I have over 14 years of experience in teaching flute and piano to students of all ages and levels. My goal as a flute teacher is to give each student a very well rounded and thorough understanding of the instrument. Lessons will be tailored to each student and will include the following: knowledge of instrument care/maintenance, tone production, technique (scales, etudes, etc), musicality, music theory, and a variety of repertoire from classical to pop.

About Sheila
My interest in music began at the age of seven when I began private instruction in classical piano, and by the age of ten, I began playing the flute. I received my Bachelor of Music with a degree in Music Education from the University of Redlands, where I studied flute with Sara Andon. There, I performed in the university's Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and Orchestra. During my third year at university, I studied abroad at the Zoltan Kodaly Pedagogical Institute of Music in Kecskemet, Hungary.

In 2013, I graduated from California State University, Northridge with a Masters degree in Flute Performance where I studied flute with Sandra Kipp. At CSUN, I performed in the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Northridge Flute Quartet, and various chamber ensembles. I currently reside in Irvine where I teach private flute and
piano lessons and perform with local ensembles.

My goal as a music educator is to foster excellence in the art of music through private instruction. I have worked with students of all ages ranging from 5 to older adults.

In my studio, students will have a well rounded music education. This means that we will work on a variety of things such as sight reading, music theory, music history, and a wide range of repertoire (from Beethoven to the Beatles!) While I have high expectations for my students, I do my best to keep the lessons relaxed and lighthearted. My hope is that the student is always engaged and interested during lessons.

My three expectations:

1. Come prepared both mentally and physically (this is especially important for flutists-- make sure to warm up prior to the lesson!)

2. Don't be afraid to ask questions and make mistakes. This is non-threatening territory, I'm here to guide you and help you. Remember that mistakes happen, we're human. Just be sure to learn from those mistakes so that you can take something away from each experience.

3. For parents-- BE INVOLVED! I can't tell you how often I've seen younger students excel when their parents were proactive in the experience. This means encouraging them to practice, coming up with a rewards system, and even sitting in on the lesson to take notes. This way, you can reinforce what we accomplished during the lesson at home together. It's difficult for music teachers to compete with iPads, Playstations and television, so let's get creative together!

*** Required Materials ***
Flute students must own a well maintained flute, as an instrument that is out of adjustment causes frustration and can initiate bad habits. In addition, the student must also have a metronome and tuner, a music stand, flute repertoire, and an assignment book for me to write down each week's assignments.

Piano students must have a working acoustic piano or digital piano in their home for piano lessons. The student must also have a metronome, piano repertoire, and an assignment book for each week's assignments.

In lessons, I will teach students how to develop an embouchure and make sound, have proper technique, discuss equipment care, how to read music and develop note recognition, and ultimately, play music. The goal is to get my students playing with proper technique, so that this will carry on throughout their career and playing of the instrument. After getting some sounds out of the instrument and having decent technique, students will be assigned 1-2 songs to work on each lesson. It is the learning of music on one's own, that I believe, truly challenges the student to continue to apply information given in lessons.

About Eric
Hi! I'm Eric, a Saxophonist, Composer, Singer, and Teacher that was born and raised in Southern California. I've been playing the saxophone for over ten years now, writing music for as long as I can remember, and singing since I was in elementary school. I play for a variety of groups in Los Angeles, and sometimes perform in L.A. and surrounding areas at venues such as the LightHouse, Saint Rocke, Avalon, The Mint, and the Baked Potato.

I keep my lessons fun, efficient, and applicable. I give students assignments to work on, not only so they don't forget what we talk about, but also so they can also expand upon the concepts given in lessons, (which familiarizes them more with the information). I look forward to helping you unlock your potential!

In addition, haven taken over 4 years of Music Theory and Ear Training at music conservatories, I can provide a great way for beginners to learn to read music as well as to hear it.
I will incorporate these aspects into your lessons:
-scales/technique
-articulation
-tone
-intonation
-vibrato
-rhythm
-musicality/being inspired
-how to practice/practice methods

Happy flute playing! :)

View Full Profile

My name is Azeem and I am very passionate about music, specifically flute. Flute performance was a surprise in my life that I discovered in high school. It moved me to a point where I knew it was what I wanted to pursue after listening to an orchestra’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony. Though any discipline within music takes great patience, discipline, and perseverance, that freedom and expression that you receive while performing make it well worth it. The classical technique on the flute can provide a great foundation to learning all styles of music on the instrument, from classical, jazz, hip-hop and even folk. Along side classical flute performance, I have learned to also beatbox on the flute and produce/compose my own music as well. I believe learning multiple styles of music in the long term is extremely beneficial to becoming a well rounded musician. It also improves musicality and develops your own unique style on the instrument.

I have recently started teaching ...

About Azeem
*See further below for lesson details!*
Azeem the Flutist: I am a Master's student in Flute Performance at the University of Northern Iowa. I have been playing the flute for 13 years and teaching for 7. My main style is classical, and due to the technical training I have had since I was very young, it has been very easy for me to learn and master other styles such as Folk, Jazz, Blues, Beatbox, Hip-Hop, and other styles of flute. I have a passion for performing and have played hundreds of solo and ensemble concerts. As a classical performer, I was the Grand Prize Winner of Santa Barbara Performing Arts Scholarship Competition in 2013 and won 3rd prize at the University of Northern Iowa Concerto Competition in 2016. I have played concerts all over the United States as well as in United Kingdom and Italy. As a performer of other styles I h
ave played in a couple bands (“Dannsair" Irish Folk Band and “Azeem X Underbelly”) and supported these acts on tours.

Azeem the Teacher: I really love spreading the knowledge I've learned over the years about the flute and production/composition (Logic Pro X and Sibelius). I find a huge sense of fulfillment in seeing my students enjoy learning and making beautiful music. I have a high level of knowledge and skills that I am willing to use to teach students from the most beginner to the most advanced on the flute.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lesson plans are based around your skill set. I expect my students to practice, but I make sure they're always having fun and enjoying playing. My goal is to get my students playing music as fast as possible so they can see results immediately and get excited!

Note: I am trained and specialized in teaching flute. Although I have basic skills in Production and Composition, my main speciality is Flute Performance. I always like begin lessons by addressing the foundation of a flutist’s musicianship, tone, and technique. The method I use is proven to give students of all ages the best possible start to music and maximize their potential. If you are looking to develop a great foundation of musicianship, style, and technique on the flute then you will enjoy lessons!

*** Specialties ***
-Beatbox Flute
-Improvisation
-Specialist in classical flute, though proficient in any flute style (blues, jazz, folk, etc.)
-Also experienced in teaching music performance and production/composition

It was fun time learning music, especially the flute. I wasn't familiar with the music at all like I was an illiterate in music. Many Thanks for Mr. Azeem for being patient with me and walk me through every basic knowledge in music deliberately. In the end, I am happy to have a new skill in my life which is playing flute. I wish, I have more time to practice more flute and playing professionally. Also, Mr. Azeem is a decent and a respected person in all kinds, teaching, interpersonal conversations, and understanding the difficulty of playing flute for the beginners.

Azeem is a very helpful teacher; he was able to diagnose problems and give many suggestions on ways to fix issues in my playing. He also is friendly and professional, which made for a relaxed, but productive lesson session. We met once a week very consistently, and I can say that my flute playing has greatly improved as a result of these lessons. I highly recommend Azeem, and really enjoyed having him as a teacher!

Azeem was my flute techniques teacher and my lesson teacher while I am pursuing a Instrumental Music Ed degree. I have never picked up a flute and I was impressed at how knowledgeable he is at the flute. Throughout our lessons, he was very quick to spot and correct errors, as well as making the flute very fun and interesting to learn. Throughout our lessons, I was picking up more and more techniques, and was able to pick up the basic fundamentals without creating bad habits. Overall, great teacher and an amazing performer!

I have been teaching lessons for 12 years, to beginners to conservatory level students. I am a performing musician with a BA in music education and music performance, as well as a MA in Flute performance. I have successfully prepared students for NYSSMA as well as for college music auditions. I teach the foundations like great tone, breath support, articulation, rhythm, note reading, theory, and my favorite, musicality! I cater each lesson to each individual student's needs and goals, and above all, instill a life-long love of music.

About Melanie
As a professional flutist, I've performed with orchestras, and do a lot of chamber music, including new music. I've performed with piano, guitar, harp for both Celtic and classical, cello, woodwind quintet, string quartet, choirs, jazz piano trio, and free improvisation with cello and bass. I graduated from SUNY Fredonia for music performance and music education, and got my Master's degree in flute performance from the Hartt School of music.

My philosophy of teaching: I teach music because it is unique and necessary. Students learn best in a relaxed, nurturing environment. I believe in order to successfully teach, I need to be encouraging, and truly care about the students. My goal is to always have the students improve. To do this, I think students need a well-balanced diet of tone (Moyse De la Senorite can be used), technique (
scales for younger students, Maquarre Daily Exercises or Taffanel and Gaubert Daily Excercises for more advanced students), etudes (Melodious and Progressive Studies), and pieces (I consult the NYSSMA manual for appropriate pieces for the students level). Having taken Alexander Technique, I strongly emphasize posture so that students can use their bodies in the most efficient way. Individualized instruction allows for teachers to cater to the needs of the student, challenging the students without frustrating them. Everyone is unique and learns at different rates, so no two lessons will ever be the same. I teach students how to practice, so that they can progress outside of the 30 min. or hour long lesson. As for performance standards, I have used rubrics for tone, technique, articulation, phrasing, and breathing. Once strengths and weaknesses are assed, I create a plan to help the student improve, which is what students and teachers want to hear.
