Crystal brings a lifetime’s experience of professional musicianship to each of her lessons. Born into a family of musicians, she sang her first solo at age 2. She also benefits her students with an extraordinarily diverse musical background, having worked as a vocalist in gospel, country, musical theater, jazz, classical, rock, pop and soul styles. Her performing career has taken her from L.A. church meetings to London’s Houses of Parliament.

Crystal hails originally from Los Angeles, CA - where her musical parents gave her a head start by including her in the family business the moment she was able to contribute. She went on to study classical voice, piano and music theory at The Boston Conservatory of Music. After concluding her studies in London, she returned home and began working regularly as a theater performer, appearing in twen
ty world premiers and re-imagined classics. Most notably she played the lead role of Keely Smith in the big band jazz musical “Louis and Keely: Live At The Sahara” during its eight-month run at Westwood’s Geffen Playhouse. She also formed her own rock band, The Honeysuckle Jones Revival, with whom she performed her own songs all over Los Angeles. And she began working as a studio session vocalist, providing demo vocals for other songwriters, as well as arranging and performing back-up vocals for original artists, including Laura Roppe (currently in the Top Ten on Billboard’s Uncharted list of emerging artists.) Crystal played the lead role of Brooke in the new operatic rock musical “The Burning Opera LA” during its Los Angeles run in 2011 as well as providing ensemble vocals and playing piano and bass. She also performs holiday tunes from the Golden Age of American songwriting with musical quartet The Sleigh Belles.

Crystal believes that music is serious business but that it should be fun. She encourages her students to play music they love, as well as expanding their musical knowledge. She is a firm believer in basics first and emphasizes theory and technique as the tools to support creativity and provide freedom, power and control. She believes effort beats talent every time and the student who practices consistently will see results, whatever their level of ability. Most of all, she believes we were all born to make music.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lesson structure varies depending on the student's instrument, age, level of experience and musical style. However, all lessons focus on:

Technique
Music theory
Performance style

After 3 or 6 months of consistent lesson attendance and practice, students will have a clear understanding of how their instrument works and how to care for it. They will be able to read basic music notation. They will be working toward clearly defined musical goals and they will have at least three performance pieces learned.

Amazing singng instructor

Crystal has increased my daughter’s self-esteem and expressiveness through song. My daughter is now writing her own poetry and song lyrics, as well as being able to combat her once shyness quality. She loves to perform in front of others now and has a confidence level that amazes me, especially now that she is going into those “teen” years. I have experience working with people individually and in groups, as an undergrad Psychology intern, a cognitive skills trainer, a counseling student, an adjunct instructor and an academic coach. As an undergrad intern, I worked with elementary school children as a tutor and a mentor. As a counseling student, I have worked with various populations, from grade school students (grades 4-8; making healthier choices) to adults (stress, anxiety, career decisions, bereavement, etc.) to older adults in hospice care. I have facilitated psycho-educational groups with individuals suffering from a mental illness as well. Lastly, I worked with college students at a local university as an academic coach. STUDY SKILLS/ACADEMIC COACHING: Using my passion for education and my insight gained in my couple of years (so far) immersed in the world of education, I help students (grade school and college) develop areas of their academic life needing improvement. As suggested above, I help students develop time management, coping strategies for anxiety, study skills, information processing and motivation. Though it is a valuable tool, it is presently not a service that is offered at most colleges in the area.

WRITING: As a lover of reading and writing, I understand the value of expressing thoughts, feelings and ideas. As a writer, my focus is on creative writing (mostly short stories presently) and essays. Given my undergraduate and postgraduate experiences, I have written many academic papers, mostly in APA style. I edit and revise papers as well as help individuals develop their writing voice, develop their ideas, develop an approach to structuring writing, maintain consistency with writing and provide genuine feedback. Beyond that, my help with writing is limited to the goals of the the individual.

TWO IMPORTANT THINGS: I strive to maintain a positive collaboration with those I work with. I believe this is one of the most important parts of the process. Also, I promote the idea of Soul. To me, Soul is any sincere display of passion. With Soul, we perform in a most genuine and graceful way. I personally believe that whether one is playing the piano, writing a story, living life, singing, giving a speech or anything (necessarily peaceful), one should do it with Soul.

I have to give Andrew 5 stars for the first lesson. He really cares about meeting goals specific to the person he is teaching. He started out with some basic exorcises that I can do at home and then we talked about how the lessons can be structured in the future for what I think I need to improve. Tutor came and seemed interested in helping, actually did research which indicated so. Then I had to cancel a lesson due to child having strep but advise will resume following week. Then received a call from Take Lesson stating she says 'not a good fit.' which is perfectly fine but she could have indicated that in an adult manner verses me getting a call Tuesday a day prior to lesson.
Disappointed but found more reliable and dedicated concerned turtor.

I've taught both privately and in the classroom (in schools from Pre-K to college, and through workshops), and have been a working musician and teacher for more than 25 years. I have a degree in music from Columbia College Chicago (Summa Cum Laude). My students have included everyone from absolute beginners to working professionals like myself. Many of my students have gone on to careers in music as performers, songwriters and/or teachers.

My approach in private instruction involves tailoring the lessons to the specific needs of each student, while making sure that he/she has the knowledge and technique to succeed in their creative endeavors. Whether it's a hobby or a potential career, I leave nothing out. You will learn the entire instrument. In cases where a student works in more than one subject, one session can typically be applied
to all/both of them. I strive to help every student find their own creative voice, while building the skill sets required to work in any style of music.

Phil is a fantastic guitar teacher. My teenage daughter has had a few teachers over the years, but he’s the first to help her learn to read actual music, teach her to restring her guitar, and provide a true musician’s perspective that keeps her interested and excited to learn. His focus on classical as a springboard for all other music genres is refreshing. We are thrilled to have found this gem of an instructor, his love for music and guitar is infectious and inspiring.

I started voice lessons which turned into combined voice and guitar lessons with Phil almost two months ago, and I've had an awesome experience! I came in nervous with crippling stage fright, but Phil has taught me to own it and realize that it's normal. He's a super cool dude with great stories and crazy amounts of music knowledge and experience. He is helping me find my true personal voice, which no vocal coach has ever helped me with. Teaching is what I do! I have TAed multiple classes and taught dozens of students. I teach piano and other music concepts, as well as STEM fields in school. I only teach concepts that I'm completely fluent in, however, so you always get the absolute best instruction possible!

I have been playing piano for over 12 years. I retrained from scratch in the Taubman Technique a few years ago and play with ease and effortless musicality! I have taught tons of students how to play the instrument, incorporating these concepts into their playing as well.

I also tutor in STEM topics, including all math, physics, chemistry, and others. I have tutored over 2 dozen students and helped many achieve great results. I have a Master's degree in applied physics, graduated Magna cum Laude, and am fully prepared to help you master your math/science class

About Jeff
I'm a graduate of Dean College in Franklin, MA and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston where I majored in art history and studio art with a focus on portrait painting and illustration. I continued further study at the Andeeva Portrait Academy in Sante Fe New Mexico, the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art in Van Nuys, CA and the Sadie Valerie Atelier in San Francisco.

The program of study for drawing will include: Demonstration of one, two and three point perspective, creating the nine step value scale, cast drawing in charcoal, the still life in charcoal and drawing the portrait. The topic of composition will also be covered. I’ve done commissioned work for Audi, the Norman Rockwell Museum, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the American Repertory Theater, the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, Kessler Financial Ser
