Dr. Carl S. will be teaching at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical replacement beginning August 2017. His duties include graduate saxophone lessons, graduate music theory review, graduate saxophone pedagogy, and saxophone studio class. Carl has an online music studio through TakeLessons, where he teaches several instruments privately and in group settings including saxophone, guitar, oboe, music theory, flute, oboe, and piano.

Prior to working at OSU, Carl was Instructor of Jazz and Saxophone at South Dakota State University from 2014-2017. His responsibilities included directing the annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles I-II, Jazz Combo, Jazz Improvisation lessons, Jazz Pedagogy, online Jazz Appreciation,
private saxophone lessons, saxophone quartets, private oboe lessons, and group guitar class.

Carl completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in saxophone performance at the University of Kansas in 2014, and his Master of Music Pedagogy and Performance from Oklahoma State University in 2011. He graduated from Harrah High School in 2002, earned his Bachelor of Music Education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 2008, and was a 5th-12th grade Head Band Director at Fairview Public schools. He is currently a member of the North American Saxophone Alliance, the Jazz Education Network, Music Teachers National Association, treasurer of the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, and an Honorary Member of Tau Beta Sigma. He has held previous memberships with Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association.

While at KU, Carl was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, assisting with the KU Jazz Festival, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Carl was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Carl has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Carl went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Carl was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Carl was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen,Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Carl performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr.,Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

Carl's primary saxophone instructors have been Vince Gnojek, Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert, Dr. Ann Bradfield, Dr. Keith Talley, and William Rodney Hull. He has had additional instruction in lessons and masterclasses from Gary Foster, Dr. Joseph Murphy, Dr. Michael Cox, Bob Sheppard, Johnny Salinas, Dr. Kimberly Goddard Loeffert, Dr. Geoffrey Deibel, Dr. Jonathan Nichol, Dr. Griffin Campbell, Dr. James Laughlin, and Dr. David Dees. Carl's jazz directors have included Dan Gailey, Bob McCurdy, Dr. Jonathan Martin, Dr. Keith Talley, and Dr. Terry Segress.

​Carl lives in Brookings, South Dakota. He enjoys recording several instruments in his home studio and composing new music. His compositions that have been performed include his big band arrangement of Cat Battles by Joshua Redman,September in the Refrain (alto saxophone and electronics), Funk-o-matic (jazz combo), Smooth (jazz combo), and The Deadline Arrives at Dawn (alto saxophone and electronics). As an advocate of new music involving the saxophone, he has participated in a commissioning consortium for Alone Together by composer David MacDonald through Kick Starter. In 2013, Carl performed the premier of Cuento #3 by Nelson Ramirez Diaz. During summer of 2014, he recorded selections from Dr. John Walker's "The Alto Saxophone in the Attic," published by Carl Fischer. At the 10th Annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival in 2015, Carl directed SDSU Jazz Ensemble I's premier of Dog, Tired by David von Kampen.

​Dr. Carl is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist. He hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 (ND, SD, NE, MN, IA) Conference at South Dakota State University on March 17-18, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Carl performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Carl will be performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale.

My goal as a flute teacher is to give each student a very well rounded and thorough understanding of the instrument. Lessons will be tailored to each student and will include the following: knowledge of instrument care/maintenance, tone production, technique (scales, etudes, etc), musicality, music theory, and a variety of repertoire from classical to pop.

About Sheila
Sheila's interest in music began at the age of seven when she began private instruction in classical piano, and by the age of ten, she began playing the flute. Sheila received her Bachelor of Music with a degree in Music Education from the University of Redlands, where she studied flute with Sara Andon. There, she performed in the university's Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and Orchestra. During her third year at university, she studied abroad at the Zoltan Kodaly Pedagogical Institute of Music in Kecskemet, Hungary.

Sheila has performed in many different venues around the world such as Tivoli Gardens in Denmark, the Edinburgh Trade Center in Scotland, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Greek Theater in Los Angeles and the Valley Performing Arts Center in Northridge, CA.

3, Sheila graduated from California State University, Northridge with a Masters degree in Flute Performance where she studied flute with Sandra Kipp. At CSUN, she performed in the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Northridge Flute Quartet, and various chamber ensembles. She currently resides in Irvine and teaches private lessons in flute and piano.

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal as a music educator is to foster excellence in the art of music through private instruction. I have worked with students of all ages ranging from 5 to older adults.

In my studio, students will learn to read music and have a well rounded music education. This means that we will work on a variety of things such as music theory, music history, and a wide range of repertoire (from Beethoven to the Beatles!) While I have high expectations for my students, I do my best to keep the lessons relaxed and lighthearted. My hope is that the student is always engaged and interested during lessons.

My three expectations:

1. Come prepared both mentally and physically (this is especially important for flutists-- make sure to warm up prior to the lesson!)

2. Don't be afraid to ask questions and make mistakes. This is non-threatening territory, I'm here to guide you and help you. Remember that mistakes happen, we're human. Just make sure that you learn from those mistakes so as not to make the same ones and grow from each experience.

3. For parents-- BE INVOLVED! I can't tell you how often I've seen younger students excel when their parents were proactive in the experience. This means encouraging them to practice, coming up with a rewards system, and sometimes sitting in on the lesson to take notes so that you can work on what we did during the lesson at home together. It's difficult for music teachers to compete with iPads, Playstations and television, so let's get creative together!

*** Required Materials ***
Flute students must own a well maintained flute, as an instrument that is out of adjustment causes frustration and can initiate bad habits. In addition, the student must also have a metronome and tuner, a music stand, flute repertoire, and an assignment book for me to write down each week's assignments.

Piano students must have a working acoustic piano or digital piano in their home for piano lessons. The student must also have a metronome, piano repertoire, and an assignment book for each week's assignments.

My name is Stephanie, I am a teaching-artist from El Paso, Texas. I currently reside, perform and teach in the Boston and greater Boston area.

I am a recent graduate of The New England Conservatory of Music with my Masters in Saxophone Performance. I received my Bacherlors in Music Education from New Mexico State University.

I am devoted and dedicated to helping find each of my students strengths, weaknesses and style of learning. Once I have identified these traits, I am able to develop lessons and repertoire that helps each students become the most efficient learner and best musician they can be.

I pride myself in creating a fun and safe learning environment in which I establish a firm musical foundation for my students. Lessons include: scales, etudes, articulation, dynamic and sight reading exercises, standard saxophone repertoire, recording and analyzing performances, saxophone/music history lessons, and exploration of the sounds, genres and artists of the saxophone.

Stephanie is not only an incredible saxophonist, but a great teacher as well. She's cheerful and upbeat and really encouraging! I really enjoyed working with her over the course of a semester on a directed goal. I found her teaching methodology to be very flexible and she was open to finding different ways to help me learn to play a vibrato. I also learned many technical details about playing saxophone that surprised me and made me a better player. I would recommend her with enthusiasm.

Formally educated in flute, piano, percussion, and vocal performance, Mr. Smith has won several regional and national competitions on each of his primary instruments, and has had the privilege of studying with and participating in masterclasses led by some of the the top artists in the world.

Before moving to his current position as Bass Section Leader at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, he enjoyed a long relationship playing in recital at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart (where he also served as Bass Soloist and Section Leader) with Dr. Patrick Carlin, piano/organ. He can also be heard in performance (on both piano and flute) with the Quux Collective, a Richmond based new music ensemble directed by Dr. Sheri Oyan. Most recently, he has been a featured artist with Classical Revolution RVA, a group whose mission is to spread classical musi
c outside of the concert hall and into the community. Anthony has also sung (and played piano and percussion) with the Virginia Chorale, a Norfolk, VA professional choral ensemble led by Chuck Woodward.

Mr. Smith has worked as pianist, vocal coach, musical director, and orchestrator for several professional theater companies across the country. Anthony has enjoyed a long collaboration with Virginia Repertory Theatre, where his credits include The Color Purple, Nunsense, Blue Ridge Mountain Christmas, Always Patsy Cline, The Producers, The Music Man, Fiddler on the Roof, and several others! Anthony is also the Musical Director in Residence at the University of Richmond and Maggie Walker Governor's School.

An active proponent of new music, Mr. Smith has been involved in the world premieres of several new operas and musicals, most recently "The Snow Maiden" by Andrew Haile Austin and "Kept" by Kristin Kuster and Megan Levad. Anthony is also the Music Director and Conductor of the National Tour of Felipe DeLeon's "Noli Me Tangere", one of two operas originally composed in Tagalog.

Anthony is Conductor of the Peninsula Youth Winds, a group comprised of advanced high school students with an interest in the wind band repertoire.

Mr. Smith is a strong believer in the importance of music education, and maintains an active private studio comprised of flute, percussion, piano, and voice students. I love helping students succeed, and to feel a sense of accomplishment as well as having a good time while playing. I try to make every lesson something exciting to look forward to, leaving them wanting to practice before every lesson, whether it be learning a new piece, improvisations, singing, or any new activities. April is wonderful. She is finding 'hidden' problems with my breathing and use, or at times misuse of my neck muscles and breathing that would be very hard for a lesser teacher to detect and work to correct.
Her ear for pitch/tone and the various 'artifact' background variances in my blowing/breathing structure and ways toward a remedy is amazing.
Any teacher can show a student posture and finger placement, but her teaching techniques go far beyond that.
I am more than pleased with her commitment to excellence.

The flute is one of the most beautiful instruments in an ensemble and often one of the most misunderstood. In lessons we would develop technique, tone, vibrato, range and musicality. The flute requires completely different technique than other wind instruments. It is important that an instructor understands this.

I am a certified teacher in Kansas. I have passed all background checks to be a public school teacher. I have 2 Bachelor Degrees, tuba performance and music education, from Wichita State University. I also have a Masters Degree from Sam Houston State University in Band Conducting.

I have been a public school band teacher for 5 years. I teach grades 5-12, as well as college level students, and college music education classes. My students have received top awards and positions in league, district, and state ensembles and performances.

I have experience in teaching band, orchestra, and choir. I take pride in having a well rounded education and a deep understanding of music education. I strive to be the best teacher for every one of my students.

I was homeschooled all of my life up to freshman year of high school. I knew how to play the drum set by teaching myself so I played along with songs and just did what felt right. I joined band freshman year under the direction of Jayme. I had never ever read any kind of music or rhythms or anything. By senior i had qualified for two 1's at state solos, a 1 for a state percussion trio, District Symphonic band, and colleges offering me scholarships.

Jayme was my band teacher for four years. I started out not able to play, or correctly sight read audition music for district band. One year later of her teaching and I made it into the SCKMEA District Band. Two years later I made it into the Kansas State 1234A Band two years in a row. I could never have accomplished making it into these bands and more without the help of Jayme. She is a great, caring person who really puts her all into music and you personally. I highly recommend working with her in her studio!
