I have been performing and teaching lessons as my full time career for over 10 years. I am new to Portland, and I'm very excited to establish my teaching studio here.

I teach ages 7 through adult, beginners through advanced, and enjoy customizing each student's lessons according to their own goals. I often include different genres and styles of music, mindfulness, meditation, and body awareness practices, ear training, improvisation, and music theory.

About Emily
With over twenty years of flute experience, Emily H. is new to the Portland area. Emily has served as principal flutist of the Union Symphony in Charlotte, NC and flutist with the Alla Prima Flute and Harp Duo and the Quintessence Wind Quintet. She also has taught flute for over 15 years, and is now accepting students in Portland.

Emily holds a Bachelor of Music degree, summa cum laude, from the Hartt School in Hartford, Connecticut.

With a holistic mind/body approach to music, Emily has supplemented her academic study with further education in Alexander Technique, yoga, body mapping, and mindfulness meditation. She incorporates these techniques into her own playing and into her teaching.

In 2014, Emily H. and her duo partner Kirsten Carrell Osborne released their Alla Prima Duo debut album Song To the Waking Sun, which includes
music inspired by the natural and spiritual world.

I've been playing the flute for almost twenty years and have been teaching for nearly that long. I create a teaching environment that is safe and supportive. Regardless of skill level, my students learn various genres of music and will develop a keen sense of flute pedagogy and technique.

About Adam
Hello! My name is Adam and I'm so happy to be a part of this community! I've moved here from the east coast where I was a teacher and co-director for music programs at a K-8 music school for 6 years. Currently, I'm a director for a music program in North Portland. During my almost two decades of teaching around the world, I've come across many students of all ages with various levels. Many have won competitions and have participated in regional bands. I’ve graduated with honors from New England Conservatory of Music with a Masters in flute performance. I’ve studied in Switzerland with James Galway and in London with William Bennett, and in the USA with Tara O’Connor and Paula Robison. While living in Germany, I studied at the Hochschule fur Musik und Darstellende in Frankfurt with Thaddeus Watson. With my verse background in performi
ng and music education, I’ve found unique and fun ways to teach students and have them exceed in any of their endeavors.

I like to give students a good solid theoretical foundation first, then build to confirm with the students specific goals. For example, if the student is into a particular type of music (jazz, soul, classical...) I tailor the lessons to meet those goals.

About Jeff
Starting with my first music lessons at age 7, I've spent the last 40 plus years studying and performing music. I studied classical guitar with well-known Cuban virtuoso, Carlos Molina & Adam Holtzman. I've performed with some of the music world’s greats such as blues legend Bo Diddley, The Platters, The Coasters, Stephen Stills (Crosby, Stills & Nash), Bonnie Raitt as well as jazz greats Randy Brecker, Red Rodney, Ira Sullivan, Pam Laws & Marcus Roberts. Since moving to the Portland area in April 2015 I've performed with the Portland Wind Symphony, The Hillsboro Symphony, The Minidoka Swing Band, for Nike at the Olympic trials, on jazz night at WineUp on Williams downtown. & innumerable private performances. As a teacher, I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Florida State University and after teaching middle school in F
lorida, spent 18 years as a teacher trainer in Japan for a major English school chain specializing in children ages 1 ½ on up.

I hired Paul last November to help my daughter, Kara, with her middle school NYSSMA audition. Paul assessed my daughter, asking her to play a song she already knew and took notes on what she was already good at and what to improve on. When Paul taught Kara her NYSSMA solo, he was very meticulous, paid much attention to Kara's playing, and taught her techniques on how to correct certain mistakes and methods on how to improve what was already good to make her stick out. On the date of her NYSSMA audition, she was very confident, got a perfect score, and made it into the All-County Band :).
I could not recommend Paul more. His experience and methods of teaching technique especially caught my eye, and is what differentiates him from other instructors. He is very patient, kind, honest, and sits down with you to set realistic expectations and goals and how to achieve them. I still book him today for my daughter who is now in High School and has even made All-State Bands because of Paul. He may be in college, but he has music wisdom way beyond his years!!

Thank you Paul for all you do,
Peggy Ghiraldi
