Knowing at the age of 5 that music was my life, by being brought up surrounded by praise music and gospel, my early exposure to music helped me to find every Instrument and style just my thing! I wanted to play everything and learn all aspects of music. I started with singing in the children's choir and then developed into piano and music theory. At the age of 12 I began to learn classical guitar, and at 15 took on various styles like Flamenco, Jazz and Rock. I graduated from High School having played in the school band achieving recognition In national Institutions Like IAJE (International Association for Jazz Education) and state band finals. I was also composing from a very early age, and at 18 released my first album (self-titled) which can still be heard and purchased today through various music outlets, since i have released over 15
albums with various ensembles and bands. In college I already knew from my previous experience that I wanted to teach and pass on the joy that music brought to my life. I studied Music Theory and Jazz and finished my degree in Music Education. I have been teaching all in all for about 14 yrs. And I have enjoyed every minute I have spent with my students learning as much from them, as them from me. I am looking forward to meeting new and eager students who really want to bring their inner music out to share with the rest of us music aficionados! and develop their skills to the peak of their abilities.
*** Lesson Details *** My teaching method ranges depending on the student. I believe in my experience that everyone learns differently, therefore everyone develops at their own pace. I try to find key strengths in each student and expose this to their advantage, using their abilities to further develop their skills, this method has shown the most promising results and students usually find themselves playing and performing just a couple of months after their first lessons. Part of my method involves a lot of performance and recital opportunities to help break any fears and inhibitions a student may bring with them. Music is about sharing, so an early exposure to this method helps to strengthen and stabilize a core acceptance of a students style and path, giving them and those close to them a very clear picture of their development and achievements.

The creative process, to me, is the single obvious reason we exist in this world. We create and share, learn and interpret, build on previous ideas and inspire others to perfect upon this process. It is no doubt a very humbling experience to realize you are part of it all. During this process you come to realize how important you are as an Individual, how there is no other vessel like you in this world, nor has there ever been or ever will. You are here now and your voice, your talent, your gift is an instrument to the great choir of the human spirit. No one but you can relate this, a reason to be, to create, to give.

I only work with singers of ages 12+ in my private voice studio because I believe that younger children receive the most benefit by singing in a choir with their peers, rather than taking private lessons for their young, under-developed voices. Better instrument options for private lessons for younger children are piano, violin, or guitar - which in order to play, require finger coordination and theory comprehension. I assign music theory and ear-training exercises to my voice students during lessons, as being able to read music well is essential to becoming a well-rounded, independent musician.

Learning piano late in life!
It has been such a pleasant experience to take lessons from Jill. She is very positive and easy to understand in her instruction. I am a beginner in piano, and I feel I have learned a lot after only 3 lessons. She would be a wonderful piano teacher, no matter what your age!
I help speakers develop powerful, authentic voices by combining knowledge of their instrument, vocal health practices and helping them develop the technique to easily sustain their sound. Between performing and my own artistic studies, I have been taking the occasional private voice student since 1997, mostly via referrals from friends and other students. While living in California, one of my voice teachers requested me as her regular substitute at Culver City and Santa Monica Music Schools from 2008-2012, which I felt deeply honored. She said she trusted me with their voices, which encouraged me into full-time voice teaching practice. In June 2012, I returned to Minneapolis and began teaching in my home studio through music services like Take Lessons. Past projects include producing a vocal showcase at The Ritz Theater, musical direction & choreography for a school's 2016 production of the Wizard of Oz; assisting students to prepare for local & national auditions like La Banda, The Voice & American Idol; prepping singers for studio recordings and congratulating a new student who's stepped out of the chorus to land her first lead role!

I have experienced improvement in my confidence after 5 lessons with Arlys as compared to a decrease in confidence after working with another instructor for near one year (not a TL instructor). I now realize the ability to sing and play piano does not automatically equate to the ability to teach and most especially, the ability to teach someone who was not born a natural singer (such as myself). Arlys is that instructor that embraces where you are and understands the anatomy of the vocal instrument and the science behind making beautiful music (no matter your skills or lack-of). Arlys brings to the table a multitude of experiences that support her teaching style and learning for students with diverse singing backgrounds or no singing background. In a recent session with Arlys, I was introduced to "rock star monitor" which after incorporating it into our lesson, was a boost to my confidence and performance. Arlys is one of my favorite 5 instructors and the only one I am working with one-on-one at this time. I look forward to each lesson and hope she will continue with this teaching platform for a long time to come.
Learn good breath control and resonance to strengthen your speaking voice using vocal warm-ups, posture and speaking exercises. We will look at your speaking voice in terms of pitch, timbre, volume, pacing, register and prosody. Using a talk that you are practicing, readings or improvising real life situations, you will have lots of practice. I recommend adults take from 45 minutes to 1 hour lessons weekly for skill building. The price of lessons DECREASES by 10% after each 5 lesson purchased for the first 15 lessons.
I have a Master’s in Opera Performance from the Boston and New England Conservatories as well as graduating from Vocal Performance programs at Boston University and Western Washington University. I have sung professionally with Boston Lyric Opera, Children’s Theater Companies, churches and synagogue and have toured on the east coast as well as Athens, Greece. Premiering new music is a specialty. I can help you prepare your pieces for auditions. My students have successful auditions for college opera and music theater programs, and as choir soloists.

We will choose music that interests you and helps to build your voice starting with basics before moving to more complex and challenging music. Understanding music theory and sight-reading will help you get the most out of your singing. After 3 - 6 months you should have a good command of breathing and an understanding of how to sing with an expressive tone. For the advanced student, I can help you work on trouble spots and give you tools to help with the changes that voices naturally go through. Students should print out their favorite popular songs from such services as Music Notes website. I am well versed in the Alexander technique and possess materials that will take a student beyond what is only in my memory. There are many physical exercises that will open up your stage voice and show you how to penetrate that back wall of the theatre.
