About Michael
Michael is a freelance musician based in the Portland metropolitan area. His diverse skill set allows him to perform in a variety of musical groups. Michael is hired regularly to perform for: jazz and cover bands, weddings, corporate events, musicals, and studio sessions. He also leads and writes music for his own band that performs regularly in the Portland metropolitan area. He attended Mount Hood Community College and Portland State University. Michael graduated with a B.S. in Biology and Jazz Performance.
Many describe Michael as genuine and passionate. He has a youthful, energetic teachi
ng style that works well with most students. Michael’s creativity and patience allow him to help his students grasp tough concepts and improve at a faster rate than they would on their own.
Michael’s practice philosophy is simple. Make practice enjoyable and efficient. He has experienced the common pitfall of practicing scales for many hours only to retain little or nothing. Michael shows his students techniques to focus, and get more done with less wasted time. Lessons are customized to meet the student’s goals and learning style.
Michael ensures that every student will have the skills to be a complete musician that is comfortable in any musical genre or setting. He enjoys working with students of all abilities. Michael relates to the absolute beginner and experienced musician equally.

This guy is the most enthusiastic, skillful, upbeat musician and teacher. We have had three lessons and already my son wants to turn 30 minute lessons into 45 minutes and I will happily do so. Thanks Michael for nurturing mu son's love of saxophone.

Michael is quite special. He is taking this 57 year old who has never played an instrument nor read music and trying to work a miracle! Three lessons in, I know that this is going to be fun learning with him. I also know that I will be able to play the Saxophone soon. An inspiring teacher!!!

About Lisa
Hello:
I have been a guitar and voice instructor for over 15 years, and a piano teacher for 6, my piano program is the most popular. I am able to get you playing in no time. I have also tutored elementary students and worked for Montessori's for many years. I really love this job! I also teach beginning violin.

I had a real hard time learning guitar when I was growing up because of an accident to my left arm, but I wanted to play so much that I was able to overcome it. Because of this, I think I have learned to be a very patient teacher. I see students who get frustrated and think that it'
s too hard to play the guitar or piano, but I promise you, my program is fun and simple. I can show you the steps to success. I have taught over 1000 students in a variety of cities from Minneapolis Minnesota, to Los Angeles California, and now Portland Oregon. This is what I do. It is all I do. I have individually taught over 28,000 lessons total, so I have dealt with every kind of person including those with disabilities. I have taught every age from 5-70. I am also a performer, and I own my own music publishing company through ASCAP (American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers). I currently teach Piano to level 4, so if you are a beginner, you will love my new program. Music is my life, I can help you make your dream of playing a musical instrument come true, even in a few short lessons. You can do it! I prefer to have serious students and would like to audition you before setting you in a schedule as I have many students waiting. Therefore I now choose which ones I feel will be a good fit. This benefits you as well, as I want you to be happy with your lessons. I have worked for Take Lessons a long time and have a good track record.

* I hold recitals twice a year in May and November. Check out my videos.

*** Lesson Details ***
The thing I have learned over the years teaching guitar, piano or voice, is that everyone learns differently. I have taught in family situations where there are two or three siblings learning at the same time, but each sibling learned the skills that are unique to them. Some students are better at playing rhythm, some students are better at lead, some students are better with barre chords. As long as you are enjoying playing the guitar, you will be able to grow in every area at your own pace. Music should be a fun and rewarding experience. My lessons usually include songs that you like to play and are at your level of playing ability. We can play as a band too. When you are ready, I love to bring out the drum machine while you play guitar and I play the bass notes, giving you the feel of a live group situation that can make learning at your lesson more fun. But if that's not for you, we can just play guitar together too, whatever makes you feel the most comfortable is how you will be able to learn the best. Tell me what you need I am always here to help you.

My 11 yr old daughter has only had one lesson thus far but I am so impressed. Lisa was so nice and positive and really got to work fast with my daughter and had her playing simple songs on the first day! Quite a surprise to me! She came home to practice more and was so excited about being able to take lessons, which is not a regular occurrence for her. I am usually trying to get her to do things but Lisa showed her quickly how capable she was and how fun it could be.
Thank you Lisa!

I am friendly and like to inspire my students to find their own best potential. Suitable challenges are fun and needed to keep the personal progress going on. "No suffering in my studio!" means that the process of learning needs to be enjoyable but at the same time I am asking the students to give their best effort. Setting frequent goals in form of group classes and recitals keeps us in full sail and teach us to enjoy the act of playing both alone and in front of friendly audience.
I teach both classical and Suzuki methods. I like to keep my students musically well fed and encourage exploring music reading and music theory next to practical skills. I stir my students toward high standard personal level in their studies, an ingredient from Finnish cultural climate.

Karen was a wonderful teacher to my 6 year old! She was very calm, attentive and flexible with my daughter's learning needs. She was able to start my daughter off on the right foot with love of piano, having her play short songs and duets, learn notes and reading music. We moved but are grateful to have had her as a teacher.

I love to help anyone who has been told they're not able to play guitar, has quit out of frustration, or been told they're too old or too young to play.

Each lesson is customized to your learning style and different for everyone depending on what you want to learn. Most of my students like to learn from scratch which would include the following:
In the first 3 lessons you will learn basic guitar fundamentals, basic 1-4-5 song progressions (the stuff that 85% of all music we listen to is made up of), left hand / right hand coordination, picking techniques, how to str
um, mute, & play notes on the guitar.

We can play as a band too. When you are ready, I love to bring out the drum or backing tracks to your favorite artists songs while you play guitar and I play what your not, giving you the feel of a live group situation that can make learning at your lesson more fun.

Genres include Acoustic, Blues, Country, R&B, Funk, Latin, Jazz, Rock, Pop and more.
