Jocelyn H.

Chicago, IL

I have been acting and performing for over 10 years and have studied several different styles of acting techniques. We can work on monologues, scenes or prepare for upcoming performances and auditions.

About Jocelyn

I am currently a professional singer as well as a music teacher here in the Chicago area. While I am in Chicago the majority of the time working and performing, I do travel throughout the US and Europe for performances, which recently have included New York, Hawaii, Indiana, Toronto and Salzburg, Austria. I have studied singing privately for over 13 years in styles ranging from classical and opera, to pop, musical theater and jazz. I have also taken advanced classes on vocal pedagogy and the method behind teaching singing properly and healthily. In addition to singing, I have also studied seve
ral languages (Italian, German, French, Spanish), diction, acting/performance, music history, music theory and marketing, which all come together to create the entire package necessary when teaching and performing as a singer. I have also studied piano extensively, having played for over 20 years, and began teaching piano lessons over 10 years ago. I play the piano during the singing lessons that I teach, which is important for warm ups, learning notes and especially the opportunity to sing with live accompaniment.

*** Lesson Details ***
For me, the most important part of any music lesson is you, the student, and helping you grow and learn based one your unique interest in music.

Whether you already love singing or playing, or just want to try something new, I will make sure to find a balance of pieces that will help you grow technically as a musician, and the styles that you really enjoy or that drew you to music in the first place. Because of this, the actual curriculum of the lessons I teach will vary greatly depending on your level and what genre of singing or piano you are interested in learning.

I do expect my students to work on their assigned music over the week and to come prepared to all of their lessons because it takes a sense of curiosity and commitment towards music and practicing if you want to improve. However, if you encounter problems with a certain part of a piece that you can't get past, or something big comes up during the week, all you have to do is let me know and come with questions that we can work through together during your lesson.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Full weighted Keyboard, in the studio room with seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect students to have a piano or full keyboard if I am going to travel to their house.

Abigail loves her lessons; I suggested to her that she let you know she has a personal cordless microphone & amplifier. I thought the usage of microphone would be cool to use. Of course, this was only a suggestion, what do you think?

Wendy P.

Chicago, IL

Acting students will receive instruction customized for their individual needs and skill level, drawing on a variety of techniques, including Linklater (physical and vocal work), Stanislavski, Meisner, and Grotowski, Shurtleff, among others. Students can work privately on audition skills, including monologues and cold reading, as well as scene work, character building and basic principles of acting. The first step to great acting is a free body and voice, allowing full expression of of emotional life of the character!

About Wendy

I am a professional singer, songwriter and actor working in the Chicago area for many years. I have a B.F.A. in Theater/Voice from The University of Kansas and an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College Chicago. I've been teaching private vocal instruction since 2003: I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, a unique and supportive venue for singer's to become more comfortable performing before an audience. I also instruct workshops for vocal technique and performance. For the past 10 years I was the lead singer for The Red Apples, an acoustic roots band that performs an eclectic mix
of rock, swing, blues, country and jazz. I also have a cabaret/art song project consisting or original material with composer Jaroslaw Golembiowski. As a singer and actress I have performed with many major theaters in the Chicago area, including Court Theater, Victory Gardens, National Jewish Theater, Bailiwick Theater, and Prop Theater.

*** Lesson Details ***
As a classically trained singer I will instruct you in all aspects of singing technique, from breath control and support to improving your tone, range, flexibility and resonance. My familiarity with a variety of musical styles from pop/rock, R&B, and country, to musical theater, lounge and jazz makes me an ideal teacher for those interested in contemporary styles.

I have spent many years developing my own style of singing and instruction. I draw on my experiences and training not only in music, but theater and movement, (Linklater, Alexander Technique, Grotowski) to create a well rounded approach to singing and performing. As an instructor, I am most interested in helping students find their true voice and artistic style. I teach students to find expression through and with a foundation of technique, rather then in spite of it. I also am very interested in helping students deal with the mental/emotional aspects of performance, an all important area so frequently ignored by music teachers. My style is nurturing, yet disciplined, and sprinkled liberally with good-natured humor."

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio space is fully equipped with a piano, P.A. system with microphones, CD, MP3 player for tracks, and ability to record lessons if the student desires.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Please have a piano (in tune!) or keyboard for use in your in home lessons.

*** Specialties ***
I am classically trained, but I am very adept at teaching music in a wide variety of styles, including most contemporary styles of music including pop/rock, roots, swing, jazz and blues, country, r&b, and of course musical theater and cabaret. My band performs an eclectic mix of originals and covers in the roots rock genre, and I write music as well. I have many years of experience in the theater as an actress, and I coach acting technique and performance. I coach singer/songwriters, and all types of singers, of all ages. I have a workshop that specializes in helping people learn to perform better in front of an audience, and I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, which is a supportive opportunity to perform regularly! I also coach bands, to improve their vocals, harmonies, etc.

Wendy has been giving voice lessons to my 12-year-old daughter for 6 months, so I asked her what kind of review she should get. The answer was quick: "Five stars!" Why? "Because she's fun, and she has helped me identify and work on the skills I need, and helped me improve where I'm okay, but could be better."

From my point of view, Wendy has done all those things. My daughter loves to sing, and Wendy is increasing her skills and her confidence. She looks forward to her weekly lessons; never a complaint. Five stars.

Beth F.

River Forest, IL

I've been teaching acting for 20+ years and my students have gone on to perform on both amateur and professional theatre. Within a few lessons, you'll be able to improve your performance, and over time you'll be able to build on my technique. I specialize in public speaking & theater, typically using scripts or speeches my students bring, but I have a library if needed. Lessons typically do not require any additional equipment. I love working with students of all ages & experience levels.

About Beth

Beth F. is available for in-home, in-studio, and online lessons worldwide so you can access more than 25 years experience to improve your audition, public speaking and acting in any context. Her background includes professional stage acting, movement and training in Los Angeles, and directing plays in Chicago and Los Angeles and working directly with Paul Sills in improvisational theater. She also directs musicals/plays with ages 10-21.

Her focus is on making sure audition pieces are appropriate, showing the range of the actor within the requirements. Beth coaches the entire presentation fr
om entering the room to exiting the room, carefully and thoughtfully planning together with the student.

Her love of acting translates into engaging, fun and challenging lessons that cause the student to feel confident in their abilities and be fully prepared for their performance, whether an audition, a class, a bar mitzvah, a play or any other public or private event.

Beth has directed the Broadway Shows at our local middle school, where I teach music, for the past two years. She has superb rapport and teaching skills. She goes the extra mile, coming in to school at all hours to work with kids who need extra help. She always has practical ideas and acting exercizes that bring out the very best in our students. She has a gift for blocking and transitions. I can't recommend her highly enough!

Beth is the best! She worked with my son to help him prepare for an audition and coached him to excellence. She was patient and kind, and gave him some clear instructions on how to do his best work. She has insights that one only gains from years of experience, and she teaches those beautifully to her students. We look forward t o working with her again as I really think she can make the difference in any audition or performance.
