With over 10 years of teaching experience, I am able to prepare students for polished, accurate, playing with an emotional connection. Beginners will learn to read music using method books that are supplemented with authentic classical pieces (as opposed to beginners' versions of popular pieces). Intermediate students will learn classical pieces from all musical eras. We will cover all major and minor scales, arpeggios, sight reading, and aural skills.

About Cindy
Regardless of where your musical interests lie, I can help you improve your skills! Growing up, I fell in love with playing and singing all styles of music! I've delved into classical, jazz, R&B, soul, gospel, reggae, soca, pop and musical theater, and I can teach you how to apply proper technique to the genre(s) of your choice!

If you're looking to become a better singer, we will focus on finding the beauty and power in your voice in a healthy manner. Vocal health is an important component of everything I teach, and I work to eliminate strain and vocal fatigue. We will work on balancing your vocal registers to give you control over the troublesome middle range. With a healthy foundation in place, we will fine tune your skills by addressing pitch accuracy, vocal control, phrasing, dynamics, expression and microphone technique.

If y
ou're interested in playing piano, you will learn how to read music and/or play by ear. You'll learn scales, chords, arpeggios, sight-reading, and basic music theory. For singers who are interested in piano, I've developed a great technique to teach you how to accompany yourself.

For songwriters, I can help you write stronger lyrics and set them to music appropriately.

In general, I'm pretty upbeat and fun. However, I expect you to practice. When you practice, you hear and feel the difference and everyone's happy! If you don't practice, you'll remain in the same place, and it's frustrating for everyone. :( Please, please, please practice! :)

My degree in music education and wide range of experience allows me to accommodate different learning styles. I have a knack for breaking down seemingly difficult or mysterious concepts in a way that's easy to understand. I also understand the demands of being a full time musician, and can offer advice to students who are interested in going that route.

I would love to help you enhance your enjoyment of music by making it fun and easy for you to learn!

From the moment we walked in Cindy made my shy daughter immediately feel at ease. Her approach and ability to connect with students at any age (I overheard her lessons with an older woman), makes her a gem. She provided helpful tips to help improve while practicing. With each lesson, my daughter walked away feeling more confident and clear on what she needed to practice at home. I would definitely recommend her.

Music should never simply be a rote-learning process. We develop real artistry. My students learn how to interpret, transform, and create music. From the first lesson, we experiment with various musical "ingredients" and revisit these tools often as we move through a lesson series or repertoire. Students explore a variety of styles and learn to read, compose, and improvise. Students as young as five have created their own theme and variations on a favorite tune with these techniques. With classical piano, we also emphasize playing pieces from some of the greatest composers in history.

About Lauren
Hello! My name is Lauren S., and I am excited to bring out the musician in you!

We have all sorts creating and learning—children and adults in their first lessons, teens and preteens performing and competing, working professionals looking for a creative love, and retirees coming back to an instrument from many years before. We have parents & children, siblings, and friends who learn and love to make music together!

Whether you're searching for yourself or your child, I would love to invite you to Musical Life—my beautiful in-home studio—and help you meet your musical goals.

We focus on developing true artistry and giving them the fundamental tools to be able to play and create various styles of music including classical, musical theater, folk, contemporary, Christian, and more.

We play from the very first lesson and learn o
ther concepts such as music theory, literacy, and technique in subsequent lessons.

My students are involved in school & community ensembles, school & community theater, and district contests. I support and seek out these opportunities according to their interests.

Please send me a note! I can't wait to get started.

I have been playing the piano since I was five years old. My passion for music led me to steadily progress in my studies, and I naturally chose to major in music at Ohio State. To broaden my scope, I earned my degree in Composition while taking piano lessons concurrently from Professor Emeritus George Haddad and Professor Steven Glaser. Rather than focus on one area of piano music, I augmented my repertoire through extensive study of the Baroque through Modern periods. In addition, I accompanied orchestra and band instruments, a youth choir, and even performed the first movement of Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concerto with my high school’s chamber orchestra.

I am very perceptive of my students’ rate of improvement and level of engagement with the music they’re playing. If they are stuck on something, I am patient to go over the lesson as much as needed. If they feel bored, I will find more challenging music for them. A great incentive to play is that I offer lessons on my ...

Education

BM Music Composition -- Ohio State University, Autumn 2012
BA Classics (Greek and Latin) -- Ohio State University, Autumn 2012
Classics Fellowship -- Indiana University, 2013-2014
Piano Training: Collegiate lessons from Steven Glaser and private lessons from George Haddad

Accomplishments

As a high school senior, under the tutelage of OSU Profess
or Emeritus and world-renowned pianist George Haddad, I performed the first movement of Shostakovich's Second Piano Concerto with the chamber orchestra.

I performed different self-composed pieces at seven OSU Composers' Workshops and won the Audience Favorite Award at the Johnstone Woodwinds Composition Competition in 2012. My Senior Composition Recital was performed on October 25, 2012. It showcased several of my three-movement works: string quartet, clarinet solo, set of classical songs for piano and voice, set of pop songs for piano and voice. Interspersed with these were two solo piano pieces and a duet for piano and violin.

My background makes me a knowledgeable and effective tutor. I was valedictorian at Delaware Hayes High School in 2009 and received OSU's Maximus Scholarship based on my ACT and SAT scores.

About Kristen
I am a classically trained vocalist and pianist.
I graduated from the University of South Dakota with Masters in Vocal Performance. I also have a Master of Arts in Church Music from Trinity Lutheran Seminary at Capital University.

When I started voice lessons in high school I started at the very bottom. I am a better teacher for having to start at the very beginning.

Every voice has a unique timbre; I teach students to release built up tension and apply foundational techniques in order to unlock their own individual sound. I can help any student to sing with freedom, confidence, and expression.

Whether you want to learn today's popular music, go back to classic songs of the past, or want to write your own music, I have the tools for you! I have many years of experience teaching both kids and adults, and my versatile professional experience means I can offer instruction in a wide range of musical styles. For traditional method book learning, I'm well-versed in both the Alfred piano method, as well as Faber & Faber, while drawing from my own upbringing as a Suzuki student. I also make sure each student learns music theory and ear training techniques in order to internalize the music on a deeper level.

About Tyler
I'm a multi-instrumentalist, teacher, composer, arranger, freshly transplanted to Brooklyn after seven great years in Boston, Massachusetts. My professional experience on saxophone, keyboards, clarinet, flute, and bass in many different musical styles has offered me a wide-ranging palate to teach from. For the past five years, I've worked for multiple organizations and agencies as a private lessons instructor, averaging 15-20 students at any given time and maxing out at over 30! My approach to lessons is laid back, yet goal-oriented. My main goals are to equip my students musical and instrumental fundamentals, help them discover their particular passions within music and work towards related goals, and to foster an environment rooted in fun and mutual respect.

Tyler was the piano teacher for our two daughters for almost 5 years. They were piano beginners aged 4 and 6 when we started. My daughters are more on the shy side, and Tyler ended up being the perfect teacher for them. He is gentle and patient but at the same time got them excited about learning the instrument and playing music of different genres. My daughters enjoyed the lessons very much and they were sad to see Tyler leave for New York. I can highly recommend Tyler as a teacher especially for shy beginners like my daughters were.

In my 25 years as a pianist and 7 years of professional teaching experience since receiving my Master of Music degree, I have never encountered one musician quite like any other. As your piano teacher, I will help you to cultivate a positive relationship with the instrument, develop strong musical foundations, all while bringing out your unique musical passions and strengths along the way. Learning to play piano well is no small undertaking, and will inevitably involve both highs and lows. I am here to help you create the conditions in your practice to increase the frequency of highs, and to coach you on getting through any lows without giving up. With routine and persistence, nothing can stop you from succeeding to achieve this goal!

About Jonathan
I've been playing the piano for 25 years. I started out at age 9, self-teaching myself through improvising and composing for 4 years before I took my first piano lesson. When I was 14, I heard a full recording of Beethoven's 5th and 6th Symphonies and fell head over heels in love with classical music. I went to college for music and received Bachelor of Music degrees in Piano and Composition, then went on to receive a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan, one of the top music schools in the country.

As a pianist, I have been featured as a guest artist at the University of Michigan, Washington and Lee University, Sweet Briar College, Garth Newel Music Center, and was presented on the Distinguished Alumni Recital Series at Western Michigan University. I have performed concertos under the batons of Eli
m Chan, Michael Haithcock, Shane Lynch, and Mark Taylor. As a composer, I have been commissioned to write works for the New Jersey Music Teachers Association, the Garth Newel Quartet, and Latitude 49. Most recently, I adopted the alias Jonathan Aidan to produce solar powered electronic music for yoga. Salute the Sun, the debut album for this project, was released on Earth Day 2018.

Over the last 7 years of teaching professionally, I have fallen in love with teaching and enjoy working with students of all ages and levels. I encourage my students to balance their practice time between fundamentals (i.e. scales, graded method books, theory), and passion projects (i.e. what do you REALLY want to play?). I also like to teach applied improvisation, in which you use the music theory you are learning to create your own original music. With this approach, you will establish strong and flexible foundations on which you can learn to master the music you are most passionate about.

Students should expect to budget routine practice time between lessons into their schedule. We will work together to devise a practice plan that will work for you. I will hold you accountable to the practice and achievement goals each week so that you can make the most out of the time and money your are investing in music lessons.

I look forward to meeting you and helping you to achieve your musical goals!

As a versatile musician who works as an high-level accompanist and classical pianist, Daniel uses the skills of composition, improvisation, sheet-music reading, collaboration, repertoire performance and music-theory application daily. It is these skills which Daniel bestows upon his students through his unique methodology. While each c
lass is personalized to the skillset and interests of the student, with the primary goal of inspiring them to learn and love music, Daniel's classes are a rigorous and exciting time for student, teacher and parent alike.

Daniel is currently employed as a pianist at the Juilliard School, LaGuardia High School For The Performing Arts, with The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Company, The Martha Graham School Of Contemporary Dance, The Manhattan Youth Ballet and many more. He has taught a growing studio of piano students over his time in New York, as well as teaching for 'Music To Your Home', a major musical education company. He has taught theory, structure and the relationships between music and dance as a Guest Professor at The National University of Costa Rica, as well as in improvisation classes at The Ballet Hispanico School (NYC).
Daniel received extensive training and his Bachelor's Degree in Classical Piano Performance from The University Of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and at El Instituto Superior De Artes, Costa Rica. He has also been trained as an elite Dance Accompanist for over a decade under the mentorship of the best accompanists in New York City. His work as an accompanist has brought him to Barcelona (Spain), Athens (Greece), San Jose (Costa Rica), Chicago (Illinois), and put him in the employment of nearly every major school and dance company in New York City.

Daniel would love to bring his skills, experience and love of music to you and your family.

A hour lesson with Daniel might go something like this!

Technical Work: [10 minutes]

- Scales, posture and technique, and 'Dozen A Day, Daily Piano Lesson Exercises' as well as other method's of technical development created by Daniel to work on dynamic shading, arpeggios, and tone often function to start the lesson, engaging the student's focus and challenging their memory to 'bring up' what was achieved in the previous lesson.

Repertoire: [15 minutes]

-Pieces are chosen from the 'Bastien Piano Teaching Method' which are supplemented by Daniel's personal collection of pieces and based on the students skill level and interest.
In this section we interact with the full capacity of the student to read music, master rhythm and technical difficulties, add increasingly subtle detail, achieve consistency and focus and all with the intention of eventually performing the work. Along the way we instill the knowledge and skills necessary to perform before an audience, often creating mock-performance environments.

Additional repertoire: [15 minutes]

- Students often learn and play Duet Repertoire with Daniel, engaging in the experience of Chamber musician creation and learning the importance of collaboration and listening.
- Students interested in pop and jazz begin work on aural skills or 'Ear Training', learning pieces by way of listening to them and then creating piano arrangements from the transcriptions they craft with Daniel's help. These arrangements become pieces in the student's repertoire.

Music Theory: [10 minutes]

- Theory: Students are taught early on to read 'key signatures' and 'time signatures' in tandem with the development of their scale work and their repertoire. Students learn the significance of the ordering of the scales, the intervals (distance between notes) which define them and multiple ways to deconstruct and define a scale and its parts, thereby allowing students to continue learning on their own, as well as developing the terminology to communicate with other musicians.
Theory gradually increases in complexity based on the student’s interest and skill level, to encompass every facet of chord making, harmony relationships and Roman Numeral Analysis.

- Vocab Word: Students receive a 'Vocab Word' every lesson. This word is a musical term, which will help the student to accurately communicate with Daniel and other musicians as well as more deeply understand the musical language.
- Flash Cards: Students also receive and develop a 'flash-card library'. This is a note-learning game which students play in each lesson with the goal of 'beating last weeks time' using increasing skills in sheet-music reading. As the student learns more notes and achieves faster times, the 'flash card library' grows and the challenge increases.

Improvisation: [5 minutes]

- Every lesson Daniel and the student improvise at least one piece of music. The student is guided over a period of weeks to internalize the concept of improvisation, eventually freeing them to the infinite and inspiring possibilities inherent in the practice of 'Improv'. Improvisations use and thereby reinforce the scales learned at the beginning of each lesson and demonstrate the importance of listening, collaboration, imagination and harmony.

The Color Game: [5 minutes]

- This is a game played at the end of each lesson in which Daniel and the student take turns striking a 'triad' (a chord with three notes). With eyes closed, the two participants begin to 'listen closely' to the chord as it is then restruck and eventually attempt to 'hear a color'. Students may also 'hear' shapes, textures, and scenes, which Daniel and the student then share with each other to great fascination and amusement, revealing similarities of interpretation and most importantly, opening the students mind to a new and magical understanding of sound.
This game, related to the psychological phenomenon of synesthesia, engages the students imagination, self-confidence and concludes each lesson is a fun, inspiring and exciting way.

Piano Notebook:

- All of Daniel's students keep a 'piano notebook', in which they receive a practice plan at the close of each lesson. The practice plan outlines the goals and methods of practice for the coming week, as well as containing advice from and a synopsis of that day's lesson. The notebook further serves as a workbook and a reference used throughout the learning process.

Sincerely,
Daniel Hyde
