*** Lesson Details *** I am a laid-back teacher, fun, and I focus on the needs, abilities, and ambitions of the student. In turn, students must realize that learning an instrument takes a lot of work and dedication. Students will be taught an in-depth comprehensive curriculum covering topics such as hand technique, using many rudiments and many sticking exercises to develop their technique. We will focus on reading skills and rhythmic interpretation (listening), counting out rhythms so that the student can also educate themselves when listening to music or otherwise, and can go beyond specific lessons assignments to educate themselves further, outside of our class. We will also cover Drum Set coordination and many styles of music associated with it. For Mallet instruments, it is likely we will cover music theory along with of course musical scales, arpeggios, etc.
Carl grew up in Connecticut in a musical family. He found a great deal of enjoyment starting Drum Lessons in grade school where he noticed that this joy for music and rhythm contributed to a passion-inspired growth accelerating beyond his performance in other subjects. He was inspired by Classic and Progressive Rock artists throughout Junior High and High School, and began to take his growing passion more seriously, taking part in Marching, Symphonic bands, Wind and Jazz Ensembles. Carl made the All-State Orchestra in High School, and performed at an All-New England Orchestra while attending CCSU (Central Connecticut State University) and while studying Classical Percussion (Snare Drum, Marimba, Timpani) under the tutelage of Principal Percussionist at the Navy Coast Guard. After two years at CCSU, he transferred to Berklee College
of Music where he obtained his BA in Music Performance. While attending Berklee Carl explored Contemporary Drum Set styles within various ensembles and classes, focusing on Jazz, Latin, Funk, Fusion, and World Music, under the apprenticeship of artists such as Kenwood Dennard, Ian Froman, Jon Hazilla, Nancy Zeltsman, Casey Scheuerell. Carl currently teaches at Needham Public Schools as well as the Winchester Community Music School, and performs in and around Boston and New England in various stylistic musical groups ranging from small Combo Jazz, Big Band, Folk, Funk, Indie Rock, Theatre, etc. Some latest projects include ‘Echo and Drake’ who were featured in ‘Paste’ and ‘American Songwriter’ Magazines, ‘Zen Carnival’, Mamadou(.com) to name a few.
Carl’s role as a teacher is to create as much of a positive blend of education with an exciting musical environment, incorporating the latest contemporary music (student and teacher influenced) while also applying a broad scope of traditional styles, techniques, and exercises for developing a well-rounded musical experience and musician, and with the goal of assisting the student in reaching their highest potential and to become as self-reliant as possible.

My son enjoys his music lessons with Jonathan, who is infinitely patient teaching what can be a challenging instrument. My son responds well to Jonathan's instruction, and he appreciates having access to a professional performer as a teacher. Jonathan encourages my son to learn a variety of music, including both challenging classical pieces and more recognizable popular and jazz pieces, which helps to sustain his interest in the lessons.

This instructor is very helpful when learning new concepts and adjusts his lessons to match your skill level.
Outside of teaching percussion and musical performances I have worked in special education for over 15 years.
My life of music started knee high at the age of 4 playing drums and piano. At the age of 15 I gave my first musical performance, from that stage on I knew my talent had found a home.
In the 11th grade I toured with a local funk group in Washington DC through 26 cities learning music and the life of travel at an early age. During my last high school and college years I performed extensively playing classical, jazz, rock, funk, go-go, gospel, marching band, R&B, and with local rap artist.
Recording credits and highlights include work with Def Jam artist Steady Eddy, recording go-go Mario with Double Agent Rock, and recordings with Little Benny and the Masters.
My other musical passion is teaching. Throughout my col
lege years and beyond I served as a percussion instructor and assistant band director at Morgan State University. As part of the Morgan State University Magnificent Marching Machine I served as a instructional leader in music and performance mentor for the team. I taught part time as a percussion instructor at Milford Mill High School giving individual lessons for over 10 years.
Musical inspiration is an important element to the refinement of my craft. A few personal musical influences are Buddy Rich, Max Roach, Neil Peart (Rush), Dennis Chambers, (Santana), George Gray (Roberta Flack), Ricky Wellman (Miles Davis), Quinton Mack-Davis (Rare Essence) and Michael Bland (Prince).

Our son has never played in a marching band before but is interested in playing in the marching band when he attends college in July so we were specifically looking for an instructor who had marching band experience to teach our son since he's never participated in the marching band in high school. We saw Mr. Stewart's profile and decided to have him work with our son. That was the BEST decision that we could have ever made. We have been nothing but impressed with Mr. Stewart. He definitely has the gift of teaching and he is very patient, knowledgeable, and he challenges our son to get better by giving him homework after each session. Our son absolutely LOVES Mr. Stewart and he is always excited for each lesson and to practice what Mr. Stewart has taught him. Our son went from not playing in the marching band at all in high school to making his college band and receiving a scholarship all thanks to Mr. Stewart. We are very grateful for his outstanding teaching and we would definitely recommend Mr. Stewart 100%.
*** Lesson Details *** I break teaching down to an easy-to-understand language by demonstrating techniques, rudiments, drum set styles, and playing along with music within the drum lesson. I've been drumming for over 17 years, and I have been teaching for 9 years. Whether chosen as a hobby or a possible career route, having an experienced drum teacher is key.

"Murray is patient, encouraging, and obviously very knowledgeable about his subject area. He is also flexible and creative in unpredictable technology rela
ted situations. Looking forward to more lessons. I believe I can learn a lot."
"When you are looking for a good music instructor, these are the things you have to consider. 1. Price, 2. Location, 3. Teacher's experiences (resume), a
nd 4. Characters of the instructor. The first three are easy to recognize from online information. The last one is hard to get, and yet , for us, the most important factor. Many instructors teach lessons only as a job (for money). They do things only during their "paid time." However, taking music lessons need more than that. A true music educator takes every opportunity to see the potentials of the student, knows how to coach individuals, and build up each student with encouragement and sometimes, discipline. He not only teach weekly lesson to help improved my son's skills, he also do extra to encourage students to go to concert, summer camp and perform at the nursing home. Every year, he arranged every details of a free concert with flyer, communications, equipment and even a professional cameraman! He did all those to encourage students to get out there to perform. We are forever grateful for his help for our son's college and scholarship applications. Mr. Rank is a "student oriented" teacher with a servant heart. If anybody is looking for an "all inclusive teacher, Mr. Rank is the best percussion teacher in DFW area. I can never thank enough for what he has done for my son. I hope my son will one day grow and become a teacher like Mr. Rank who care so much for his students."
"Kevin is a fantastic instructor!
I have been taking private lessons from Kevin for two years now as we'll as receiving instruction in Band for the last t
hree years. Kevin not only is an incredible percussionist himself, but he has a knack for being able to convey ideas to students that they can understand. New and better approaches to teaching rhythm, personalized lesson planning to suit a student's needs, and a vast knowledge of music from years of professional experience are just a few things that Kevin brings to the table. If you're looking for a percussion instructor, I would highly recommend Kevin as your first choice!"
"Ben was very accommodating to my son's busy marching band schedule. My son had never taken lessons before, and he was nervous as to what to expect. By t
he second lesson, that was all just a thing in the past! Ben worked with my teenager to relax and really enjoy what he was playing. Even the teachers at school have noticed the improvement in my son's abilities after only a few lessons with Ben! If you need a lesson teacher, BOOK BEN!"
"Great first visit with Johnny!"
"Kevin Rank is an outstanding teacher.! My son is just beginning his 5th year of lessons with Kevin Rank. In the last 5 years, my son has grown from a shy
, unsure, extremely quite young man into a confident, 3 time all region percussion player. My boy has grown not only in his musical ability, but in his overall development. I am a strong believer that music is quintessential for all individuals. I am happy to have Kevin Rank helping my son to achieve his full potential as a percussionist and as a leader. He has made impressive advancements in his marimba playing, and Mr. Rank is instrumental in helping him achieve these goals."
"Absolutely fantastic teacher! I've had some lessons with Tareq. He is a great person and musician, he listens carefully and explains everything thoroughly
. He gave me great exercises that helped me improve my playing and sense of time and rhythm. It is a great experience to have lessons with him, and I think his attitude is what makes the difference. I highly recommend taking lessons with Tareq"
"Bill is top notch. I worked with Bill on Long Island in a club date band several years back. During that time he taught my nephew the drums. Bill's patien
ce and knowledge paved the way for my nephew to get accepted into a top music school. A great player and a great teacher!"
"My 11 year old son lost his drum teacher, and we found TakeLessons online. The hardest part is choosing a teacher because many are all top notch 5-Star ra
ted. I picked Tracy D. seemingly at random!
What a lucky draw it turned out to be. Tracy is a real pro, with a great personality. It took my son less than a few minutes before he was comfortable, having fun, and learning new things (he has 1 year experience).
I’ve been a part time musician for over 40 years, and I can tell you when I meet someone that is a true professional musician and the right person to teach my son. That is this exceptional woman."
