Piano students will focus on the most important skills and concepts they need to be able to play proficiently and musically. This will be through the use of proper technique and providing a clear explanation of music theory, scales, progressions, harmonizing, improvising, ear training, sight reading and understanding lead sheets. All will be in the best interest of the student in order to focus them toward playing the songs and styles they wish to play. Everything will be demonstrated and explained thoroughly with clarity and patience. Exercises to help the students build confidence to play parts that they can call their own will be encouraged.

Drum lessons will improve the students technique and creativity while introducing the many diverse styles. Students will implement the use of the rudiments and see how they might be applied to beats or fills on the drum set. Linear patterns and four way coordination patterns will be applied for developing good coordination skills and ambidextrous discipline in advanced players. Beginners will learn to grasp a feel of straight quarter, eighth and sixteenth note beats. Shuffle and swing rhythms will be covered so the student can get a feel of grooves that are based on these concepts. Students may also learn about music and rhythms from all over the world, as they apply to all of the styles of modern music as we know it. After the basis of various rhythmic concepts are applied, then the student can reach into the field of playing over the bar line, playing in odd meters, and soloing.

Some people are afraid of music theory, they think it is a bad word. However, all my instrumental students learn music theory. There is nothing to fear. Music theory is foundational, as important as learning scales and chords. It is necessary to know to play at a high level. In classical music it is an interpretive tool, in jazz it is a tool for improvising. Like note reading, it opens up entire worlds for us to explore. It is FUN!

I teach theory, composition, and improvisation to students of all instruments, even instruments I do not play. I love working with violinists, vocalists, even dulcimer players. I am also available to tutor those who are prepping for high school and college.

My basic chord function theory course is twelve lessons / assignments. With that information students have the knowledge to progress to analytical and improvisational concepts. With some time and effort, everyone I've taught has learned it happily and easily.

I teach music. The guitar, bass guitar, and ukulele just happen to be the particular instruments I choose. Music as a language, discipline, and art, is the goal. I've been teaching, performing, studying, composing, for some thirty years. I've studied and gigged in the classical, jazz, rock, blues, R & B, and country idioms. *** Lesson Details ***
I am laid back, but at the same time very goal directed. I like to do technique and/or vocabulary, note reading, and songs every lesson. After six months students are able to to 'jam', (improvise over chord changes such as the blues). They are well on their way to becoming literate, probably a third way through the first book. They probably can play a half dozen songs well, and are starting to strum (comp) chord progressions in a musically rhythmic way. They may even have played in a couple concerts by then.

I bring my guitar and writing tools, extra picks, extra paper etc. Students provide their own instrument, method book, staff paper, notebook paper. Hopefully they have a music stand and their own guitar picks and other items relevant for the study of their instrument.

It is incredibly important for students to have a general understanding of music theory, regardless of their instrument. Music theory is the core of the music that we play and listen to, and it is a vital part of every student's music education. The purpose of music theory is to show students how music works, and for that reason, every music student should be exposed to it at some level.

Having started piano at the age of 7, I was taught music theory at a very beginning of my music education. I studied it throughout my childhood and into my collegiate years. I can teach this subject in detail and help the student develop a clear understanding of the music that they read and play.

About Sheila
My interest in music began at the age of seven when I began private instruction in classical piano, and by the age of ten, I began playing the flute. I received my Bachelor of Music with a degree in Music Education from the University of Redlands, where I studied flute with Sara Andon. There, I performed in the university's Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and Orchestra. During my third year at university, I studied abroad at the Zoltan Kodaly Pedagogical Institute of Music in Kecskemet, Hungary.

In 2013, I graduated from California State University, Northridge with a Masters degree in Flute Performance where I studied flute with Sandra Kipp. At CSUN, I performed in the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Northridge Flute Quartet, and various chamber ensembles. I currently reside in Irvine where I teach private flute and
piano lessons and perform with local ensembles.

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal as a music educator is to foster excellence in the art of music through private instruction. I have worked with students of all ages ranging from 5 to older adults.

In my studio, students will have a well rounded music education. This means that we will work on a variety of things such as sight reading, music theory, music history, and a wide range of repertoire (from Beethoven to the Beatles!) While I have high expectations for my students, I do my best to keep the lessons relaxed and lighthearted. My hope is that the student is always engaged and interested during lessons.

My three expectations:

1. Come prepared both mentally and physically (this is especially important for flutists-- make sure to warm up prior to the lesson!)

2. Don't be afraid to ask questions and make mistakes. This is non-threatening territory, I'm here to guide you and help you. Remember that mistakes happen, we're human. Just be sure to learn from those mistakes so that you can take something away from each experience.

3. For parents-- BE INVOLVED! I can't tell you how often I've seen younger students excel when their parents were proactive in the experience. This means encouraging them to practice, coming up with a rewards system, and even sitting in on the lesson to take notes. This way, you can reinforce what we accomplished during the lesson at home together. It's difficult for music teachers to compete with iPads, Playstations and television, so let's get creative together!

*** Required Materials ***
Flute students must own a well maintained flute, as an instrument that is out of adjustment causes frustration and can initiate bad habits. In addition, the student must also have a metronome and tuner, a music stand, flute repertoire, and an assignment book for me to write down each week's assignments.

Piano students must have a working acoustic piano or digital piano in their home for piano lessons. The student must also have a metronome, piano repertoire, and an assignment book for each week's assignments.

My life long passions have been for guitar, music, and business. I received my very first guitar at the age of 12 years old and have been studying, playing, and improvising ever since with over 28 years of experience. I've been able to play all over the world and tour with many different musicians and the thing that made the core of every great performance was the human interaction and communication. I started playing the piano when I was about 8 years old living in Salt Lake City Utah. My family would be watching TV or doing something else and I would go upstairs and play the piano instead. I practiced until I got to the level to play Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata original composition. I still love to play that one. I also loved to play a piece my grandfather gave me called Cordoba, by Isaac Albeniz.

I have played bass and keyboards in an original band giving a good knowledge of musical body language. From there I went on to teaching private and group lessons at Pianos n' Pianos studios. I use a few different method books. When deciding which one to use during a lesson, I assess the age of the student and what they can absorb. I started supplementing their lessons by using a write-it-out method, where students can take a few lin
es from a song they like and combine it with other songs. That way they can “compose” and be more invested in the music we are playing.

If you play a wrong note, I tell my students to just keep going and to not lose concentration. Wrong notes happen sometimes. If you make a wrong note in a performance, you can’t stop, you just have to roll with it and keep going. I also encourage singing with the piano that helps learns pitches and notes!

When teaching young children, I make sure to give them variety and plan lessons only about 30 minutes long. For adult learner, it is very good to play piano to keep the mind active and sharp. So really any age, 6 and up, is a good age!
