(Music In Education) Piano Lab certification. My professionalism and expertise are at your service. I will work together with you to insure an enjoyable and informative learning experience.

*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson in my studio would begin with a brief question/answer time with the student to learn how their week has gone, and how their music practice is progressing.

For PIANO LESSONS we begin with Technique including scales and dexterity exercises, then we play from the Lesson book and a Recital selection. I typically let the student play through the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to play the piece again. After that we go over the Theory assignments, and do Ear Training exercises. I am comfortable teaching from a variety of different methods courses. The methods course is chosen according to the student's interest. I never require a piano student to continue using books that are not inspiring. There so many methods courses available, that a student may always be able to have methods books they LOVE.

In my SINGING LESSONS we also begin with a recap of the student's week. Then we continue with Warm Up exercises to prepare the student's voice for the lesson. Then we study Sight Singing and Solfege Singing (do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do) to increase the student's listening skills. After that the student sings their selections. Like I do in Piano lessons, I listen to the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to sing the piece again. I am comfortable teaching many styles of vocal music including classical, Broadway, pop, rock, and Christian.

For MUSIC THEORY lessons, the study material is chosen according to the student's interest and age. Topics include notation, chord structure, chord progression, melodic structure, and harmony. I also incorporate Music Listening in the Music Theory lesson in order to learn from the masters in many styles of music. My Music Theory students will also have the opportunity to develop composition and songwriting skills if they desire.

My teaching style is structured and friendly, keeping the student's goals and interests at the forefront. I enjoy motivating students to reach their highest potential.
After 3 to 6 months in my studio my students will see improvement in their musical technique, ear training, music reading, notation, and knowledge. They will be preparing recital pieces for an upcoming performance. I provide two recital opportunities a year: in December, and in May. Most importantly, the student's love and appreciation of music will be growing.

PIANO lessons in Living Room: piano near front entryway, couch, loveseat, over-sized chair, dining room table, open space, end table with chair, parents may sit in on lesson.

SINGING lessons in Recording Studio: keyboard, recording equipment, desk, 2 chairs, music stand, microphone, private room. Parents may wait in adjacent rec room or sit in on lesson.

I have been sharing the joy of playing guitar with others since 1983. I attended Guitar Institute of Technology from September 1984 to September 1985 and still hold the title as the youngest female graduate at the school to this day. I later earned a Masters degree in teaching and learning to enhance my skills as a teacher in music and in other areas of education; but I learned some very valuable skills in my graduate program that give me an edge over teachers without an advanced degree. I have studied how people learn,
how learning styles vary and how to identify and accommodate various learning styles in order to get the most from each individual student and teach each student in the most effective manner according to their particular learning style.

While I may have formal training in teaching, my actual approach is very holistic. I like to get to know my students; I want to know about them- what kind of music they are interested in and how they learn best. Once I determine the type of learner that I am working with and what the student would like to achieve, I then use that to develop an individualized approach for that student. I believe that fundamentals are necessary and good, but I also believe that those fundamentals should be put to use in a manner that accommodates the student and their particular likes and musical goals as quickly as possible. What good are concepts without application? I want to see students playing with skill AND with joy because they are able to play what they love to listen to and even more....I like to see students create their own music with the skills that they acquire.

My first tutoring experience took place in first grade when I was asked to assist a newly arrived Vietnamese girl with her English. I myself had learned English when I first came to the United States at three years of age and could relate well to some of the issues the newcomer was facing.

A true global nomad, I have lived in Germany, the U.S., Mexico and Russia and have traveled extensively. Starting with English and German, and eventually Spanish, French and Russian, I have been instructing students since 1989 in various countries of a variety of ages in a multitude of informal and formal settings.

In 1990, I received my Bachelor of Arts in Russian Studies from George Mason University. In 1995, I completed my Masters Degree in Secondary Education/Teaching English as a Second Language. After one year of working in a public school
setting, I began teaching privately and on a freelance basis for a number of private companies and language schools, and the government.

I have been teaching foreign languages for over 15 years including almost five years of teaching Arabic at the university level. I have been a small group instructor and private tutor as well to help students of Arabic, French, Farsi, and Turkish. Although these languages are very different, learning each one has made me better at the others as I develop nuances for the vocabulary, grammar and other lexical features of the languages. I have also lived abroad for almost seven years affording me the opportunity to understand the cultures of the peoples and to gain proficiency akin to a native speaker.

I love learning new languages myself and sharing them with others. This has fueled my drive to learn new languages as well as teach. I have learned various languages through traditional classroom studying, private tutoring, and self instructi
on. The combination of these methods has helped me to learn the challenges that students face in learning foreign languages and the techniques that work to make you successful.

I am a native English speaker and have acquired near native proficiency in Arabic by living in the Arabic speaking world for almost 7 years and teaching the language for over 15 years. My study of Arabic and Middle Eastern History led me to pursue additional studies in French, Farsi, and Turkish so that I could conduct more in depth research in these languages and also to assist me as I traveled through the region. Each language helps to unlock some of the more difficult aspects of the other language and helps to explain the similarities and differences of the languages and provides me with a unique set of tools to explain the "how?" and "why?" questions that generates from students' natural curiosity.

To teach your own native language, in my case English, it is immensely helpful to learn another foreign language. As I struggled to learn to speak others' languages, it helped me greatly to better understand my own. I enjoy using this advantage to help English as a Second Language students understand the intricacies of the language wile quickly grasping the most fundamental aspects required to communicate effectively in English.

I came to New York to accomplish a long-standing ambition: To become a professional pianist and a complete musician working as a teacher and a performer. Now that I have accomplished my goals, I would like to share my knowledge with my students and make them feel the music as deeply as I feel it!

My teaching philosophy is to provide a comprehensive music instruction that is not only about notes and rhythm, but also about connecting performance with theory, technique, collaboration, self-reflection and creativity from an early age. I teach in group and individual settings in Spanish and English to ages 3 – adult and organize classical and contemporary repertory to teach and present in concerts. In my present position I use improvisation exercises to teach students music concepts such as rhythm and dynamics, and graphic and listening aids to teach about orchestral instruments. I share with parents their children’s progress and also offer advice that can help my students when they practice.

At first I was skeptical about taking lessons, I did not think that at almost 40 years old, that I could learn to play the piano. BUT!!!
