I have been a voice, acting, and teacher of creative arts for over 25 years. *** Lesson Details ***
Voice
I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the students individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal exercise come next, then when the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that the student be part of the process of picking material since the more they personally respond to the material the more apt they are to be engaged in their lessons and the more quickly they will learn. After three to six months they will understand the fundamentals of breathing and relaxation and its importance to proper vocal training. They will have begun the process of extending their range and will understand the principles of performance in song.
Acting
As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on.
Creative and Lyric Writing
I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the must compelling.

I graduated from Boston College with a B.A. in Music and Communication in 2013. Then I earned M.S. in educational studies: ESOL at Johns Hopkins while working full time as a public school teacher in Baltimore. At Highlandtown Elementary Middle School, I was the Strings Program Director with Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's OrchKids. Hello! Hola! Benvenuto! My name is Christopher S. and I am a classical guitarist, composer, polyglot, and experienced language and music teacher.

I am a recent graduate with a Masters of Music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA. There I studied with the world-renowned guitarist Eliot Fisk who is a direct student of the legendary guitarist Andres Segovia.

After I graduated from my undergraduate degree, I realized that in order to better my skills as a musician and become the guitar teacher I wanted to be I had to travel abroad. I moved to Seville, Spain where for three years I studied the art of classical and flamenco guitar.

I studied with a international known Spanish guitarist named Francisco Bernier at the Conservatory in Seville. From traveling and spending so much time in Europe, I also developed and studied my love of languages and I became fluent in Spanish and Italian.

My teaching history started after I earned Bachelor Degree in English language. First, I just had a few private students in order to get some extra cash (student life ;)). Then I realized how much happiness it brings to my life and I started working with 3 different private schools. et, it is imperative to understand students' backgrounds, aspirations for the future, and proficiency levels. Additionally, I believe that setting tangible goals drives improvement and increases motivation. Finally, feedback, feedback, feedback! Intonation or vocabulary usage, personalized and specific feedback is what my students get and love.

As far as methodology goes, I am pretty eclectic. Again, methods and approaches are chosen based on students' needs. Sometimes we just have to work on drilling sounds and intonation or some simple grammar concepts like “do/does”, while at other times open conversation is the best way to practice the same content. One key component that doesn’t change is the focus on the student. I work hard on planning my lessons so that my students do most of the work during class. I also strive to contextualize everything around real life by choosing materials that are recent and relevant.
