I started playing recognizable melodies at 18-months old. I have over 40 years of performance experience, and 20 years of teaching experience. I love sharing classical and contemporary tools with those that desire to create and to perform.

About Joel
I started playing recognizable melodies on the piano at 18 months old. At that time I was told that I even had perfect pitch. By age 5, my mother started giving me classical, gospel, and improvisational lessons. I was one of her 50 students until my senior year in high school. Through elementary, junior high, and high school, I received a lot of performance experience from school marching/concert bands, choirs, church choirs, piano concerts, band/choral conducting, and composing.

I received my BBA in Finance from the University of Texas at Arlington; through college and to the present, I have received over 25 years of performing/directing experience from overseeing two mega-church music ministries. At these ministries, I served as the department head, responsible for lead piano, directing, arranging, worship leading, and departmen
tal oversight.

I have produced 10 personal instrumental projects, and I have produced and recorded over 40 projects for other local, regional, and international artists. I currently travel with national, jazz, recording saxophonist, Joseph Vincelli, and my personal band Zamar. We have performed with a number of acts from Kirk Franklin, Darren Rahn, Kirk Whalum, Boney James, Fred Hammond, and many more.

As an instructor, I have been blessed with an ability to be relatable, relevant, musical, creative, fun, and engaging. I understand the language of music as a performer, and instructor, but most importantly, I value the ability to help the student find their own path of learning the joy of making music vocally and instrumentally. With over 18 years of private teaching experience and 30 years of group experience, I have gained a wealth of knowledge on how to be instructive and personal with the young or older beginner, intermediate and even advanced players. Let's grow together musically.

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching style is very laid back, although goal-oriented. We have fun while seeing progress. For piano, I typically use the Alfred Series "Alfred Basics 1 - 6" or the Adult All-in-One for the Older Beginner. In the first 3 - 6 months, one will become familiar with basis technics and concepts behind creating music. These concepts will be the foundation behind learning how to read music, play by ear, and create your own songs in any style.

We would move a little faster for the older beginner and work through the Alfred's All in One in conjunction with introducing my 5 steps to performance for any popular style. These steps have been very valuable for those that are wanting to play piano, guitar, bass, or even sing.

For vocalist, I work through Estelle Liebling, Vocal Course, Alfred Piano (as an instrumental reference) and a number of practical performance techniques that I have gained over the years to sing in more of a pop, jazz, gospel setting. We will work on performance techniques and develop the ear to gain confidence to perform in various popular settings. I will also introduce creative ways to make up original music using basic theory and ear training.

Joel is not only an outstanding musician, he is also a great teacher! I had the pleasure of taking piano lessons from him and enjoyed every minute of it and learned a ton. His instruction was a wonderful supplement to what I learned at the University. His is very knowledgeable, competent technically and hilarious! In addition to everything he offers musically, he is one of the best people I've ever known. Thank you Joel, for sharing your gifts!

About me!

I am a Westminster Choir College '11 Alum  who graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts in Music, summa cum laude. I also have my master's degree in music therapy from Drexel University. I am also a Member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and a  Board Certified Music Therapist. During my time at school I performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kimmel Center, and did music therapy work with older adults, as well as disadvantaged children and parents.

I have been teaching for over four years and now have a studio of more than 70 happy students. Teaching music is my passion, and I love seeing students grow!

I often draw upon my experience from my master's degree in music therapy, which taught me that music can have a profound effect on the human brain and upon cognitive development.  My skills as a music therapist allow me to better understand a student's cognitive strengths and areas for improvement, and to develop individualized teaching strategies which utilize student strengths.

Music should never simply be a rote-learning process. We develop real artistry. My students learn how to interpret, transform, and create music. From the first lesson, we experiment with various musical "ingredients" and revisit these tools often as we move through a lesson series or repertoire. Students explore a variety of styles and learn to read, compose, and improvise. Students as young as five have created their own theme and variations on a favorite tune with these techniques.

About Lauren
Hello! My name is Lauren S., and I am excited to bring out the musician in you!

Whether you're searching for yourself or your child, I would love to invite you to my beautiful creative space and help you meet your musical goals.

I focus on developing true artistry with my students and giving them the fundamental tools to be able to play and write various styles of music including classical, musical theater, folk, contemporary, Christian, and more.

We play from the very first lesson and learn other concepts such as music theory, literacy, and technique in subsequent lessons.

My students are involved in school ensembles, church choirs, community choirs, community and children's theater, and district contests. I support and seek out these opportunities according to their interests.

Please send me a note! I can't wait to get
started.

I have been playing the piano since I was five years old. My passion for music led me to steadily progress in my studies, and I naturally chose to major in music at Ohio State. To broaden my scope, I earned my degree in Composition while taking piano lessons concurrently from Professor Emeritus George Haddad and Professor Steven Glaser. Rather than focus on one area of piano music, I augmented my repertoire through extensive study of the Baroque through Modern periods. In addition, I accompanied orchestra and band instruments, a youth choir, and even performed the first movement of Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concerto with my high school’s chamber orchestra.

I am very perceptive of my students’ rate of improvement and level of engagement with the music they’re playing. If they are stuck on something, I take the time to break the music into manageable steps and to find appropriate supplemental material. I am thrilled when students are eager to learn and committed to practice; ...

Classics Fellowship -- Indiana University, 2013-2014
Piano Training: Collegiate lessons from Steven Glaser and private lessons from George Haddad

Accomplishments

As a high school senior, under the tutelage of OSU Profess
or Emeritus and world-renowned pianist George Haddad, I performed the first movement of Shostakovich's Second Piano Concerto with the chamber orchestra.

I performed different self-composed pieces at seven OSU Composers' Workshops and won the Audience Favorite Award at the Johnstone Woodwinds Composition Competition in 2012. My Senior Composition Recital was performed on October 25, 2012. It showcased several of my three-movement works: string quartet, clarinet solo, set of classical songs for piano and voice, set of pop songs for piano and voice. Interspersed with these were two solo piano pieces and a duet for piano and violin.

My background makes me a knowledgeable and effective tutor. I was valedictorian at Delaware Hayes High School in 2009 and received OSU's Maximus Scholarship based on my ACT and SAT scores.

I specialize in teaching beginner-intermediate piano to children. A solid base is SO important if one expects to grow and eventually play more advanced pieces. I believe that every child is unique, and I tailor my teaching approach based on the individual child before me. I have lots of experience with children and understand how to keep young people engaged and active in a lesson. I look forward to meeting you!

About Amy
Are you interested in learning piano, or do you have a child who is? I can't wait to help you turn this desire into reality! My name is Amy, and I am a piano teacher who specializes in teaching children. I descend from a long line of musicians (both my mother and grandmother were piano teachers) and have played piano for 21 years, studying with a private instructor for 13 of those. I received my BFA at Goddard College (’14) and my MFA at Boston University (’16).

Over the past seven years I have taught piano to students of all ages and levels in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Boston, Massachusetts, and now Columbus! I am currently accepting students for the Winter 2018 Semester! As a member of the Ohio Music Teacher’s Association, I can offer your child multiple performance opportunities throughout the year, as well as small group lessons in my s
tudio. Learning an instrument is beneficial for many reasons. Aside from the obvious enjoyment one gets out of playing beautiful music, working at a skill week after week helps children build confidence and grow in all areas of life. I coach my students to take pride in their accomplishments, to exude an air of assurance and poise when sitting at the piano, and to become self-directed learners.

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:
One of the wonderful (and obvious) benefits of private instruction is that each student's unique abilities and shortcomings can be brought into clear focus and addressed. I am highly skilled at encouraging students through a careful balance of praise and constructive criticism. I make sure they are aware of (and take pride in) their strengths so that when challenging moments arise, they are motivated to do the work.

I maintain high expectations for my students, constantly reminding them that it's the quality (not the quantity) of their playing that counts. It is much more important to me that a student learns to play one piece well rather than ten pieces poorly. There is no race to the finish line. I believe in taking however much time is necessary to help a child understand a concept—we might spend the majority of a lesson on it if we have to. Learning must be done at the child's own speed. Children benefit enormously from having 100% of my attention during lessons; they will never need to try and "catch up" with other students.

METHOD:
Most method books for young students focus on teaching the child to read notes on a page, and as one can only learn to read music so fast, children are therefore stuck playing songs that keep the hands rooted on or around Middle C. There are so many problems with this method, least of all the fact that it's quite boring. A bigger issue is the lack of focus on technique and playing. Children are naturally musical--they love to sing and dance. Playing piano should be no different. Children can be taught songs using no music at all; rather, they can learn simple melodies by identifying patterns on the piano. This helps train their ear AND frees the child up to focus on technique rather than scrutinizing the notes on the page. My students get to use the entire keyboard almost right away (both black keys and white keys) rather than being crowded around Middle C.

Another issue with the Middle C position is that it creates an awkward twisting inward of the wrists, which breeds tension. The first thing students should learn is how to play with relaxed wrists, not tense ones!! This is one of the building blocks of good piano technique. Keeping kids rooted around Middle C for the first six months of their piano education does not set them up for good technique.

Now, all of this is not to say that I don't teach children to read music--I do. Absolutely! I introduce intervals and guide notes as soon as possible. I think the intervallic approach is super useful, especially when dealing with children who are coached from a young age to look for patterns. Alongside reading music, though, it is important to teach songs that are only for playing.

For beginning students, I like to use the Piano Safari method. These books offer a wonderful blend of rote pieces (for playing, not reading) and reading pieces that use the intervallic approach. These pieces are fun and engaging--some parents complain about how their children won't stop practicing them! Here is a sampling book of other books and materials I may use:

Beginning Students: Tales of a Musical Journey Books 1 + 2, Piano Safari Books 1 + 2, Carl Czerny's The Little Pianist, Bastien Piano Literature Book 1, Royal Conservatory Series Preparatory Books A & B and Book 1

Intermediate Students: Piano Safari Book 3, Bastien Piano Literature Books 2-4, Royal Conservatory Series Books 2-6

Advanced Students: Bastien Piano Literature Books 5-6, Early Advanced Classics to Moderns, Royal Conservatory Series Books 7-10

My teaching philosophy has always been to nurture creativity in each of my students. To engage the pianist in a fun and meaningful way. To educate and further students capacity as a piano performer and to guide each of my students in the same way that I was mentored with music. Join me on a musical journey that will result in an experience to last a lifetime.

About Camron
I'm so thrilled that you are interested in becoming one of my students! With over 10 years teaching experience, I am a nurturing, patient, dynamic and engaging piano teacher. I go out of my way to nurture my students creativity, to practice piano performance and get those nerves out, to challenge and strengthen piano technique, to build a foundation with music theory and to let the student explore music, freely, that fits their own styles of playing piano. My Bachelors Degree in Music, emphasizing in Piano Performance, from Seattle Pacific University has equipped me with the tools needed to flourish as a piano teacher.

Piano inspires most of my creativity. Keyboard and the interpretation on it, open wide ranges of experimentation that cue technicality, while appeasing the sound that comes from it. Combination of both result in musical
moments that history refuses to keep from us all.

Here are some notable skills that I have gained on my musical journey:

*Diverse background in classical music.
*Classical piano performance recital repertoire at a masters level
*Skill level in playing to improvise on the spot
*Work and able to teach piano lessons to young children and special needs students
*State level piano recital performer while being a member of the Music Teachers National Association
*Extended piano techniques
*Lesson plan development
*Performance assessments

Hello! My name is Olivia Richardson and I am currently a Master's student in Piano Teaching and Performance at CU Boulder.

Teaching piano is something that I love. I have taught for 7 years now in both Nashville, TN (Music City) and Little Rock, AR. My students have ranged from ages 5 to 15. Classical piano is my specialty, but I also enjoy teaching jazz, pop, and ensemble piano. I am currently employed at the Parlando School for the Arts in Boulder and teach there on a weekly basis.

As a music student and teacher, I value the qualities of hard work and excellence while also encouraging my students to never forget that music is fun and inspirational! For me, educating others in music is a way I hope to contribute positively to my local community. Being given the opportunity to share music and inspire those around me through it is a tremendous gift and privilege that I do not take for granted.

About Olivia
Hello!

I am a Master's student at CU Boulder studying Piano Teaching and Performance. For the past four years, I have lived in Nashville, TN (Music City) - obtaining my Bachelor's Degree in Piano Performance from Belmont University, teaching, and gigging in the city.

I specialize in classical piano, but also teach pop, jazz, and ensemble repertoire. Classical piano lessons (especially for beginners) provide a great foundation for students, even if they decide later on to pursue another musical genre. As a pianist in Nashville, I've been privileged to work with musicians from all genres. In 2012, I was featured in the holiday special, Christmas at Belmont which aired on PBS. I also had the privilege of working with three time Grammy award-winner, Michael W. Smith in 2013. In 2015 and 2016, I was fortunate to play with the Nashville Sym
phony and the Tennessee All-State Orchestra, working with world-renowned conductor, Giancarlo Guerrero.

My teaching philosophy is that music should be inspiring! I truly believe and have seen first-hand that music lessons have the power to change lives at any age. For me, teaching piano is a way to positively contribute to my local community. I am currently teaching at the Parlando School for the Arts in Boulder and hope to expand my teaching studio into the broader community.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or reference requests. I look forward to meeting you!

I can't recommend Olivia highly enough! She did an excellent job with my ants-in-his-pants 7-year-old son. She is extremely patient and knows the trick to motivate each student individually. She figured out what "made my son tick", and taught him from that perspective. One thing I especially appreciated was Olivia's ensemble piano efforts with my son and the rest of the students in her studio. They played such a sweet 8-hand piano piece for a recital. It brought down the house! It is a rare teacher that would be willing to take the time to coordinate 4 students and coach them through a song so that they'd be able to perform on a recital.

My experience with Olivia was been outstanding! While I was completing my undergraduate degree, I hired Olivia to perform a few difficult piano movements I had written. Before that point, I did not have much experience writing for piano, but she had incredible insight into making the music more idiomatic for the piano. Additionally, I received piano lessons from her to supplement my college instruction. She was very very patient and her love for the piano was clear through her instruction. I could not recommend her high enough.
