I have a Masters Degree in music from The University of Melbourne in Australia, as well as having the distinction of a Bachelors Degree in Music from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle.

I had been playing guitar for about 5 years and had only been self taught. I found myself completely stuck playing the same chords and not able to play riffs or solos at all. In my first lesson I was playing the blues with slides and hammer ons and pull offs. In a couple of lessons he had me soloing in different keys and playing riffs from guitar gods! He was able to teach me in a couple lessons what took me years trying to teach myself! He makes lessons so much fun because not only are you learning the music theory but he relates it to popular songs that you can practice along with. He also has so much knowledge in other aspects as well. He can teach you about music gear and amps or help you compose your own music. He caters to your style and taste in music and can teach you ANYTHING!
I love guitar period, but it's overtly frustrating when you have no idea where to start, or how to play at all. I went through multiple guitar instructors trying to learn how to play and each of them weren't very specific, or didn't hone in on any one thing at a time so you could really start to get it down and process it. Then we happened to find David, and he was really what we were looking for. I started picking up chords like no other, It helped, and is helping tremendously. He goes into depth about the song,letting you comprehend it a little more, and ultimately learning it quicker and better.

I have had 4 different Blues guitar Teacher in the last 6 months, getting nowhere as far as really playing some Blues until I ran across David. The other teachers just wanted me to learn the pentatonic scales, Major and Minor. That took a lot of boring weeks and I am sure I will need to know those scales but I just wanted someone to show / teach me Blues chords, related to Blues songs and the timing to the chord changes so I could start playing some kind of Blues. I have had 6 one hour lessons so far with David and I am playing the Blues. The first 4 hours Dave showed me a E, A, B7 blues chord progression with some step up and step down notes. The 2nd 2 hours Dave showed me a A, D9, A7,E9 Blues chords and Blues timing with slides.
I take one hour Lessons every Thursday and in 6 hours I am playing the Blues. I picked up the guitar about 6 months ago, started teaching myself and not really getting anywhere. I am not a fast learner, about average in learning something new. Now I set a home Learning my guitar and polishing the Blues songs that David has taught me, starting to get FUN.

David just has a way of explaining things so that they make sense and doesn't waste any time getting right down to the nuts and bolts of guitar. “I started receiving lessons from David a few years ago, to improve my guitar abilities. I always used to tell people, "I've been playing guitar since the Eighties, though you would never know it." At the time I started, I knew some Metal riffs, three-chord Punk Rock progressions, and simple 12-bar blues. Though I took two guitar classes and first-year Music Theory in college in the early Nineties, the only scale I could say I knew was "blues pentatonic," emphasis on the quotation marks.
My goal was to relearn Modes/Scales, and brush up on theory, so that I could write more complex material. David taught me that, and so much more. Over these few years, I've learned Progressive Rock, Fusion/Jazz, and even some Country styles, as well as a great deal more about Metal and, yes, even Punk from David. I can play leads and solos with much more proficiency, in timing with the rhythm, and more tonally correct, than I ever could before. He has also helped me read music better, construct more professional-sounding compositions, and has started me on my own path to produce my own recordings, from recommending and using recording software, to capturing dynamics with mic placement, to mixing the rough takes to get the most out of the sound.
For a musician of any level or caliber, having an instructor like David is a true asset--for he has the knowledge and skills to take an entry-level musician every step of the way to becoming a professional performer, recorder, mixer, engineer, and producer. The only limit to the lesson's potential is your own level of determination, which David quite expertly helps you to improve with every session. Even if your goal is to simply learn to play one song on one instrument--and David teaches MANY instruments--he will have you playing that song like the musician who wrote it before you realize it--as long as you stick with your practice between lessons. She wanted to share her gift of music with others and started teaching piano lessons when she was 17. Lydia was hired on as a teacher with a local professional music company and worked there for 4 years. During that time she continued her education and received the necessary training on how to effectively teach students of any age.
Currently Lydia is a full-time professional harpist and music teacher maintaining a studio of 40 students. Lydia has performed well over 800 times in Columbus and the surrounding areas and has recorded 3 CDs of her beautiful music. She is the principal harpist for the Cardinal Health Chamber Orchestra and also plays with the orchestra at Northwest Bible Church.

Music should never simply be a rote-learning process. We develop real artistry. My students learn how to interpret, transform, and create music. From the first lesson, we experiment with various musical "ingredients" and revisit these tools often as we move through a lesson series or repertoire. Students explore a variety of styles and learn to read, compose, and improvise. Students as young as five have created their own theme and variations on a favorite tune with these techniques.

I have been playing the piano since I was five years old. My passion for music led me to steadily progress in my studies, and I naturally chose to major in music at Ohio State. To broaden my scope, I earned my degree in Composition while taking piano lessons concurrently from Professor Emeritus George Haddad and Professor Steven Glaser. Rather than focus on one area of piano music, I augmented my repertoire through extensive study of the Baroque through Modern periods. In addition, I accompanied orchestra and band instruments, a youth choir, and even performed the first movement of Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concerto with my high school’s chamber orchestra.
I am very perceptive of my students’ rate of improvement and level of engagement with the music they’re playing. If they are stuck on something, I take the time to break the music into manageable steps and to find appropriate supplemental material. Welcome to my studio, where I will instruct you in your musical and academic endeavors. What sets me apart is that I offer diverse instruction in two different areas. In my music studio, I give lessons in piano, violin, guitar, and composition. In my tutoring center, I specialize in Latin (learning from scratch and tutoring). I performed different self-composed pieces at seven OSU Composers' Workshops and won the Audience Favorite Award at the Johnstone Woodwinds Composition Competition in 2012. My Senior Composition Recital was performed on October 25, 2012. It showcased several of my three-movement works: string quartet, clarinet solo, set of classical songs for piano and voice, set of pop songs for piano and voice. Interspersed with these were two solo piano pieces and a duet for piano and violin.
My background makes me a knowledgeable and effective tutor. I was valedictorian at Delaware Hayes High School in 2009 and received OSU's Maximus Scholarship based on my ACT and SAT scores.

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:
One of the wonderful (and obvious) benefits of private instruction is that each student's unique abilities and shortcomings can be brought into clear focus and addressed. I am highly skilled at encouraging students through a careful balance of praise and constructive criticism. I make sure they are aware of (and take pride in) their strengths so that when challenging moments arise, they are motivated to do the work.
I maintain high expectations for my students, constantly reminding them that it's the quality (not the quantity) of their playing that counts. It is much more important to me that a student learns to play one piece well rather than ten pieces poorly. There is no race to the finish line. I believe in taking however much time is necessary to help a child understand a concept—we might spend the majority of a lesson on it if we have to. Learning must be done at the child's own speed. Children benefit enormously from having 100% of my attention during lessons; they will never need to try and "catch up" with other students.
Most method books for young students focus on teaching the child to read notes on a page, and as one can only learn to read music so fast, children are therefore stuck playing songs that keep the hands rooted on or around Middle C. There are so many problems with this method, least of all the fact that it's quite boring. A bigger issue is the lack of focus on technique and playing. Children are naturally musical--they love to sing and dance. Playing piano should be no different. Children can be taught songs using no music at all; rather, they can learn simple melodies by identifying patterns on the piano. This helps train their ear AND frees the child up to focus on technique rather than scrutinizing the notes on the page. My students get to use the entire keyboard almost right away (both black keys and white keys) rather than being crowded around Middle C.
Another issue with the Middle C position is that it creates an awkward twisting inward of the wrists, which breeds tension. The first thing students should learn is how to play with relaxed wrists, not tense ones!! This is one of the building blocks of good piano technique. Keeping kids rooted around Middle C for the first six months of their piano education does not set them up for good technique.
Now, all of this is not to say that I don't teach children to read music--I do. Absolutely! I introduce intervals and guide notes as soon as possible. I think the intervallic approach is super useful, especially when dealing with children who are coached from a young age to look for patterns. Alongside reading music, though, it is important to teach songs that are only for playing.
For beginning students, I like to use the Piano Safari method. These books offer a wonderful blend of rote pieces (for playing, not reading) and reading pieces that use the intervallic approach. These pieces are fun and engaging--some parents complain about how their children won't stop practicing them! Here is a sampling book of other books and materials I may use:
