My daughter 7yrs took lessons from Karen for 8 months. She was so patient and kind. My girl loved her and her teaching style.
I would have given 5 stars if she had got a real piano, not an electronic one.

Quick note on my passion for learning as a way of life ~

As a passionate lifelong learner, researcher, educator, tutor and coach, I embrace an unbounded curiosity of wonder and never ending exploration of an interdisciplinary approach to the scientific methods of learning, and acquiring knowledge that extend far beyond my university studies, into living my life highly engaged in as much experiential (first person) learning as possible. I love asking fresh, invigorating, boldly curious, audaciously barrier-busting, status-qua daring questions, as I feel passionately that, as Dr. Albert Einstein shared, "The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity."

About William
I am math teacher, father and grandfather. I start tutoring when I was in high school and then graduated with a bachelor's degree in mathematics in the late seventies. Later I earned a master's degree in engineering. I have taught for decades and I also had the opportunity to work as an engineer and programmer over the course of two decades. I now teach part time at colleges and tutor part time.

I teach grade school through college and the approach I use has been very helpful for students who have had trouble in math. I have students write the steps with words instead of just working examples.

A student recently wrote:

Mr. Diss took my hardest subject and broke it down so it was easier to understand. He shows clear examples of how to the problems and if I didn’t understand something he was quick to respond to my emails. I hones
tly have to say that this is the first time in my life I felt like I could truly understand math and not just hope to scrape by.

About Julie
GENERAL: I enjoy getting to know my students and their specific interests and quirks, and incorporating those into lessons to help folks better connect with and get excited about the material. I specialize in confidence-building and will be with you every step of the way as you not only gain skills, but perhaps face and overcome some emotional barriers or frustrations. I like to make lessons playful, fun, and relevant to how you want to use these tools in the world.

SINGING AND MUSIC LESSONS: In addition to providing technical training, I believe that singing is about liberation and expression, and have had successes in helping students to find their unique voices through overcoming vocal anxieties. I both work with students who are preparing for auditions and who play in professional bands, and also with students who have only ev
er sung in the shower and just want to get more comfortable using their own voice for fun. I also specialize in teaching music theory (including how to read music, rhythm practice, and harmony), playing an instrument and singing at the same time, and songwriting coaching. I degree in music from Brown University, have been a professional, performing musician for 12 years, and have been teaching private lessons and classes for 8 years.

For those in bands: I specialize in harmony and can do consultation sessions with you and/or your band to help with blending, finding harmonies that work for your respective vocal ranges and for the flow of the song, and teaching skills for finding and building harmonies.

MATH: As a middle and high school student, I didn't believe I was "good" at math. It wasn't until I was an adult and was hired as a math tutor - and later promoted to Assistant Director - of a tutoring company that I realized that was a belief that had held me back. Many kids and young adults struggle with confidence around math, and having had experience with that myself I use tools that help meet students where they're at and support them in building enthusiasm for math and confidence in themselves. In addition to providing tangible math skills (I have not only been tutoring Algebra, Geometry, SAT prep, elementary and middle school math for 5 years, but have also helped run a math tutoring company in which I built year-long curricula for grades K-12), I help students feel that math is within their grasp and can be approached with curiosity rather than fear and low self-esteem.

I had no idea when we signed up for SAT prep lessons with Julie, the level of help we would get. Julie went so far above and beyond what you would expect a tutor to do. During the lessons, she was always incredibly encouraging and focused. She explained things in a way that just made more sense. And then in between lessons, she sent problems like the ones we had trouble with to help solidify what was learned. She sent links to other sample problems and communicated regularly about the progress being made. I couldn’t rave enough about Julie!

About Eve
I like to keep lessons practical and positive - really focusing on the needs and goals of my students while keeping things lighthearted and fun. Learning students' interests also helps me to personal lessons and keep students motivated.

I have over 15 years of experience teaching English as a Second Language to adults and students. I have taught many one-on-one tutorials with highly personalized goals, mixed level continuing education courses, and college courses with over 20 students from a variety of language and cultural backgrounds. My students and clients have ranged from basic beginners, who speak virtually no English, to advanced students looking to improve writing and conversational skills.

In addition to teaching all levels of students, I can focus on the following language goals: grammar, accent reduction (pronunciation and i
ntonation), speaking (conversation, idioms/slang), writing (academic, professional, business), and cultural nuances specific to a client's unique needs.

About William
I have been tutoring since 2014 when I worked in Spanish elementary school. Prior to that, I graduated from Exeter Univeristy with a Master's in Social and Political Philosophy and a Bachelor's degree in Politics from the University of Leicester. I also was employed by the prestigous tutoring service Titanium Tutors in London.

I teach Philosophy, Political Sciences, and History up to advanced level having covered these subjects extensivley over my college career. I can teach Spanish up to intermediate level having lived in Spain and studied at school, as well as English, Geography, and Religion. I am also happy teaching writing skills and preparing for exams.

I believe the best way for students to learn is through a dialogue, for them to show they understand. To acheive this, I avoid lecturing and rote learning. Instead, I set out cl
ear learning objectives at the start and then ask appropriate questions to ascertain the student's understanding throughout our lessons together. This way my lessons are personable, and geared towards the individual student's needs.

I also believe learning should be enjoyable. I create a fun, enthusiastic lesson environment. I have worked with students of all ages and have built good rapport with them all. I look forward to getting to know you and starting working together soon!
