ***
For on-line lessons, you will need a quiet place, and please test your sound and video prior to beginning of lesson. For students under 13 or so, do have a parent or caregiver taking notes while we work together.

*** Specialties ***
I have much experience with various learning styles, and in fact, am featured in a documentary made of one of my autistic students.

She asks that you practice 20 minutes a day. Since she inspires you to improve and do your best, it is easy to practice longer than requested. She has brought joy back into my life through music. Writing songs is not as difficult as it may seem. I have guided many students through the process. It is truly a fun and creative time for both student and teacher.
Some familiarity with harmonic and rhythmic concepts, as well as some analytic terminology is necessary to get the ideas out of your head and into the air. I like to start by analyzing the songs of others and discussing them. Then we get down to the brass tacks and talk about the song as if it were no different than the blueprint of a building.

About David
My name is David and I'm a professional musician who just moved to North Austin. I came from Cincinnati, where I went to the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, taught dozens of students at all levels and played regular gigs every weekend. I have been teaching for over fifteen years, and I'm looking to get a few new students.
I teach guitar, piano, bass guitar and even upright bass. If it's a tutor you are looking for I can also teach music theory and appreciation. I have a knack for teaching young people, probably because I was young when I started my musical journey. I've been very successful at inspiring a student's love of music and instilling the patience required to take on the challenge of playing an instrument.
The first thing I like to do is get to know you, the music you enjoy and your goals. In a way, I l
ike to begin by letting the student lead.
In addition to learning from you, I intend to present you with new information, to try and broaden your musical tastes and teach you how to be an active listener.

For about five years now, I have been actually completing playable music. The past couple years, my school's jazz combo has even taken a couple of my songs to compete with at local jazz festivals. I have studied primarily under the fantastic composer, guitarist and teacher, Tom Hynes the past couple years. Prior to my studies, I was self taught, as a way of expanding my improvisation. I write primarily for Chamber ensembles, Jazz small ensembles, and even some pop music. I use Handwritten, Finale and Logic pro for notation, so whichever is most convenient, I'll use. In lessons, I will ask students to bring in material they have written each week, which we will review together. I'll add some suggestions, but will not change the integrity of the music, just refine it. We shall look at composing in different styles, as well as expanding upon the styles in which the student is most interesting in pursuing.

About Eric
Hi! I'm Eric, a Saxophonist, Composer, Singer, and Teacher that was born and raised in Southern California. I've been playing the saxophone for over ten years now, writing music for as long as I can remember, and singing since I was in elementary school. I play for a variety of groups in Los Angeles, and sometimes perform in L.A. and surrounding areas at venues such as the LightHouse, Saint Rocke, Avalon, and the Baked Potato.

I keep my lessons fun, efficient, and applicable. I give students assignments to work on, not only so they don't forget what we talk about, but also so they can also expand upon the concepts given in lessons, (which familiarizes them more with the information). I look forward to helping you unlock your potential!

Songwriting is tricky. There are formulas one can use, but do they work for you? What about the dreaded writer's block? What if you've never written a song? What do you do if you can't finish a song you've started? How do you keep from getting too repetitive in your style? All of these questions and more have valid and applicable answers and exercises. I can teach the standard songwriting structure, but I do more than that. I help you find your true creative style. We'll discover your favorite and most effective uses of words and melody. You have a creative voice that is truly unique. Now let's help you use it.
This is a popular subject for combining with other subjects into a single lesson plan. For some students this has justified a 90 minute lesson. I have adult students who spend as much as two hours at a time with me.

About Phil
I've taught both privately and in the classroom (in schools from Pre-K to college, and through workshops), and have been a working musician and teacher for more than 25 years. I have a degree in music from Columbia College Chicago (Summa Cum Laude). My students have included everyone from absolute beginners to working professionals like myself. Many of my students have gone on to careers in music as performers, songwriters and/or teachers.

My approach in private instruction involves tailoring the lessons to the specific needs of each student, while making sure that he/she has the knowledge and technique to succeed in their creative endeavors. Whether it's a hobby or a potential career, I leave nothing out. You will learn the entire instrument. In cases where a student works in more than one subject, one session can typically be applied
to all/both of them. I strive to help every student find their own creative voice, while building the skill sets required to work in any style of music.

I also offer group lessons for 3 or more students. For friends at similar skill levels, this can offer a fun and more affordable way to learn a subject. It also serves as an additional motivator as the students in the group feed off of each other for ideas and inspiration.

Please feel free to contact me with the "Ask Phil a Question" button on my profile here. This can include questions about my method, or regarding days and times for lessons. What you see in my availability here is based on my schedule away from TakeLessons. I have students elsewhere and perform shows regularly. I may have additional times available and tend to have some flexibility. I teach worldwide online. Just ask.

As soon as you're ready to book lessons, you can use the Green Button after selecting your area of study, day and time. I will receive a notification that you've signed up. I will then confirm with you and send a questionnaire regarding your lesson needs within 48 hours.

Thanks for your interest.

I look forward to working with you!

Phil is a fantastic guitar teacher. My teenage daughter has had a few teachers over the years, but he’s the first to help her learn to read actual music, teach her to restring her guitar, and provide a true musician’s perspective that keeps her interested and excited to learn. His focus on classical as a springboard for all other music genres is refreshing. We are thrilled to have found this gem of an instructor, his love for music and guitar is infectious and inspiring.

I started voice lessons which turned into combined voice and guitar lessons with Phil almost two months ago, and I've had an awesome experience! I came in nervous with crippling stage fright, but Phil has taught me to own it and realize that it's normal. He's a super cool dude with great stories and crazy amounts of music knowledge and experience. He is helping me find my true personal voice, which no vocal coach has ever helped me with. Although we get down to business and work, there's also sure to be laughs (and tears... but good tears, don't get me wrong here!) during every lesson. Would highly recommend!!!! Phil roxxxxx!!! 8)
