I have been playing the piano since I was five years old. My passion for music led me to steadily progress in my studies, and I naturally chose to major in music at Ohio State. To broaden my scope, I earned my degree in Composition while taking piano lessons concurrently from Professor Emeritus George Haddad and Professor Steven Glaser. Rather than focus on one area of piano music, I augmented my repertoire through extensive study of the Baroque through Modern periods. In addition, I accompanied orchestra and band instruments, a youth choir, and even performed the first movement of Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concerto with my high school’s chamber orchestra.

I am very perceptive of my students’ rate of improvement and level of engagement with the music they’re playing. If they are stuck on something, I take the time to break the music into manageable steps and to find appropriate supplemental material. I am thrilled when students are eager to learn and committed to practice; ...

In my music studio, I give lessons in piano, violin, guitar, and composition. In my tutoring center, I specialize in Latin (learning from scratch and tutoring). I instruct students of all ages at different skill levels.

My in-studio lessons are given on a grand piano.

Education

BM Music Composition -- Ohio State University, Autumn 2012
BA Classics (Greek and Latin) -- Ohio State University, Autumn 2012
Classics Fellowship -- Indiana University, 2013-2014
Piano Training: Collegiate lessons from Steven Glaser and private lessons from George Haddad

Accomplishments

As a high school senior, under the tutelage of OSU Profess
or Emeritus and world-renowned pianist George Haddad, I performed the first movement of Shostakovich's Second Piano Concerto with the chamber orchestra.

I performed different self-composed pieces at seven OSU Composers' Workshops and won the Audience Favorite Award at the Johnstone Woodwinds Composition Competition in 2012. My Senior Composition Recital was performed on October 25, 2012. It showcased several of my three-movement works: string quartet, clarinet solo, set of classical songs for piano and voice, set of pop songs for piano and voice. Interspersed with these were two solo piano pieces and a duet for piano and violin.

My background makes me a knowledgeable and effective tutor. I was valedictorian at Delaware Hayes High School in 2009 and received OSU's Maximus Scholarship based on my ACT and SAT scores.

I specialize in teaching beginner-intermediate piano to children. A solid base is SO important if one expects to grow and eventually play more advanced pieces. I believe that every child is unique, and I tailor my teaching approach based on the individual child before me. I have lots of experience with children and understand how to keep young people engaged and active in a lesson. I look forward to meeting you!

About Amy
Are you interested in learning piano, or do you have a child who is? I can't wait to help you turn this desire into reality! My name is Amy, and I am a piano teacher who specializes in teaching children. I descend from a long line of musicians (both my mother and grandmother were piano teachers) and have played piano for 21 years, studying with a private instructor for 13 of those. I received my BFA at Goddard College (’14) and my MFA at Boston University (’16).

Over the past six years I have taught piano to students of all ages and levels in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Boston, Massachusetts, and now Columbus! As a member of the Ohio Music Teacher’s Association, I can offer your child multiple performance opportunities throughout the year, as well as small group lessons in my studio. Learning an instrument is beneficial for many reasons. Asid
e from the obvious enjoyment one gets out of playing beautiful music, working at a skill week after week helps children build confidence and grow in all areas of life. I coach my students to take pride in their accomplishments, to exude an air of assurance and poise when sitting at the piano, and to become self-directed learners.

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:
One of the wonderful (and obvious) benefits of private instruction is that each student's unique abilities and shortcomings can be brought into clear focus and addressed. I am highly skilled at encouraging students through a careful balance of praise and constructive criticism. I make sure they are aware of (and take pride in) their strengths so that when challenging moments arise, they are motivated to do the work.

I maintain high expectations for my students, constantly reminding them that it's the quality (not the quantity) of their playing that counts. It is much more important to me that a student learns to play one piece well rather than ten pieces poorly. There is no race to the finish line. I believe in taking however much time is necessary to help a child understand a concept—we might spend the majority of a lesson on it if we have to. Learning must be done at the child's own speed. Children benefit enormously from having 100% of my attention during lessons; they will never need to try and "catch up" with other students.

METHOD:
Most method books for young students focus on teaching the child to read notes on a page, and as one can only learn to read music so fast, children are therefore stuck playing songs that keep the hands rooted on or around Middle C. There are so many problems with this method, least of all the fact that it's quite boring. A bigger issue is the lack of focus on technique and playing. Children are naturally musical--they love to sing and dance. Playing piano should be no different. Children can be taught songs using no music at all; rather, they can learn simple melodies by identifying patterns on the piano. This helps train their ear AND frees the child up to focus on technique rather than scrutinizing the notes on the page. My students get to use the entire keyboard almost right away (both black keys and white keys) rather than being crowded around Middle C.

Another issue with the Middle C position is that it creates an awkward twisting inward of the wrists, which breeds tension. The first thing students should learn is how to play with relaxed wrists, not tense ones!! This is one of the building blocks of good piano technique. Keeping kids rooted around Middle C for the first six months of their piano education does not set them up for good technique.

Now, all of this is not to say that I don't teach children to read music--I do. Absolutely! I introduce intervals and guide notes as soon as possible. I think the intervallic approach is super useful, especially when dealing with children who are coached from a young age to look for patterns. Alongside reading music, though, it is important to teach songs that are only for playing.

For beginning students, I like to use the Piano Safari method. These books offer a wonderful blend of rote pieces (for playing, not reading) and reading pieces that use the intervallic approach. These pieces are fun and engaging--some parents complain about how their children won't stop practicing them! Here is a sampling book of other books and materials I may use:

Beginning Students: Tales of a Musical Journey Books 1 + 2, Piano Safari Books 1 + 2, Carl Czerny's The Little Pianist, Bastien Piano Literature Book 1, Royal Conservatory Series Preparatory Books A & B and Book 1

Intermediate Students: Piano Safari Book 3, Bastien Piano Literature Books 2-4, Royal Conservatory Series Books 2-6

Advanced Students: Bastien Piano Literature Books 5-6, Early Advanced Classics to Moderns, Royal Conservatory Series Books 7-10

Amy is one of the best piano teachers you will ever find. She loves music and is able to pass that passion on to her students. She works with each one as a unique individual, no rote formula or one size fits all approach. We drive from Dayton to Columbus every week because it's worth it to have Amy as a teacher. My 6 years old daughter had a wonderful experience with Amy in Boston, MA. In general she has issues focusing on tasks, but Amy was always able to keep her attention and motivate her to do her best. Amy is very personable, professional and most of all patient, a very important skill to have when dealing with young students. She assigns homework and rewards students for it, helping them to practice with consistency and take pride of their accomplishments. I highly recommend Amy if you are in Columbus area and looking for a positive and enjoyable learning experience.

I teach children, teens, and adults using a variety of music and and methods. I teach keyboard harmony and music theory, as well as by _ear_. I'll happily answer your questions.

I am patient and accomodating to my students. I draw on a diverse body of repretoire and experience.

Exactly what I teach, and how quickly we progress varies from student-to-student.

I have a B.M. degree in Music Technology.

About Sean
Anyone can sound great on a piano! Let me show you how.

I am a gentle and patient teacher. My students like me.

When I started teaching, I assumed that many beginners -- especially children -- would prefer to learn music by-ear. Based on my own personal experience as a child learning piano, I found that to be the easiest, most-intuitive, and rewarding way to develop musically.

However, in my more recent experience as a _teacher_, I appreciate how every student is unique and will learn best in different ways, using different approaches and methods. Some of the children I have taught, for example, demonstrated a propensity and affinity for visual pattern recognition. Some children seem to be more engaged when they have something to read. It holds their attention. Also, after the lesson is over, my student would have something to r
eference throughout the week to remember what notes to play.

I have taught a variety of adults, teens, and children over the past two years. I have a B.M. degree in Music and Technology. Myself, I have played piano (and other keyboard instruments) for over 20 years.

One approach I can take with adult students is to help them achieve a musical sophistication and richness without complexity and great difficulty. Being able to create music that is enjoyable to listen to isn't as hard as some might assume. Please contact me to show you how.

I teach a variety of music -- "Classical" (formal European compositions), Rock/Pop, and Jazz-influenced music. I have made many transcriptions. I'd love to share these with you and teach you how to play some of that music! I'll teach you your favorite songs.

Sean has been working with my 10 yr old for almost a year. He comes to our house and was very flexible with timing so lessons fit nicely into our schedule. Our daughter was new to the piano and our goal for lessons was to just introduce her to music while having fun learning. She has enjoyed her lessons and is progressing. Sean is patient with her and makes his lessons engaging. He's made sure he's meeting our goals for her learning and told us he's open to changing her lessons as we would like. I have been teaching piano, guitar and drums for 8 years and specialize in beginner/ intermediate students. The curriculum and manner of the lesson is tailored completely around the student's learning style. Just like everyone learns in school differently, everyone learns music different as well. I am a piano player at heart but am also proficient in songwriting, guitar, drums and vocals. Music is a gift and I count it a privilege to be able to give that gift to others through teaching. Shoot me a message and I can get you set up!

About Chas
I am a pianist and have been playing the piano since I was eight. I got my Bachelor of Arts in Church Music at SouthEastern University with a minor in Audio Production. My lessons are tailored to fit the students needs. Students can expect to learn important foundational Music Theory. We also work on chord progressions and applying them to improvisation and writing.

I have played the guitar for nine years and completely self taught. I teach electric guitar as well as acoustic guitar. Students can expect to learn about scales, chord structures and learning how to write with the guitar.

I have been playing drums for eight years and am completely self taught. I teach trap set drums solely on what musical genre the student is interested in and then we go from there. With drums students can expect to learn the importance of fills,
pocket drumming, different grooves and time signatures.

I got married in Jacksonville Florida and moved straight to Nashville in July with my beautiful wife, whom I play in a band with called WILLIX. I have been playing in different bands (jazz band, worship band, rock bands) for years and have experience leading and following musical groups. I look forward to teaching many students the gift that is music!
