My instruction includes:

2. Instruction on the home-schooling curriculum
3. Assisting those with a gap in going back to school/university.

I start with an assessment based on what the student has trouble with or last remembers covering in school, and prepare material going from there.

As a result, my students all have improved grades without any need for cramming before tests, and I encourage a stress-free and easygoing learning environment.

Julia creates her own curriculum which is better than anything my daughters receive in their schools.
I see marked improvements in their grades for this past year, and my eldest is actually skipping fourth grade as a result of lessons. I am astounded as to my girls' progress, and greatly appreciative of our tutor's expertise.
Her patient, methodical approach to teaching is why I see us remaining with her for all of our educational instruction. She has already taught arithmetic to my youngest (3rd grade), and algebra to my eldest (starting 5th this sept!), and is proceeding with more advanced math with no issue whatsoever. I cannot recommend her enough.

Geometry is about logic and proving to ourselves that certain relationships between points, lines, angles, and polygons are true. These are foundational concepts that are critical to grasp if you would like to pursue higher mathematics. Students who struggle with geometry do so typically because it is a shock to be thrust into a course taught with such rigid and formalized logic. I make it my goal as a geometry tutor to break down this intimidating facade and show students how to approach and absorb geometrical concepts using simple and commonplace examples of every day experiences.

Hello there! My name is Colin, and I have four years of experience tutoring math and science. I began tutoring on college campuses, but have most recently been tutoring students – ages 12 through 50+ – from all over the country through online video chat. I am a UC Berkeley biomedical engineering graduate, and as such, both math and science are a significant part of my daily life. In college, I excelled in mathematics up through differential equations, as well as in science classes such as physics, general and organic chemistry, general and molecular biology, and programming. In addition to my coursework, I was an undergraduate researcher in a bioengineering laboratory for three years. There, I used a cutting-edge gene-editing technique, known as CRISPR, to correct DNA mutations in mouse models for muscular dystrophy. My work, along with t
hat of my colleagues, culminated in a publication in Nature Biomedical Engineering. My strong background in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) qualifies me to tutor math and science up through lower-division college courses. However, I believe that it is my genuine passion for STEM that makes me a good teacher of math and science.

As a tutor, my goal is not to impress students with how much I know. Rather, my goal is to impress my students by showing them how easily math and science concepts can come to them when they are presented the material in a straightforward way. The late physicist, Richard Feynman, posited that the ability to explain complicated ideas in a simple manner is the true mark of understanding. I agree with this assertion, and I make it my goal each tutoring session to explain even the most complex phenomena in a simple way, so that my student will come away from the lesson invariably understanding it. Additionally, I emphasize a strong understanding of the fundamentals, because both math and science are heavily inductive disciplines; many of the theorems and laws are founded on other, more fundamental principles. I have personally experienced the discouragement of trying to learn material that is beyond my foundation level, and so I can empathize with students who are in that boat. Fortunately, I have learned that the remedy is always a return to, and a strengthening of the basics. That is the approach I take with students who find themselves struggling in a course.

My online teaching platform is a “black board” drawing program that my students can follow along with as I explain concepts and solve problems. I simply share my screen with them during the session, and at the end, I take a screenshot of the notes and email it to my students for their reference. I hope this brief explanation of my qualifications and teaching style has provided a clear image of what you can expect from me as your tutor. I have tutored dozens of students in the SAT and ACT and have helped them all increase their scores with most increasing their SAT score at least 100 points and some by over 400 points and on the ACT most by over 8 points and some by over 15 points. These are very difficult tests designed to be difficult to improve on. All of my students who gave themselves plenty of time to prepare and followed through on their promise to work on their own have seen significant score improvements.I have also worked with numerous students on developing study skills; helping them find the fun in school as well as helping with their organization skills and approach to homework.

Mary is a wonderful teacher. She is patient and bright and tailors her lessons to fit the needs and desires of the learner. I enjoy our sessions very much and have learned more Spanish working with her than in all of my past attempts to learn languages combined (from years of courses to Rosetta Stone). In ten hours I feel I have a good foundation for understanding the language and can form sentences and engage in conversations on my own. I look forward to continuing with her and learning even more!

Hello, I’m Keenan! I graduated in 2016 from Denison University in Granville, OH, with a BA in Mathematics and a BA in English Literature. I have 5 years of tutoring experience.
Many of the issues I’ve seen tutees run into, especially with mathematics, stems from a lack of confidence. They often believe that they are just not good at math and end of giving up before they try, making this a self-fulfilling prophecy. My tutoring method centers around “learning-by-doing” to gain confidence and teach core concepts at the same time while we build up to more difficult problems. Mathematical thinking takes time and a lot of head-scratching, and while I can not do the work for you, I am there to be a guiding hand that can help talk you through problems and examples and teach you how to study. About Keenan
I am a 2016 graduate of Denison University in Granville, OH. I spent much of high school and all of college tutoring others in Mathematics. I love working with students in a one-on-one setting in order to give my full attention to their success. I aim work with my tutees in a way that I can best discover how they learn, their strengths, and their weaknesses.

The day before a lesson, I like to be sent whatever material or problems that a student is working on so that I may go over it myself in order to make the most of the time in a session. I believe in learning by doing, but in that regard, I also aim to make sure students know not just HOW to solve a problem but WHY that solution works. I have had a lot of tutors for mathematics (it just never clicks for me the way other subjects do!) over the years and Keenan was by far the best one. He managed to immediately figure out where I was intellectually and meet me there without making me feel like I was stupid at all. He was consistently kind, and came up with multiple ways to explain concepts I was having trouble with, and made sure that the answers he gave to my questions made complete sense to me before moving on. Keenan was even able to tame my anxiety the first time we met, and because of him I was able to pass calculus and get into graduate school! He even helped me come up with ways to ask my professor questions during class so that I didn't get left behind in lecture. I used to have a lot of trouble with this, since I was embarrassed and not sure that I would ask a question that made sense. Overall, Keenan was the best tutor I have ever had, and I am so grateful to him for helping me not only understand calculus, but start to enjoy it as well!

SINGING AND MUSIC LESSONS: In addition to providing technical training, I believe that singing is about liberation and expression, and have had successes in helping students to find their unique voices through overcoming vocal anxieties. I both work with students who are preparing for auditions and who play in professional bands, and also with students who have only ev
er sung in the shower and just want to get more comfortable using their own voice for fun. I also specialize in teaching music theory (including how to read music, rhythm practice, and harmony), playing an instrument and singing at the same time, and songwriting coaching. I degree in music from Brown University, have been a professional, performing musician for 12 years, and have been teaching private lessons and classes for 8 years.

For those in bands: I specialize in harmony and can do consultation sessions with you and/or your band to help with blending, finding harmonies that work for your respective vocal ranges and for the flow of the song, and teaching skills for finding and building harmonies.

MATH: As a middle and high school student, I didn't believe I was "good" at math. It wasn't until I was an adult and was hired as a math tutor - and later promoted to Assistant Director - of a tutoring company that I realized that was a belief that had held me back. Many kids and young adults struggle with confidence around math, and having had experience with that myself I use tools that help meet students where they're at and support them in building enthusiasm for math and confidence in themselves. In addition to providing tangible math skills (I have not only been tutoring Algebra, Geometry, SAT prep, elementary and middle school math for 5 years, but have also helped run a math tutoring company in which I built year-long curricula for grades K-12), I help students feel that math is within their grasp and can be approached with curiosity rather than fear and low self-esteem.

It was such a pleasure working with Julie! I'd never taken a singing lesson before and Julie made me feel super comfortable. She encouraged me to keep trying when I felt like I was messing up, gave me tips and tricks that worked for me, and also kept it fun! :)

I’m sure most people realize how hard it is to be so vulnerable in front of another, or worse, a group. And that is how singing was for me. I was scared beyond belief. My introduction to Julie was amazing. I felt 100% at ease and comfortable the second I walked through the door. She just has this incredible positive energy and warmth, that you can't help but feel comfortable to be yourself and ready to be open in front of a stranger. For me, this was the biggest step. Once we started singing (if you can call what I was doing that :) she never made me feel uncomfortable or bad about my voice. Just the opposite, encouraging, reinforced by smiles and laughing together. Her exercises are easily comprehensible and she puts everything on paper or in a recording so it's simple to follow for homework. She also helped me learn harmonies on songs my band was doing and created a bunch of fun exercises/games to learn harmony. If you are looking to take singing to the next level, whether starting out or stepping up your current range, Julie is a wonderful instructor and I would highly recommend her to anyone. One of these days I'll convince her join my band :)
