About Carl

As far back as I can remember I have always enjoyed performing music. I can remember during my elementary school years how I would play drums during church service. Some days I would sneak in my dad's closet to play his saxophone. I began learning how to play saxophone in middle school and by the ti

Through the foundation I've gained by the influences of Mel Bay, Hal Leonard, and Suzuki musical instruction methods, I compile my own teaching materials. Using personally constructed guitar lessons, I demonstrate, instruct, and guide the student based on my assessment of their individual needs, skill level, and progress. Lessons are formulated in Modules, and advancement through them is based on the student's personal aptitude, skill level, and practice commitment. Learning is accomplished by ear as well as through essential methods of musical notation (tablature, 5-line staff, rhythmic comprehension). Students are trained to perform written music as well as to write and express the music within themselves.
I'm an encouraging and motivating guitar teacher with a casual relaxed approach. Teaching new guitarists is very rewarding to me. To see the light come on and watch a student perform a song, express themselves musically, and create their own composition is an awesome experience.

About Scott

The key to learning guitar......is finding the right instructor! I am an encouraging, effective guitar instructor and an experienced performing musician, offering in-person beginner through intermediate guitar instruction in my home and on line. It is very rewarding to me to help others along

Leni is an incredible instructor. He is extremely knowledgeable and yet never comes across as condescending or arragant.
He is helpful and encouraging and makes learning to play fun.
The music that he selects is challenging without being overwhelming and he is fine with moving on to something else if you just plain don't like a piece.
He is a very popular instructor and I feel fortunate that I have found a space in his schedule !

I really enjoyed my first lesson with Leni. He's very thorough and passionate about playing the piano. It's been years since I played, and he was very patient with me and explained things in detail.
Court
I can honestly say that Leni is one of the most professional and intelligent music instructors I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I have a background in music (low brass) from the 6th grade all the way through college. While I no longer play any brass instruments, I am currently taking drum lessons, and felt that now would also be the best time to try my hand (no pun intended) at piano. I am very happy with the lessons that Leni gave, however, I eventually came to the realization that the piano would be too much of a time constraint for me. I was not 100% committed to the piano due to working an 8-5 job every day, as well as taking the drum lessons I was already taking prior to starting piano. Also, it didn't help that I did not have a piano to practice with. With that being said, if I ever find myself with the time/capability to commit myself to the piano the way I wanted to, then I will be contacting Leni for more lessons. There are many piano teachers out there, but if you want to learn the CORRECT way so that you will not hurt your hands/fingers, then Leni is the absolute best choice. Thanks for everything Leni!

everything from basic "square one" (learning note names) to advanced jazz theory (harmonic/rhythmic), transposition, and music transcription (learning by ear and writing it down)… you can also learn to use theory to help you write your own songs. I teach theory to college-level music majors AND I can break music theory down really easily and simply for casual learners.

We are return customers to Kelly. My son loved her as a piano teacher but we stopped when he was taking trumpet during school. Now that he’s over trumpet, we excitedly reenrolled with Kelly. Dr. C has the unique ability to make his lessons fun and profound. As someone who didn’t have a formal classical music background, he has consistently encouraged me and has intensified my creativity and curiosity by exposing me to music and ideas that are now indispensable to me. He is passionate, funny, witty, and undoubtedly the most valuable instructor I’ve ever had.
Dr. Daniel Plante
Dr. C. is a longtime trusted colleague with a sterling resume and excellent reputation among his students at both Queens College and Mannes College. Having taught a good number of his former students, I can attest to both the preparation they received from him but their respect and admiration they hold. Much Recommended.

Dr. Eric C. is one of the most influential people in my life, and I have the honor of being coached by him. His attention to detail, intuition as a coach, and professor is truly one that is unmatched. He has the ability to show you something in a different light, which opens
up doors for you that you didn't know existed before. With his guidance, compassion, complete joy of this art form, and incredible knowledge, I was able to perform very difficult pieces. He always works diligently,
to ensure that no stone is left unturned, and every detail of the music is conveyed in how it is intended.

Any questions I have are always met with the utmost clarity. I appreciate greatly that he takes the time to ensure I understand the “why" of what I'm learning. He has a remarkable way knowing how to break
things down in a way that I always remember and am able to process, which has helped me immensely. My knowledge and understanding is always
expanding because of him. During my undergrad at the Aaron Copland School of Music, he was my theory and ear training professor. He goes above and beyond for all of his students and will always make sure that
they understand every detail in what they are learning. Any fears I ever had in learning the "challenging" concepts of music have been taken away
because of him, and now I welcome the challenges that come my way.

He has taught me how to truly listen to music, and dive into the depths of it, which in turn has given me an appreciation of this art form that can only be explained as transcendent. No matter how much knowledge I
acquire on my path as a musician, I will forever be in total awe of this art form. My gratitude for him is immense. "Before anything, you are a
musician first."-Dr. C.

He is very knowledgeable of the subject, and has a clear, friendly, and logical teaching approach that makes the experience fun. He can explain topics and concepts in a way that is easy to understand.
He is also very knowledgeable in music composition, arranging, and in the use of Logic Pro software that he could use while teaching theory."

"As Jim states on his bio, he teaches from age 8 and up. I'm one of his "up" students who's been playing guitar for a few years, but never took time to learn theory because I thought it was too confusing or difficult to learn. After being stuck in a rut for the past 30 years, I finally realized that I could be a guitar player, instead of just playing guitar, by understanding WHY I'm playing what I playing. I planned to take a few lessons to see how it would go. That was 4 months ago. Now when I pick up my guitar, I have a plan and am excited to learn more each week. Jim's approach to teaching theory makes it clear for anyone of any age or expertise. If you're young and want to learn the right way, Jim will teach you the right way. For us older folks, I found out you CAN teach an old dog new tricks... I highly recommend Jimmy!"

I took up tutoring with Stephen and he really broke down the steps. Sometimes, I do not understand things the first time when they are explained to me; and reading music happens to be one of them. However, I am very lucky to have Stephen as my tutor who is very patient in explaining the lesson to me. If you want a tutor who is patient and willing to invest time in helping you understand music, I highly recommend that you take Stephen."

How to Change the Key of a Song With and Without a Computer

What Does it Mean to Change a Key? To change a song’s “key” means to shift the whole musical system to a higher or lower position. This process is called “transposition.” Performers often need transpose a song to better fit their voices. That way, a performer with a naturally lower singing voice (like myself) will be able to more comfortably sing a song that was originally written for someone with a naturally higher voice. Or vice versa.  For singers, transposition feels fairly …
